I also own these headphones. Very nice review here. I will add my thoughts for those interested. I do not find the bass to be muddy. They do improve after 100 hour break in. I do not find them to be super comfortable, but they are not too bad either. The ear cups are not quite deep enough for me. My ears touch the inner mesh a bit. I have compared these to other headphones such as V-Moda M100, Senn Momentum, ATH-M50. These all retail for over $200. For sound quality, I prefer the Superlux HD681 EVO. Not bad at all for $40
I've use these for close to a year now and I'm pretty happy with them. I have no problems with the sound quality. They sound great to my mind. Good for gaming too. They are fairly comfortable too. I sometimes wear glasses when in front of the computer and with the glasses on they get uncomfortable after a couple of hours. But honestly I have yet to find a headphone that doesn't get slightly uncomfortable when wearing glasses. They certainly have a pretty cheap feel to them, though. So that's something that you're giving up for that low price. I should also mention that the right cup stopped working on mine some couple of weeks ago. One of the wires had to be resoldered and the warranty covered it. I don't imagine it would cost too much if they were out of warranty.
Dude ik this has nothing to do with the video but I saw a couple of your 2k videos and you hilarious your not trying to copy other comentators your just being yourself I'm totally subscribing
Think im sold. this review was everything i was looking for, now to buy an Antlion 4.0 modmic and im set. No more cheap and very well used Philips SHP2000 with muddled EQ. im sold. Thanks for the video very helpfull :)
Flat can be also used to describe dynamics of a headphone. Flat frequency response is usually a good thing for audio electronics, because what comes in also comes out, but sometimes on headphones a flat sound is a boring sound, without dynamics, that sounds very monotonous and lacks excitement. For music listening on headphones flat is not ideal. For mixing, mastering, studio work, etc. yes, flat is good, but for enjoying music, it's usually not. That's because you percieve sound from headphones much differently than when listening to speakers in a room. Good flat speakers in a proper room will sound great, they will have plenty of bass, nice even response, etc. But flat headphones will usually sound very bass light and bright. It's just better to go for the sound signature you like that works best with music you listen to, and stop obssesing with perfectly flat and accurate sound, because you'll never gonna get that anyway. After all, best sounding and most expensive audiophile headphones that really sound special and VERY realistic and natural when you listen to them have far from flat frequency responses.
RageElixir I just got mine and they seems quite sturdy despite being made of plastic. I'm aware this response may not exactly be time-effective :P, but maybe it'll help someone who's wondering the same thing you were.
Shadow Yep the earpads are comfortable. They come with extra velour pads if you dont like the pleather. Im using the velour and its comfortable to wear.
how is your EVO holding up? any issues that occur with it? are they still alive? I wanted to know if they have any build problems and if they are durable...
Everything is still in great condition, bass is much better after break-in, and the color still seems to be as white as the beginning, cant tell though, i have horrible tungsten lighting in my room -_-
What I encountered is that either I'm a mindless brute, or the flexband has a weak spot. I managed to tear it while placing over my head, right where the band retracts inside the headphone casing.
+John Paul Natividad Ive had two pairs the 681 evo and the gaming 681 hmc evo... the normal 681 evo had a cable problem but the 2nd pair.... still working fine after 100% volume all the time etc.. i even snapped the mic off by accident and have thrown them across the room because of cs go... they still sound fine...
+Spoert M I´ve used 668b for over five years now. It´s turned out to be really durable product despite being cheap. The design is just solid and drivers are good. I´ve dropped it on hard floor multiple times and still no problems. Only thing that is starting to wear out is cable surface, because I use my headphones for 2-8 hours every single day. But that´s not really a problem, since new cables can be had for cheap. I´m been wanting to buy a pair of 681 EVO:s to test myself, but since 668b:s keep on working I haven´t had any excuse to do so. One thing that sometimes gets mentioned is that few people have (apparently) snapped the headband on their 681 EVO:s, which is pretty much impossible to do with 668b, as the twin steel wires on headband and pressure adjustment wings are pretty much immune to any damage that doesn´t involve gorilla jumping on top of them. :)
+No Way Thanks. Why didn’t you go with a closed one like 662 or 669? I don’t know whether to chose closed semi or open. Might take it to the subway or to the office. Metal is not for everyone, you know : )
I have seen so many people say that the 668b is crazy on the treble though.. ive been looking at the EVO and the Philips SHP9500 , i read that a lot of people say the philips are the best for the price range, but ive also seen good about the evo.. the only headset i have and have ever owned is a turtle beach p11 so im sure both would be a lot better than that, but the p11's are closed when these are both open. The strap on the EVOs worries me as well which makes me feel like siding with the philips a bit more, i really don't know though.. I have also seen so many people say that the 668 is the best for music/gaming.. Anyone have any advice? I really need some help lol
never had a chance to test for hd 681evo. but for 668b i've been used for more than 5years, it good but lack of bass(i'm a basshead) i love my previous senn hd202 better because of the bass. Probably this evo have more bass for me.
