A word on Surfaces. I've had a Pro 3 for 2 years now, and I probably used it about 50% of the time at school, on and off. I don't think I could recommend it to students. The extra price is for its tablet ability with the stylus, but for me at least, I found I learnt a lot less when using the Surface compared to standard pen and paper. As well as the distractions that are a click away, I believe the feel of writing on glass doesn't match classic pen and paper and there may be actual scientific reasons why learning isn't as good in this case. Also, software glitches and Windows updates meant I'd sometimes find myself 5 minutes behind the rest of the class, and from what i've heard, the Surface Pro 4 is also unstable to use. I'd simply recommend a cheaper laptop. Macbook is too expensive for what it does, in my opinion. Just my $0.02

Here are my recommendations: -Get the ones with i5 or i7 CPU -Get the ones with goud grafs (Who knows that you wanted to game after dismissal but not at home) - 8GB RAM is reccomended (Dont buy 2GB RAMS cus My s7 edge has 4 GB RAM) - Dont use CHROME OS, no internet means limited function - Long battery usage - Thin and lightweight - not a toaster

I'm sorry but Chromebooks are absolutely the worst recommendation in my opinion, they have such limited storage and their OS can't run basic Microsoft office which is 99% essential for school. I'd much rather recommend a budget laptop and then do a separate video to show how to upgrade HDD to SSS for their budget laptops. That will give the best bang for buck and without any limitations from running ChromeOS. There are fantastic Windows budget laptops as you mentioned like HP Stream, Lenovo E series etc.

Best laptop for school should have a pen, a very nice keyboard and a trackpoint, fullstop. That's... An old Thinkpad if inexpensive, or new Thinkpad if expensive. Accept no substitutes, kids.

I bought a 13.3 inch HP Spectre x360 yesterday and I couldn't be happier with it. I bought it for school but also for producing music and a little bit of Photoshop. Can't say much about the battery life because I haven't charged it up to 100% and used it yet as I want to do a full charge cycle but it's light, fast, and very pleasing aesthetically. It's around the 1000$ mark but to me, it's worth it! I highly recommend it.

Xps 13 for me

I think the early 2015 macbook air is also a great option. You get the ports, the great build quality, and the best in class battery life.

best laptop for school? just get a 13 inch cheap one that has an sd card, backlit keyboard, and 8 hours plus battery life at least. there isnt much you need when doing papers and shit trust me i payed way too much for all these cool features i personally dont use. luckily my brother uses it for games so my money isnt completely wasted

I have been using a Surface Pro 4 as my high school driver for about 2 years now. REALLY solid. Can't say I have been disappointed with the speeds at all. I have the 120GB SSD, 4GB RAM model and it really holds up!. Though, I would recommend getting one with 8GB RAM just so you can get an extra 2-3 years out of it. Love it otherwise!

Currently the Surface Pro 4 is $699 for students (i5 4 GB RAM model). Then theirs a bundle for the keyboard, 2 year warranty, office 365, and a sleeve for $299. If you get both from a Microsoft store you also get a free tablet (~$100 value). Hope this helps!

I have a 2016 Lenovo Y700, got on new egg for 999.99. 16gb DDR4, GTX 960 4gb, 256gb ssd, 1tb hdd. It has a nice 5-6 hour battery life for me for daily use. Would recommend

A quick note on Chromebooks: There's a great tool you can use called 'crouton' that allows you to install a Linux distro (I think Ubuntu and Debian are the main ones officially supported) alongside ChromeOS. Super useful for tasks like programming, or running software made for Linux.

Acer Aspire S3 got me through my school days, it's slim and has a sleek design. Although it almost screwed me during my thesis defense, had me rushing for an HDMI to VGA adapter

I invested in a MBP and after the first 5 months, I feel I'll keep it for at least 5 more years. It may be pricey but it means you won't have to worry about buying any other computers for a while (as long as you're not a gamer)

I have very waited you review Chromebooks! I'm using HP Chromebook 11, and I love this laptop. Lightweight, simple design, and the word "made with Google". Although I have MBPR 13 inch, but prefer Chromebooks.

