Man, that part with Dante holding Kat's hand through Limbo could have been a really nice, really touching moment. If they had any chemistry at all. And if, you know, Kat were at all a character.
In a better game or film, that would be a good scene, a man with all the power to destroy his enemies unable to interact with his female love interest...Instead, it's in angst Rage Against The Machine with demons game.
Yeah, if Kat were really just a cat that Donte adopted out of trash can and it just hung around all game and did nothing but be a cat. It would make them both multitudes better. But then the little trash gremlin would steal the show as the best chara, er, only character in the game.
Weirdest thing about that compound is that, in some paradoxical way, it's probably similar to what the original DMC was going to be, way back when it was still RE4, Sparda was Spencer and the twins were experiments like Wesker.
C'mon guys let's be fair. Dante hasn't shown any outright sexual attraction to Trish. He held her, screamed at the heavens and cried a little bit which yeah a little weird and not something you'd do for someone you just met but it's not horny incestual behaviour. And their dynamic in 4 suggests nothing more than a friendship.

Lady, a "prostitute" with gun, when surrounded by hordes of demons, pulled an acrobatic gun kata smockin sick style combo to decimate them while Dante is far away from her, doing his sick style combo too. Kat, a "good" female character, when surrounded by a SWAT team, scared as shit behind desk until Donte comes to her so she can think a way out. Geez, Ninja Theory, can you make her less... interesting? At least have her calm and study the situation if she cant fight. At least Kyrie throw herself to protect a child and she is a cardboard box
Imagine how much would be improved if Vergil just said 'Scum' and did a just frame Judgment Cut to that bladed butcher instead of it being a fight for Dante.
Imagine if leading up to Vergil’s room there’s just a bunch of mutilated demon corpses which would be a subtle way of showing that Vergil is hiding his true power or something
Kat being able to make sigils that Dante can interact with in game is actually a pretty cool idea. If only they made more use of that than just some QTEs.
How about instead of Kat working for Vergil, she's somebody that Dante has been paying to hide his trailer from demons and pull him out of limbo when he gets stuck. Then she could be involved in the game, and the relationships between the characters would actually make sense. Hey, I should be a writer for a big game studio!

I think you're misunderstanding the term "strong female character". It doesn't refer to physical strength or combat abilities. Being afraid to die doesn't make her a bad character or a weak character. Also that scene is really good.

I think that would have been interesting, like if the kat love sub plot wasnt forced here. Like dante breaks into the grounds and find virgil stright up tearing apat all the human riot police to which dante is like "but they are humans why are you killing them??" And virgil is just like "the death of the few will save the lives of the many" kinda bullshit and there is a kinda weird tension between dante and virgil for the misson and if kat get sacrificed like she was then that feeling should have sticked though the whole game
You know what would make Vergil's final boss battle more believable? If you came in and saw him fighting some demons in that server room, then Kat has to do the computer thingy and you and Vergil fought together in that arena, that would've been cool
Vergil's true nature was foreshadowed with the subtlety of a truck. The problem is buying his reasoning and the fact that he's the final boss. Also because we have someone to compare him to who's so much better.
Chris Chen True. He kind of gave it away when he said "meningitis is a human condition, Dante. You are not human." That was blatant foreshadowing of how he looks down on humans as weak and inferior.
They could have easily had Vergil kill that thing in a Cutscene to establish he can take care of himself in Limbo, then have the fight to protect Kat. There was no need to have the player kill another worthless Butcher.
I agree. But there is an entire school of thought in game design that seems to be against action sequences in cutscenes. I get where they are coming from ... but there are times when it is appropriate
the reasoning behind it is that Vergil is trying to hide the fact he exists. if another asshole dragged into Limbo is able to suddenly destroy everything in his path, whatever force watching Dante in Limbo (y'know, the one screaming bitch at him all the itme) would probs be like "... hey Mundus.... this new guy exists... and he appears to have what seems to be the Yamato... the thing that cuts your hellgate apart? should we worry bout that?" now thats the in game reasoning. personally i still think thats entirely bullshit and i am sure they would have searched the house for shit and found records of Vergil existing thus been on guard against a second Nephilim... but hey... this is from the dude that said Kat was better than any woman in the Dante DMC games.... writing aint his strong point apparently.... atleast in this one.
@@PolarPhantom it's really not clear. i would assume they can atleast be partially dragged into limbo, considering the "prison" and what you see in Mundus's offices, they defo cant be fully in the real world considering how they are acting and flying about and shit. it's just normal people become those shade looking things and go insane super fast. while i suspect if Kat was dragged in she would mostly be fine but unable to do shit (y'know, like how she is in the real world) it's just unlike Donte and Virgil they probs have to do something specific to drag them in and not just force limbo phase or whatever around them like with the brothers cause... i dunno, as the brothers are mostly supernatural and have closer ties to the eatherial nature of things, they're more vulnerable to that shit. i will say this is all entirely my assumption from playing the game a couple times and trying to apply some sense to it all, as far as i am aware this is not addressed at all in any way past the mediums stuff. even then it's still really vague.

