Wouxun KG-935G Radio: LDSPrepper.com... After testing many handheld GMRS, HAM, FRS, MURS radios, and brands like Wouxun, Midland, Baofeng, Retevis, Motorola, in my opinion the Wouxun KG-935G is the best family emergency radio.
I have several cheaper GMRS radios and the more expensive 835 G. The difference in Transmit and Receive is like night and day. Sitting in my living room and transmitting to a somewhat distant repeater ( Ashton, ID to BYU Rexburg, ID) I can not only get far clearer receive, but the people I'm talking to report full quieting vs. somewhat scratchy audio from the cheaper radios. I think this is due to three things about the 835 G. Better front end, more power and a very good stock antenna. There is no need to upgrade to a better antenna with the 835 G. It's a great radio, and I urge anyone serious about your communication, to buy a 835 G. Yes, it's not cheap. You will save $20.00 by not having to buy a decent antenna. I learned a lot before getting a license just watching RU-vid and people like you and the guys we all know on here. I only key up late at night to see if I or what repeater's I could reach(only when I was sure no one was on). You don't get the same learning experience as you would with a license for sure but good enough to operate in emergency. Now HF is a must especially if you plan on transmit. I wouldn't dare even key up on HF because it wouldn't do much(you know). Anyway I just use respect when using without a license until I got mine but I did learn a lot from you guys before I got a license so it can be done to a extent. Thanks for the content brother
You are welcome. I'm glad to see you are respecting the need for a license in order to transmit. You can see the limitation and frustration of not having one. But while you are waiting, hopefully you've already applied for a license, you can listen in and learn the "lay of the land".
@@LDSPrepper That's the plan I got into the prepping game late and didn't realize how important ham radio is and I ended up liking it as a hobby. I want to get the equipment so I have it and extra parts coax power banks(it's a lot $$$). I just learn watching hours of you guys(a lot to learn). Just need to secure a HF rig and set up and gonna just go for all the license back to back. I the first test I practiced a few times never missed any. I have heard and I know the general license tho is a whole new ball game.....HF is a different beast just started diving into that. I was lucky when I got my age of radio they sold it to me before I had my license I guess it was Covid and they needed the money! I’m also looking I had a receiver that I could make sure it actually worked! You said the king up on HF isn’t going to do much try it while looking at the Keewee STR and see how far your signal gets!😊
@@chadvandam7179 What are you on about? I did say that I haven't had anytime on HF. I still don't know everything about UHF/VHF and understand how it's works in general how hf requires you to caught and separate signals or transmit you have dial frequencies it's not the same and using end fed wire you choose ground or high place antenna. I know enough that with in a week or two I'd could figure out how to make a consistent contact. You know it's not hard to figure out or get the basics down it's all the 100s-1000s bits of information and knowledge it takes to get good and be in total control and go where you want to when riding the air waves. Chill brother we all on the same team taker down a notch....I promise you will as live a lot longer.

I just received my Wouxun KG-UV9GX radio and love it. I understand about 90% of the menus but need some to do some more research on RU-vid or purchase a good book about GMRS.
David - I have a GMRS license and use a wouxun KGUV9G (have 2) which also will monitor shtf emergency bands, as well as a fewBtech V1. Additionally, I now have 3 Generarc solar batteries and solar panels.
I am trying as the economy is very uncertain and am not sure how the banks will fare. I've been moving some $ to a good local credit union, farm bank and a large regional bank. Glenn Beck said to put $ in a credit union.
When you talk about the DTMF Encode/Decode feature what you are describing is CTCSS scanning. DTMF are tones that represent the numbers on the keypad. Like when you call a business and it says push 3 for sales, the noise it makes when you push 3 is a DTMF tone.
THanks for the video. I have the Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO GMRS and like it.. It has SHTF programming including air bands. My base /mobile is the wouxun kg-1000g 50watt. They are my favorite GMRS radios. I became interested in GMRS after the George FLoyd unrest here in Minneapolis. I am block neighborhood watch captain and patrolled with neighbors evenings for 2 weeks while the national guard Blackhawks flew overhead. As an Early Election Judge, I was also recruited to man an emergency satellite 311 phone center where I became aware of citizens being unable to get help on 911.
@@theemergencyprepguy Most people have the FRS radios which have the same frequencies as GMRS. If you wan to communicate with them you'll need something other then HAM radio.
Howdy I got the Wouxun kg 935g a couple of weeks ago and I really like it. Thank you for making this video because now that I made this decision to get this radio I'm going to narrow my Views to just people that have this radio because over the past few months I subscribed to many many radio RU-vidrs. I haven't connected to a repeater yet but I did find one so I guess now I got to read the directions again and again on how to do it but I'm hesitant LOL.
You may have already used MyGMRS.com to find local repeaters but if you find an active group of GMRS users you may find additional repeaters that are not listed online.
I've gotten plenty of practice with this radio but sadly I can't connect to the only available repeater because where I live is mountainous and he's not in range of where I live.
If it’s an actual emergency earthquake, flood, tornado you can use any radio in an emergency! So there’s no reason of a special radio for emergencies! You just need to know what frequencies you’re on to make sure they’re the same! Lol I always do love it on FRS When I hear a conversation, and then ask for a signal report a little kid gets frightened and asks his dad were they should switch bands! Dad says yes, and the kid says you need to channel 3! Dad‘s like shush! And then they change
The reason that rig has a descramble option is that they were designed for other uses in china. They designed it for public service use, where scrambling is legal. The scramble function isn't available stateside. But they left the descramble in there. That name is pronounced o-shing by the way!
Thanks for the video. Up here in canada, we don’t have licenses, but limits on power. I really like the idea of being able to hear different bands, like police etc…and be able to transmit on regular channels. I have a couple unlocked UV 5 Rs to transmit if I need to. So it sounds like prepping is alive and well down there. Up here in big cities like Montreal, we stopped all that stuff. Like really nothing. I feel like the church is losing its way sometimes, but seeing your videos gives me hope that it’s not systemic, but more of a big city kinda thing.