Not specific to any models, but as long as it has a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD and a battery that could last at least 3 hours on average use is already good enough for school use.

for the Dell 7559 get the one that comes with the 1tb hdd instead of the 256 ssd, it only costs about $100 to install an ssd with the hard drive

You can upgrade the SSD in the Dell CB 13. As for the cheap gaming laptop, I would go for the Dell Inspiron 15 7559, solely for the extra performance. I would also go for the ThinkPad 13 instead of the Ideapad, because of generally higher build quality, a matte screen, and a good keyboard. Keyboard is also a sort of textured matte finish, so if you have sweaty hands then it won't show. The Flip sounds cool though. Fanless hardware is pretty convenient, but it doesn't have as much "oomph" if you're doing heavy duty tasks. But in school, you're mainly taking notes and typing up on Google Docs/Slides/Sheets, so you don't need that much performance. I also agree with you on the Surface line of laptops. They're a bit more expensive, and you have to buy the Type Cover separately, and it's not user upgradable at all. I would much rather have an older, more reliable laptop that can be upgraded than a top of the line, flashy device that can fail in the next 2 or so years. I would not go for the MacBook line of laptops. Due to Apple's planned obsolescence and sealed in hardware, it's a bit hard to justify buying. Macs seem more like a fashion accessory than anything else. And with the huge controversy regarding the late 2016 MacBook Pro, I think it's best to skip it. If you really need macOS, then you should build a Hackintosh or install macOS on a laptop. There are many guides out there, and I'm sure the community would be happy to help!

I love my Ideapad 710s. Everything about it is great and for half the price of a macbook it has better performance, better battery, a nicer screen with awesome bezels and angles, lighter at only 2.5 pounds and a keyboard and trackpad that i can use all day long. If you want an ultrabook that isnt over 1k and you dont want to sacrifice, the ideapad 710s is for you

You should mention Asus X205TA. Under $200 and runs Windows for those who need it. Less than 1 kg makes it very convenient to carry around. The performance is good enough for daily tasks.

I needed a cheap laptop for college ( Basic coding, assignments and stuff ). So i bought a cheap Acer for around 300$ ( i3 6th Gen, 4 Gigs RAM), Installed a 4GB RAM making it a dual channel DDR4 configuration and an 120 GB Kingston SSD. My laptop is a lot snappier than much higher priced laptops i see my friends owning. All under 450$.

you should make a 2017 version of the video. add some convertibles able to take notes during class, photo editing and some decent CPU and GPU performance for light gaming. having Windows updated office apps included would be nice

I'm a sophomore in college and ive been using the XPS 15 9550 for a year now and its the best decision of my life. The battery life if perfect for taking noting in 3 hour long classes (battery in my experience is 9 at the most and 6 at the minimum) it also has a 960m so I game during the summer. the best part is that it cost around the same price as a MacBook pro. I brought my config for 1,600 when it first came out it might be cheaper now. If anyone wants a MacBook pro but prefers windows and likes to game GET THE XPS 15 9550. Its perfect, its light, its slim and is around the same price. Get more for your money.

I got the razer blade stealth. Since school hasnt started yet, idk how it will perform...but so far it's amazing! love the keyboard. And it's true, it's not a gaming laptop, but I play LoL and Hearthstone on it and it runs perfectly. No lags, it just gets a little warm after a while, as expected for a non-gaming laptop.

I'm getting the Dell 7559 for both gaming and school work for uni this year

I bought a Surface 3 last year and it was a nightmare. It's extremely slow when you have more than two tabs open and whenever I worked on, let's say an excel file with over 4-5 sheets (no functions) it crashed. Multiple times. I've tried both windows 8.1 and 10, still laggy and random bugs! Whenever I recorded interviews on OneNote for my assignment, it would also crash mid-interview. Keep in mind I'd close all programs running in the background. That's why I would not recommend this device for productivity because it is so inconvenient. Note-taking on it isn't bad but you'll be zooming quite a bit. Also don't expect to annotate large pdf files in OneNote because scrolling large files is extremely slow.

A good over all laptop I'd say is the HP Spectre x360. It's much cheaper compared to the Dell XPS 13 and Surface Pro 4. It comes standard with an i7 chip, has a very good touch screen, and great build quality.

The only way to get any of these budget devices for school is to not be in any of the science majors. The only 2 laptops on this list I'd ever get for mechanical engineering are the razor, the surface pro, or the laptop you mentioned with the 960M. If I had any of the other laptops for engineering I'd probably fail.

Dave u should have included the Asus X200HA in the low price segment! It blows away everything! It has nice design prober build quality 12h battery and a solid keyboard. It is ultra light and portable just perfect for a student.

Guys I think you should go for DELL-7559 if you are budgeting in the 700 $ range.It is a full on high performance gaming laptop.Plus it has several varrients.You can buy the higher config ones if you want. It is the best shot in that money

MacBook Pro if you're a student that's going into CS / Design tech. Industry standard OS, doesn't break after 4 years, has leading software - sketch - if you're heading into UI, Visual or product design. All my friends that code use Macs. If you're going into finance, excel life, powerpoints, sales, accounting, admin work as a post grad, get used to Windows.

The Surface Pro 4 is amazing. I got it for $750 at Best Buy with Student Discount and a overall $150 discount and dont regret it. If you have the money and dont need Gaming Performance I recommend it. Just dont drop it like I did :/
