Best Hunting Bow On A Budget: 5 Bow Shootout

It's hard to think of a better time to be an archer than right now. Archery participation, including bow hunting, is on the rise and the bow manufacturers have responded by building more and better bows.
While modern flagship hunting bows are packed full of the latest and greatest technology, even entry level hunting bows offer better performance than anything available in the not too distant past.
Since it seems that most every publication focuses on flagship bows starting at $900 and going up significantly from there, we thought we'd show you what was available for the bow hunter on a budget.
With the help of Shooter's Choice in Waterloo, Canada, we borrowed a Diamond Edge SB-1, PSE Stinger X, Bowtech Fuel, Quest Forge and Bear Threat. Each of these bows comes with just about everything a bow hunter needs to get started, including bow, multi-pin sight, arrow rest, quiver and stabilizer. U.S. retail prices on these five packages range from $400 to $600.

Thank you for your comprehensive and professionally done review. I recently decided to get back into archery after a 40 year gap and your review went a long way towards helping me make a purchasing decision. I found a dealership and purchased an Edge SB-1. It has a silky smooth draw and I am greatly enjoying using it. Of all the reviews I watched, yours are by the far, the best. Thank you.

All five bows are very capable shooters. They were also nice and light, so if you need to do a lot of spot and stalk hunting where you cab walk many miles with your bow, that light weight is especially nice.

I bought the bear threat, I agree that it's aggressive off the shelf, but with a few upgrades like stabilizer bar, peep sight, pin sight, then the bow operates very well. I should also mention I added on a qad rest and constantly robin hood my cheap arrows. I pull at 70 pounds, which does require some muscles but I find the valley and back wall nice. In all it's a beast that needs taking, after that it becomes a nice bow!

I bought my bear authority on clearance two years ago. It was a $499 package bow that id got for $349. I feel it fits into this category better than the $599 Threat, as bear has several package bows at $399-499, then seems to always have a $599-649 package to kinda bridge the gap between the entry level and the flagships.

@@i_read_bad_reviews that's impressive for a recurve, but not impressive for a compound. Recurve take a lot more time to get good with (at least for me). Don't go hunting unless you can almost garuntee a heart hit at 20 yards though. And dont hunt at a range you haven't practiced from, and hit vitals from in that practice.

Hey I love this video and am getting one as my first hunting compound bow thanks to this! I would love to know your thoughts on if I should shoot micro shaft or regular arrows and if micro what would I have to alter on the rth bear bow ??
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 7 лет назад
Micro or standard diameter comes down to personal preference. I've only hunted with standard diameter shafts, but I use the skinny arrows with my target rig. If the spine is the same, you really shouldn't have to adjust much on the bow if you switch to skinny arrows. Just move the arrow rest up a little bit so the arrow is still running level from the D-loop to the rest.

At 300$ one can buy Bowtech Airborne 82 0r 101nd, shooting at 350 and 340 fps respectively, with great adgustment ranges, max possible soild wall, deep valley if one wants this, and ATA 36", making drawing especially comfortable. Not for very beginners though, however general convenience at shooting may unexpectedly make them easy to even start with.

Nice review! quick question about the Diamond sb-1. Mine has some cam lean and i'm wondering how this can be tuned on this bow. many thanks!
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 7 лет назад
A solid limb bow without yokes will typically have some come lean. I didn't worry too much about what I saw in the SB-1, but if you think it's excessive, you might want to ask your local dealer about it. if you have a bow press, you can play around with the spacers that go between the cams and the limb. Without a bow press, though, you'll need to get to a shop and have them look at it.
@Maxa21Million
@Maxa21Million 7 лет назад
ArcheryTalk thanks for your insight! I'm concerned about the long term wear on the cables, so I'll maybe take it to the dealer to have a look. thanks again!
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 7 лет назад
Unless the cam lean is drastic, the serving on your cables should protect the string. It's a good idea to replace the string/cables every year or two anyway, (depending how often you shoot). However, I can't see how bad it might be. Having your dealer take a look for a little piece of mind is probably a good idea.

@ArcheryTalkVideo 4 года назад
@@patrickpk6299 I've never built or maintained these - but several clubs in my area use them. I'd guess they are maybe 10 inches deep. I'd think width would be around 48 inches. They hold up pretty good for outdoor use. When the middle gets shot out, you can move things around a little to get more life. Tentest does leave quite a bit of junk on your arrows, but it comes off easily with a bit of water or a pot scrubber (a lot of shooters around here keep a mesh pot scrubber on their quiver).