Great review! You practically showed every detail i'd be interested in. Have the Superlux HD 681 Standard ones (should be more or less the same). < And just as you said great for gaming, music and general purposes @ home.
I have these and the bass is awesome on them. But that is according to my ears. I also have the Phillips SHP9500 and yes the bass on those is very underwhelming, though it is a great headphone. Other phones that I have are ATH-M50x, Sennheiser HD598. I use the Evo's for gaming because they sound crisp and have great BOOM bass... also of course these are not super bass but compared to all my other headphones they have a awesome funky bass sound to them and great mids and highs as well. They also complement bass and drums on songs like early Rush etc.
im trying to pick either the EVO or the Philips SHP9500 , i read that a lot of people say the philips are the best for the price range, but ive also seen good about the evo.. the only thing that truly worries me about the philips is how open it is, the only headset i have and have ever owned is a turtle beach p11 so im sure both would be a lot better than that, but the p11's are closed when these are both open
Yes the Phillips is open while the Superlux is semi-open. And of all my headphones the Phillips has the most sound bleed so that even my family in the next room thinks that I am listening to speakers instead of cans. Lol. Another thing to consider is price, the EVO are more affordable and also if the volume is cranked high they have no bass distortion, I notice that on my Phillips if the volume and bass are too hi they will distort and clip a bit.
+PassiveDisplay they are fine so far. I even modified the headband pad... with my junked turtle Beach pad!!!lol. search on headfi . org and you will find my post on the thread for these EVO s. and yes the SHiPs LEAK a lot of sound.
Robert Martinez I ordered the EVOs and they just came in the mail the pther day, they are amazing so far, i put the velour pads on them to make them more comfortable. They sound so much better than my turtle beach p11's haha
I used theese for music production, sound is actually good, the bass is not as prominent tho, so you will need to reference bass on a different speakers/headphones. Be careful with the 3,5mm jack that sticks out of headphones, it's really easy to break it.
Please i need an answer as soon as possible! I have to choose between HD681 EVO to HD668B. Yes I know I am not the first one to ask but here is what important to me: Crystal clear sound, sharp sound for the musical instruments and details you usually not hearing when listening in general. So i care less about the bass although it will still be nice to have it as well. What should i choose between the 2 then? Any help will be really appreciated!
It depends on how you computer soundboard is taking care of it, some can't handle them in the right way. Test it on your Smartphone, you'll be able to see if it's your motherboards fault. In the worst case you'll need to buy a better sound board to run it well.
If you aren't blasting music through them--just having a Skype conversation or whatever at normal volumes--will a standalone mic pick up the audio going through the headphones?
+VikingLoyalty No. HD681: www.amazon.com/Superlux-681-Dynamic-Semi-Open-Headphones/dp/B002GHIPYI%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ3NOW7JKGQLTEY4A%26tag%3Dcnet-api-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB002GHIPYI HD681 EVO: www.amazon.com/Superlux-HD681EVO-B-HD-681-Black/dp/B00CAG1ZAQ I would assume they use the same drivers, though.
Hey nice Review :) I have a Question please. Is the Superlux HD681 Evo good for Gaming and Music ? Which Colour is better for u White or Black? And how is the Comfort ? I wear glasses and have a big head. What is better for u Superlux HD681 Evo or Plantronics Gamecom 388 Headset ? Please answer me back its very important for me ?
Hey I was thinking of getting a headset for gaming, I'm not too sure which headphones to buy though. I'm stuck with two, the Status or the Superlux 681HD. I will be getting the mod mic either way but I would like to hear some opinions
Why didn't you do the sound leakage test with the headphones on your head? Would have been better to do it like that so it is an actual representation of what the leakage will be like when in use, also would have been good if you muted the music for that part of the video too.
