Your tone makes learning so less stressful. And you have the right balance between sufficient detail and keeping it moving. That’s not easy. Thanks for your videos.
I’m first time viewer and I m only way to make first purchases. Do you have a check list that could be loaded in the camera? You do great things!!! Thanks
For audio, let's not forget the great option to record with the internal iPhone microphone AND a high quality external microphone separately and syncing the audio in post. That's fairly easy to do in most video editors and it gives you a lot of freedom of where to put microphones (or how many to use).
Small Rig now makes a form fitting cage for iPhones it's the best thing out if you're going to add microphones and lights to your iPhone. It doesn't look like a monstrosity like most iPhone cages and it has multiple quarter inch sockets. I would highlight recommend going with something like that as you can hook your iPhone up to a proper tripod, shoulder rig, or even a stand if you want your camera in one location where you want multiple cameras. You can also mount a proper recorder, handle, lights and microphones to it really easily. The biggest problem is that there are not any quarter inch sockets on an iPhone, the small rig form fitting cage fixes that issue. For one person. You should be using something more appropriate such as a lav mic. For a single track with one person Zoom makes a simple clip on lav style microphone with 32bit audio called the Zoom F2. If you're worries about syncing pretty much everyone from Rode to Sennheiser makes clip on lav style microphones,
@@miyacpa1656 Just as a run and gun I use an Audio Technica ATR2100x on my iPhone for field recording. But you're still going to need to get close enough to your source.
Helpful, comprehensive, but shy of daunting, and informative without overload. Exposing some products available I wasn’t even aware of was of value also so thank you. With yearly phone model releases, app improvements, and after market accessory improvements/releases I’d love to see update videos in the future. The amount of work required to produce this staggers me and I can’t think of a single thing I could have addd to make it better. I’m very happy I discovered your channel recently.
You genius you! Nearly invested a Camera set but wasn't really convinced. Thinking of a mom vloggers camera and this by far is the best kit compared to a camera.
Impressive and the most comprehensive video in regards to setting up the iphone (just got the PROMAX yesterday) and this has not only saved me money..... but TIME! Thank you for your detail and expertise.
Sometimes I use bluetooth earbud with filmic Pro to as external microphone, they are the cheaper alternative. Just don’t forget to turn volume of the phone to zero, otherwise you will have a delayed feedback.
Super video! I'm an old guy, recently retired and a former pro photographer back when we used that film stuff. I've spent countless hours searching for the best bang for the buck in DSLRs and have become convinced through this video and a few others like it (yours is hands down the best) that I can do everything I want with my old iPhone 6 and 12 Pro. The capabilities of the iPhones with camera apps are as good as most DSLRs. I only wanted a DSLR to shoot woodworking RU-vids and have decided to use what I have. If I want to do stills I can still use film. THANKS!
I remember that film stuff! I've actually just been scanning in hundreds of old photos. I think iPhones are great cameras now. Only thing missing is the shallow depth of field, but you can even fake that pretty well using portrait mode
I rarely sub a channel by watching the first video. Yours was different! I just got my OM4 and watched your video on it and subbed immediately! Your voice is perfect for narration, particularly for documentaries! Can you please make a video just for beginners that points out important features of DJI OM4 and how to make Instagram or RU-vid or vloging on it? I am not interested in pro film making, I just want my clips to look good. For example, where do you get background music and stuff like this. Thank you.
Great content and voice over… I prefer using osmo pocket for gimbal shoots as it has other features controler wheal, wireless control and can give two angels when shooting and very small size Hope this helps some one
Wow great info Thank you. I have iPhone 11 max pro. I was looking for best mic for videoing on my RU-vid channel. I’m just starting out. But I know audio is everything. 💕
This is the best videos if you want to know anything about filming by your phone, appreciate the effort, Thank you.. for a beginner i wish it had more description about the tools, when to use what and all
great review especially for the vlogger using smart phone you spit out all the things we have to know regarding extenders that we might use to get a better quality of filming .thumbs up
Decided to go a little lighter with my vloggs , I use a Sony A7S and a whole bunch of vintage lenses, but im now starting to use my Iphone 11 pro more often and your channel is great for tips. so thankyou. PS dude you should do podcasts or audio books, I could listen to your voice all day, calm and relaxed.
