A quick video outlining what we did to save money and ease cleaning by switching our litter to wood pellets. This is a cheap alternative to expensive litters and is super easy to clean and maintain.
There are a few different types of wood pellets available including the hardwood type I use in this video, softwood which is also available in my area which I imagine is SPF, and pine wood which are available in most farming supply stores.
I also share the litter tray and sifting tray which makes a dramatic difference in the ease and speed of cleaning the boxes.
Another tip I share is how we keep odors down by using zeolite rocks and how to maintain their odor-absorbing properties.

Arm and hammer has a sifter litter box and the holes are a bit smaller and the pellets don't get stuck as much as the sifter you showed.

I love my pine litter system. We have one cat and get the 40lb bag from tractor supply. It takes 3-4 months to go through the 1 bag so we are only spending about $18-$24 a year on litter. It’s a game changer

I just got the equine pellets to use as cat litter today to transition my cats over to using it.. I may have to go" pellets only" like you mentioned worked with your cats. I just heard of this alternative last week. I will save LOTS of money when my cats shift to this...thinking positive that there will not be a problem. I am encouraged . I also like that you show using it as a regular litter box set up and using sifter just as the sifter rather than placing it in the bottom of the box. I was thinking they might not like scrape against it with their paws. Also one of my cats is a BIG cat and I would not want the grid to break with his weight. THANK YOU!!

Good luck! To be honest some cats absolutely hate it but most don't mind. Two of mine have a field day digging around like it's a game. One of them doesn't like the feeling of it on her paws so she steps in slowly and carefully and gets out as quickly as she can. We have one overweight cat who refuses to use them at all, so we have a different setup for him with puppy training pads. And just last week we took in a homeless cat that was living under our porch for a few months, the very first night he used the box with the pellets on his own. So I think that the odds are on your side!

Thank you so much for this fatastic DIY video! I wanted to tell you about the cheaper and stirdier version of litter box. My hubby got a 9 US gallon mortar mixing tab from Lowe's (it cost only $7 plus tax). They are big, stirdy and work great! He then screwed cut PVC pipes to the bottom (to create spacing) in 4 corners and in the center (I wish I could attach images). But you are right, use what you have! Great video!!!

Hi, I too have switched to the wood pellets and I love them. I have the same sifting set, I think, and I noticed that you have a lot of pellets stuck in your sifter. You can get those out by turning the sifter upside down and tapping on the bottom of it (with your scooper or whatever you want to use), the stuck pellets pop out and the sifter will be clean again. Also, you don't need to dig around to find the poops, just dump the whole thing in your sifter, as you sift the poops rise to the top (I don't know why, they just do) and you can pick them out then.

Great tip on using a separate box to sift. I have been trying to find a sifting box for an extremely large boy with no avail. I will try this system with the smaller sifting box that I bought. It is the Arm and hammer sifting box, but it is too small for him.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy Год назад
That arm and hammer box looks good. Sounds like a good plan using the big litter box and the smaller one just for sifting.

With the pellets-- USE A SIFTING box--- I bought a regular ARM and HAMMER sifting box-- and a BIG plastic container that was bigger than the pan-- I cut a hole and put the sifting pan on top- so there is now 5 inches or more space in the box underneath to catch the "sawdust" that the pee pellets turn into.. and will COMPOST IT-- IF - IF I can get my bosys to USE it!!!

Very interesting idea, thank you for sharing! I've been using Swheat Scoop and a 36lb bag (~40 dollars) lasts only about three weeks. My little ones track the stuff everywhere including the bed. I think I will give wood pellets a try as you've suggested. You mentioned that you put the rocks there to absorb the urine odour. Is the urine odour coming from the re-used pellets?
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 4 года назад
There is virtually no tracking with this stuff (aside from the occasional pellet that gets kicked out). The rocks aren't necessary but urine odor is stronger in some cats than others and the pellets don't fight odor as well as high-end litters so the rocks help control the odor between cleanings.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 4 года назад
But as with all litter, cleaning schedule, box placement and air circulation/ventilation are also important. I recommend sifting the pellets minimum once a day, we do it twice a day, and wipe the empty tray with a Lysol wipe every week or so before dumping the leftover pellets back in.

@@nothandsomebuthandy I think I know what you mean about some cats being stinkier. My previous cat who lived to 20 years (a good long life) was never neutered and had the worst smelling pee ever. My current two don't seem to have any odour issue (knock on wood).

@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 3 года назад
Yes you can but sometimes the fresh poop will get stuck in the sifting tray. This is the case with the brand I have anyway, maybe other brands are different. I find it less likely to happen once the poop can dry out a little.

Hi does the poop smell more in pine litter vs clay
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 3 года назад
I find with any litter that poop usually only smells immediately after going and for a few minutes after it's buried but after that the smell dissipates. In my experience the urine odor is the bigger problem with litter. I have mentioned in the video that the pellets work better to reduce odor than most litters except for very expensive litters with strong perfumes. Also in my video I am using hardwood pellets which I find smell better and work better than softwood pellets like pine. If that is all that is available in your area it is still a decent option.

Is wood litter flushable?
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 2 года назад
Good question! I would say in theory you could, but the pellets break down into saw dust which may get caught up in your plumbing. I have read of people doing it, I'm not sure if they are on a sewer or septic system, but personally I wouldn't. I like to use the sealed bin shown in the video then take a full bag out with the weekly trash. If you do try it let me know if it works for you.

I know that Worlds Best litter, which is made from corn husks, is safe to flush. That’s what I use now. It is great litter, but expensive. As soon as I’m out I’m going to try wood-based equine bedding as litter. Maybe one with pine coating. I won’t flush the entire used portion. But i will try flushing the solid waste, which will probably have some of the wood product adhering to it. So there won’t be a massive amount of saw dust going into the sewer. I’ll let you know how it is going.

I'm MORE concerned with the HEALTH issues of the clay-- for my cats AND ME-- I've got bad health now anyway-- and had breathing issues all my life (67 years)...and got mashed between two trucks in 99 causing MORE issues- so the clay litter is making it very hard on ME... I tried the pellets- and they will LOOK at it but NOT go in it. I covered the pellets with a thin layer of clay- and my senior started to go in it-- but dug a hole to poop in and found the pellets and stopped-- went and used the box all clay.. I'm getting some SOFT wood next week- to see if maybe the'll use that. ANY ideas are much appreciated..

Mine would not use them until I completely got rid of the clay. One of them doesn't like the sharp edges on her feet so she tries to stand outside or on the edge of the box. I have seen pellets made for horses that look to be smaller and more rounded, maybe you can find something like that at a farm supply store?
