@@ExemplarKyle Bro I had total goofball moments in church. Said the wrong prayers. Stood up when I was supposed to sit. Most of the time they were speaking latin or arabic (parents were into diff religions) so I totally misread things as a kid. Needless to say they stopped taking me. Got to sleep in lol. I could just read the holy books whenever online anyway without anyone trying to pervert it.
Dante's entrance is one of those great "Here is how the protagonist looks to everyone else" moments. That turn to the congregation makes him look like a psychopath
I think the introduction of Nero really highlights some of the mistakes made with DmC and the new Dante Ninja Theory tried making. In DmC, Dante is immediately shown to be someone who doesn't care about the system around him and is aloof towards pretty much everything but what serves him. This is seen in him punching out a bouncer, sleazing it up with two random chicks from a club, and answering the door in the complete nude. Nero is introduced similarly aloof and above the system he's in. During church procession he is not only late, but is fighting monsters while someone he cares about is singing. While in the church, he's blasting music in his headphones, giving the stink eye to other patrons, and even dismissively regarding Kyrie at first. The core difference in what highlights Nero's ability to be a good person deep down is clearly shown in multiple encounters though, including his gift to Kyrie, his immediate defense of others against Dante's assault and the demons outside, and, upon seeing Kyrie's fear, his ability to respond with action to help others in crisis. Although Nero is, fundamentally, a bit of a dick considering the system and world he's in, he still acts like a genuinely good person when it comes down to it and cares about those around him. This not only connects him to humanity despite his heritage, but shows off why he would easily leap into such an adventure. DmC Dante, on the other hand, isn't shown to be a particularly good person in any of the moments at the start. He acts like a scum bag, hurts others, uses others, and basically isolates himself from the world outside of what he can enjoy from it (sex, alcohol, etc). People often pointed out when DmC was being released that fans must dislike the new version of Dante because new is bad, or his hair isn't white, or he's not an over the top anime-esque character. I think Nero's entire intro highlights just why Dante didn't go over well, as it shows you can make a character that doesn't give a shit in what he does, but still make them a decent person that a player can care about.
In fairness, Donte might start an absolute asshole, but he does grow into a decent person. The ending is straight up him choosing to dedicate himself to defending humanity. I don't remember if he has any particularly heroic moments, but I find Tameem Antoniades' & co.'s design philosophy of "DMC sucks lets make DMC" in general to be much more offensive. Donte himself is an alright, if generic and uninspired, hero. I agree he's definitely less likeable and endearing than Nero, though.
Most of my fellow DMC fans I've talked to said their biggest gripe with donte is that he is so far different from some of the original trailers showed of him. But we did agree on one thing if they ever went back to that world/timeline we would like to see the angel aspect explored more.
So very eloquently said, I agree fully. I also really agree with Shuvam Kabir's comment that the attitude behind Donte of "what you like sucks, this is better" contributed heavily to the character's poor reception, it definitely did for me anyway. I love original Dante and when I started 4 I never once felt like introducing Nero was the game's way of saying "screw Dante, this guy's way better!". They gave him his own admirable and likeable traits, relatable traits and flaws, and they showed you out the gate that he can stand toe-to-toe with Dante, not as a way of making Dante look weak but rather making Nero more intriguing by showing how strong Dante is as well, making Nero's initial abilities impressive and getting you curious about what else he can do. DMC 4 used the knowledge of and love for the established characters to strengthen the new character they wanted to introduce. They *showed* you Nero's appeal, while DmC took the approach of basically spitting on what came before and *telling* you "this is better" while just showing you the character being an unlikeable jerk and giving the vibe that they characterized him the way they did for no reason other than to make him as much the opposite of what you liked about OG Dante as possible, rather than to make a legitimately interesting character or story. I don't like the idea of a character being made out of spite for another character, I prefer a character be written to make a certain point in their story. That said, I love the premise of him being part angel and part demon, and I like the idea of him starting off being kind of a dick and growing more into a hero. For that very reason, I really wish they had made him a new character instead of a supposed replacement for Dante, because I think they could have actually done way more with him. To me, aside from anything about stepping on og Dante, putting him in the shoes of a long established character just constrained what he could have been. I would be 100% in favor of them re-introducing him into the DMC franchise as his own character and developing him more.
I love how cutscene Dante in this game treats this entire world-ending ordeal like it's a fucking Tuesday for him. Like, Nero is the ONLY anomaly in this ENTIRE situation.
I swear Kyrie and Nero have SOOOO much sexual tension in this game. Which makes wanting them to just fucking smooch already so painful at the end of the game.
Fun little factoid you guys can throw in for folks who don’t know: the order of the sword members are named after the five parts of the catholic mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus). Maybe people already do but I didn’t learn those terms until I took music history in college.
@@kohalurker I think that's because it's the Latin names? I never really went to Latin Mass because there weren't any offered where I live, so that's probably why I never learned it, either.
@@oracle_8947 late here but it should be in the Missile/Hymnal books that your church provides in your pew. Those names are pretty much every part of the Mass where the whole congregation speaks/chants. Kyrie or Kyrie eleison (“Lord have mercy”) is also part of the Litany of Saints, usually recited on All Saints Day and Easter Vigil.