But they portrayed her as pretty much cowarding away from everything I just think they could have done that much differently to actually make her a stronger character like they said the would. I quite like that bit at 28:40. He's basically walking her through a piece of the shit he's had to endure at the hands of the police as he tried to fight back and failed. I think it's a neat little bit of characterization... Shame about everything else in the game.
Hey, why didn't Kat just summon Dante back to the real world to help her, or go to Limbo herself? Wouldn't Dante just easily destroy all of the cops by himself and be able to save Kat? He is already considered a murderer and these cops are clearly evil, no reason not to at this point.

Things that could make this part of the game better: 1: Red Mask guy turns out to be Vergil testing Dantes skills for later, which would show that Vergil is not only smart because he hides his identity perfectly, but also that he is a strong fighter when he needs to be and is hiding his skills when he doesn't put on the mask. It would also make for great foreshadowing from the start of the game when Vergil was talking behind a mask to the public. 2: Show Kat is capable by herself but still needs help from Dante, she is a witch god damn it, have her use traps and seals to make her way past swat and only needing Dantes help with inhuman things like breaking down walls and slowing swat down, she is supposed to be smart and doesn't need to be yelled at by Dante to "Think". 3: Have Dante walk in on Vergil easily killing the Butcher attacking the seal to the computers with a Judgement cut, this throws people off of the Red Mask reveal later as it's a move that it never uses and it shows that Vergil while not a real fighter like Dante, isn't completely useless and it gets people hype to see more of him. 4: Don't have Dante run away at the end, instead he has to make a choice, leave and hope Kat's surrender lets her live or stay and have her summon him to the real world and have to kill the swat to allow her to escape, facing the first time he has ever had to kill a real human and deciding it was something he hated to reaffirm his devotion to hating Demons. This of course doesn't allow Kat to escape, she can ether be captured by demons as it's obviously some one important to Dante and Vergil, or the Red Mask Demon captures her and delivers her to the police himself to be arrested as a way for Vergil to remove any weakness from Dante and to direct his anger towards Mundus. 5: Make the Data actually IMPORTANT! All it would take is one line from Vergil saying "These computers have all of the Orders information on them, plans, hides outs, and the identity of people who helped the Order or are working as double agents. If they get their hands on it a lot more people will die and our plans to take down Mundus are destroyed!" and with that the player has a reason to stay behind, Vergils real motives are masked over some belief he is doing this to help others while really just playing off Dantes emotions, and it makes Kat's capture feel like a loss still while not completely losing.

