For my poor 33-yr old disabled daughter…Amen! She inherited them from me. Mine stopped at menopause! She has a few years to go before that time and needs help to relieve the pain and nausea. Cheese, chocolate, ice cream and most dairy foods soft drinks were my triggers. But once menopause happened, the headaches stopped!!! And I had an early menopause, fortunately. The headaches stopped as soon as menopause happened! I drink nothing but water now, avoiding any caffeine, since learning they may have triggered the migraines, . I can eat cheeses, dairy foods without any issues now. Worth the wait for menopause! Will try ginger in water on my daughter. We are desperate for help.

My migraines are a reaction to Tyrosine buildup - especially in fruit. Over ripe or dried fruit will cause a migraine after 8-10 hours after eating. I can eat other foods that have Tyrosine if they don't have a high sugar content. Ice packs and ibuprofen help a lot. When I have a bad reaction it can last 16 hours or more. Cooking will not alter the Tyrosine. I buy fresh frozen fruit, or I freeze very fresh fruit. That reduces the buildup. It used to confuse me. One day I could eat bananas and another day they caused a migraine. Finally I realized it depended on how fresh it was. I hope this helps someone. It seems like an obscure migraine trigger. A food diary is essential - don't give up

For 2 days didn't eat or drink and it flew by. Zero thirst importantly Decided to eat some fruit, found some kiwi. Had four pieces no skin. After that, super dry mouth, unquenchable thirst, normal migraine cycle. Someone said it could be histamine response. I didn't know sweet ripe fruit could do this. Ungodly thirst. Quite crazy

A couple years ago, my neurologist suggested an elimination diet (I was getting 15+ per month usually around 2-3pm onset with no relief from medications); I had never considered diet before that, but I found a correlation between meats and migraines when I started the food log, which made sense since I usually ate oats/fruit for breakfast but had chicken for lunch, so my reaction was about 2-3 hours after eating any meat. My neurologist also ordered a CGM, so I started my journey in WFPB diet 18 months ago and I haven't had a single migraine since! I stumbled upon this podcast just looking through YT about 6 months ago, so I hope my story will inspire others with migraine. Unfortunately grains were a big part of my problems, and there's lot of research on migraines and glucose or insulin sensitivity issues.

Since I didn't see anyone summarize the video: 1) For at least a month/4 weeks eliminate all animal products. I.e. dairy, meat, eggs 2) If you still have migraines eliminate these dozen foods: dairy, chocolate, citrus, eggs, meat, nuts, tomatoes, onions, corn, apples, and bananas 3) Take all those foods out in addition to being vegan, now bring in foods one at a time. Have 4 or 5 of that food in a day. If that food doesn't trigger a migraine then it's safe. Do this again and again, one food every 2 days in a generous quantity 4) If you get a migraine take that food out and move onto the next one 5) Avoid consuming caffeine every day Personally I Know that nuts and bananas are BIG triggers for me. So is raspberries, deli meat, and food dyes