Great information. Normally people use LUT on videos. But I think u apply some sound LUT also on your audio. Your voice is also great Please do share the trick. Regards NM
Please make one video on how to make cinematic video with pictures from smartphone and music, or share some skills on my email for this --- radhikasingh70@gmail.com
Suggesting one more. PEDCO ULTRAPOD II. Not the III. I haven't used III before (There are comments about III not as solid as II) but I have the II and it is very very steady even for a mirrorless with a smaller lens.
my question here is, if you're filming from a distance, how far away can you be for the mic to work on your voice? like i.e. you have the shotgun rode or the rode videoMic Mel. I am looking for mics for a short film so in that case i would need something that woldnt pop up on a shirt of an actor but more from a distance. ofcourse if its longer than 10 meters, perhaps you could hide a mic underneath the shirt? But what do you think? haha Loved the video btw.
EXCELLENT VIDEO... Love this... I noticed you were using the iPhone 12 MAX... and it's been over 11 months ago... Since I need to buy a newer iPhone (I have the 8+) ... Which iPhone do you suggest? I will be moving back to Albuquerque, New Mexico (US) in a few weeks to RE-Open my Acting Studio.... Teaching acting for Film... TV... Stage... I want to teach the student/actors about filming with iPhones... Thank you for sharing this video...
@@SiHorrocks WOW!!! There is a PRO MAX... What is the difference from the iPhone 12 Max (or is that a Pro Max too?) Thank you so much for your fast reply... I am having coffee and re watching your video again... LOVE THIS... The Teacher (me) has so much to learn... In 2009 when I was in a movie set... the Continuity person used a iPhone 4... and I fell in love... it was really great. They (the crew) was using the Canon 5D Mark II ... it was so different from the REEL (REAL) Film I was used to (00oopps just told my age)... What was crazy... is the iPhone 4 back then, ended up being "B" roll in some cases... One more question: I have the 17" MacBook Pro (11 years old) and obviously need to get a newer Computer... What do you suggest... and what about an iPad too... "Why Not" LOL I have waited years to reopen my Acting Studio... and I need to get into the 21st century... I think I need to go to work for Apple... LOL Or at least be a liaison. Thank you again for all your help. When I get my new computer... I will sub... my old Mac will not let me Sub... Poor Baby. It is tired... (smile).
Amazing well informing videos, with a professional presentation. Really nice work! Also I found interesting that your voice testing the mics in the end was really nice and in a way different from the narration voice, but different in a good manner :)
Hi Simon, I have been looking at the ShiftCam ProGrip Starter Kit - DSLR style mobile battery grip - Wireless Shutter Button - Built in Powerbank - Qi Wireless Charging - Freestanding Dock - Tripod Mount - Works with Android and iPhone but they don't currently make lens filters. The device certainly looks DSLR ish which I find appealing, I wondered if you had a view on the usefulness of this device assuming that you have seen it of course? Thank you for this video which has shown me so many other possibilities.
Nice video. The DJI OM 4 gimbal is interesting, but quite expensive for sporadic use imo. There is a newer OM 5, a lot more expensive too. I just have an Hama universal telescopic tripod with an Elgato Phone Grip on top, nothing crazy but they do the job for stationary pictures and videos. I love the Elgato Phone Grip made of metal, much better than the majority of plastic phone clamps.
We love your content and found a couple new things we need to add to our war chest. Mobile video is having boom right now with RU-vids new Demo Shorts.
