Over the past few years, I've filmed great white sharks all along the California coast. From as far south as San Diego to as far north as Aptos & everywhere in-between. This is a collection of some of the most memorable encounters I've witnessed so far.

They are less likely to attack than a common dog, or a human on the street, In Australia 🇦🇺 you are more likely to die from a snake bite, spider bite, kangaroo, wombat, magpie, and so many more than a shark, they’re apex predators? Yet attacks are so rare? You see we live on an island and most of the time we go to isolated beaches, it’s dangerous but sometimes it’s more dangerous in your own backyard x you hear about shark attacks because it’s good news, it’s not good for the person, but good for the news outlet! No one wants to hear about a spider bite, or a wombat ripping the entire bottom of your car out, or a kangaroo drowning your kid or killing a family of 5 on holidays… We respect sharks, you should respect them, they generally respect you, 99% of the time anyway, 1% is a risk I’m happy to take ❤ The ocean 🌊 is much healthier and better with them there….

@@ShenStateHuh? I don’t understand your point. If you don’t enjoy the water, sure, stay on land. Not enjoying the ocean because of sharks is silly, though. I’m comfortable in the water and have been lucky enough to snorkel in lots of places and I’d never trade those experiences. Belize has some fun places that let you snorkel with lots of shark species and it’s like being in a bath tub with them. I assume there are places all around the Yucatán peninsula like that. I was in the water in Hawaii somewhere when the boat captain pointed out a larger tiger shark swimming around us, probably looking for turtles or something. To miss out on all the barracuda or spinner dolphin or big skates and rays… or even the Sea Turtles would be really sad because of a fairly irrational fear. But if that stuff isn’t interesting to you, then whatever floats your boat. I’m going fishing in SE Asia after the holidays and look forward to seeing some awesome freshwater fish (catch and release unless my friend is able to prepare what we get).

I grew up surfing in South Africa, being terrified of great whites - given the 21 fatalities at our local beach over the decades. It's only when I started scuba diving and having multiple peaceful encounters with sharks underwater that my opinion of them changed from fear to adoration and respect. @TheMalibuArtist does a fantastic job of not fearmongering with his footage or background music, but instead educating and mesmerizing his audience.
@BlahBlahs1000
@BlahBlahs1000 11 месяцев назад
I'm not sure why it would change your opinion,given the 21 fatalities on your local beach. Sharks are way less dangerous when your on the bottom of a reef, I get that.(former diver) But they are still prehistoric apex sea predators that EAT HUMANS. It only takes a split second for a shark to remind you how unpredictable they can be. And that split second can be your last if you are unlucky. Good thing sharks aren't as mean as barracudas and eels.

Thank you for making this video and saying what you said about sharks being more intelligent than we give them credit and also that exposure to humans at a young age might lessen the number of test bites, BRILLIANT! I think we also need ‘educational’ programs to stop editing footage (not just of sharks but all animals) to suit their storyline and just teach people about real animal behaviors like you have so eloquently done here. I have only learned of you and your work today through a news article, already hooked! From a Bird that LOVES sharks, THANK YOU for your voice and your footage.

Thank you for another beautiful video. ❤️❤️❤ I still love your videos and am so grateful to you for your knowledge and the positive awareness that you bring to us about shark activity. They are beautiful creatures and do not deserve the maligned reputation that they have. It broke my heart that the Tiger shark that killed the Italian man in Egypt this year was so cruelly treated before it died. I do not understand why so many humans cannot accept that the oceans are the domain of sharks (and obviously many other creatures) and we should respect them (and the oceans) and not arrogantly give ourselves rights over them.
@rd4660
@rd4660 11 месяцев назад
Now that human-shark encounters can be documented by drones, it sheds new light on how really rare shark bites are. I suspect that shark-human encounters are not unlike grizzly-human encounters when you get right down to it. Lots of contact, very few deaths. But let's not forget, when we go into the ocean or the wilds on land, we are entering the food chain, for better or worse.

I had a terrifying encounter with an aggressive/agitated shark while out alone on my paddle board. He was tangled in fishing line and charged at me repeatedly. He continued to charge and stalk me off my back shoulder when I started to book it back to shore. Fin and tail up out of the water. He was close enough to be repeatedly splashing water up onto me while circling/charging at me. I’m getting ready to head back to the ocean for the winter and your videos are a help to me. I don’t want to be so afraid and am trying to remember it’s not likely to happen again. Thanks for the videos.

Great shots Carlos!! It's amazing how many sharks are in the water that go totally undetected by surfers and paddleboaters right next to them. I did notice that to their credit, those who did spot them didn't panic and try to flee; they merely observed them. You mentioned a man who had an encounter and continued to surf everyday. I don't think that's unusual as surfers tend to have a real love of surfing and the ocean; wild horses couldn't drive them away. Muchas gracias y saludos de Vancouver.

I would imagine that the reason there are more young sharks in the waves than older sharks is because just as human youth like to have this sort of fun more than adult humans, shark youth probably also think that it's lots of fun. All young animals like to play. And why wouldn't sharks like riding waves, right? They were literally made for it. I would also think that the reason they DON'T do it more often is because of humans... not the reason they do.

Generally sharks don't attack if they "Know" you've seen them - they are surprise attack specialists, which lessens the chance of the prey fighting back and injuring the shark in defence. They are wily, intelligent predators - they have to be to catch seals and sealions who are intelligent, fast and agile....

