FYI, you need to cook the jicama more alone first to soften it before you add it to the rest of the recipe. Otherwise it will have the consistency of crisp, raw potatoes. Your hash sounds good, but soften the jicama first. Salting it for a few minutes doesn’t do enough. We love jicama!
I never thought of trying the jicama in a hash but I will try that. My favorite alternate potato is the Daikon radish. I use it in hashes and in chowders, stews, etc.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this recipe. I've never cooked jicama. I've always eaten it raw as a snack or in a salad. Take care and blessings to you and your family 🙏
I'm surprised how easy it is to find in the Northwest, but there are larger Asian populations up here...even the mainstream groceries seem to stock jicama
Jicama? In Singapore, we call this vegetable "BUNG KWUNG" and it's one of the main ingredients for a salad we call "ROJAK". Pieces of this are added to cut cucumber, pineapple bits, bean sprouts in a thick spicy salad sauce made out of prawn paste (pungent to some but a delicacy in Asian countries), chili, some sugar, tamarind water or lemon juice, and sesame seeds with crushed peanuts sprinkled over the top. Yum!
I will be making this. I have seen the jicamas in the grocery. Didn't know what they were. But today, they are out. Wouldn't you know it? They should be recieving a fall harvest. I love turnips, so I gotta try this. Love hash, too. Thanks.
Hi chef. I like the little dinky doos. Lol Fun video. Can you tell me if you have ever froze jicama. Maybe blanch before. Hmmmm. Can ya help me with this?? Thanx. ❤️
Thank you for this recipe! The only time I've had jicama is from those street vendors that sell lime and tajin fruit.. their my favorite vendors! And as a Greek, the word for stuff you don't need anymore is Skata😂😂
Has anyone frozen jicama or daikon in a cubed state? I'm a law student at night and work in the day but follow keto. I was wondering b/c that would help with meal prep day as I have so little time. I have never had jicama but it sounds great for hash.
never heard of the Jicama,is it only grown in the states ?? im in Australia..PS love you recipes..You won me with the Panco crumbs grilled with chicken.. BOOOMM BOOOMMM !!!!
I never knew how to pronounce jicama. Good one Buck. Hey, I have a recipe video coming up on wheat berries. I never ate them before because it took too long to cook but I have been making them in 8 minutes in my tiny pressure cooker and they are very good to add to soups and stews and salads or veggie burgers. I need to go to manic mark's blog to see if i can find some wheat berry music for the video.
I had a Jicama in my fridge, but it sat for too long and looked horrid when I cut into it. I'm getting another one tomorrow. I am on a Keto diet and want to incorporate new foods. Unfortunately, because of my Fibro, I can't have peppers of any kind or tomatoes.
jicama is great chopped and pickled--makes a nice salad topping. I'll often save the solutions from old pickle jars and fill them up with chopped jicama
Is this dish good for diabetics, I noticed you said you don't need bread, just got the impression you were diabetic, I am, and always looking for something different to eat, thanks!
I don't know enough about it to say whether it's a good choice for diabetics, I'm not diabetic myself, but I'm trying to cut back in general on starches just to get my weight down, although you wouldn't think that was my plan if you saw the giant scone and home fried potatoes I ate yesterday, but we're traveling right now, so it's extra easy to make poor nutritional choices ...jicama does have less carbs overall than potatoes
I have grated it. Just salt it and let it drain well then squeeze it and even roll it up in a clean 'tea' towel and squeeze it. It will still have moisture but not awful. Shredded jicama--- scattered, smothered, covered, etc like at Waffle House.
Recently I found a real good wheat beer here around, first time I have seen that, and now I know for sure I shouldn't drink it. Can you imagine: when I was checking my subscriptions I read suddenly "Best Jamaica Recipe - Breakfast Hash with Jamaica" and was immediately asking myself why the hack you use hash and not weed for a Jamaica breakfast ... But ok, that made me curious, even though I noticed my mistake concerning Jamaica. and when I listened to you talking about that half apple half potatoe taste suddenly my brain started to come with Jicama-Applepie, Quiche Jaimaicaine with all that stuff you fried here inside, and even more of similar nonsense. Can you imagine how much one can get affected by half a liter of beer, after long time not drinking any alcoholic beverages? I am really shocked, beer consumption leads obviously to shere confusion, at least if a common brain is suddenly confronted with a Jicama recipe. So I told to my brain: keep quiet! And then I restarted and enjoyed your video. And my brain kept quite. Well, only thing what happened then whiles watching was as soon as you placed everything so nicely on a plate, suddenly my stomac started to talk ... it was anyhow like in that one Woody Allen film, I guess you know which film and which scene I mean ...
thanks for watching...we were house sitting when we shot this video, and I had a hat on most of the time we were there...the folks who own the house kept the heat settings kinda low, or maybe I'm just getting soft :>)
Did you know jicama is probably close to organic, as the leaves, stems, seeds, etc. are toxic to pests, so… why would the growers waste pesticides on it? And besides, it’s so refreshing and crunchy.
just a house sit....we've moved out of our apartment and Seattle and we're just traveling around a bit...doing some housesitting here and there...been experiencing some new kitchens!
wait wait wait.. those eggs. are they over easy? sunny side up!?!!??! they look perfect but are they in water? oil!??! do tell!! I want to make the perfect egg but i can't bc I'm kinda special in a special way.
I don't mean to be the salt police but damn, I am thinking that was a huge dose of sodium (for taste). Why not try spices with out so much NaCl. Okay I got to go back to watching the rest of the video. It's pretty good. Thanks.
The only thing I hate about jicama is the crunchy. I can't find ANYTHING it makes that tastes good and is soft so I don't use it and WON'T use it no matter how many recipes I comes across because I have tried to make DOZENS of recipes and none of them turn out well because you can't cook that darn hard crunchy out of them.
Hey great idea......if you have a whole bunch of rich friends......I'm living on the islands outside Savannah.....with the chickens..and my garden.I might try to grow Jicama.....
I never find jicama that sweet, but it's probably because I eat to many other overly sweet things like pastries and donuts ...I wish I had the willpower to do something about it :^)
