@@justinwitmer1805 I think feel is subjective. I don’t feel like I’m good enough to play blades but everytime I try Wilson, Srixon, and Mizuno they feel fantastic. Of course I wouldn’t play any blade past a 7 iron. 😂
Haywood Golf out of Vancouver is another awesome DTC brand. They mill their blades to a 2% tolerance, which is tighter than industry standards, and you can get a PW-4 set for $799 with your choice of shaft. Got mine a year and a half ago, my distances increased by 15 yards per club and my handicap is down 4.5 strokes. I’m now a 14.5 and love my combo set (blades PW-7, CB’s 6-4). I know I’m not technically “good enough” to play blades but they have absolutely benefited my game; goes to show not every golfer is the same and you should play what makes you happy
The best blade irons are based on the head design profile of the MacGregor MT by MacGregor and the Jack Nicklaus VIP muscle back irons. Examples are the Mizuno TN 87, MP 14, MP29, the Maruman Conductor 31EX, 31CX , the Ben Hogan Apex in it's many iterations since 1990 and many more. Given that the technology has not changed much best advice to an aspiring golfer is to get a set that they like and practice to be good at golf.
How do these new 2024 blades compare to a set of Mizuno Mp-33? I just bought a set of MP-33 for $500. I'd be curious to know if the new blades are much better for the price
I doubt that new could ever be better than MP33’s they’re ultimate classic and a contemporary of my own 2002 Titleist 690MB’s and when I bought them 22 years ago it was a Coin toss to decide which. My son has this new Mizuno blades but he loves borrowing mine for feel.
Holy crap, a 32° 7i ina players iron, lofts have been getting so strong. I remember hearing how my 36°7i sets were strong lofts when I started playing. I’ve always stuck with a 48° pw, 44° 9, 40.5° 8i, 36° 7, 32° 6, etc. but it’s getting harder to find lofts weak enough, thankfully Titleist has stayed with the 47° pw which I bend a degree weak through the years, I also like how it lessens the offset. Ive gamed a set of the Titleist MB for over 20 years now, the 620’s will probably go in the bag soon but I always go back to my trusty 710’s which I’m on my 3rd set of heads 3-pw through the years. liked the 714’s a lot too. They’re all basically the same with minor differences. Some of these irons on here weren’t even really blades also.
@@miguelitoaniceto5882 nice, they used to be 52° then got stronger hence the invention of the 52° gap wedge, soon we’ll need a 5th wedge type, people are already calling 46°-50° “gap wedges when they’re really pitching wedges. I think there should be loft spectrums for each club type personally.
@@PatPenton-fw8bk dang, that’s stronger than my 6i (32°). I’m assuming they’re “game improvement” irons? titleist standard for 7i is 35°, 47° pw, etc . Mine are only 1 degree weak of standard, obviously.
Wow, great to see a DTC brand get that rating. I'm going to check out Takomo the next time I need irons. And I agree with you on the Mizuno's. I have the hot metals and while they do have a soft feel, there is something about the look behind the ball that seems off.
agreed! That Takomo was my best blade of 2023... And that's why it's been in my bag since January 2023! (and will likely stay there for a while). The price obviously doesn't play against it, as well.
Watching Joe the pro is always a pleasure! But watching on a Japanese masterpiece made by Miura or Honma also is - and i missed this pieces in your selection. Do a other video with such traditional forged clubs, maybe with a set of betinardi irons like Freddie Couples tested here on yt....
That's kind Michael! We reached out to Miura but they didn't want to supply samples so couldn't include unfortunately. The Bettinardi blades were released too late for the video unfortunately too. Thanks for watching 👍
@@JoeFerguson-cd4bg it's always a pleasure watching you videos Joe! One thoughtful to the takomos : maybe they are goodness or not, what i hate on business is telling me stories. And they storytelling of cheap takomos is s story and notes much more. Your can get them with a kbs shafted in stuff order regular and standard length and grips. Then the price is 649,-. But that's not what i need and want! For me a DG shaft, 0.5 longer and maybe a cord grip are the tight stuff. Every time normal brand makes this possible for the same price - and takomo? At the end they are nearly at the same time price point, maybe a fraction cheaper. So at the end it's for me a huge story, not more. From the club's you tested i maybes would take a set of wilson staff because of the look and the tradition! But I tell you if you are looking for for ultimative feel, then test a honma blade! If i hit the my 27 ears old 7 iron in the sweet spot it's like a..... A unbelievable feeling it really is! I hope you play soon a round of golf with Dan, Paul and James!! If, i will watch!
