Stupid thing 7: The director of this game would say some pretty cringe worthy things in his pre-game interviews, but I think the funniest one was where he talks about how [Lady and Trish] were poorly written big titted prostitutes. And you know what, I think he has a point; the kind but bland, physically abused, co-dependent girl with a massive savior complex for Vergil (who were intimate before he erased her memories, so he could use her as a tool), who later becomes a damsel in distress for Donte to save is far less problematic than a the proactive woman who strove to eliminate the man who sought to unleash hell on earth and killed her mother (her father), or the artificial doll who went against her creator's desires, and now enjoys the freedom she has as a result of helping Dante defeat him. Although I will say that Kat's way of drawing glyphs is really cool. It makes you wonder why it hasn't been done before (at least to my knowledge).

Redux I think the dumbest thing I heard tameem say in interviews was how DMC1 was all about being cool and that it had “great music, fashion, and uhh great music” and the fact he said that it took a bunch of pop culture references to make it what it was. Shows that he didn’t understand the series from the get go.
I think the reason why Kat's sigil stencil hasn't really been done is because it's super practical, but it's really not AS cool as someone drawing the symbol themselves because if you have a character whose a master at magic then it just makes sense that they'll be able to flick their wrist a few times and get it done in like a second. By comparison, Kat's way is how I'd draw one of these things, which kind-of dulls the coolness of it a bit.
I wonder why Donte would ask a random demon guy if he could help him overthrow Bob when the only thing he knew about the old man was that he was one-eyed and was ineffectively swatting at some harpies that were badgering him. Truly, he must have read the script beforehand.

You're all wrong. Sparda only sealed away his power. We've never been told what happened to him, and sometimes he's described as disappearing instead of just dying.
Sparda is legend, nobody knows the details not even Dante. Personally I hope it stays that way though I wouldn't mind a prequel about his insurrection 2000 years ago.
The writing in DmC could not aptly be described with any known words at the time, so the creators had to invent a new adjective, shakespearean, which was then stolen by some hack playwrite hoping to ride the coat-tails of DmC's success by having a similar name.
If you want them to play a boring game where they just shoot the guns to win, why not just ask them to play Black Ops. Zombie mode for 2 hours? You'd get the same affect of boredom as if they did play D.M.C. 2.
The biggest thing I remember about this game was, it came out around the same time Revengence and reviewers I was watching at the time (Reviews on the Run) were saying how this game was way more fun and easier to fight enemies and all that stuff.... Boy what a weird time...
To quote Pat from the Revengeance LP: "If you had told me ten years ago that I'd be more hyped to play a game starring Raiden than I'd be to play a new Devil May Cry game, I'd have told you to fuck yourself."
When a game is easier, has more setpieces and has a presentation that screams "I'm an epic intense serious story", most game reviewers are just gonna suck it up, David Cage is the best example of that, that entire game is screaming "oh man it's so epic and serious right guys" just as much as this does, and since a lot of these game journalists don't really know what a good story actually is, they kinda just accept this stuff, it makes me a little sad.
I agree with Pat's sentiment, at the time, that if you had told him that Rising would make Raiden cooler than Dante and that he'd care more about Sunny than he did Vergil than he'd call you insane. I think he even joked that he'd "beat you to death". So yeah, those people are insane if they liked this game more than Rising.
That was a weird time...Revengeance more than filled that spot for a fantastic character action game. It looked and played solid. I think it is a case of the reviewers confronted with a difficult game saying the easier game is ‘better’.
They should have honestly called this DMC: Anarchy as a spinoff with the main character being called "Damian" or something and it would have been absolutely fine