Hello Simon. . I hope you can solve the most bizarre problem I've recently faced seeing that you are certainly the main expert on iPhone shooting I know of. I am using an iPhone 13 Pro to shoot news. It's an incipient project. I bought lots of equipment . No problem to find the best lenses, filters, backpack etc for my project . But audio equipment has been a full throttle nightmare😱😱😱 I am determined to not use wired lavaliere mics anymore after near 30 years asking "could you please pass the cable under your clothes?". I think they are rather primitive and the difference in quality between wired lavaliere mics and wireless mics is irrelevant in many modern scenarios where most of the viewing will be online. I have a Picogear Pro kit, a Godox Movelink kit, a Rode filmmaker kit and a Godox UHF kit.. The Rode and the UHF are to be used only with plug on XLR transmitters connected to reporter mics. I intend to never use their wired lavaliere mics and use only the wireless lavaliere mics from the Picogear and Godox Movelink kits. But all that will be useless if I can't solve a most bizarre, strange problem I've experienced recently. I recorded no less than 100 tests trying different wireless kits (Deity, Mackie, Godox, Saramonic etc) I always used a Rode SC 7 TRS to TRRS cable connected to a Ugreen audio to lightning cable. Never a problem. Clean and strong audio. But a few days ago I tested two audio mixers/adapters: a Comica and a Beachtek. I don't know if it is related but the problems started after I used the Rode cable to connect those audio adapters to my iPhone. The problem is that I now have a very strong noise (and practically no voice) in audio recorded using my iPhone. The most puzzling thing is that , as I said before, I used the Rode cable some 100 times at least with no problems. I did a few tests after the noise started and could clearly isolate the Rode cable as the source of the noise. But here is the puzzle: I get very bad noise ( the recording is unusable. Actually, the voice is almost gone and there is practically only noise) when I connect the Rode cable to the Picogear wireless receiver and the Godox wireless receiver. I got the same noise when I used a second iPhone so my phone is not the problem so, as I said, I am sure of only one thing: The source of the noise is the Rode SC7 cable adapter. If I use a Godox TRS to TRRS cable, for example, then there is no noise. But if I connect my phone to a Sennheiser shotgun for phones using the Rode cable then there is no noise whatsoever! And there was also no noise when I connected the phone to the Picogear wireless system using the Rode cable and the Rode interface AI micro!!! Also, no noise when I used the Rode cable to connect the iPhone to the mixers/adapters but I need to double check that. So, this is a brief of the problem: 1 The Rode SC 7 cable adapter TRS to TRRS creates a terrible noise when connecting two different wireless receivers to my phone , noting that I used it before with the same receivers and never had a problem. The noise started after I used the cable with Comica and Beachtek mixers. No noise when I use the Rode cable with wired Sennheiser shotgun for iPhones (MKE 400). No noise when I use the Rode cable to connect my iPhone to two different wireless receivers if I pass the audio by the Rode AI Micro. The audio on the headphone is crystal clear so the audio leaving both receivers and mixers was always good, even when the end result was the very noisy recording. And this is my main concern: Imagine if I shoot an important interview and it sounds good on the headphone but when I upload the file I find out the sound is unusable? That reporter I worked with will NEVER call me to work again. Things are bad enough as it is and I really don't need do lose clients because of a cable. So, if I find out what is causing this most bizarre problem then I can prevent if of happening again. I've contacted Rode and Picogear but so far no luck. I think I might contact Beachtek. Their customer service is excellent but this seems to be mainly a Rode problem. Besides, they are not filmmakers like you and there is nothing better than the experience of the "man in the field".
Thank you, but just found out Filmic Pro is subscription, which at entry level isn’t viable. What’s the competition that’s not subscription based to a filmic pro alternative? Great video and movie btw
Good information nicely delivered as usual, thank you. I’ve been getting by with varying success using a simple short tripod that does steady my shooting quite a bit. My monopod has been a cannibalised mounting screw ( from a silly pop-bottle gift) Araldited onto the handle of a broken hiking pole! It was actually not bad for those feet shots and flying through the low vegetation 😅. My issue would be how to get a steady shot on a bicycle. I could easily have fallen off during my park livestream last week as I tried to cycle single-handed with my tripod-mounted iPhone in my left hand. Being 71 tomorrow it’s maybe not something I should be risking😂.