I just ordered some HD 682 Evo yesterday, And i guess something I missed is that they do not have manual adjustable head band (just like HD 681 Evo) My question is, A lot of the time I have them around my neck (whlile traveling if i have to take them off my ear). Currently for my Creative Aurvana Live, I have to extend the head rest all the way so they fit comfirtably around my neck. What about These. If you just drop them and let them hang around yoru neck, is it comfritable ?
Semiopen sounds nice to me. As I am looking for a nice fresh sound but also some air for my ears. On the other hand some more closed sound to the outside. But in your test I think I am not allowed to listen with them in the office or on the subway cause I get distract other people. What’s your opnion on that? Thanks for the video anway!
I've got these headphones, and the low end doesn't translate very well, its always too loud...mids and highs sounded fine though. Also, they have too much clamping force at first, but this can easily be remedied. Definitely not better than £300 headphones, but not bad for £35 though.
Got these because of this video back in 2014 and had them ever since, The band is cacked and I have to find some way to fix it or make my own but the sound is great!
Would the audio technica m50x be a good upgrade from these? Judging from reviews, the main upgrade seems to be better quality plastic. Is it worth the 120$ more...
In terms of build quality and comfort, yes. In terms of sound, no, not really. In fact, M50's don't sound better at all. They have a smaller soundstage, worse imaging, less detail, more colored sound, not as natural midrange, boomier bass, etc. It's more about preference than actual better or worse, but I don't think M50's will be any better, at least not from my experience.
derbigpr500 Hey you seem to know a lot about headphones so can you tell me what's the difference between superlux hd681 and hd668 because I would like to get them but I don't knwo wich one would be better for gaming and sound overall. and also wich has better bass
Anyone here has bought this product and have a problem with one of the headphones going bad? Any idea how to fix it? I opened it but the cables are still intact. It is the side with the cable extension that is giving trouble (left side).
Can someone help me pick which headphones to buy? I want $50 headphones and I found about these headphones and the 668B and I'm not sure which on is better. I'm not the type of guy that knows a lot about headphones, but I heard that these are really good. I'm thinking about getting the 668Bs but I'm still not sure. What are the Pros and Cons pf both headphones? Also is you know better headphones let me know about them please, thanks!
to anyone who owns the 681 EVO white... does the white discolor and become yellowish overtime? please indicate how long you have the headphones, thanks.
Mine are still perfectly white. I own them for like a yeah now I think but I'm not quite sure. I can only recommend these Headphones. Especially to audiophiles.
Miss Nina thanks, I already bought the evo white last Jan2015, it sounds great and no signs of yellowing. Great Headphones. I use it on mainly on 80% music listening and 20% gaming. I'm really glad I bought them.
i like their very bright/detailed and clear sound signature compared to darker sounding Superlux HD 681 Evo's which hp's i'll use depends on my mood and music i'm listening to... i like them both :D
***** It's good to hear that you like both. I'll likely order the evo out of the two. And strictly use it for gaming - shooting games where having delicious bass adds to the roar of explosions =-)
Anybody can suggest a good pair of headphones to just plug my guitar in a audio interface and play along? I just want it to be accurate enough so that I know what I play through the amp simulation is what I hear. No headphone alterations of the sound. So are these good for this kind of thing?
MrCatfail You sure? lacking bass impact doesn't mean it has good bass, and this was reviewed prior to an in-house update to the 681 EVO's. My copy is very bassy.
Gary Oak really? I don't really feel that much bass in my 681 evo, but I've also not tried the 668b so I can't compare. honestly I think I might have been thinking about the 681, not the 668b, with regards to bass
@@martbell1493 how is it? Currently I using the 668b . I have broken in the sound and The sound is amazing. Comfortwise the stock earpad is ok quite comfortable after long time use it soften up. But can't wear for too long because it hurt my right ear as the earpad touch my ears
+Sasko Anastasov they have good mic quality all my friends said when i joined ts3 why is your mic so good... sounds better then all my friends mics... even Siberia v2's mic...
It's been the same since you saw it last lol, will be adding some things over the summer, expect a new dorm setup around september, followed by my home room maybe October. I've got some good stuff planned
Ok great i was wondering because im moving into a dorm tommorrow and i need ideas your videos are amazing by the way , do you have a job other than youtube ?
I've watch movies with these on and they even vibrate every time there is a buahhhhhhhhhhhh. They do sound muddy when compared with other headphones like my akg 553
+Lazy Lazi You will have tremendous improvement on comfort if you change your 668b to 681evo. But sound quality, no. They are in the same level, just have diffrent sound signature.
