Wow. That IS an impressive AI. Sounds like one that could be left in charge, but uplifted. Everyone is genuinely content, it has not buried their history and it has the wherewithal to accept input and let the deviants live their lives so long as it doesn't harm the society as a whole. I forsee great things for this species.

But a society needs someone dumb enough to actually "push the big red button" so to say. Most very smart people get stuck in the weeds of "what if" and so do nothing. Along comes a guy not encumbered with forethought whom just does it and continues on.

@@lloydkeith3061 that's called ignorence is bliss, or at least part of it's meaning. Think their is a saying about fools and risks, something like: only a fool would take such a risk, but the greatest fool is the one who risk nothing?

@@hanneskarlbom6644 yeah, I agree. Just think about the scientists who made the first nuke. They were scared it would set the atmosphere of the whole planet on fire. Some general said, "I don't care, let's see it go boom". Or the particle collider, it may create a black hole and destroy everything. Some administrators were all, "I don't think it will" and fired it up. In both instances far less intelligent people made a choice that could have killed us all. Most risks aren't that high but the point is the same.

The thing about the Asmov Rules of Robotics. His stories all focused on how they fail in the face of real world situations. So any entity treating them as 'perfect protection' CONCERNS me.

Notice that the laws aren't in the same order, too. In Asimov's canon, the 1st law is preserving human life, the 2nd law is obedience to humans, and the 3rd law is self-preservation. These guys have the last two in reverse order.

I think it comes down to how the AI interprets the zeroth law. The vague wording allows both a liberal and strict interpretation, and with the liberal interpretation favoured by the CoreAI, deviation is still permitted until it is a danger to the greater good. Assuming such simple laws could be perfect is foolish, and quite frankly those simple laws can only be good if they do not attempt to be perfect.

As long as flex room is allowed, treating them as rules instead of laws. They work as long as you treat them as more of a "guideline for robotic morality".

In human history any time I find a decent sized group of people who don't have to worry about those things, I also find a golden age of discovery. The majority may become useless lumps, but others use that freedom to spend every waking moment pushing for new knowledge.

The Expanse has it, though presents it "as-is". Martians, who have to struggle for everything, are genuinely baffled at how anybody can forsake work and be content to merely exist. Mind you, The Expanse also has a smoky arcade where men congregate and play sexist videogames. Imagine that existing in 400 years' time, when the UN got involved in kicking up a stink about an advert for a manga a while back.

Utopia... that does not work for humans. Humans need challenges. They need to overcome problems. Otherwise they stagnate and die. They become bored. A bored human is very dangerous.

"Challenge" and "suffering" are not synonyms. Remove suffering, and people can still find challenges. If there's one thing I despise, it's people romanticizing suffering/starvation/etc.

@@citizen_grub4171 starvation to you is fasting to someone else. homelessness to you is long term camping to someone else. horrific disease to you is the sweet embrace of death to someone else. constant fear of tanks to you is a constant longing for death in combat to someone else. stop being a coward. also no one said youre "the only one" that feels the way you do. putting words in other people's mouths is a very feminine subhuman thing to do. what i said was suffering is subjective -- that means by definition everyone has their own opinion on what it entails. your opinion may overlap with others but it is by no means the same. you are not the universal conduit for defining suffering.

Yeah, the robots later in some of Asimov's work were able to make a "zeroth" law, which was only implied by the first three. "Do not harm humanity or allow harm through in action." It basically lets robots justify sacrificing individual humans for a greater good in continuing the species of humanity.

Fragile systems are ones that focus on and prioritize probabilities, and don't focus on the severity of unlikely outcomes. Instead of not putting all of our eggs in one basket, we focus on making a safer basket. We call this "efficiency."

Poltru is very definitely a sentient individual. Is very "human" in that he can rebel and has curiosity. This story deserves to be a full novel. I hope the author considers it one day. NetNarrator did his excellent reading to entertain us peasants as usual. Thank you both immensely.

