I Bought EVERY Headlight Restoration Kit At O'Reillys *And Tested Them*

Headlight restoration is a huge deal these days. After cars switched to plastic headlight lenses we had to find ways to fix them when the UV coatings degrade and the plastic itself starts to break down. The plastic yellows or becomes hazy, reducing the light output and making the car look much worse. Now it seems like everyone makes a kit to fix them. Since I had 6 trashed headlights in the shop that needed fixed, I decided to buy every kit I could at O'Reillys and put them to the test.

As an employee of O'reillys I always recommended the turtle wax headlight restore kit, have tried others as well but nothing beats turtle wax, thanks for confirming my opinion. Also the recent hires at most stores don't know the difference between a spark plug and a gas cap... just saying... They don't pay enough to hire true mechanics like me, but I am retired and do it for fun and a few extra bucks mostly.

I have a friend with a 2002 grand am, the head lights were so yellow you could not see the bulbs. I watched the video and went to O'reillys and bought the turtle wax kit. I had my doubts it would clean as well as the video but...OMG, they look like brand new. Thank you for your work on the video, I could have spent a lot of money on the wrong products .

@@soap38 Try the Meguiar's kit. The end results (for me) weren't quite AS good as the Turtle Wax, but the lights stayed clear for months. Of course, NONE of these products are a permanent solution and the lights will always haze over again a few months down the road. The only way to permanently fix hazy lights is to replace the lens. If only automakers made these lenses out of glass instead of plastic, we wouldn't have this problem.

Awesome awesome AWESOME-ER! Being a retired mobile detailer (4 spine surgeries in 4 years) as you can probably tell by looking behind me at my polishing pads in my profile pic, I love seeing these reviews. I use to do a ton of reviews for Autogeek back in the early 2000's...I drove a yellow Ranger....and genuinely loved being surprised by the underdog product! As I was watching you, JRGo, use it, I could tell it was doing something special. I think honestly, because you didn't use a machine. With plastic, I think hand sanding is needed. Maybe the machine is making to much heat or can't contour enough, but the hand is better. A DA is better than a drill 100%!!!! I wish you would try it with a 3in pad and plate. Remember, with a DA you get more cut with a smaller pad as well. Once again thank for the time you both spent doing this!!!!

I have been using PlastX by McGuire's for the last 20 years. I started on a 92 Crown Victoria that I thought needed new headlamps. Using the cream and blue paper shop towels, the lights came up almost like new in under half an hour with no tools. I've been using it ever since on Arthur, my 1990 Volvo 240 wagon. Twice a year and the lights do come out looking like brand new. Only takes about 10 minutes to do both lights. Arthur is still wearing his original 31 year old headlamps, and they are hard to distinguish from new headlamps.

interesting results! I used the Turtle Wax hand-sanding kit for years and then awhile back switched to the 3M with the drill sanding pads. they both work great but I'm too lazy to do all that hand-sanding with the Turtle Wax kit these days. I am definitely impressed with how well the RainX restorer worked though! for headlights that aren't too far gone, I've found Meguiar's PlastX with a foam drill polishing pad also works very very well for a quick restore. but the kits with multiple & progressively finer sanding pads/discs (and sealant) will always give the best results. the only caveat is you have to be careful with the drill-based kits - if you use too high a speed/too much pressure while sanding, you can actually burn swirl marks deep into the plastic surface of the headlight and those are a real son of a biscuit to buff out. ask me how I know 😬

Used the Turtle Wax one myself about 7 years ago on my truck - was blown away at how good it was. The protectant held up well too - didn't fade in the year left that I had it before getting another vehicle. For upkeep and general polishing, Meguiar's PlastX is *really* good - it is a mild polish as well as a chemical deoxidizer it can turn a set around in a couple minutes, like the RainX one, _but_ .... you have to apply some sort of UV protectant or they'll just start yellowing again. The UV protectant/sealant is the one critical thing in the long run if the headlights are to _stay_ looking good. That or the government allowing glass headlights again. ;)
@Lili-xq9sn
@Lili-xq9sn 11 месяцев назад
What uv protector do you use???? For instant clarity, I just use acetone nail polish remover. Makes them crystal clear in one pass. Don't make more than one pass...additional passes cause the fog again. Don't get it on the paint.
@Dakiraun
@Dakiraun 11 месяцев назад
@@Lili-xq9sn I haven't found one that lasts all that long yet. I tried waxes (normal and ceramic) that supposedly have UV protection, but best they'll do is maybe 3 months. Tried Meguiar's "Keep Clear" headlight coating, which is a clear coat paint, and that works for a lot longer. I find it's very soft though and doesn't dry as smooth as normal clear coats. A light buffing after applying it smoothes it out. Depending on exposure, the Meguiar's can hold up 6 to 12 months. I don't think one can do much better than that since any coating you put on is going to be a sub-millimeter thick thing, and the sun will easily break it down. Just have to keep re-doing the lights every so many months.

One tip on the old fashioned sanding kits. Park it outside, and put the garden hose on fast drip, sitting on top, dripping down the face, and then you can sand away. The continuous water keeps you from burning the lens and keeps the paper from loading up. Used the sanding disk kits for a long time, but that RainX kit will be my next purchase.