I'm currently 100%ing all the Devil May Cry Games again. I'm struggling with DmC right now, so i decided to go back to dmc4:se for a mission or two and during the second mission I started crying because it felt so good to play.
I liked the Vergil got his own epilogue campaign and not the "just play the Dante levels as Vergil" thing from the DMC3 special edition. But I'm never forgiving those embarrassingly cheap cutscenes
Journalists were more-or-less reacting to the game the way everyone else would if the original series didn't exist or if Ninja Theory had sanded off the edges and released it as an original IP
@@ProxyDoug The new God of War isn't a story reboot though. I think that series was in a really different position anyway because they had made so many games in the original style that another traditional GoW game would have less zero impact. Assassin's Creed is in that position too where they've released the same basic game in a different setting every year for a decade. Suddenly turning it into an RPG would have been super divisive if they did it in 2013. But now that kind of crazy mix-up is the only way to justify more games in the series. Resident Evil 4 and 7 made huge changes. But they came at a time when people were getting tired of the old system. So that bid to catch new fans and keep just enough old ones could be made. The DMC series wasn't at that point in 2013.

Bayonetta and Shantae don't sell huge numbers, despite how great they are, and the other two games mentioned in this thread are A) established franchises with name recognition doing half the advertising for them, and B) don't have the girl's name first.
This talk about Combichrist is really funny because I'm a pretty decently big fan of Combichrist, but the Combichrist songs in this game are sort of terrible and out of genre with them. They got an aggrotech/industrial metal band, which were genres that were represented in DMC3 and 4 musically, so of course they have them do...Metalcore songs? What? I don't know what Ninja Theory were smoking when they made that choice, or had them direct the music in that way. It sounded like they didn't know what the hell they were doing, because most of the songs don't really sound like Combichrist songs, besides "Empty" and of course the actual licensed songs they use in higher difficulties, in the intro fight, and that are placed in random rotation in Bloody Palace fights. I'm just going to assign it as bad musical direction and poor mixing, because they brought back the lead of this band to compose, write, and perform on some tracks in Hellblade's soundtrack, and he actually did a good job on those.

Ah I love this extremely unique and totally unusual setting for a level, a bleak factory. Luckily the enemies are so unique it makes the bland setting not look bland, right?
@@josh-oo Yeah... Like, think about this. Last mission was a factory level. This mission is a prison level. And both are so uninspired and bland it's nearly impossible to tell them apart. It's just look at set pieces, do platforming, kill boring enemies, rinse and repeat.

