Visit www.jimfazio.com for my first ever sale. Sale goes live Friday, June 12th @ 12pm central.
In this video, I unload the my sixth glaze kiln, announce our giveaway winners, and celebrate the opening of my online pottery shop. I also feel like you might like to know where I've been for the past month. I explain that too. There are marbled clay/agateware mugs, tumblers, nerikomi cups and more in my best kiln to date.
50% of sales for this update will be donated to Southern Poverty Law Center to support #BlackLivesMatter. It's not much, but it's one small way that I can contribute aside from reading, listening, learning, and having difficult conversations. I invite you to research, share, and amplify voices and artists of color as I have been.

Really beautiful work! I love that you worked through your kiln issues! Your last video was actually one of the first videos of yours that I watched. I had just bought the same “new to me” kiln as you have when I watched it - so I’m super happy that you were able to fix it and get it going! Good luck with today’s sale🤞

It was quite the headache, Jaxcyn but yes in the end it all worked out. I’m a little nervous for the sale so your words mean a lot. Take care. Be safe!

Congratulations to all the winners!!!! Congratulations to you Jim on opening your store, and having almost all your stuff sold out. Is there a certain day when you'll be restocking? Like every Friday.. or it will be random, whenever you get the chance? Would love to see some tealight candle holders made from the translucent clay... pull a thin cylinder, three or four inches tall, cut a slot in it where a candle can be pushed in; just a thought that immediately popped into my head the minute you showed us how the light shone through. So cool... You and yours stay well and be happy. Thanks for the video, and the give away.

It sold so fast right? Crazy. I’m blown away. For now I can’t see myself doing anything more frequent than monthly. Even that seems like a lot. I may do every 2 months or so. I’ve been doing some translucent test again so I’ll give that a try.

I hadn’t either until I saw work by Christa Assad. That was a long time ago though. Hammerly Ceramics will have one soon and Cory Brown rocks some cool one finger handles.

So glad you found the problem with the kiln and was able to fix it. Yeah the bubbling is annoying, I had started playing with granular rutile, ilmenite, and iron which can effect clay bodies and wreck even glazes that fire to cone 10 in a cone 6 firing. Absolutely love the coasters such amazing work. Thanks for the shout out, fun giveaway. Might want to list your other social media in your info and it looks like your hair might be driving you crazy. Bless you for your BLM work and donation.

I'm glad you got the kiln issues worked out, didn't look easy! For mug handles, I like the usual three finger because it'd be more comfortable and dexterous holding when full. That's a great view on working with art, the positivity is part of what I love about this channel. Those patterns came out beautifully. The red/black and blue/black look a bit like symbiote aliens from Spider Man haha. You've definitely got your priorities in order, no need to apologize for being away when you need to. Thank you for firing me up for my own projects as always.

Thanks Foxy B. Handles are so tricky. I’m always rethinking them. Good luck on the work. Use that fire and go burn up the studio... not literally though 😉

Hi! I heard a pottery technique about polishing the clay. Take a metal spoon, and with the curved backside of the spoon rub the bone dry claybody what you want to polish. I tried it out, it looks great and shiny, but the metal leave some grey marks on my clay, i don't know if it disappears after firing, but it makes the clay stronger, and maybe you can try to polish the outside of your marbled cups, if the color doesn't get distorted it will look awesome. It don't need a glaze over it. I use red clay, and i can't fire it, so I don't know how it looks after firing. Be carefull to not apply too much pressure, but a little bit is neccesary. Maybe it worth a try.

I believe you are referring to burnishing. I love the feel of it when it’s done. It’s almost glassy when it’s finished. I burnished one piece a few months ago and it looked sweet but very time consuming. I don’t know if it’s realistic for ever cup but I love it for special occasions.

You can increase the temperature of the clay body, by adding alumina oxide.
@CeramicJim
@CeramicJim 4 года назад
Do you have a starting point for how much to add?
@shuvalassaf
@shuvalassaf 4 года назад
@@CeramicJim since the exact formula of the clay body is unknown, a set of test tiles needs to be done, start with increments of 5% alumina for 100 grams of dry clay body.

Reading through the names, is like taking attendance on the first day of a new Semester. I always say. "Nothing personal, if I butcher your name." The black and white wares are really nice. You could call them "Zebraware"... What's that? They have some turquoise in them as well? "Neon Zebraware" then? I also like the orange black and white wares. They remind me of a clown fish. It's too bad they had that issue with the bloating. It looks like some of the foot rings are plucking a bit, or am I just seeing things?
@CeramicJim
@CeramicJim 4 года назад
Right? I always give them a chance to correct me but I’d they don’t then it’s fair game haha. Sadly, I loved those orange ones too. They turned out so great. As for the plucking, and I honestly had to look up that term, there’s a little bit but I have my diamond core diamond sanding pad now so I can flatten and polish them up in no time. It sticks to a bat permanently and the small size was only $60 or so. Thanks for the feedback, Ben. Means a lot.
@benpatterson4452
@benpatterson4452 4 года назад
@@CeramicJim I've never used porcelain myself, but talk to potters that do, which is why I know the term. It's especially problematic, for lidded wares. The common solution for the bottoms of wares, and even moreso for lids, is to mix alumina hydrate into wax resist and brush it on, anything that will be in contact with something else. The alumina prevents the plucking, and you just have to wash off the powdered residue, after the firing. Be warned, you need to be careful where you get this mixture, as alumina wll mess up any glaze it gets on.
@CeramicJim
@CeramicJim 4 года назад
Ben, I very much appreciate that info. Hoping I don’t have any or much more plucking moving forward.