Dear perimenopause women with migraines. In our case it's almost always estrogen dominance and temporary histamine intollerance as direct culprits. I'm almost 24hrs into migraine and it's also my second day of period which I got on 14th day of the cycle. Since I sometimes have no migraines for a few months and then have them monthly or even more frequently I realised there are a few main triggers that are not food related that initiate domino effect we later pin on foods we ate. These are stress, high cortisol and insomnia. If I get lots of these, I know I'm done regardless of what I eat. It's cliche, I know, but stress is a silent killer indeed. I wish my migraines lasted a day but they're usually 2 sometimes 3 day long. On the second day you don't want to live any more.
@leaniemeintjes
@leaniemeintjes 2 месяца назад
I’ve been suffering from migraines also with my period and I tell you , you don’t want to live anymore after a few days. It is excruciating. BUT there is also evidence to suggest that anaemia is a cause of migraine and women who are anaemic and then get a period are even more prone to trigger a migraine. This is info that I’ve received recently and I got tested as extremely anaemic. In this case you need protein and vegan won’t do. Also an iron supplement. Something so simple.
@Rose_Ou
@Rose_Ou 2 месяца назад
@@leaniemeintjesit turned out I was anemic, too, for the first time in my life, and after 7 months on a vegan diet. I love plant based eating but I had to include some animal foods I had almost zero ferritin, too, which was really scary. As a vegan I ate a variety of foods, each and every day lots of kale (I hate spinach) and other greens, and yet I was extremely depleted. My TSH went from 1.9 to 2.6 in just 7 months (all my life I was around 2 and not more than 2) and my skin started to get very dry especially on my elbows and knees; I was simply losing nutrients even though I ate A LOT and a variety of plant based products (clean, no junk). After a month of eating back SOME animal products (meat twice a week) my iron is back to normal and my TSH is very slowly changing, too. Ferritin is still where it was, i.e. close to zero, but I'm glad my body reacted to meat and my iron is now within normal range. I hope it will help with migraines as I went from 1 then 3 to 6 days with migraine per month and I seriously wanted to die. Oh, I did take B12 religiously I was very disciplined so I don't know what caused such depletion within just 7 months. Thank you for your very important comment!

Mine started in 2020 and couldn't get a tela visit mid to late 2020 causing my migranes to go into chronification. Once that happens it's really hard to go back migraine free. I cut out gluten, bananas, apples, mangoes, peaches, and a whole bunch of other fruits and plants like chamomile that triggered it, and I don't get symptoms unless I'm sleep deprived or exposed to a trigger. But I had to cut my diet way down to almost nothing and reintroduce things one at a time to really figure it all out. It took awhile but it was totally worth it! Turns out the things I'm sensitive to all belong to certain plant families, which makes it easier. I've since found a way to go plant-based while still avoiding all the plants that knock me out. Thank you Dr. Barnard for your useful information and important research. I didn’t have any specific food allergies but a whole food plant based diet cut my migraines down 75%. and has been life changing. My migraines always were associated with nausea and/or vomiting. I am glad you made the distinction with a tension headache. I think anyone with migraines needs to exam their food choices and diet. The brain and gut are connected

Please do not call migraines a headache; there are many symptoms of having a migraine - loss of vision, vomiting, feeling washed out and often it is accompanied by a pounding pain in the head. And when it is not those other symptoms are still very debilitating so to call it a headache is a misnomer.

I used to get cluster headaches from unregulated high blood pressure. I'd wake up with a pain in the back of my neck and sometimes it would go full blown debilitating, or sometimes it would quickly go away. It wasn't until I. . . 1. Went whole food, low fat, salt-free vegan with McDougall method. 2. got my own home blood pressure monitor and regulated my medication (Clonidine) dose daily to normalize my BP. 3. Quit coffee and tea. It's been almost 5 years now since I've had a headache of any kind! I was drinking coffee and tea while a whole-food vegan and still got headaches. @Equinox1.5
@Equinox1.5 3 года назад
@@karennesbitt9655 It could be contributing. If your body is sensitive to caffeine and depends on that one cup a day, it's quite possible that even a small amount will trigger a migraine. It will almost certainly trigger one if you stop drinking that cup cold turkey. If you want to quit, just make it as usual every day but be sure to make the same amount in the same mug at the same strength every day. On the first day, remove one teaspoon of coffee from your mug after you have made it but before you put in milk or whatever. The next day, remove two teaspoons, and so on. You might even need to remain two days on the same 'dose' before you reduce again. (Don't simply add less water each day, as that will make the solution more concentrated. You make it, and only then remove a little.) That way, you should be able to quit it without triggering anything nasty. I'm sure you already know this but black, green (including matcha), white and maté tea also contain forms of caffeine that have the same effect on the body, as do guarana and chocolate, and sodas and foods with added caffeine. Quitting caffeine and dairy products are hands down the best things I ever did to get rid of (or minimise) migraine. If I had to choose one, it would be caffeine. For some people, sugar acts in a similar way. Dark chocolate is also a big migraine trigger for me, as is raw cacao in bar form. The powder doesn't seem to be too bad but I rarely use it - just in the occasional dessert - and would not make a habit of it.