really hope they do vergil's downfall also to reitterate despite it not being mentioned here: before or after mission 3: Sparda was once a powerful demon king, who once worked alongside Mundus, his blood brother, as his right-hand man and most trusted lieutenant during the former's rise to power over 9,000 years prior to Vergil and Dante's birth.
The final fight, doesn't understand how to make a good final boss. A final boss is something that should be at least hinted or built up too in the story and the final bosses actions. The final fight with Vergil is not built up well the way Mundus was. Munuds was described as a man in control of the entire world and someone that who was invicible with the Hell Gate and so strong that only a Nephilim could defeat and you see him wrecking the entire city. WIth Vergil we get nothing close to that, he has a few arguments with Dante, but the whole conversation about humanity seems just thrown in since they never talk about opinions about humanity before hand. Having it hinted would have been a good idea and the fact these are two brothers who have clashing ideals about it is similar to 3, but the entire idea falls apart when not only have we not seen Vergil fight but these two barely know each other. Vergil and Dante have spent their better and worst years apart so they're practically strangers, but the game tries to paint it as heart wrenching battle though its between two strangers. When then have his abilities to which most of the game is nonexistent, he's able to teleport, summon swords, create portals and even close the hell gate(which is stolen fromDMC4) and the entire boss fight is a redo of 3's final boss fight aside from his Devil Trigger. ALso I'd like to point out that Vergil was unable to do anything without Dante's help, now you can argue that he needed to keep his identity secret, but I'd like to say this; number one Mundus went to their house and saw pictures of them so he should know Sparda has a second son, number 2 Dante was able to survive for so long while Mundus knowing who he is, number 3 if he never knew that Vegil was a nephilim or even had been a son of sparda then MUndus would more than likely blame the attacks on Dante. Even if you take away all those reasons, Vergil has a mask that he can wear to hid his identity, he wears it I believe once and never again. Vergil serves more as a secret boss fight as an homage to the original series, not as a plot twist battle that meant nothing
The game should have done a better job of developing this through the story. But it is still a theme through the story that Vergil is selfish and conceited, and that Dante is the humanistic one who more genuinely cares about the rebellion beneath his cynical exterior. Vergil ruthlessly kills Mundus' kid, he's pretty willing to sacrifice Kat, and coldly puts killing Mundus over everything. Dante and Vergil have a couple arguments about his methods before the end. So it isn't incredible that the end up in an Xavier/Magneto situation at the end, even if you haven't played the old games. At the end of the game, it is pretty obvious that Mundus didn't know both of Sparda's kids were alive.Dante had been in the open fighting demon even before meeting Kat/Vergil, while Vergil had stayed secret. Vergil didn't not fight (he didn't hesitate to fight Dante) he waited for the right moment.
@@TheJadedJames the last boss fight paints it as him being stronger than Dante from the start since he already had his devil trigger, knowing how to use the Yamato's abilities, it doesn't make sense for him to need Dante's help to take out linchpins for Mundus when he could have done so himself.. Also Mundus should have know about Vergil regardless of anything else, he didn't think he hadn't survived only that Dante existed for some weird reason and I don't care what excuse the game has. The thing about Vergil was that it seemed to try and paint it as a leader making hard decisions and being an opportunist, the first time he and Dante actually argue is in the sever room which is filled with sensitive information about their organization that had to be deleted and Dante pretty much says ''so what'' not understanding the situation, and despite what he tried to do sacrificing kat killing Mundus was the end goal otherwise the war wouldn't end, if Kat hadn't been floating around in spirit realm while captured getting intel the story for the game wouldn't have ended, well it would have but they would have written something else.
@@GiornoGiovana Even if you want to ignore the explanation that Mundus didn't know Vergil was alive. Dante is still the one the demons had an active beat on since before the events of the game. Vergil would still want to recruit Dante and have him be the one catching heat until the end. As the leader of the rebellion, you'd still want an expendable second Nephilim, and the ability to surprise double team the bad guys at the end, rather than them being ready to fight both brothers. Let Dante get all the agro. Vergil could have probably taken down Bob Barbas and the Virility alone. But could he have fought Mundus alone? I'm not saying this story is literary genius. But I get why Vergil did it this way.
Came out in the time after Bayonetta, at the same time as Revengeance, and 1 year before Bayonetta 2. If that’s not the universe saying “This game has no chance.” than I don’t know what is.

The idea that Hellblade wasn't called Hellblade from the start sounds like bullshit. When it was first announced it was only called Hellblade. I'm willing to bet they added the next bit to get people to stop laughing at the name baby Matt would have given it.

I kinda liked the Devil May Cry anime. It wasn't the studio Madhouse over the top action we wanted but I enjoyed seeing Dante's day to day. It also had a fun episode where Lady met Trish for the first time. Here's hoping the new anime will be even better though.
FullMetal Bat even the original hellsing was slow but well paced I think dmca was deserved in it’s sequencing It did get kinda boring by the 10th episode though
People criticise this game a lot, but I find it incredibly thought-provoking. Admittedly, most of those thoughts are about how terrible it is and what it would take to improve it. I think its largest problem is that is has a severe identity crisis. It wants to have all the over-the-top action and outlandish plot of the DMC series, but is painfuly afraid of being seen as campy or goofy. As such, it presents itself as incredibly serious and straight-faced, which only makes the flaws of the plot and writing all the more glaring. The identity crisis extends to the whole "wake up sheeple" message. While the game is ostensibly about standing up to the Man and fighting off his attempts to keep the populace docile and compliant, the game uses empty wish fulfillment in place of any meaningful political commentary. As such, DmC winds up being the exact same kind of shallow media that it criticises. The last bit of DmC's identity crisis is something Pat and Woolie have already talked about; the game not knowing if it wants to be a repeat of DMC1 or if it wants to be its own thing. Admittedly, it's not exactly easy to do a reboot well. Either one winds up just doing a rehash of the same old plot, or they change things so much that they alienate fans of the original. However, the game seems to vacillate wildly between ripping off the original and treating it with disdain; managing to piss off fans of the original in every possible way.
Good thing it's not a joke :) This is one of my favorite DMC games and it already has one up over DMC5 - it doesn't have microtransactions. As far as I'm concerned, DMC5 can fuck right off until those microtransactions are removed :)
I still hold strong to the fact that Devil Trigger is a disstrack from Vergil to Nero that he made after he stole his arm. This is good writing. This is why NinjaTam could not have used this song.
the discussion of dmc 5 reminds me of the feeling people had for RE7. after 6 and some of the spinoffs the series had fallen lower than it ever was and 7 needed to be FUCKING MINDBLOWING just to salvage a future for the series

