The first line in The stranger by Albert Camus has stuck with me ever since I read it 7 years ago, ”My mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know.” I can’t think of any other first lines that I’ve read that I remember as clearly as this one!

I read this book in its original language to practice my French a bit and I really do agree! It sets the tone for the book very well, some of the times that our main character was being uncaring about things had me laughing, even though it’s not supposed to be funny, that ain’t a bad thing tho pfft

I always go back to Nevernight’s, “People often sh*t themselves when they die”. It may not be the prettiest or best first line I’ve ever read, but it sure is memorable lol It also sets the tone for the rest of the book and if that first line offends the reader, they can just stop there (before *SPOILER ALERT* anyone casually loses their limbs while training 😳😆hehe)

Enrico Fermi was a very colorful character in history. He was a physicist and his lab had many women in it who picked up expressions from him without knowing what they meant. These nice young ladies were swearing like sailors in Italian. :-) I believe that he was also the one who said that the state of European physics had gotten so bad that "...an experimental physicist couldn't add a column of figures and a theoretical physicist couldn't tie his own shoe laces.