What a great way to show how many shark - human proximities exist without a bad ending for the human. I'm not saying people don't get attacked because they do, of course. But looking at all the encounters you have provided footage for of the most feared of sharks very near humans, I would say that it is a very slim chance of happening, more so than was previously thought by everyone. Beautiful footage of those sharks taking people OFF their menu! You have a new follower!

Love your videos, but it's channels like these that give people a false sense of security that's contributed to an increase in the number of recent attacks made on humans. These animals SHOULD be feared. There's no such thing as "mistaken ID", and any hungry GW, Bull, Tiger or OWT that's large enough will not hesitate to eat a human.

Great video, however down under in Perth, WA there is not this romanticized feeling, as human life is immeasurably more important. Having a fellow surfer being bit in half by a white pointer makes me hate these killing machines, not respect them. They are a dumb animal that are capable of terrible acts, your tone and relaxed music for your bs propaganda piece is wonky, at best. Videos like this is why idiots approach bears at Yellowstone, fuck crocs and sharks, they are killing machines, nothing more.

Californians - especially surfers seem to have a very positive relationship with the white shark .Its developed over the years. In the 60's when surfing was taking off big in California the GW shark existed in peoples imaginations as a sort of dark mystery, like the wild ocean itself .People feared them, but it was also a badge of courage among surfers, that you go out there with the sharks and ride. It takes a "certain breed"..Now that we know more about these animals, we know they are usually present , and almost never attack humans. and the danger was probably more psychological than actual .The daredevil attitude is being replaced with a more tolerant and wise attitude and the realization that we can live with these animals and we should do everything we can to make that possible.

I found your video very intriguing. In my college biology class I had to do a paper on an article that involved any kind of animal. And I found on about a "shark attack" at the tybee island ga Beach. While I did my research I discover most "attacks" happen due to the shark mistaking a surfer for its favorite meal seal because a human on a surfboard looks like a seal from underneath. And once the shark realizes the surfer isn't a seal mostly from a test bite it leaves it alone. Hence why the word attack is in quotes. To me an attack dictates intent and that's just not normally the case.

They are extremely beautiful, but the thing about sharks is the same as with all wild carnivore animals, meaning that if they are hungry, they will eat other animals if they can, which of course includes humans. That is the whole key thing about it, because that is the law of wild life, eat or be eaten. Even other fish like Groupers with a good size would try to eat people. Hunting preferences are not the same as hunger, if regular prey is not readily available, anything that the animal can hunt and eat, they will do so and this obviously includes humans. That is the evidence on the Australian attacks recently, since the attacks happened during hunting times, and in some hunting areas for the sharks, and some of the attacks, the victims were not dressed similar to the prey, it was clear to the shark that the human was not their typical prey. The humans were in the time and some in the area and the common prey was not, so the sharks attacked, killed and ate the people there. Not cases of "mistaken identity" only cases of hunger, and alternate type of prey availability. Prey tolerance is clear in the wild kingdom, where other animals that can be considered prey may be around Predators and don't get killed or hunted, till the Predator's hunger is activated. Sharks are no different in that sense, and they are ambush Predators mostly, so would implement their tactics when interested in a meal, if the prey is unsuspecting.

Also, not all sharks in California are hungry. The bigger ones in shallows which stay calm and almost still use the gentle crashing of the small waves to help with body pains and injuries…kinda like a bubbling hot tub. A lot of the adults tend to do that more so than juveniles.

Another great video Carlos, amazing. Your videos prove GWSs aren't simply mindless eating machines. I live in the south of Western Australia, it would be so amazing if we had someone like you here documenting via drone footage how GWSs react to surfers here. Surely they're also not as aggressive as we may assume. Many GWSs in your footage are very large - surely large enough to negatively interact with the humans in the footage, but they don't...

I've spent my life in the water. Have to wonder how many times I've been feet or inches away from them.

@themalibuartist Do you happen to know anything about what is known about how sharks react to light, like from a bright beam under water?

It's not just a California thing - it's a Florida thing, too. We coexist with sharks in the water and gators on land. 🧜🏽‍♀💜🦈

More and more data shows, Drivers really dont want anything to do with an accident. That doesnt mean they wont get close No matter what you say or how you word it or what videos you show, im just going to stay away from them. Its just safer and feels better away than close

Is it possible that young sharks can learn that surfers are not food? Any way, love the film and the message

Great Whites sometimes mistake surfers as seals. If they go to far by attacking they will usually bite then let go because they do not like the taste of humans. Unfortunately some bites are to severe ending in the loss of a limb or fatality.

@mikepcartlidge Love your videos and photos Carlos, they have really shown some fascinating insights to GW behaviour. Here in Western Australia we do not use shark nets and drum lines and I'm sure that you would see similar behaviour with your drone here.We to use buoys with sensors that ping when tagged sharks are in the vicinity which then can be communicated thru apps such as dorsal used by water users.

Kayak fishing has caused the sharks to find kayaks and boards more interesting, but the attack rate is still barely existent.

Awesome footage. Both educational and enjoyable! Please create more of this important content. I'm terrified of sharks but it's fascinating to see them next to people without attacking. I grew up in the Jaws era. It played a role in our view of these beautiful, important creatures. Every time I go into the ocean I still hear those two notes the movie used as Jaws would attack...lol. People need to understand the truth about sharks. The shark fin soup industry is an ocean holocaust of epic proportions and I don't understand how or why people do such things. It's horrific. Hopefully that'll end soon if people can become more responsible and intelligent.
