I visited Bumrungrad emergency room for a food poisoning episode. Fantastic service, great doctors. Was treated for over 8 hours and total charge 8000 Baht. Received a doctors certified statement and received a full reimbursement from my Blue Cross health insurance in the US. Luckily my hospital in the US is the Mayo Clinic probably the best hospital in America so Bumrungrad is not up to that standard but better then other hospitals I have used in the US.

Nice. Glad you were taken care of for food poisoning. Never a fun thing. I went to the pharmacy and got it taken care of for 300 baht for some charcoal pills and dextrose powder lol. Curious what you’ll think of the sametivej or siriraj hospitals. They’re pretty nice too. I understand blue cross covers pretty much all the hospitals out here

I found out very few Blue Cross policies cover overseas hospital expenses. I had planned to switch policies to a cheaper Blue Cross plan and was told my new policy would only cover hospitals within their network which excludes all overseas hospitals. My policy is very expensive and most people have the basic plan. As long as I travel as much as I do I plan to keep the gold standard plan. Well over $1,000 a month, paid mostly by my company!

My anecdote: I bumped my head in Chaing Mai. I went to the emergency room and got an exam, 5 stitches, a head MRI, and drugs for 8000 baht. 5000 of that was paid for with the accident insurance with my bank debit card. I easily got the accident reimbursement in 30 days. I've since increased my bank accident insurance to 50,000 baht. You mentioned what the pharmacies can do. You should also recommend the little clinics everywhere in the country. The ones with the green signs. I got my stitches taken out at a clinic in Bangkok for $5. I had an infected cut on my foot treated by an English speaking doctor in rural Isaan. For minor stuff they are very accessible and inexpensive (MUCH better than the USA) Finally, I have received excellent care at Sukhumvit Hospital. It is right next to the Ekamai BTS station and walking distance from my condo in Phra Khanong. It's not seen on the list of places famous for medical tourism but it is very modern. I have no complaints. Finally, finally. I have Thai health insurance policy at 10,000,000 baht with a $1,300 USD deductible for less than my very good USA when I was living there several years ago.
@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 4 года назад
Wow all interesting experiences. I myself personally never had experiences with clinics but that’s a steal at 5 usd. For simple procedures like that they should be fine. My only experience has been getting medical certificates hehe. Which policy did you end up choosing for the 50k one? The one at klassikorn? A high limit plan w high deductible but w low premiums is something I haven’t seen. Can you recommend a policy?
@martypoll
@martypoll 4 года назад
@@livetravelasia I have two completely different policies. The Kasikorn accident insurance is just accident insurance. 50,000 coverage seemed about right based on my Chiang Mai experienced. It was very cheap. I am a 63 year retiree on a 1 year extension. My Thai policy is from Pacific Cross. They offer "large" deductibles and (good for me) they also meet the requirements for my yearly extension. My US policy was through the University of California pension system so it was both good and relatively inexpensive even by US standards. My PC policy is about $75/month cheaper though you have to pay the yearly premium up front. BTW the bank policy won't cover motorbike accidents but the PC policy will if you are wearing a helmet. Drive safely!

Did you know that Thailand has universal health care for its citizen? thats at public hospital, but lots of rich Thais still buy insurance for private and convenience and better care. So when i open a Thai bank account and they showed me different ATM card colors to choose i was confuse because they tried to explain to me about insurance options. Later on i went online where it was explain in english and realized that the different color ATM card is for different type of insurance that you have,., for example,., one card is just regular ATM card and other color is for coverage on motorbike accident that covers your lost wages of each day spent in hospital, then they have car accident for lost wages and so on. Since Thai people get free public hospital stay and medicine,., they just lose out on their lost days of work pay while in hospital recuperating.
@livetravelasia

Yeah I looked into the k max card and the payout was laughable at around a few hundred dollars per incident. Not sure if other banks offer something better. But for Thais w universal healthcare it may be a good option

Thanks for the VDO. Very helpful! You are fully right, if you are able to afford a certain treatment "easily" by cash, why paying for insurance. In my country they have a good and affordable system. You pay a monthly insurance fee which will cover you for all medical treatment, infinitely. However there is an "own-risk" amount you have to pay yourself first, before the treatment will be paid for you by the insurance company. The "own-risk" premium is about 800 USD dollar per year. So only after you have consumed this 800 USD, the insurance company start paying for you. The fee for the insurance is about 100 USD per month. It is mandatory to have health insurance in my country (solidarity principle). I think this is quite affordable and I believe more affordable than in Thailand and certainly than in the US.
@livetravelasia

Yeah what you’re describing is called a deductible in the states. 800 is pretty high but 100 usd a month for a guaranteed renewable policy is pretty good

I have been to Bumrungrad twice and both times they were excellent. I came in same day and saw an ENT, had an Xray, got a prescription for a sinus infection and it cost me 6000 baht. In my town in Alaska, for same day (minimum $500 urgent care charge), seeing an ENT (specialist +$500) Xray (+ $400) and prescription would have been well over $1000 USD, much slower and way crappier service. I trust Thai medical care WAY more than US medical care. Most of the time I go to the local clinic in my town they make me show up 30 minutes before my appointment time, then make me wait 45 minutes after my appointment time. They finally see me and tell me to go home and call them if it gets worse and charge me at least $275 for that experience.

Regarding health insurance, my wife for example just got insurance from AIA with $66,000 (2 million baht) per year coverage paying about 35,000 baht a year. I don't know about health insurance for foreigners, but I think the ones I've seen when we looked for one as Thais were all pretty reasonable. Previously me and my wife actually used free health care pretty often though, using the Thai social security benefits.