You know what would have been a GREAT reason to protect those drives? If Vergil said "It contains information on our plans, hides outs and everyone working with The Order, not just the ones that are here right now" and it implies Vergil is trying to protect his organization from dying completely from this attack. I'm sure some do hold that opinion, but I think they're wrong because The Last Jedi isn't subversive. Or, rather, it's not subversive if you really delve deep and pay attention, which I only did after watching the film. From what The Force Awakens set up, as well as the mythic structure of Star Wars and what Lucas, as flawed as he may be, intended, in hindsight I can say with confidence that The Last Jedi follows up on what was set up perfectly. SPOILERS If, for example, you're pissed off about Rey's parents being nobodies then please remember that Maz Kanata straight up tells her they're never coming back and will never be important. Why, then, would you think her dad would be Luke or Han? Obi Wan maybe if you really wanna stretch it but that's not the point. The point is that Rey needs to look ahead and not backwards and that was clear throughout TFA as well as TLJ. People trying to prove some special lineage are like Rey trying desperately to find out her parents weren't scum. I could go on about why it's fine she's strong with the Force and how demanding she have some special parent is both foolish in canon because almost every Jedi in the prequels had normal parents and that this is a very creepy Eugenics-fueled idea, but I will leave that for now. And probably forever. I may never look at this comment again. And if you are talking smack about The Last Jedi... why? Do you just trudge through comments looking for opportunities to rant about it? Cause I didn't mention it at all until now.
Stupid thing 10: the more I watch of this game, the more I remember just how much it forces the player to wait between combat encounters. Generally it's not as noticeable (since the game typically has you running through overly large and barren environments during these moments), but having Donte fight through waves of enemies in that server room while on a non-existent timer ticks down is *really* blatant. Was this a hardware limitation for the PS3/360 that Ninja Theory had to account for or a stylistic choice? If it's the latter then it fucking sucks. Reminder on the Vergil/Kat relationship too: apparently they were intimate prior to DmC, but Vergil erased her memories when he felt like she was making him weaker (you know, by not being a complete self absorbed twat) and so her could better use her as a tool. So not only did Vergil groom Kat to be a useful asset to his cause (and possibly to be his lover), but the moment he realised he might care about someone other than himself he stole her memories and agency as a person. He's a total creep.
Man, that might frankly push Vergin into potential Complete Monster territory. Of course, a sequel will never happen, so he'd never really count, but still.
Lore time! Bob Barbas gives out an angel weapon because he’s actually a fallen angel, who worships Mundus as a new god. And, the reason that there is angel trigger, just like there is no devil movement options is also due to story reasons (that are not mentioned in the story). Angels move, dodge, fly, and fight at a distance- this is why Osiris and Aquila have such long range, and why the angel whip pulls YOU and you get an angel fly. Demons fight, fight, and fight, which is why it’s the Devil Trigger (FOR DAMAGE) and up close weapons like the socker boppers and an axe, and why the whip pulls things to you.
So I had an idea on how to fix this game's story and make it interesting. When Sparda (a demon knight who turned against his own kind and married an angel, living with her on earth and fighting for humanity) and his wife Eva (Angel who similarly abandoned heaven to live on Earth) are found by the demon assassins, Eva grabs the boys and runs while Sparda stays to fight the demons, Dante gets separated and somehow escapes but is lost. Eva and Vergil are cornered by an assassin demon and Eva is slain but as she dies, Vergil absorbs her power, which causes his previously black hair to become white with power, but makes him easier to track because his power is detectable while Dante is below the radar but still strong. This explains why Vergil is in hiding. Sparda is captured and chained, and is kept in Mundus' personal chambers a trophy of his triumph and superiority. He's also possibly being used as a battery of power? (Depends on whether you want to paint Mundus as a leech of power, the cause for his world dominating power?). Then the game proceeds as normal. Dante is who he is and at the end when he kills Mundus, he frees his father who is emaciated but proud of his son, he dies in his son's arms, Dante absorbs his pwoer and his hair becomes white, and he absorbs his father as a Devil Arm, the sword Sparda. Instead we got this.
Listen, these guys with guns will only be in a few cutscenes in two levels, we can only afford to make one model of "guy with a gun", but we have several gun models laying around. So yeah, when we have him carrying some kind of bullpup rifle, which is shorter, his hand is kind of holding the air where a longer rifle like an AK or an M4 would still have the handguard. But c'mon, nobody will notice that.
The joys of having content creators whose only knowledge of guns is that they go pew pew and make the bad guys go away when you pull the trigger. That's a good way to lose his hand.
Anyone else wanna see Vergil getting his own versions of Aquila and Osiris in DMC5? I think they would suit him. ...not as much as the sniper rifle though.

