Hello and welcome to my most controversial video ever! In addition to sharing my thoughts on the best lens for street photography, there will be a slideshow of photos from a recent day of street photography with this very lens after that discussion. See timecode in description if you’d like to avoid the controversy ;)

The old dogma "only short prime lenses make you a real street photographer" never dies. You can choose whatever works best for you to tell your story. That being said it's important to be aware of how the look and feel of a photo changes depending on which focal length one chooses. My favorite focal length for street photography is 28mm FF equivalent (XF18mm f2), but since I use Fujifilm GFX cameras for most of my work the GF 35-70mm (28-55mm FF) gets used a lot. I hope Fujifilm will release a GF 35mm f3.5 pancake like the GF 50mm. That would be a nice combo on the GFX 50R. Thanks for your great example images! I will explore the city hall campus next time. It seems like there are a lot of nice photo opportunities there.

Hello! Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences. I am really glad there are so many ways to approach street photography, or any type of photography. I am also glad there are so many great lens options available to show different viewpoints of the world around us by the way different focal lengths convert our real world into a two-dimensional image. All part of the fun and magic to explore! Best wishes on your photography adventures!

Interesting and “controversial” topic. My favorite lens for street photography is the XF33 f/1.4, but as you mentioned, a prime lens could be (and is) limiting, so for me the next best thing in Fuji world is the XF16-80, it's very well made and its flexibility doesn’t sacrifice focusing speed or image quality. The zoom with your feet philosophy doesn't always work, many times while walking around with the XF33 (or the XF23 f/2) and I’m done zooming in or out with my feet the subject has moved or disappeared. Excellent collection of images, I really enjoyed the “slideshow”. Be well and stay safe.

Hi Enrique! The more I use the 16-80mm, the more I enjoy it. I've even used it for some product photography on a secret project (video on May 16) and really like the images. I have found, though, that I have some lens creep when pointing straight down (overhead product photos) when not at 80 or 16mm. Not the end of the world, and may be due to I am a bit rough with gear. Cheers!

16-80 is a superb lens, fantastic in my case for travel. For street I still prefer primes and 28mm (18). I like to move and get closer because that gives me a sense of risk, action, close encounter hunting… adrenaline shot. Long focal lenses and zooms tend to be bigger, and that’s weight for long shooting days, and even from the distance you are much more noticed. Interesting discussion! Great video!

I primarily shoot landscape photography, and really enjoy the 16-80 for that. I do love to travel through so that's usually when I shoot street, and I have found the 16-80 and 27 are a perfect combo for that, especially since I'm usually at f5.6 anyways so both lenses are more than sharp enough.

Thanks, Bill! I usually still carry the 10-24mm and 70-300mm, as "just in case" lenses. The vast majority of street photos lately have been with the 16-80mm and I find it's a great do-(almost)-everything lens. Cheers!

That’s my favorite street photography lens too! It’s sharp enough, has beautiful transitions between in and out of focus areas, buttercreme bokeh, is light enough for an all-day trek on a ratted out X-T2. My particular copy has a loose lens hood and sharpness starts to fall off enough I rarely use it at 70mm or longer, but it’s not enough for me to leave it at home or sell it off. That one can go from 16 to 80mm or anywhere in between in a quick flick is a huge advantage on the streets.

I'm a newbie photographer and have done a bit of street/cityscape with my one and only lens: the Tamron 18-300. Such a big lens isn't ideal, but still pretty doable as I learn what focal lengths I prefer. So far I'm surprisingly gravitating around the 35-50mm and 90-100 range (APS-C, not 35mm equivalent). Very few of my non-travel shots are below 35. I need more data, but if the pattern continues I may go for the Fuji 35mm or 50mm f2 and Samyang 75mm f1.8 (the Fuji 90mm f2 is a better focal length for me but may be too expensive unless I can find it cheap used). I've nothing against zooms, but the Fuji 50-140 is way too heavy and expensive for my needs, and is the only zoom I'm aware of that covers the focal lengths I seem to use most!
@MSladekPhoto
@MSladekPhoto 3 месяца назад
Hi! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. That's cool you've paid attention to where you tend to "see" in your use of focal lengths. That's usually very valuable insight for next lens decision. The 50-140 is a lens I've never used for street photography as it gets noticed so much, even though I love that focal length range and the image quality. The 90mm f/2 is an amazing lens for street photography, and if you find one used, I highly recommend it. I just checked, and the camera store I work at, has a used one for $549. The 16-80 is also my favorite lens for most days on the street. The autofocus is great and when combined with the 40mp sensor and great IBIS on my XT5, my hit rate is excellent. I will usually toss my 27mm 2.8 (TTArtisan) pancake lens in the bag since that works well in more crowded situations or low light.