Haha 3 days for 1k and I am still thinking it’s expensive but when u compare to America it’s significantly better hehe. Healthcare in the states is just very overpriced and in my experience not much better. Normally accident insurance is way cheaper than health insurance. I think anything except Aetna. Most insurance cover up to 15 days after accident however, Aetna require you to pay in advance for follow up visit and claim with them later. BTW, regarding accident, your motorbike also has mandatory insurance which covered a certain level of medical fee. We have this in place to make sure that hospital will always accept patients. Regarding the language, for Phraram 9, I think they also offer translator for you. My gf works there and when foreigner patients came in, normally translator come along with them as well. Not sure if they charged more for that tho. Most of the time I went to Phraram 9 if I have health insurance, the price seems to be reasonable most of the time. I would advised to avoid Sukhumvit Hospital at all cost. I went there with ear infection issue and GP take a look for like 10 mins and prescribed me amoxicillin and that cost me ~2500 THB. While at Phraram 9, I get to see ENT specialized doctor, the used a huge camera machine to check inside my ear and prescribed me antibiotic droppings which cost me less than 800 THB.
@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 4 года назад
Good to know. I do hear Phraram 9 is generally all around a good option so I went with them as well. My buddy went in for a simple eye infection and saw a physician for 5 minutes and got some medicine prescribed and paid around 1500 so maybe they're giving you a better rate cause your gf works there
@chasedoe2594
@chasedoe2594 4 года назад
@@livetravelasia not really the doctor didn't know that. The rate is varied as hospital give the range of fee for each procedure and then allow doctor to determine the doctor fee for themselves within those range. From what I can tell, the range here is not too high. But for somewhere like Bangkok Hospital and Smitivej those "CAN" be crazy high.

Don't know if you'll get to this one, but I like Camillion Hosp / ThongLo, although I don't have insurance, so pricing is a plus. They do nice job. Get my 'Check ups' there, every year or so. Do there lab work on site, and very good. Along with the full abdominal ultrasound, and the tech is very good. Not a whole lot of English spoken, but not really a problem, and do some hand holding from station to station. Easy enough. Have found things other hospitals have missed, in both lab and ultrasound. Other experiences were in Udon Thani, at private & public hospitals, and gov't was actually better. On the Cancer thingy, Udon Thani has one of the best cancer centers in the country. I'll be kind, and simply say, not a fan of Bum Hosp.

I learned about a year ago the many foreign doctors go to Thailand for training particularly from other regional countries. And the reason why is because it is much less expensive. Nevertheless some of these countries doctors and hospitals like to give the impression that training and standards are from the US. This is not really the case. However charitable training goes on. My Thai doctor in Bangkok is US board certified, and goes to the US often and has photographs on his web page to prove it. There are other countries that have decent care. But the bottom line is do they have the equipment one, and competent doctor. Because one can get crappy doctors anywhere. Never let 8 years of medical school fool you. It could cost you your life. 😛
@livetravelasia
@livetravelasia 4 года назад
Yeah I am quite certain about the quality here but not only that the hospitals in Bangkok consistently rank in the top in the world. I wouldn’t go to any hospital but if quality is all you care about siriraj Bangkok bumrumgrad and sametivej are very good. And yeah all the top doctors go to the us not necessarily for board certification but for more advanced year long fellowship programs to learn particularly advanced techniques. I thought English to a couple who were preparing to do that and learnt through them how the system works here. They still work at govt hospitals too because the way Thailand has the system set up where they are forced to work them after graduation and they stay there part time after to provide free healthcare to their families. I am pretty confident they wouldn’t send their family to bad hospitals. They tell me the heads of the departments at the big hospitals in Bangkok are mostly serving in Bangkok hospital etc just to make money as well so that how I learnt it was relatively a waste of money to seek only the best hospital. For complex issues you’ll have them look after you anyways. Even the for the basic procedures the regular Thai doctors here are far more experienced than the us and they are forced to work regional hospitals after graduation and do an insane amount of procedures to support free healthcare here. It’s absurd how many eye operation on avg the doctor I taught did in a day. Around a dozen. Idk how that can even be done safely but when they work at private hospitals they focus on much fewer overpaying patients in theirs opinion so I am pretty sure they are good. I also recommend sticking to Bangkok if you want the best cause Bangkok only accepts the best doctors. Everyone wants to be stationed in Bangkok. Only the best are allowed back for the limited slots after they complete their stints in regional hospitals being overworked to basically pay back their free medical training. One of the reasons it’s cheap in Thailand is not because they are cheap but the govt has actively worked to promote this as a key industry so economies of scale as well as the ridiculously low pharmaceutical costs attribute to it. As well as little admin costs due to cheaper labor and abundance of workforce in that area. You’ll find most Bangkok hospitals actually employ RNS to do admin work cause there’s so many of them. They are quite selective too even for for that job as you’ll notice the prettiest nurses in Bangkok. Basically you are getting the cream of the crop in Bangkok in a country that specializes in healthcare and even more so in private hospitals. It’s why Thailand’s healthcare just generally ranks in top 10 whenever you see a world survey and America ranks around 30 something. America does have the most specialized hospitals but for avg joe Thailand is prob the best. That being said you’re in the Bay Area so if you know the right people and can afford them, you’re not lacking in care over there at all :). www.topmastersinhealthcare.com/30-most-technologically-advanced-hospitals-in-the-world/

Generally first world countries don’t necessarily have good air quality... some of the most modern cities in the Middle East are notorious for having even worst air quality than even Beijing. Checkout the air quality index sites. This is because a lot of air quality factors are not man made
