Allowing your craftspeople to shine through a regular limited run Signature Series sounds like a great program. Not only would it give us customers the opportunity to own a "limited edition" product, but it also promotes/feeds the creativity of your craftspeople. That kind of program might entice new craftspeople to join your team and reinforces your commitment to quality and self-expression.

And if they offered a kick-back for the Craftspeople where they got to see a % of the profits/sales from their signature run, that would help them out a lot for sure during this pandemic.

Also, it isn't greedy to be business minded. Jason's job is to think about the bottom line and make sure the company is making money. Everyone else's jobs there depend on the company being profitable. Every single thing Wyrmwood sells is a luxury item. Nobody needs hand made wooden gaming supplies. There will always be someone who balks at the price of one of their products, but Wyrmwood isn't trying to sell products to absolutely everyone. There will almost certainly be 100 people willing to pay a premium for something limited and special. It's their entire business model for the Prophecy tables.

I can understand why the signature series would go for a premium price. Between the artwork and the limited number of tiles I can understand that there would be a minimal supply and a substantial demand. It's the random abacus tile having an extra premium price that baffles me.

-I LOVE the idea of a monthly or quarterly "Signature Series" -I agree with Jason that the limited edition should be priced higher -I think finding the average of the woods is a good idea -I think Roll The Dice with the chance to get the cheapest wood is DANGEROUS and not gonna make people happy, maybe just offer it in only exotic woods?

Bennet's idea for pricing is spot on. Calculate your total wood/material cost to make all 100 tiles. Add the price of labor to make all 100 tiles. Add those numbers together, multiply by 1.5 to account for R&D and prototyping plus profit. Divide by 100, there's your price.
@Frankenstein786
@Frankenstein786 3 года назад
Respectfully disagree. Cost is just the bottom line of a pricing structure. Jason has the right idea, what will the market bare? Your method sells the organisation short and frankly it cheapens the brand.
@nuttm3gg
@nuttm3gg 3 года назад
@@Frankenstein786 well it's also hard to call the abacus tile a premium or highly sought item. It's definitely cool, but it's a far cry from expert craftsmanship. Look at the master series wyrmwood does on most Kickstarters. Premium components on an existing item and it's to the 9's on aesthetics. High price tag on that is fine because it's truly a luxury item. This is not premium materials and it's arguably a base piece with a unique design. They also only did 100 because they didn't think doing both the abacus and the tracker tile was a good plan and Bobby wanted to do a limited run. All of the r&d was already done and they scrapped the idea. Recovering r&d on the abacus tiles isn't a good business and claiming "we're premium" isn't a good look. I agree that if they can't keep up with prophesy it's time to up the price and so on and so forth for luxury items. Disagree that this cheapens the brand.
@stephenhurley4296
@stephenhurley4296 2 года назад
50% of bare materials cost and labour costs is not a buisness model. What about rent, wear and tear on machines, most.companies that resell things are charging about 100-200% of supply cost Wyrmwood is not just the seller they are also the manufacturer. Its a.complicated problem but the hours of r and d divided down to 100 tiles is going to add two or three villable hours to each tile at around 15 dollars an hour plus material costs.

@B3RyL
@B3RyL 3 года назад
The way I see it is that if there's 100 people willing to pay $500 for a run limited to 100 tiles, then that price is fair. If there's more than 100 people, then you should charge more. If there's less than 100 people, make it cheaper. Basic economics. As long as the demand, supply, and price are in sync, you're doing a good business.
@laysdong
@laysdong 3 года назад
@@B3RyL this completely ignores the fact that they completely control the supply....
@B3RyL
@B3RyL 3 года назад
@@laysdong Actually this is precisely the reason why what I said works out. Wyrmwood controls the supply and price. The only thing they don't control is the demand. So since they already set their supply to 100 units, what they are trying to do now is set the price at a level that satisfies the demand and nets them the highest profit possible. And the price depends on how many people will be willing to pay how much for one of those 100 tiles. If they can find 100 people who will pay $1000000 for a single tile then they should price it as such. But if even $500 is too much to meet the 100 tiles sold goal, then they need to lower the price. There's just two things they can't do: lower the price when the demand dries out part way through the promotion, or release more tiles to satisfy increasing demand. That's because the folks who paid X amount of money for an item limited to X units produced will essentially get screwed. But I wouldn't worry to much. Wyrmwood has some experience by now so whatever price they set it'll feel like a limited run and no one will feel screwed over.