@@Equinox1.5 Thanks. I do enjoy 1 cup of coffee everyday. But I really don't think it is coffee or I would get migraines regularly. They seem to only ocur with a pressure system change. I just wonder what is going on inside me with the pressure change.
@Equinox1.5
@Equinox1.5 3 года назад
@@karennesbitt9655 Barometric pressure is a common migraine trigger (it used to trigger migraine for me - I could tell if it was a heavy day before opening the curtains if my head felt a certain way) but I don't know how it works. This is just me but since I quit caffeine, barometric pressure doesn't bother me anymore and I live in a country where the weather is constantly changing, from one hour to the next sometimes. I still drink coffee but it's a good local decaf filter coffee I found in a deli nearby that is organic and Swiss Water Decaffeinated without chemicals. It tastes just like the real thing. Again, this is just me but in my experience, migraine is like a jigsaw. If certain triggers come together at once, I get an attack. If one is missing, I don't. I think we're all different, though. The pain of migraine - apart from the pain! - is that we each need to work out what triggers it and it seems to be very different for different people. A friend of mine finds her migraine is triggered by light, whereas light doesn't bother me at all unless I am in the throes of an attack. I hope you find a way to ease the barometric attacks. It's a hard one because we can't control the weather. That's why I think 'easing the burden' on the body in other ways (e.g. quitting caffeine and other potentially problematic foods and drinks) might lessen the ability of barometric pressure to trigger an attack.

Try Dr. Barnard 's advice before being swayed by any random commenter such as me! But as a lifelong sufferer, vulnerable to an elusive combination of trigger foods, stress and lifestyle patterns, I finally decided to try a healthy keto diet, and have felt immune to migraine ever since. And there's a good theoretical basis as to why ketones should be protective. Migraine, also known as 'slow epilepsy' is a seizure disorder associated with depressed energy metabolism in the brain, during an attack. Regularizing blood sugar by cutting carbs, and boosting ketones as the alternative fuel source appears to keep the brain functioning much more reliably - even if you skip a meal or have a longer fast. Dr. Barnard has his patients identify and eliminate trigger foods, while also replacing refined foods with a nutrient dense, vegan diet. Excellent advice on every level - and if that eliminates your migraines, stick with it. If not, consider trying a (preferably vegan) keto diet, while informing yourself about the potential risks of increased fat consumption on longterm health.

Too much fat in even a vegan keto diet.... digestive and inflammatory issues for a lot of people. Your trigger was probably sugar.... so as soon as you stopped eating processed foods you got rid of the processed sugars.
@rdnzl401
@rdnzl401 3 года назад
@@annwilliams6438 Yes, your body will tell you if you're overdoing the fat. But as I understand it, not all fats are inflammatory. While omega 6 (found in excess in processed seed oils) promotes inflammation, omega 3 counters it, so it's wise to lean on sources of omega 3 every day. Other fats and oils might be neutral on that score, if I'm not mistaken. Though sugar might have been my migraine trigger, carbohydrates generally kept me wanting to snack, and unable to skip a meal. So, while sacrificing potatoes and wholegrains might not be strictly necessary to avoid migraine, I feel more able to mobilize body fat into energy when I'm not topping up carbs on a regular basis.

If it absolutely cannot be explained otherwise then yes. Exclude excessive light/sunlight, food intolerance and/or gut issues, excessive caffeine intake or caffeine withdrawal symptom. If all of these don't explain it then yes. For me I learned I react to most vegetables due to gut issues once I went plant based. Tricky to find out the exact trigger since the offending food might trigger a migraine up to 72 hours after I ate it! Not sure this is the case for you, but better to keep a diary of what you eat, if cooked /raw, which spices you add, etc. I ain't kidding.... I react to even the smallest amount of spices! Sometimes the smallest stuff might cause the problem and migraine can last 24h at least.