2:36 THIS is why DMD mode SUCKS ASS in this game. Almost *every single enemy* has angel/devil specific weaknesses. It doesn't particularly make things harder; It just trivializes combats to the point of boredom and severely limits the variety of combos you can do.
So here's something I don't get. What data were Vergil and Kat actually so goddamn concerned about grabbing off the servers? Their "plans"? Outside of the introduction, the Order's been depicted as basically a three-man job up to now, and it's not like taking down Bob Barbas or destroying Virility have required much careful strategizing, certainly not terabytes' worth -- every major blow against Mundus has been "send Dante to style on this location, and Kat can pull him out when he's done". You could fit Vergil's onscreen plans into a small Word doc. We never see the rest of the Order until they're all getting gunned down. We don't know anything else that they've done since they appear to have made zero impact until Dante came along. By the time they're worried about the data, they've already lost their bafflingly huge headquarters and most of their manpower, and Vergil knows Kat is going to be captured. And Mundus *already knows* Dante is going for his weak spots, so I doubt having information about where Dante is going next would do much to hurt the cause. The only other thing I could think for Vergil to worry about is his plan for taking over the demon world at the end, but... why would he write that down or save it in a server? He's the only one who needs to know about it, and it's not actually a complex plan at all. Color me befuddled.
I never saw it. original Dante having a crush on Trish? he cares about her because she looks like his dead mother, but that's about it, that what I saw. The ending in dmc 1 was cheesy and funny tho, but a normal reaction to have. I think they act more like friends, and room-mates and also abit as rivals who are messing with each who is better mostly they all act abit like Dante now, later on in the series. (counting dmc 4 and the anime) I see him acting abit flirty to Lady more... but in dmc 3 only, but he was acting more like kid teasing around then anything else.

In the beginning of the game Kat said Dante could shoot her dead from limbo. Doesn't that mean he could intervene in this raid? I'm not saying he should be killing the swat team, but he's invisible to them right? What's stopping him from incapacitating them?
I think the idea is that because Kat is sort of "in between" she can be affected by stuff in Limbo. Dante cannot harm the Swat team, whom are fully a part of the "real world".
When Dante enters the room he can see Vergil getting his sword ready. Dante just steps in and fights the monster. Vergil could have fought it but he didn't get a chance.
Dante enters the room, the Butcher is already there banging on the seal while Vergil is cowaring behind it with his sword at the ready for after it breaks. Vergil is in Limbo so there is nothing he could do with the computers really meaning there was not much of a reason for him to be behind the seal to begin with, meaning if he really could fight the Butcher as well as Dante he had no reason to not be doing that and then go back to the computers. Dante rushes in and fights the demons with out a second thought, he doesn't hesitate or considers them a possible threat, something Vergil does not do. Vergil considers fighting as a last resort for himself which is why he sits back and does nothing while Dante does literally all of the work for him.
Vergil isn't weak. Thw game literally tells you that the reason he isn't doing any fighting is because Mundus doesn't know he exists, and that's an advantage they can't afford to lose, but if he would start fighting even one demon like the big fat in Limbo, they risk Mundus finding out there's another nephilim.
People keep saying Kat was suppose to be a "strong female character" but that's not the actual quote from Tameem. The quote people are thinking of is that Tameem and NT don't design female characters with big breasts as it's lazy and they try to create female characters you could imagine as your girlfriend (referencing Trip from Enslaved as an example of this done right) then said "That to me is more attractive than a prostitute walking around with a big gun" which is clearly a not-so-subtle reference to Lady & Trish in DMC4. Kat is suppose to be the damsel in distress you save from the big jerk Vergil, she's not suppose to be deep, she's suppose to be your waifu.