How is this better than the Wouxun KG-UV9GX? The 9GX is a superheterodyne radio as opposed to a SOS (system on a chip) and comes pre-programmed for SHTF frequencies. It also has all of the other features that you list in your video.
Good point. Both radios are excellent. I like that the KG-935G is IP66 rated vs the lower rating of IP55. To me preprogrammed frequencies that I don't use and most other people don't use doesn't have any benefit to me. It just makes it confusing to find the channel you want to use. My brother has a preprogrammed "SHTF" radio and, like most everyone else, only uses maybe a dozen frequencies. It really depends on what you are after in a radio.
@@LDSPrepper I agree the pre-programmed isn't a huge benefit. The UV9GX does cover a wider range of frequencies for the scanning capabilities, including air bands. Expanded RX capabilities could be a benefit in an emergency situation.
Hmmm. I had to think about this a moment. Both are good radios. The thing about most of the frequencies not being useful is a bit misleading when you think about it. What I mean here is there are two use models in effect; 1) Everyday use and 2) shtf use. So, the channels you are using as everyday are a few simple channels. For shtf, that changes, potentially in a big way. For instance in an shtf scenario you may begin to wonder if the nearby prison is intact or are the criminals free and potentially heading your way. In this case, the dept of corrections channels that you would ignore today, suddenly become real interesting. Similarly, the power goes out and you have no internet, no phone etc but you hear sirens all over the place and you have no idea whats going on. Now all the fire/police/etc channels make sense. So, long story short, if you have an shtf radio, unless you are in shtf, the preprogrammed stuff may not seem all that valuable but don't dismiss it. But in a bigger sense, I think this is an example where you want to fire up the programmer and edit your frequencies. In fact this is probably a good idea anyway since your needs will be unique and shuffling around the memories makes a lot of sense to fit your goals. Another thing to note is you can buy an adapter to allow you to connect your ht to a much better antenna like the Midland MXTA26 ( a mobile whip antenna). With that you will find your reception and transmissions to be much clearer. A final note: Print the channel list and annotate it if you have to. Looking at the channels only on the radio is pretty fruitless overall since he had to abbreviate most of the services and who knows what half of them mean.

I have to disagree. We in the USA have 911 for a reason. Its fast and simple. I think a radio in an emergency should be the same. FRS GMRS Hamm should be so simple a child could use it. to change from Ham , to GMRS and again to FRS is too slow and complicated for a simple user. hand one to the typical wife and she would not even know what it was. I think it Could be a great radio if it was simplified more. plus Hamm users get so butt hurt seeing youtube videos showing how to use this radio on FRS... if its a true emergency, you should know how...
Why do you want radios with so many of the transmit frequencies locked out in line with some arbitrary regulation? Having scan groups is invaluable. Can you add a channel to one group, then skip the same frequency in another group. Having these radios, not practicing with them will not help you.
I mentioned I have several UV-5R radios. The UV-5R is on HAM uhf/vhf frequencies, not GMRS. It also doesn't perform nearly as well. There is a different difference in performance.
@@LDSPrepper I've had really good luck with mine, being able to transmit 20+ miles and communicate with friends and families. I mostly went with the UV-5R because for the same price as the Wouxun I can have one for each family member instead of one for just me. I'm not saying the UV-5R is better, just an option for others like me who can afford to have several Wouxons.

