hey! I went to Jack's based on your review....I loved it. thanks! also, HUGE thanks to you for caring enough to learn how to pronounce the names of the restaurants properly (I've noticed you've done that twice).... The distinction is honourable. Peace!
Born and raised in Seattle I'm an Ivars guy because I was brought up with it going there with my dad and grandpa but Nosh is equally great but also enjoy pacific inn and spuds on occasion
I've watched a lot of fish and chips reviews lately. You did a good job of articulating the pros and cons of the different chippie's. Can't wait to try Jacks.
Awesome! I'm so happy to hear that Jack's was your #1 because I'm 99% sure that's where my husband and I grabbed some fish and chips when we spent the whole day in Pike Place Market. :) Loved the video!
Does anyone remember back during the 1970-1980s, a little Indian fish place next to Ivars on the Pier close to the Aquarium? They cooked Codfish on open Alerwood grills next to the sidewalk. One of their standard orders consisted of 6-inch long fish planks in with a bunch of deep fat fried rough-cut French Fries. They also had really great super creamy Clam Chowder that they dipped out of a big barrel. Wow, I still get goosebumps just thinking about that place.
Super helpful! My hotel is just a few blocks from Pike Place so thank goodness that Jack's is your #1 place. I'll be walking over there tomorrow to give it a try. Wish I had seen your 15 favorite Pike Place foods earlier this week, so now I'll just have to pick a couple of them to try before flying back to SF, CA. Shug's, Ginger Beer and Crumpets are in order.
Female Foodie I think they had an off day. I went 15 minutes prior to the official 11 am store opening, but they were taking orders anyway. They had my fish and chips ready while I ordered so obviously they were frying ahead of time to get ready for the Friday lunch crush. It was ok, not bad but not great. I will try again though because I can tell the flavors are spot on if the fish was made to order. By the way, the s’mores sundae at Shug was sooo good. You were right about! Very glad for that recommendation.
So glad to see you discovered Freshy's on Mercer Island. It has been my favorite ever since I discovered it maybe 8 years ago. I will by trying Jack's at Pike Place Market for sure. Thanks for a great video. I hope you will visit SAN FRANCISCO soon and do a video about the fabulous restaurants there. Also Carmel by the Sea. This is a great video and I look forward to more.
Remember your timing when you eat fish and chips… If it’s near closing or after a busy time. Depending on when they change the cooking oil… It will break down eventually giving you soggy oily fish..😝😝
My wife and I will be visiting Seattle and can’t wait to try Jacks based on your review We live in Houston Texas and this will be our first time in the Pacfic NW.
Nice work! Really dig how detailed you are. A fellow seasoned foodie, traveler, and coming to Seattle for the first time for four days around Thanksgiving. I’ve been perusing some fish ‘n chips and it seems like some legit spots (some Fremont spots) are using rockfish. Good? Worth trying or stick to more traditional like cod? Thanks!
Yes! You might also want to check out Nosh- it's supposed to be very English but unfortunately was closed when we visited! They serve the fish and chips with peas and everything (or so I hear!).
Love with both lemon and vinegar and copious sea salt, cocktail sauce, ketchup, tartar sauce, also FRY SAUCE! A little onion salt is very good. I too like them oily and NOT fishy tasting Beer battered! For a real nice crunchy fish add extra dollops of batter to the fish as its frying Lemon pepper works good too I like to season the fish first to help flavor it up I've had plenty of fish that's just been bland There's places I've had GOOD friends and with F & S you gotta nail the fries too!
Went to Mercer Island to try Freshy's and they're permanently closed :-( looks recent as their sign and all the interior fixtures were still in place. Went on to try Emerald City Fish and Chips. They were just ok, not terrific. I'm from New England and was hoping for a nice traditional batter, tarter and chowder and everything has some odd spice in it. Caribbean or Creole maybe, not sure. I need to go back to Pike Place Market, but Seattle in the summer is a mob scene everywhere. Next time you're around, you MUST try the Fish Monger in Edmonds! It the one of the best I've had here.
Aw bummer! Thanks for letting me know I'll have to update this. Sorry to hear you didn't like Emerald City- they're definitely not the most traditional spot. Worth braving the crowds in Pike Place for Jack's in my opinion! Thanks for the Fish Monger recommendation! :)
I had really good fish and chips a while back at Emmett Watson's in Pike Place Market. And I love Marination Ma Kai. The trip there on the water taxi alone makes it worth it.
No how could you say Spuds is bad my family's been going there for over 40 years! When they get new management I think sometimes they change the recipe but spuds has always been great !
How the Duck did you not go to spuds on Alki or Greenlake? They have 4 location's 2 in Seattle and one in Kirkland and the other in Edmonds. They have been around since 1935 and are some heavy hitters in the fish and chips game. Seems like you just crused Yelp and Google to finds places but I'm surprised you found the Pacfic Inn at the bottom of stoneway. Sad to tell you spuds was only 2 miles away and Ivars on lake Union was only 3/4 miles away.
It seems like Ivars and Spud were left off her list for a reason, rather than overlooked, and I would concur. They may have been good a long time ago, but merely adequate lately.
Spuds in West Seattle has been in same location for at least 50 years. Went there when I was a little kid. Best fresh fish and chips in the area by far. I've returned many times through my life.
BROOKE WE MISS U FAMILY NEW VIDEOS U ON U A GAME IN THIS VIDEO U FACIAL EXPRESSIONS R PRICELESS & U EXPLAINING & DEFENDING AGAINST POSSIBLE HATERS & TROLLS MY WIFEY WAS LIKE SHE THOUGHT U SEEMED LIKE IN COURT CASE LOL OK. GOOD NIGHT. STAY SAFE & HOPE ALL IS WELL. THANK U. ATB
the definition is stretched. fish n chips is wrapped up in yesterdays news, salt n vinegar if preferred, ate off ya knees in a park with a biting wind a' blowing. they taste so much better. i'm away for some now in cold blighty.
There's a food truck that gets around Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and maybe a couple of other states called On The Hook. They only run in the summer, unfortunately. If you can ever catch them, they are THE BEST I have ever eaten...and I've been to England. Oh, and I totally agree with you about Salmon F&C. That's just wrong.
Back around 2000 the best was Emmett Watson’s in the Market. Not sure now. Ivar’s was awesome when I was a kid, last time it was garbage about the time they started showing up in malls.
We do NOT go to Seattle, it is a scary place my husband is a fit 84 year old and I am no spring chicken, BUT we feel very threatened by Seattle as we had to go to downtown Seattle twice in 5 years each time we had to hurry to the car, there were drug deals EVERYWHERE and really scary people.
