Yellow and Oxidized Headlight restoration kits tested: Meguiar's, Mothers NuLens, Sylvania, Turtle Wax, Harbor Freight Deluxe Lens Renewal and Visbella DIY Headlight Restoration Kit. Headlight's are typically made of polycarbonate, which is up to 250 times more impact resistant than glass. However, it scratches easily and is very sensitive to UV Exposure. Headlight manufacturers use a protective coating to prevent yellowing and UV damage but headlights still become yellow and oxidized over time, making night time driving difficult. A high quality headlight restoration kit includes not only restores clarity and light output but also includes a UV protectant. I hope you find this video helpful.

@Project Farm believe it or not, Deep Woods Off mosquito spray instantly removes the yellowing oxidation from polycarbonate lenses. I would recommend trying this step first to remove the discoloration then polish and follow up with protective coating. Some window tint shops provide clear protective skin to protect lenses as well. Maybe a combination of these may work better than the old school “Miyagi” methods.

Fun fact: 3M (originally known a Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company) was started to produce sand paper used in the mining process. They (and Eagle Abrasives/Kovax) are pretty much top dog in the the sand paper industry (Eagle Abrasives is the US division of the Japanese company Kovax and they make the K series sandpaper meant for more precise jobs like removing dust nibs from clear coat)

Great head to head competition and was spot on to my experiences with HF, 3M, and the Meguiare's. I tried 4 yrs ago to do Fiances Headlights and the polishing part with 3M was restored to new condition. But none of the 3 had the UV protection liquid so I knew nothing about that step. So in 8mos her Honda's headlights were bad again. GREAT STUFF YOUR DOING FOR THE CONSUMER!!! THANKS

As a professional detailer, I do a ton of headlight restorations, so this was a lot of fun to watch. Sandpaper is definitely a perfect example of getting what you pay for. Just like your battery test, where the cheap batteries were so bad, they ended up being one of the most expensive to use. The time saved alone is worth the extra cost for 3M sandpaper. It not only cuts efficiently, it's very durable, their Trizact pads last *forever* used properly. Big thank you! 👍👌✌

Not the original poster but, I use 3m sandpaper to wetsand the lens, then I use meguiars m105 with a DA. I just use Turtle wax seal n shine as a protectant
@jdisdetermined
@jdisdetermined 4 года назад
@tan j maz similar to above poster, I generally start with 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper by machine, then 2000, and 3000, with a hand block for control, I always sand wet for efficiency. I finish with a rotary polisher, wool pad and compound and polish, but a DA works too, rotary just does the job a bit faster. I seal them with 2k clear coat, or a ceramic coating, depending on the budget.

I can say my experiences with abrasives are similar with woodworking and the occasional metalworking. 3M is a consistent top contender for quality and the rate which you chew through consumables easily pays for itself, even if your time changing them out is not a cost factor. I wouldn't be surprised if that Sylvania kit outsourced the abrasives to 3m or SIA and won this competition thanks to the protective coating filling most of the scratches.

@@ProjectFarm Yes, 3M has a "Heavy Duty" Restoration kit that comes with a pad and 3 types of sandpaper for a drill, no polishing or finishing compound, but instead some wipes that apply a UV coating (2x to each headlight). Very happy with the results I got from this kit for my car. I apply some Mother's California Gold Carnuba wax to my headlights after every car wash now and the UV coating is holding up very well.

Hey get a kit that has the three different grits of sandpaper and the polish/clarifying compound. Once you're done it's really important to apply the lens protectant that meguiars makes. Otherwise, they'll be yellow again in a month.
@ncc74656m
@ncc74656m 4 года назад
I had an excellent experience with the 3M kit, and highly recommend it. Once you finish the full polishing though, I would recommend getting an acrylic clear coat with high UV additive spray paint to go over them (unless you can get a 2k clear coat with UV protectant for a reasonable price in your area) before applying any chemical protectant over the top of all of it. It'll give your lenses the best fighting chance. If you hope to keep the car for a long time without repeating it, you should also look into a clear overlay for them like a clearbra or something to help absorb future rock damage.

Tbh testing the kits on actual headlights would have been a much more accurate comparison to what you should expect on your own car, naturally hazed by nature. On actual headlights that have hazed like crazy, by natural means, the turtle wax kit would have not end up last. Maybe closer to first. Always aim for real world application to get the best comparison.

Thanks for including instructions while doing the product comparison testing. A mechanic at the local Toyota dealer personally recommended the 3M kit. Considering that nearly everything takes longer to do as a older woman with severe asthma, I was able to restore both headlights on our 2011 Camry in about 2 hours using the 3M kit with my cordless drill and applying 2 coats of Meguiers clear UV protectant spray. 😀 There's even plenty of kit left to do the headlights again. Hubby is quite impressed with the results as the headlights look like new - which makes the old, chipped paint look more sad now Lol😆 Still, we saved a lot of $$ and if I can successfully use this with kit no previous experience, almost anyone else can too! 👍

Sometimes the best way to do something is to just do it and get it over with. It should be obvious what to do with the kit without instructions. Use the lowest grit sandpaper with water, and ascend in grit count until you can't go any higher, then polish with included compound. It's pretty universal. I use UV resistant, non-yellowing spraycan clearcoat and polish it afterward to protect it.

Project Farm has no such brand snobbery; the highest priced and lowest priced are pitted against each other and if there's any "bias" I'm not noticing it. PF offers an even playing field where they either succeed or fail. With Wrang it was just him declaring which he liked the best and spending the rest of the video bashing/talking shit about the "cheap knock-off". PF is superior in every way.

I've tried most of these and I'm so glad someone finally did a comprehensive review of a large selection. I've found mixing different products have given the best results. However I'll have to try Sylvania now. Thank-you

Glad to hear one of the kits that doesn't require a drill turned out to be the best. I don't have a drill, so it's nice to know I'm not gated out of restoring my headlights.

Based on this review I used the Sylvania kit on my 11-year-old Ridgeline and they came out crystal clear. Thanks for what you do!

Sylvania’s clear coat has been my little secret. They sell it separately for $10. I use 3M 400, 1000, and 2000 grit sandpaper and then the Sylvania Clear coat for best results. No polishing compound, the sylvania clear coat takes care of that.

Great feedback! There's enough to coat 6-8 headlights

The Sylvania clear coat was coming off of my headlight lenses in the middle after a few months. I re-sanded them and bought a nice spray can of Rustoleum UV protective plastic bonding clear coat and that has held up. Probably less than $10 a can in the states and would do dozens of headlight lenses.

I was actually going to say this exact thing. Did it to my headlights thst were completely fogged over. Has lasted 3 years now. Still going strong.

My secret is Turtle Wax cutting compound and rubbing compound. If your lights aren't horrible, you can skip any sand paper altogether. Cutting compound serves the role of the medium-course papers, and rubbing compound serves as the fine paper and polish. For $6 per bottle at Walmart, I get enough compound to do dozens of headlights. With a drill attachment, I can restore a headlight in two minutes.

Another great video. I need to do this to my headlights and wasn’t sure which kit was the best. Now I know. Your videos have been very helpful for various projects I’ve had to do. You’re my go to guy. Thanks.

Thanks for the video! I went with the Sylvania on a 2012 Galant. The lenses were not yellowed but they were very cloudy and had a crusty distortion that would not wash off all over them. The wife and I each took a headlight. We got a couple stools to sit on and got to sanding, passing the spray bottle back and forth. We did not use the 400 grit because I didn't think the headlights were bad enough to needed it. And as it turns out they didn't. The headlights look brand new! BEAUTIFUL! Thanks again.👏