the KG-935G is a can send and receive on the GMRS frequencies. It can receive on the "HAM" frequencies but not send. Some people transmit on GMRS frequency on a UV5R but they are not made for GMRS. Even if they did you could not transmit back to them. The KG-935G won't transmit on frequencies that are not GMRS.
I'm new to all this. I recently bought the kg-935g. If gmrs and frs share the same channels and can't be changed, then why can i change all those channel frequencies in the wouxun software? I saw in another video that repeater channels are designated for channels 15-22, but I can program repeaters into all the other channels.
Excellent question. You may be able to move a frequency from one channel to a different channel but you can't actually put in a non-GMRS frequency and transmit on it. I wouldn't move or change any of the first 1-22 channels because then you won't be able to talk to everyone else who has a FRS/GMRS radio on the programmed frequencies that are standard on those channels. As you saw on the video I added my local repeater channels starting at channel 31 as to not "mess" with the factory programming.
@@LDSPrepper awesome, that makes sense. Then my next question is are all the default/preprogrammed channels/frequencies on the Wouxun standard for all other gmrs and frs radios. Like if I went to Walmart and picked up a set of walkie talkies, would all the channels in those walkies be the same as the wouxun?
@@MiscerVids Hi, I realize your question is a year old but in case someone drives by and sees this I figured I'd answer. There are two distinctions here. The first is that the FCC defines the channels and their related parameters. Second, the manufacturer defines how they setup the radio to use those channels. Most manufacturers setup their radios to be pretty similar but if you have a radio with more than basic features then you may find a bunch of other channels defined. Often these are just channels that are programmed to use a particular CTCSS code etc. On the other hand, if you get a solid higher end radio like a Wouxun UV9 series, kg-935g etc or similar, then you will have lots of memory slots you can fill. Depending on what that radios capabilities are you may be able to fill them not only with gmrs freq but also be able to have freq like ham 2m, ham 70cm, noaa, atc, and a plethora of others. Keep in mind if you have a gmrs radio it means for transmitting purposes you can only transmit on the gmrs channels but you can hear all these others (if your radio is equipped to do so like the Wouxan uv9gx). With all that background, now lets address your specific question. Certainly you can only transmit on the set frequencies associated with FRS/GMRS services. But all those memories all for the two situations I mentioned above. 1. Creating "channels" that are really just one of the gmrs channels with a specific CTCSS code associated with it. It effectively looks like additional channels. 2. The kg-935g has a lot of listening capability. It will listen to all those other frequencies I mentioned. This is really handy in emergencies since you can gather intel on what the situation is from a plethora of sources. The radios have scanners built in so you can have them scanning freq/channels looking for activity during an emergency. Overall good capabilities.
Really not far, but can be extended with better antenna and height of that radio. This is really just for communication within a mile. Forget the BS about 5 or 10 miles. Granted in certain climates/terrains extended range can be possible. Get a ham handheld if range is important.
That depends on several factors. The quality of the radio components make a big difference. This radio, with an external antenna, makes clear communications to 17 miles. I'll have a detailed video on that setup. I haven't tested it further so it could go further distance then 17 miles. As a rule of thumb you could expect 1 mile per watt on any FRS, GMRS or HAM handheld radio with standard antenna.
it depends on what is between you and the other radio if you have clear line of sight to the other radio you can talk for miles if your in town with buildings you will get a mile or 2 at best

All the radios mentioned in this video can be used in Canada. I would find out if there is a group or organization that has a comms network setup and see what they are using.
LOL, that depends on what you feel you need. If you just need one radio with no accessories then just order the single radio. Maybe someone can educate me on this subject. I have a baufeng for SHTF but have never bothered to get the ham license. I just don’t understand, in an SHTF grid down situations, what good is it to have a radio that needs a repeater to work ? Won’t repeaters also go down ? Wouldn’t all radios just become or will be used like a walkie talkie without repeaters ? I’d rather have radios like the one you are testing to communicate with family and friends or a CB radio.
The Baofeng does not need a repeater. I can use a repeater but doesn't need one. This radio is the same as far as repeaters. I recommend finding a local HAM group and joining so you get to know the people, get help, and learn how to use the radio before SHTF.

Some repeaters have back-up power (batteries, generators, solar). Repeaters relying on generator power will have limitations depending on how much fuel is stored at the site, and if there is a way to replace the fuel for the generator. I have two GMRS repeaters in operation. As of now, I just have battery back-up, but when the spring thaw comes, I will get solar charging installed at those sites. Repeaters are nice, but for emergency communications, knowing your SIMPLEX range is critical. The time to figure that out is now. You can establish a relay system to pass information over extended distances.
@@LDSPrepper you may not know anyone with a CB, but probably drive next to someone who does 100 times a day…and very often with the person monitoring it. No other band can make this claim. There are literally millions of CB’s on and listening as I type this, and these users are often people who have just driven to-from-or in the disaster zones, not just those who saw it on TV. In an emergency, I’m not looking to make friends or talk to my buddies. Within a 5 minute walk I can find a working CB radio owned by a stranger almost anywhere I am located. Right now I could drive a few minutes and put my hand on half a dozen working Cb’s that I had no prior knowledge of. I can’t say this about GMRS, HAM, FRS or the like (and I have all of these). Aside from commercial trucks almost always being equipped with them, the drivers themselves are usually informed of what’s going on long before the internet or TV is. This is hard to match.
When SHTF it won't matter what radio you have running whatever watts on whatever frequency. I will take that 10 watt Retevis all day. Wouxon are garbage. Old business class radios will outlast that cheap Chinese garbage.