Very interesting opinion and data but for me because Mizuno Miura Takomo and others dont do a 3 iron in a set of irons, that iron model would be straight rejected for me. The Wilson wins hands down here cos they do a two iron and three iron. Really surprized the Callaway Apex MB did not even feature. Has to be the best looking mb iron period. So a little surprised by that but purests get put off by new tech in blades. Its all subjective perspective. The Ping is nice but reason I will not play with Ping is their customer service is shocking and they don;t offer the shaft I want as a custom order. I wanted the Blueprint T's in the KBS $ - Taper only to be told by Ping that that is not possible???? For me its between the Wilson and Callaway, although the Cobra features strong here as well as I have hit the cobra and it is a great iron.
Interesting thoughts Michael. It's all subjective I guess. The Apex MB was just to angular at address for my eye, much preferred the CB shaping. Thanks for watching 👍
@@paulmcgee1867 Well there is a way around it. purchase the heads and take them to get fitted. Elite Fit Golf and Club Champion will fit you. IF you know your specs - you cand o some level of customization to match as closest possible to the shaft you play. DTC brands do not focus on fitting a player per say.
There's a reason Takomo doesn't have top line views of any of their irons on the website. All of em are super chunky. A little chamfering and they'd look great. Maybe that finishing process is expensive? I've never seen any in person but all the photos they look unfinished and unrefined.
@@uwrossl Takomo irons don't look unfinished nor unrefined. They actually look very good. Yes the top line is thicker but that doesn't disqualify them from being great looking and good performing irons.
@@xxthadeucexx Good performing agreed as it has no impact on performance...great looking....beg to differ. From a bag appeal standpoint they look fine. Maybe they look different in person but any top view pics you can find online.... they look unrefined and blocky.
@@uwrossl I own a couple of sets and they look good, at least to me they do. Not sure where you get unrefined from unless you mean they don't look like every other blade or the top line isn't razor thin, then I concede.
@@uwrossl I disagree there, obviously! I think they look beautiful in the flesh and the finish is exceptional to my eye at least! And the feel is as good or better than anything else I have tested. It's all subjective though. One mans junk is another mans treasure! Thanks for watching 👍
They provided a great flight window and launch for me. I'm generally a very low spin player so this isn't super low for me personally. Thanks for watching 👍
I wonder if you collected data from hundreds of strikes whether there would really be much if any difference between most forged irons? There is so much bs around golf gear and have forged irons really changed much in a couple of decades? Seems like you could go find anything from years ago for a few hundred dollars and you would be fine, they are fairly affordable actually, probably because so many people bought them and realise they can't use them.
Ping aren’t true blades… neither are Callaway or PXG. IMHO a blade is a single piece of forged metal, w/out game improvement, or feel enhancement tech built into it. I 100% agree with blades needing to evolve to stronger lofts, the courses are getting longer… OEM’s need to adapt.
Lofts don't need to increase, that's a fallacy. If clubs didn't have numbers but just lofts you're point would almost be pointless beyond half inch in club length. If you need a 32 degree club to achieve a certain distance, whether it's got a 6,7 or 8 on the bottom is irrelevant. Spin numbers, moi, launch and forgiveness are far more relevant comparisons.
I can see your point but respectfully disagree. Hopefully there were enough more traditional blades in there for you to look at though. Thanks for watching 👍
Pxg weight in the back is for swing weight. It is a blade. It’s forged multiple times over and milled. Then the weight is for easier fitting for swing weights.
No Maltby? Maltbys are the best irons available hands down. You are stuck on these big names, they are all ripping you the fuxk off. Half the brands you mentioned, suck big time. Get real, sales people suck. Buy direct people,..... Maltby. Available at golf works. The best, hands down. If you don't like them I'll buy them back for 75% of your cost. You won't be disappointed.
They’re pretty nice expect for their lofts are strong af. Even if you bend them 2° weak the PW is still 47°, a fairly standard MB PW loft. I’ve gamed a 48° pw, 44° 9i, etc. forever & don’t want to change, I’d have to bend them 3° degrees weak, then grind the soles to fix the bounce, which would give them next to no offset. They felt pretty good when I hit them though, the top line was kinda thick for me personally was another thing I didn’t like about them, also they’re design just didn’t do it for me, I’d give them a 7/10.
Nope, completely brand agnostic. The blend of looks, feel, performance and incredible price point all combined to make them my favorite. Thanks for watching