I'm afraid I have never shot one, so it's hard for me to say. However, I have no doubt it can take down a deer without issue. With bows in that price point, the string/cables are probably not great and will likely see some stretching. If you had access to a bow press to give it a proper tune after you've shot it enough to settle the string/cables, that would be ideal.

I just bought the Diamond Edge SB-1 and my bottom adjustment module is hitting the one of the cross strings. The string actually rests on the module when the bow is at rest, it clears the module when pulled back and hits the module when returning to normal. Is this normal? Diamond is telling me this is normal and they are aware of it.

Man, I only have a PSE Deer Hunter from 2005 and it is awesome. Only two weak points it had. The stock plastic grip was God awful so removed it and shoot it without grip just ducktape around and boom! This move skyrocketed my accuracy instantly. The other one is the cable system. The cables have some sort of cover and they look like an electric cable or something like that. This thing took some speed from it. It would be time for an upgrade for sure. But only upgrade this bow and I no have a plan to buy another one. DRaw weight is 65 pound and IBO is 265 Fps on paper. I no have a chronograph but I don't care about it either. As long as I do my part this thing has no spread what so ever out to 30 metes. Arrow lay in one solid group and all of them touch each other. I believe as long as you are comfortable with your bow you are fine and if you are consistently accurate than you can hunt with any bow that is strong enough. Yeah, flagship bows are amazing pieces of technology but for a hardcore hunter, they are the only one element of their kit. I bought myself an actual wild boar hunt from the price difference in 2005 instead choose the expensive bow in the store. Video wise this is how I think a bow review would look like at all times. Focusing on the point! Keep it up, dude! You just won a new subscriber! ;)

do compound bows need to be used with a release?
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 5 лет назад
It is certainly recommended with shorter bows, as you can derail the string when you pull with fingers. There is a competitive class that shoots compound bows without a release aid, but they typically shoot longer axle-to-axle bows.

Is a bear archery Gruzer G2 adult bow a good bow?
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 6 лет назад
Haven't had a chance to shoot the Bear Cruzer. I imagine it will be just fine. The Bear bows I have shot have had pretty good overall fit and finish, but they can be tough to hold at full draw as let off is just 70% (most other hunting bows come in at 80% let off). If you can find a dealer to try one out, that is our best bet. Shoot a few bows in a similar price range and see which one feels best to you.

How would the Bear Cruzer compare to these bows?
@rtonerider9953
@rtonerider9953 7 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing. The Cruzer is $400, draw weight 5-70lbs, and draw length 12"-30". 310 IBO and weighs 3.6lbs.

ArcheryTalk I'm still a novice, and I won't really be able to tell you the specifics of how the bow feels. But, I do want to tell you that I got the bow used for about $120, then I had to get new strings. And if I take out the price of the item that comes with it like the Octane 7 Hunter Stab Blk www.amazon.com/dp/B0060CRRYO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2dhoAbVFX8VHK Octane Deadlock Lite Qvr Blk www.amazon.com/dp/B007D0HN1Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ifhoAbVZD4ZBP And more, the price of the bare bow is so worth it. :D

Why did you guys not include anything from Hoyt? The Hoyt klash or the Hoyt PowerMax both well within the price points. And both come fully dressed.I personally think the power Max would have been the best of all of these bows. I also own the sb1 and infinity edge pro

The target butts we were shooting into are made of ten-test, which is some sort of insulated building material. The material can stick onto your arrows a bit, but it comes off with a bit of water or a pot scrubber.

@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 7 лет назад
Buying used is definitely the way to go, but $100 is going to be tough for a compound bow. You can find a recurve bow for that price, though. I'm sure you can find a used Samik Sage for less than $100 on eBay or maybe the ArcheryTalk classifieds.

An entry level Hoyt at around $500 - $600 will beat all those bows.
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 7 лет назад
Maybe. But the PowerMax package is a level more expensive than anything in this shootout ($700 at Lancaster - $100 more than the priciest package we tested and more than $200 more than our average price). The new Klash ($300 bare bow) is interesting, but with a 28-inch ATA, it's on the short side for an adult bow.
@krazeytrucker
@krazeytrucker 7 лет назад
ArcheryTalk Wow!! Wonder why Lancaster is charging so much more than other places. My recommendation I give is look at used bows too. You can find some great deals out there for equipment only a couple years old.
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 7 лет назад
100% agree on used bows. I've bought several myself. So many guys are buying brand new bows and getting rid of them in a few months. Great way to save 30-50%. As for Lancaster, I think Hoyt (and other manufacturers) have a minimum price they will allow dealers to advertise. If you go to a dealer in person, you may be able to get a better deal.