I think 681 evo got a warmer sound and better earpads (wich i changed on my superlux 668b), in my opinion for music they are less boring than 668b and are better for rock and metal music but my 668b are better on classical guitars and jazz stuff. Another thing: 668b needs amplifier to sound good and 681 evo don't need one
on Evo's if u use velour earpads and remove felt and foam in front of the driver, leaving nothing there then these sound similar like HD668B's but with slightly more bass
+Burban_Gaming Many have recommended the 668B's because the have more soundstage. The look of the 681 EVO is better though. I'd go with the better soundstage just because it sounds better when gaming.
+Spoert M So how did your new headphones perform then? I might order 668B and 669 to see what fits my needs best. But there are also 662 and 662 Evo. Damn. The marketing should go for: Superlux Bassgaming, Superlux Cleargaming, Superlux Audioclean, Superlux Basssound. As +randomfrankp says, it’s a matter of choice. I still don’t know whether to chose closed, open or semiopen. That’s my problem
niasboiii I'm sorry to tell you but I still haven't bought anything (yet). I'm dead sure though that if you *purely* want to game, then the 668b's are for you. The 681 evo's are more for music and comfort. I've also changed my mind since that comment and if I'm ever going to buy a pair of headphones, it's going to be the Takstar hi2050's. They're supposedly so much more comfortable and sound better. Sure, they might not have the exaggerated soundstage of the 668b's but I don't care that much since I prefer comfort over soundstage.
+Spoert M Very nice. 80 Dollars, right? It’s above my budget, sadly. I will keep gathering information the next months for any Superlux. I tend to go for closed headphones even if the sound is not that good (source: some youtubers). 662 or 669.
TLDR; Superlux are amazing headphones. Don't EVER buy steelseries products cause in less than a year, you'll be hearing just from one side. Also, inside the package you get very nice stuff like soft fabric ear pads (which I always use)
Yeah, my last headset was a Siberia v2, and it started to sound like shit because of the cable. I tried replacing the cable, but I couldn't get it to work (I wasted hours and hours soldering and buying everything). I'm now about to get the Superlux HD 330 because I can't find the HD 681 EVO in my country. I can get the HD 681, but I've heard that the stock earpads are insanely uncomfortable, and I don't have access to spare earpads. What do you think of the HD 330?
Mine are the HD681 EVO, still the best I ever tried. Both sound and quality are the same as a 200€ headphones. About the HD 330, I can't tell if the build quality is the same as my pair, but the sound is surely amazing.
Amethyst Excellent. Isn't it amazing that we get so much quality out of low prices with this brand? My instincts tell me that there must be a drawback :P
I have the 681 evo for almost 8 yrs now and still working. I removed the inner felt but not the pads. I use them for music and movies on pc. I'm still happy/satisfied with their sound quality (with Eq tweaks) and I'm picky.
No, they are headphones, not a headset. Go buy a microphone for 5 Dollars and you have a gaming headset, which is far ahead of all this speedlink medusa or razer kraken nonsense.
Puala Daen Same...I just ordered the evo after reading everyone say it sounded better than the 668B. At least, they said the 668B sounded more "plain" and not as warm. Anyway, how are you liking your evo's now that it's been a couple months?
Belrus - UHC montages! stereo is just have left and right audio, 7.1 is virtual surround sound, meaning they seperate the sound tracks so it sounds like sound is coming from 7 different directions (surround sound)
Because stereo is better for positional audio (enemy footsteps, true sounding) as opposed to virtual 7.1. 7.1 loses a lot of levels and true sound quality, it loses mids to make things sound father away and such.
The sound is good, but the cable connection is very bad. Unusual and strange plug and potential problem. Mine left side dead after one month. I suspect the plug. Do not very optimistic about this headphone.
Wtf is the point of breakaway cord when its attached by a thin wire half the size of a toothpick? Might as well not had it all and let them yank off your head and fall on the ground. Hope your breakaway wire doesnt break like mine! Lol
It is weird why they chose that instead of a female jack like every other headphone manufacturer does, or even keep the male plug but without the wire, bizarre. Might be the only case that an attached cable is better than this?
HI i play fps games and listen to dubstep or electro musics so which one should i get Superlux 688 or 681 evo ?i really need to know because its considered quite cheap in my country for the sound quality 100+ Please reply anyone
+AcheTCK the thing is that they are all like 60 ohm and the ts 671 more than 100 !! these are 32 ohm and are better for "the normal people" that dont have a pre-amp.
