I rescued a stray Norwegian forest cat I believe, that developed diabetes. He eats the Purina pro plan veterinary DM (canned.) The paté version. He doesn't need insulin anymore. He was so bad, he was having seizures and couldn't even walk. The vet gave him an antibiotic injection because he had some blood in his urine (microscopic) and he never had another seizure. He has been playing and healthy for almost a year now. Anyone with a diabetic cat, do not give up on them. The vet thought he should be put to sleep soon. It was really bad, but I knew all we had to do was figure out what was needing to be regulated and he could be better. It's not like cancer that gets worse. It just needed figuring out. ❤ Best wishes for your cat.

It's mind-numbing that the manufacturer engineers haven't come up with a practical design for the pine pellets, which gives ample space between the sifter pan and the solid one.

instead of the dog pee pads, check into incontinence pads for humans. They come in a couple different sizes and are much less expensive than dog pee pads

wow - we think alike. I have a breeze system and a large sifter litter pan like yours. I was thinking about using a tote under it for the sawdust and cutting a hole in the tote lid. I now see it should work for me and my 4 kitties. Mine go out during the day, but at night they use the litter pan. Can't wait to get my tote cut and started. thanks

You should put more pellets in the sifting pan. Cats like to dig and need a bit more to cover their business. Arm and hammer needs to make a pan a bit bigger because the pans that come with the sifter are not very big. It says large but don't look large.

My cats don’t want that much pine pellets in their box I find that they feel it uncomfortable to step on so I pile the pellets to half the box and leave the other half floor open for them to pee directly through the grate and the will poop ok the pellets. I’ve tried it many ways and I find they take the least amount of time to use it when I put the pellets this way. They used to take a long time to relieve themselves when I used to fill it up w pellets. I have tried changing them back to regular litter and they don’t use the clumping litter when I have it out so they definitely prefer the pellets.

I found the best is just to add enough to cover the holes. because if you pit too much pellets in they might soak up and turn more then need pellets to saw dust. I generally do it just so its enough I don't see any holes. its been almost 1 year and I am still on the same bag of wood pellets

I just put a little baking soda in the litter box bottom, add few inches of the pellets into the litter box. Scoop cat poo out a couple times a day. When I want to clean and put fresh pellets in I put the used pellets in my flower garden to keep the weeds down. Easy peasy.

I just switched to pellets and sifter - but I like your idea of the plastic tote -- that is better than my idea of putting it in an XXL litter box - One of my 2 cats have become rather "fluffy" (fat) in her old age and this will be more stable. Thanks for the idea. Sharing with a friend if you don't mind.

Thank you for your comment, you are able to purchase a whole package from Tidy Cats Cat Litter, Breeze, Litter Box Kit System, 1 Kit. but I decided to make my own mainly for the size and duration between changes. I used the Arm & Hammer 42036 Large Sifting Litter Pan in this video then purchased a rubber made tote container from Walmart and just carved the opening the maintain a head gap space between the bottom of the litter and the pad. just with my one cat I am expecting that since switching to the litter system that bad in the video of wood pellets should last me close to a year. the dog pads cost about $1-2 and I change the bottom ever 2-3 weeks. fold in the four corner and lift the whole pad into the green bin then reline. no mess. hope this help
@diyhandyandy9999
@diyhandyandy9999 2 года назад
It depends on the time of year. I noticed in the summer months my cat is a indoor outdoor cat so there isn't much use. but normally 1 per month. the Puppy pad makes for a very fast clean up as I just grab 4 corners and lift it all out and straight into our green been. depending on the size bag of pellets you buy this system might only cost you about $40 per year 2 bags on the wood pellets @$10 each and 2 bags of the Pee Pads

I see videos of using the puppy pad for this and I'm wondering why not put the bottom tray inside a trash bag? The trash bag becomes a liner and when ready you just take the bottom pan out of the trash bag which will be holding all the saw dust. Boom. Done. Do you really need a puppy pad?
@diyhandyandy9999
@diyhandyandy9999 2 года назад
Yes, I do suppose a trash bag could also work for this, possibly a clear recycling bag, this way you can drop it into the green bin after. a really great suggestion! the only thing would be would you still need the pee pad to help soak up or would the sawdust be enough. another set it and forget it style would be line with the clear bag and then just place a pee pad in. but now no need to tape to the sides
@jesslong75
@jesslong75 Год назад
i find that sometimes the cats clear an area out and the pee just goes straight down not touching any pellets, so that urine would sit there at the bottom tray smelling until sawdust later on got put on top. The pads do help retain the odor as to not waft in the house.
@user-go8oj4dl4w
@user-go8oj4dl4w Год назад
@@diyhandyandy9999 you could use newspaper in the bottom of the trash bag instead of the puppy pad. Puppy pads aren't biodegrable as far as I know.

Thank you for your comment. the top portion is made from a Arm and Hammer Band sifting litter box that I bought off Amazon, so the sifting holes / slats are already installed. also they were not larger then the wood pellets I was using so I didn't have to worry about losing any wood pellets while push the pellets and dust around the tray.

@@diyhandyandy9999 Sorry for my ignorance, reiterating the question of Ileana Santana, how does the sawdust fall into the Rubbermaid container? I would like to know how you transitioned your cat over to using 100% wood pellets. I just recently found out about this cost-effective litter idea, but my cats won't go into the box with only pellets, so I have another box (non-sifting) that I mix pellets with clumping litter to get them used to it gradually, and adding more pellets every day until it's all pellets. I'm not using a sifting pan yet because the clay litter will fall through along with the sawdust. How did you do it? I would love to hear it. Thanks!
@diyhandyandy9999
@diyhandyandy9999 Год назад
I was actually pretty lucky! the transition was very fast, I just switched it and place it in the same spot his litter is normally at, then just picked him up and placed him in his litter box for him to know that this new box is okay for him, and he picked it up right away. Also note that my cat was in the process of getting diagnosed as diabetic so he was visiting his box often, so I also think he noticed he wasn't getting as dirty as he did before when using the traditional litter
@Shisimocha3
@Shisimocha3 Год назад
@@diyhandyandy9999 As of today, they are about 90% transitioned now. I bought a Vaness sifting box, but unfortunately the sifting pan holes are too big and the pellets fall right through. But there are 2 other pans. So I will drill holes in one of them and use that to sift. I will copy your idea for the other litter box I have, but I will also have to drill holes in the bottom of that one. Thanks for replying. I hope your kitty is coping alright.

I LIKE that--- GREAT idea... I'm doing that TODAY.... THANKS... I have 3 and the little shits DEMAND that I change their present box BEFORE - AND AFTER every single use-- which keeps me in there breathing litter dust all day.!! ha. AND- I can COMPOST the sawdust for my roses which will help there for later!!!! YOU ARE using the KILN DRIED pellets-- right? So the pine or other oils don't get TOXIC to your cats?? PINE is very toxic to cats-- but if it's KILN DRIED- it's SAFE--- and the 40 pound bag here is $6.... and good for about 2 months for my 3 cats.. better than the previous $15 for a jug of the clay CRAP that I was breathing the dust from (and cats too) every day- and I have breathing issues anyway!!.

I've read a lot on line from different places that pine is great ~as long as it's been treated especially for a cats used, where they treat it by burning off the toxic oils. I read that we should not use pine made for horse bedding or for wood burners, because they aren't treated and can cause our cats liver damage from the oils inn the wood that are toxic specifically to cats. I had already bought a large bag from Traitor Supply Company. Now that I know, I'm giving these pellets to a friend who has a horse. Liver damage is too final. I hope you'll pass this along on other comment spaces like this one. Here's to a healthy kitty!
