Today in the workshop Ben is in his happy place talking about his favourite tool in the workshop the Radius Master Grinder, these are some of the real workhorses of thew workshop and is this the perfect grinder for you as a new maker? Ben shows some of thew great features on this particular machine and hopefully helps you make a better decision when it comes to purchasing a major bit of kit for the workshop.
Is this the best grinder for knife making? maybe now you will know.

The design of that grinder is absolutely brilliant! I'm used to using a linisher at work, which is essentially the same thing, but for woodwork. But it's just a large vertical platten, with a 90 deg table bolted to it. You can use the drum at the end, but it's about 12" wide, so no good for smaller radiuses. Not to mention the fact that it's in a woodwork shop, so grinding metal on it is not really ideal. I need to get one of those Radiusmasters. Thanks for the heads-up!

The best grinder there is. I would be lost without mine. The speed you can change from one wheel to another makes it dream to use.

Another great informative video you two. That is a ripper machine. Can see why you have four and I reckon you would be lost without them. Hope you are both well. Take care. Regards Andrew 🦘🦘😁👍

Have you considered using a piece of wood with a length of rope attached to one side of it to depress the spring-loaded tensioner when a belt breaks? All you have to do is attach the rope ends to one side of a piece of wood so that it fits reasonably snugly over the contact wheels when the length of wood is facing out, if you rotate the wood in the plane of belt rotation so that the rope is pulled over the end of the wood, the rope will be effectively shortened pulling in the tensioner. All you need to do is have the wood thick enough to depress the tensioner till the lock clicks in. The length of the wood to its thickness determines the leverage you get. if you get it just right, it will roll over the pivot point and lock into place. An old wood workers trick and probably older than that, right up there with the similar Spanish windlass.

Is there a smaller grinder that you would recommend for the hobbyist? More maintaining, renovating and re-profiling blades and scales than up at your level of expertise.

Hello, thanks for the video, I want to ask you if you could remove the drive pulley from the motor and show the switching device itself, which allows you to install the grinder in any position, if it’s not difficult, remove this process
@BenOrford
@BenOrford 2 года назад
Sorry do you mean you want me to remove the drive wheel? It’s a bit tricky to take off but it’s a simple system in there with a spring loaded tooth and slot that it locates in 👍

@@BenOrford Yes, this is exactly what I asked to remove the drive wheel, but if this is not possible in any case, I thank you for a good video, and I wanted to see the switching mechanism of this particular machine for scientific purposes, of course, although radius master has drawings that show everything, but

Do you have to import them from Australia or is there a Uk dealer?
@BenOrford

When I got mine there was a UK dealer bit now you have to get them from abroad. I am trying to see if I can order a few to the Uk for the other makers let me know if this would be of interest cheers Ben

Ben, I know you are discussing the Radius Master Grinder as the best and that belt grinders overall can offer, but I did not hear you discuss why it was better than other models. I haven't heard much about this company, and I am guessing that is in the UK? Anyway I shot a video about 2x72" grinders (at the end) as they seem to be the #1 recommended overall grinder for all jobs in the knife process. I wanted to know if you think the 2x48 is better than 2x72 and why? Is it maybe a higher RPM/SFM or maybe since its got smaller belts the components and accessories are cheaper or last longer? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--W8AyEj7dBc.html