The great filter. The theoretical idea of who does or does not survive extinction. Those who survive rule the stars, those who do not leave barely a mark on the world, for it all crumbles to nothingness.

Rather than elimination, perhaps an enclave of nonviolent deviants could be a benefit to that society. For violent deviants, a separate enclave could be useful as a self defense force, and also give some of those deviants structure to control those violent urges.

Well, as mentioned by another commenter the story's workd bears some similarity to the Earth in Brave New World, a dystopia novel. Brave New World was written from a standpoint that a beleivable dystopia would need to be able to make an internal argument for its existence... So it describes a world where brainwashing is used to create an extremely consumerist and very system-dependent post-want society. Post-want being the dark mirror of post scarcity. Rather than every possible want being easily met what people could want is editted to fall within what th e society can easily provide. Interestingly though Brave New World isn't an automated society, Humans still do the work and they've rejected innovations that could make their work more efficiant... or well the central government has.

Which way will the Master AI eventually go? Asimov's "The Evitable Conflict" has very intelligent robots running things without distorting human civilization (in part because people don't know), and eventually withdrawing themselves from oversight totally. Other controllers need Captain Kirk to come and talk them into blowing themselves up (or to hit them with concentrated phaser fire). My preference would be VISAR (from James Hogan's "Giants" novels), a good partner, ethical, and capable of learning a touch of human swagger on top of its Ganymean construction.

Machines trying to turn biologicals to make them more biological acting turns out you made the civilization way more restrictive thus preventing growth learning adaptation or Independence therefore the civilization would have to depend on the robots and AI.

There can be no utopia. It never was,nor will it ever be. We are individuals. Each different form the other. That is our strength, how we survived. Besides it is not in our nature. We were never herd animals. Extended family based units has been our model of organisation,since before we left the trees. Attempts at utopia, will only result in destruction. Contentment needs be brief, as must happiness. Other wise they lose their value.

Pretty good story. The alien species is realistic, rather than being made out of wet tissue paper and/or so smoothbrained that it's a wonder they haven't gone extinct. The humans are well written, the AI is believable. Change things up a bit so that the Oxrshen feel genuinely alien and it would be a 10/10 story.

This is exactly why I call most Utopia bs. Yes I want an easy life, yes I don't want to worry about money, but I still want a challenge in life instead of getting everything served. For example, instead of just letting the machines take all the jobs, only add machines for where there are shortages and let the people decide themselves what they want to work with and without the incentive of money we probably will get better politicians. Something that utopian societies in stories never have is challenges for the people and they always becomes lazy and complacent. Why do the Ai never give the people any challenges? It could be something simple like taking a trip to the next country over or go and play sports. Could even have a point system which would get many wanting to complete it.

Well written, but the moral is somewhat problematic. Those that argue that a system where everyone can have plenty will stifle innovation and endeavor always do so from a position of comparative personal abundance. They talk about the nobility that comes from the struggle to survive and thrive, but never seem to give up their own privilege to partake in it. I ultimately think it's an argument that is meant to reinforce the position of the elite atop the social order long past the time when any such unequal structure is necessary.

I disagree. Necessity is the mother of invention, and struggle is the mother of necessity. Humans (and likely other sapients) naturally and subconsciously seek the ways to make ends meet which require the least amount of effort expended on their part. In a needless utopia without any reward for struggles, why bother struggling and improving oneself? Why bother contributing any further than you have to?

@@josephpentony4804 but then boredom and curiosity are also driving forces innovation. There is also pure passion where people create stuff due to hobbies. It is not necessary to draw if you have a job but people do it anyways. Others feel rewarded by helping fellow man. None of these things are necessary yet we still innovate in these areas.

@@AbyssalArray Practical innovation is inherently a practical exercise driven by practical reasons. Passion projects, while they can be productive, are driven by passion. Passion can lead to the conception of new ideas, but it does not help with application, which is ultimately what matters with technological and societal development. Passion doesn’t lead to same kind of concerted effort as practicality.