1. Enemies not attacking while not on screen is something always in DMC and Bayo. 2. Kay and Vergil actually did have a romantic relationship in the DmC comic. He then erased her memory of it. 3. Donte never murdered innocent people, it’s just a smear campaign. 4. They’re chakrams.
ChillTerumi if they start their attacks then go off screen they’ll still attack. But then don’t start attacks off screen, that’s why people adjust camera to stop any other enemy attacks.

So wait...does Dante have powers outside of limbo, is he just human in the human world? Because I can't think of a reason why he didn't just drop in the middle of the SWAT team and Arbitered them all to death. And why did Vergil wait so long before giving Dante the shotgun...actually why didn't he just give it to Dante when they met before sending him to the demon infested Ancestral Sparda Manor? And if Vergil has been running the Order for years why didn't he already have backups in case he had to wipe the slate and run? Also, backups of what. The schematics of Mundus's building? His browser history? The script for this game? That should not need several minutes to download, right? I suppose I should not be too caught up on details at this point, but I am feeling unusually bugged by this stuff. Oh hey the ONE COOL ENEMY in this game makes an appearance and vanishes before we can enjoy his presence. B ranking stands for Blueballs now.
How did Dante’s model not get noticed that his jacket clipped through the bottom of his shirt in a cutscene at 29:54 during development? Did no one see that while testing? Because it seems obvious to me lol

The better and more frustrating question, why did Dante have the ability to help Kat at all? He was still IN Limbo that whole time. Why was he able to follow her completely unhindered? Doesn't Limbo just spawn demons to fight him all the time, and shift so he can't act in the normal environment? The answer is laziness. ewe
So how close are we to the best of the Vergilmobile? Also...the more I look at Donte, especially with the song playing at 2:00...the more I think he looks like Ruby Rose's angsty older brother.
Y'know, thinking about it, this whole game could've had the dynamic of Vergil fighting alongside Dante as an ally. Like instead of him cowering against a single enemy, you team up and fight a wave of enemies like in Arkham 2. Could've had the game we all wanted with Dante and Vergil co-op being more of a focus. And it's not like "there was no time to program that" or anything, all his moves are there for, y'know, that thing we wait the whole game for. Yet they go out of the way to tell the player and Dante how weak Vergil is and then expect anyone to take him seriously at the end. Just keep the basic moveset and AI and have it target enemies and not the player. It's not even a "unfortunate they couldn't do it" situation, it's just a weird lack of ambition or any coherent vision of what the game should be.
"How does this place stay hidden at all? Look at how big it is!" It looks big because Dante is seeing Limbo. They had a detailed conversation early in the game about how places in Limbo are dramatically more expansive than their real-world counterparts, and then show it to you as you see the Virility warehouse literally explode into a gigantic platforming mission spread out atop an endless void... and would demonstrate this same visual point relentlessly through the entire game.
I'm still of the opinion that the original DMC still has the best enemies. I loved that shapeshifting shadow cat thing. The intro to the Dreamreaver almost harkens back to that with quasi-rivalry dynamic happening, wherein you don't even get to finish the fight. Dante was obviously aware of demons and Limbo in the first level. He initially tries to reject Kat's help on the basis that he already knows how to escape Limbo. And even explains to Kat later on that he went to a school or orphanage blah blah blah that was run by demons (which he killed). The only thing Kat and Vergil needed to explain to him was the origin of his powers.
yes, absolutely best enemy for this game. actually has an intro, isn't some repeat of a puppet or marionette and has a legitimate play mechanic and the design is cool looking for a dmc game

Does the game ever actually say Vergil is weak? I only remember Vergil saying the demons don't know he is a Nephalim. I interpreted not fighting as keeping his secret
He can fight, but due to his easier upbringing (he was adopted intoa wealthy family while Dante got the streets) he's not as experienced and reactive like Dante, who's been fighting since he was a kid.
Damn, Red Mask reminds me of that bald priest from the Castlevania Netflix series. The one who's eye Trevor whipped out and later came back as a demon enemy. The agility, bladed-weapons, and status as a kind of mini-boss made me think of him.
That attack that Pat did against the WSitch at 2:57 just sounds like someone banging on an aluminum pipe. Fuckin' outstanding foley work Ninja Theory. /s