The fact that they cant remember the second angel weapon is, is telling to this games significance, since pat can remember most Secret missions from DMC1.

the first prototype is the only game where the fist weapons looked alright. You had the big blocky hulk hands that were goofy but actually fun along with the more simple punch fists that just looked like some sorta armor stuff. God Prototype 1 was so fun.
4:03 yeah, the Rages are a pain to fight, but I'll admit that when I saw them when I first played this I was just happy to finally see a non-boss enemy that wasn't just a generic edgy goop mannequin.
I had one friend who had only been introduced to DMC2 and 4 before this, none of which he liked. He absolutely fell in. Then he reached the conclusion of Dante's story and stopped talking about the game.
One thig that is kinda cute is this game kinda makes Mundus a composite of all the main villains of the DMC series - save MAYBE Sanctus, but even then he kinda gets in on some Saviour action.

Tidbits about bands discussed: Combichrist are a well known and well liked aggrotech band, a niche genre of industrial and electro. THAT SAID, for the original music they made for DmC (not the licensed music provided by them), it's more generic industrial rock/metal instead of what they're famous for. This actually proved to be a trend for the band, as their last album was also more rock than aggrotech. Shootie HG is the stage name for vocalist Shawn McPherson, the vocalist who does the growling vocals for DMC3's soundtrack and a few tracks in DMC4. He is or was part of the band Hostile Groove which is a rap metal band I really liked, you can hear more of their work in the original Dead Rising (Fly Routine is probably their most well known, the grocery store psycho's theme). As far as I can tell they released one underrated album in 2006 and I haven't really heard from the band itself since.

I think the best thing about the DMC anime is not just seeing Dante in between games, but also show how wiped he is in his relationship with Lady and Trish. Cuz those two absolutely own his balls. The man is in a marriage with two women, just without the sex.
I always like the DMC anime. The music fit, the animation was fairly good, and the mostly self-contained stories worked for the show. Never really understood the hate it got.
The animation was pretty stiff most of the time. The art was good, not so much the animation. The anime gets hate because not only does it lack the stylish action of the games, it lacks action in general. It also butchers Dante's character and suffers from unmemorable plots.
Corrector1 I can see it lacking in action, and the stiff animation, but the way it characterized Dante felt about right if you look at how he was throughout the series. Maybe I just liked a lot because it was like a different Gungrave. Miss that show.
Dante's the way he was in the anime because it takes place after he killed Vergil so he depressed also the anime intended to more of a slice of life with action more than an action anime like the upcoming Netflix DMC anime
I remember waiting for this to come so I could get into Devil May Cry. Fortunately my demo kept breaking and I concluded to not buy broken stuff. I am glad this was not my proper entry into the series.

Andrei11 Dr it's called negativity bias. There's a lot of studies on it. Basically it says that negativity impacts you about twice as much as something positive. So for example if you lost 5 dollars you'd be super angry and it would take finding 10 dollars to make you neutral

Fun Fact. DmC sold just about as well as DMC2 and DMC3 did actually. Just slightly less because of the remaster. But on standalone release, original DmC stood with all the originals prior except DMC4.

@@kenronald6786 it doesn't matter. DMC4 had press and sale advantage because it was for new systems. DmC out sold the DMC HD Collections and each game prior in base form. Point is, DmC sold quite well for not just a game of its genre and a game by an independent dev, but as a DMC game as well.
I don't know how anybody can criticize the visual design, everything in this game looks fantastic, and everything I've seen of classic DMC looks like a cross between Final Fantasy and Doom 3, but less coherent.