@@MSladekPhoto I also picked up this AF lens when it released and have really loved it. I did a comparison with my friends Fuji 27 mk1, and the Fuji is a bit sharper at 2.8 with better contrast, and much less vignette and flare. But after f4 they are basically indistinguishable, and the TTA has better AF. The TTA definitely also has more 'character' wide open than the Fuji, especially with a very swirly cats eye bokeh, and while that will be a downside for a lot of people I personally like it. But I couldn't even find a new Fuji 27 in stock at the time, and the used prices were also insane, so this lens offers a ton of value for like 1/4 of the price and I'm really happy with it.

The orange jacket /chairs shots, woman on the phone, flower along the wall and 14:13 shots are phenomenal! Technique related comment - on my monitor, examples at 3:14 5:00 6:42 7:03 12:08 12:41 13:04 13:19 13:13 14:21 14:24... the subjects seem lost in the bright highlights from overall cloudy lighting bouncing off of concrete roads, metal poles, glass/windows and white billboards/posters in the background. On my Sony rx100 vi, I pair the AF point to the spot metering while shooting such challenging situations. It gives me more contrast and deeper colors, helps subject separation. I do use the exp comp dial, open aperture and pick up shadows in post though. I also use a magnetic polarizing filter when applicable. I find that I get more keepers this way.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s sad that using a zoom for street photography is overlooked. Especially among content creators. This is a terrific option for the reasons you give. Plus, it’s weather sealed, optically stabilized for older X series bodies, and it’s great value for money! Great video.

After shooting with zoom lenes for many years I recently switched to the Fuji system and have been using only the 18mmf2 and 35mmf1.4 and so far for compositon i’m loving the 18mm I have found that using zooms over the years just makes you a lazy photographer whilst a prime lens makes you work and think outside the square forcing you to be a more creative photographer under any conditions as a result my images have improved.

Well argued video and nice slide-show. I own the 16-80mm which I think is great for travel photography. Though I’ve used it for street I’m afraid I still prefer a small prime - in my case the 35mm f1.4. Aside from the size/weight issue, I find the prime lens forces me to look for the best composition I can achieve within the limitation of the lens and the speed of my feet. Paradoxically perhaps, I find that having to choose which focal length to use for the ‘best’ composition actually slows me down and/or can lead me to make the wrong choices. But, as others have commented, whatever works for you…….

I used point and shoot cameras in the last decade as my main camera to document moments (I'm not a pro). Now, I'm just beginning to use cameras with interchangeable lenses, an old Sony NEX-5. I definitely miss the easy composition using the zoom of point and shoot. But I also own an old Canon SX40 (bridge camera), I like it since it has a better resolution than my previous point and shoot (but not against the NEX-5), and longer reach, and can be operated with just one hand. I'm thinking that Sony RX10 will fit my style and values. It is also a bridge camera. I'll look forward to have one, soon.

I’ve been doing and studying street photography on and off for 50 years. To me the perfect street photography lens in a 35mm full frame or equivalent. Sometimes 24, 28, 40 or 50mm also works. I consider Gary Winogrand to have been the quintessential street photographer and he used a Leica M with either a 28mm or 35mm throughout his career. To me having a small unobtrusive lens is important another thing I appreciate is a tilt screen vs. a swing out screen for the same reason. But in reality whatever works for you.