Yep this is all I use anymore and I use it on every headlight i see! 🙈 De-oxidize (I use rubbing compound), 2000 grit hand pass, 3000 grit, then clean. Cerakote wipe simple and not too messy, some practice necessary... Lasts longer and looks better than any other kits I've used!

Just used the TurtleWax on a 15 year old Saturn Vue..looks almost new. There is something about that spray lube that makes the sanding both easy and crystal clear. Sand first..then use the polish. Their directions are kind of backwards. They don't give you enough sealant for multiple cars so I purchased a bottle of "sealant only" so I could use up all of the other kit. Throw in some LED bulbs and you will have an incredible upgraded night driving experience.

I found for me the best outcome was sanding. Wet sand from 800-1000, then 1500 then 2000. Good coat wax after, headlights still look good after 1 year.

I used the 3M ultra on a 9 year old Mazda 3 with projector headlights. Before the restoration there was no defined beam cut-off that you normally have with projector beam lights. I used plastx polish and it didn't do much. It cleaned them up some but still had a terrible scattered beam pattern. Somehow the algorithm gods brought this video to me and I watched it and thought let's try turtle wax or 3M. Man it did not disappoint. If you look really close you can still see some faint scratches but from 5 feet away they look almost new. I am a quality inspector so most people probably wouldn't see the faint scratches. Dope product, next time I'll try the turtle wax on my old E46 headlights.

13:50 The 3M ultra kit is what we use at work not to rag you guys but that was nowhere near the correct use of the product it is meant for professionals. A proper restoration is 25-30 minutes per headlight the 500 grit is dry sand only you make a general pass of the headlight. You wipe it down with a dry cloth and look for high spots and differences in the color/shade knock it all down. Once it's even you wash it down then move on to the wet sanding same process as before. The Trizact gets shared for both headlights so I do the dry 500 and wet 800 on both sides before moving onto the final stage. There are two wipes in that kit you DO NOT rub them in a circular motion or back and forth pick a direction and maintain it across the entire headlight otherwise it streaks and runs like heavy paint or lacquer instead it's done in slight overlapping passes. Both wipes get used on each headlight let dry for 5-15 minutes then open second wipe use on both headlights dries in 20 ish minutes but fully cures in 24-48 hours so absolutely no exposure to rain or water from the road in that time frame it will ruin the curring process. I've restored moderately to heavily yellowed headlights to mirror finish nearly factory look with that kit and I highly recommend an air tool the consistent speed is crucial electric drills have too much torque they tend to skip/buck your hand and the sanding pad scuffs/burns the lens. The only thing you can't fix is lens "crazing" that's internal micro-cracking from heat and pressure you'll never sand or polish that out.

I've only used Turtlewax since these head light cleaners became a thing. Always pleased with the results and never once felt the need to use the sanding pads included in each box. I will say that I learned to put a protective coating to preserve the look and found that NuFinish polish lasted best at about 12 months. My next box will come with a protectant which I'll try. Nice video guys...best I've seen on these products.

The best headlight restoration kit is the Sylvania one hands down. The other ones don’t even come REMOTELY close. I’ve used the Sylvania one on headlights that were extremely extremely pitted and yellow and discolored and it literally makes it look like an absolute 10/10 brand new headlight. The lense is 100% clear and you can’t see any imperfections at all from any angle. It almost makes it look like the lense isn’t even there. I just used the meguiars and the turtle wax one and they were like a 6.5/10 compared to Sylvania. They made the lense clean and white, and definitely more clear, but they leave a haze on it and lots of imperfections. The Sylvania one comes with a wipe on clear coat, it’s different then a “clarifying wipe”. It literally makes it look perfect. The two main important things are the quality of the sandpaper, and it has to have a clear coat. The Sylvania one also comes with a spray that you put on first that washes off the yellow grime, then you use the rubbing compound with sandpaper, then you use the clear coat. It will look like crap when your all done, but then you wipe the clear coat on it and it magically looks perfect.

Great job guys!! I have been servicing and detailing cars for over 50 years, and overall, have ALWAYS found turtle wax products (of every kind) to hold their own against all challengers, even ones that cost many times more. One thing I might add (and it's just from my personal experience) is that no product out there offers really long term UV protection. We live in a world where all headlights are now plastic, and plastic WILL fog and have to be periodically cleaned and polished (and eventually replaced). That's why I no longer waste time "coating, sealing, etc." with expensive "uv protectors." If such were possible, the folks who make the plastic headlights would do it at the factory-- and we would never even have to have this discussion. Good luck with your business !
@Lili-xq9sn
@Lili-xq9sn 11 месяцев назад
That's what I thought about uv protection. For instant clarity, I just use acetone nail polish remover. Makes them crystal clear in one pass. Don't make more than one pass...additional passes cause the fog again. Don't get it on the paint.

@@Lili-xq9sn Perhaps that was it. My car was mostly parked outside, but under a tree, so I'm sure it got plenty of shade and for 9 years it was parked in a parking garage, mostly under the shade - but not always. Maybe I got a good year's batch of headlights. Everything else I had to repair, cost me so much. I probably should have thrown in the towel and gotten a new car, but I am retired and don't drive much and did not want to spend 30,000 to 50,000 on a new car.