My headcanon for Dante entering in the most evil way possible is that he saw people misusing his father's image and it just made him freak out and lose rationality.

Just reuse the same levels and bosses backwards *Also Capcom* : No good, we did EVERYTHING and put all the effort we possibly could. Consumers and fans just don't like the franchise anymore. Time to reboot!
Thing is, it DID sell more. However Capcom, for some reason, wanted 4 to reach CoD numbers, they were that delusional. And yeah they completely fucked over the dev team resulting in almost half the game missing, luckily it still ended up being good. Hope they won't fuck up 5 too.

Favorite flex I've seen on this game with Nero is taunting a boss, flash stepping to dodge an attack, repeating that once more, then on the third taunt he takes the weapon mid attack and impales the dude.

In the graphic novel, Fortuna and only Fortuna has fully accepted demons as just part of the town, so they never go out at night. The rest of the world is like the anime. Some people know a bit about them, but they aren't an infestation.
That's what the game makes it come across as, but the novel Deadly Fortune paints a different story. It has Nero once being religious until Kyrie's parents were killed by demons, since he thinks if being faithful was actually able to protect you, they wouldn't have died. It's not just Kyrie's kindness that lets her tolerate Nero's behavior at the performance: she knows he has a big reason to be unhappy with the Order of the Sword.
If you look close enough when Dante is fighting the guards you can see that he is only killing the ones wearing the metal mask and just tossing aside the ones with just the hoods
I love that DMC4 is essentially if you took and condensed an entire story arc of Bleach and turned it into a character action game since you have Nero and Kyriee who play virtually the exact same roles as Ichigo and Orihime and are even voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch and Stephanie Sheh respectively.

Since the first implications of this LP I was like, "will they do it like Nero = Woolie, Dante = Pat" and you do not disappoint. Thanks for never being boring.
I learned to love Shuffle on my latest playthrough because it's basically a parry. Gives you a bunch of invincibility frames and counters, interrupts some attacks that normal hits don't, and the Exceed version is so goddamn sweet. Against certain enemies with very predictable attacks it's absolutely amazing to avoid the hit and then knock them off balance, I love it
And Air-Calibur is great for closing distance. I've been using it in DMD a lot. I've even managed to time it so that I've hit enemies with it after the second explosion from the charge shot lv 3 knocked them into the air and I tell ya, it is by far the best feeling in the whole fucking game. And there are a lot of "did I just fucking do that?" Moments in this game.
So, while I really enjoy DMC4 SE I think DMC3 is the overall better game (Objectively speaking, DMC4 is still my personal favorite game). My biggest issue with DMC4 SE is that while yes, 3 new characters were added. Thats really about it as far as content goes. No new campaigns, and now you have to play 3 new characters through an already incomplete story campaign. Its oversaturated in my honest opinion, and it gets pretty repetitive, especially as Vergil where you're going through both Nero and Dante's campaign.
Back in 2008 oh boy everyone hated Nero in DMC4 just like 2001 everyone hated Raiden in MGS2. Which is funny because I love both these characters and the characters they replaced in those games(Dante and Solid Snake)

Because the on the nose capitalism is bad is nothing new because we've known how bad capitalism can be thanks to 2008 crash that to this day is still hunting america. Also its hurting the youth who can't find full time jobs or get full time benefits. Corporate welfare for rich and no help for the poor and middle class of america.
Shall Never Surrender was my summer's jam this year. Every day, before and after studing, I used DMC4SE to express not only my frustration but also to have a good emotional thrill ride and this song was a part of it. It's so good.
BTW: I love implications of Nero being only 25% demon, like, Full Demons live without Devil Trigger, they just have it eternal, half-demons like Virgil and Dante have to trigger demonic form, humans empowered by demon strenght basically go Resident Evil tentacle hentai (Arkam so whatever was Lady's dad name) until it's taken from them, but basically mutations start on Nero's levels, like, he's 25% demon and his body already can't handle the power all too well, resulting with a jacked up right arm... I wonder how will Nero's kid look like if that'd be consistent.
I thought of something. Trish is like 100% Demon, right? I mean she was created by a demon with no human parts in her at all. So potentially if Nero and Trish have a kid, he would be 62.5% demon and could surpass Dante in Style.

What's great is that I recently went through the HD Collection of DMC, just as they were starting it up, completely coincidental. I'm part way through DMC4 now, all in preparation of getting setup for DMC5. So it's been a blast watching these guys play through DMC.
Dante coming back from Hell is the reason why Eric Sparrow is back in the THUG2 LP, he was released after Lil Woolz literally murdered him after THUG1!
I'm so glad they put on the tutorial. One of my favorite interactions between Nero and Dante is locked behind having the tutorial on in the opening fight.