Yeah, it basically just prices some people out of the market. Which is fine, that's their prerogative, they're a business and they want to make money, wyrmlife is a commercial and the product ain't cheap. It just means different people will be buying this limited item. If it was cheaper, there'd be more people wanting them, now there will be less. But they're going to sell either way so from a money perspective you may as well charge as much as you can and still have them sell. That's tough to get a lot of people excited about though, like a bunch of us know we're not gonna pay that much for 1 tile, so I think it hurts the promotional angle a bit, at least for the widest audience. Signiture series sounds like a great idea, and a higher price point is expected.
@PinchHitHero
@PinchHitHero 3 года назад
This is more or less where I'm at. Making the abacus tile "Limited Edition" as a selling point doesn't do anything for me, even with an assortment of wood options. I mean, that's random, anyway. At $250, someone's going to feel like they were ripped off if they land one of the lower-tier woods. If you want Limited Edition to mean something, that's literally what the start of the video was for. The Signature Series hits and exceeds that mark. The abacus tile does not. The abacus tile may be the most expensive tile from a production standpoint, but does that make it Limited Edition? I don't think so. It's a kitschy, cool product that isn't so kitschy or so cool that it demands a Limited Edition price point. Make your money, 100%, but don't make this out to be something it's not.
@Lurklen
@Lurklen 3 года назад
@@PinchHitHero Yeah, if I recall it was something Jason thought was cool, but I'm not sure it merits all the attention. Like it's neat, and their customer base is big enough they will sell 100 of them at a high price, but that doesn't make it a good value for the consumer. At that point it's just that they have a lot of fans who want to suppourt them, but I'd argue $250 or $500 would be more wisely spent on one of their other products. Like getting 1/100 of a thing that's kind of lackluster, or even just kinda cool, doesn't make that thing amazing. The thing in question has to be cool enough to warrant being exclusive in the first place (Like the boss print Bobby mentioned, or the signature pieces they were showing at the beginning like you said.) This is a tile with an abacus in it, it's neat, but it's not blowing anyone's socks off.

Wyrmwood is absolutely THE premiere high end gaming accessory company. You certainly shouldn’t be undervaluing your products. However, that being said, one thing that I really do love about the company is that you do periodically put out one of a kind, top grade products at a price point that is accessible for the majority of your clientele. A $500 tile is probably unrealistic for most people. But offering a product like that that is going to be a limited edition/single run item and selling it at super low price (i.e. $50/$100) really excites your customers about the current promotion but also upcoming products and designs in a manner in which I (having absolutely no education or experience in marketing) believe would create a long lasting relationship between the people and Wyrmwood.

Cool. Go away then lol. This is the right call for their business and their brand. Dont buy the limited edition crazy expensive stuff if you dont like it or find the price unreasonable. 500 was a huge number. But Jason's right, you're only making 100 of them. Which means they need to be priced at a point that makes up for craftsmans time and the development of the tiles. And with only 100 tiles, each one of them has to be pretty pricey. Bennett's price point is the traditional way of figuring out a commission prices. cost of materials+time ($/hr)+20%...it works. i've also heard traditional artists charge by size. i think because these tiles are such a specific quantity run, just have them be priced per unit in the run. so $100 per unit for 100 units. they could be bumped to $200/unit for 100 units, but $100 makes more sense. the maker is challenging the clients (you only paid $1 for your tile) which adds an emotional connection to drive down 3rd party re-sellers. sure it might be under-pricing, but it's clear the company wants to do stuff like this more often, so it sets the tone and pace. that way wen prices per limited run do inevitably succeed a traditional commission price equation, there will be no drop off, no hesitation.

With marquetry being such a rare skill these days, and the amount of ours and specialised work that goes into it, you should consider charging a more reasonable price for something so special. It will mean you'll sell only a few at any time, but at the same time, as is mentioned in this vid, you are charging for a special skill and you've said that it'd be a limited run each time it's offered up on the website. I personally would love to see this type of item on your site more often, even if I can't afford it right now. I can always save up, or ask people to pool together and give me that one gift for a birthday or Christmas. Or just collect gyft vouchers haha. Jason has a point about the limited abacus tiles... charging extra for something that's already planned as a limited run is a good idea. Limited items in a promotion should always be more expensive as they're exclusive. Just like with Bennett's coffin, which was probably under-priced, but the $666 was still exy for some of us and it stuck with the theme of the promotion. Bring on the waffle tile!!!

I definitely see Jason's point and think $250-$300 is a reasonable price for a limited 100 run of those. Like he said the amount of time not only making them after you figure it all about, but the time and experience involved in getting it to that point all have to be factored in. If it were easy and $25 a tile everyone would be making them and they wouldn't have any worth. You know there will be knockoffs made after these, so stick to your guns and make sure you're making what you need to continue innovating with these things.

artistry and craftsmanship are valuable commodities. But let's face it there's a big difference between the marquetry and abacus tile. The abacus tile could be done by someone with 1 month of experience, whereas the marquetry cannot. A fancy slo-mo video doesn't change this fact.

Honestly, Jason's Prophecy example is a very one-sided perspective on supply and demand. It is right that you can react to over-demand by raising prices, but if the marginal profit on the product is good, why not just expand the production. You clearly have some market power in regards to high-end gaming tables, so i get the temptation to do monopolistic price optimization. But you are not dealing with a closed market, and are therefore not sure that you won't get competition in the long run. If I were you, I would really consider whether a strategy of spreading your products throughout the gaming community isn't a better long run strategy than milking the market power you have at this time.

They aren't in the position to expand that part of production right now, they've gone through constant expansion for the last few years, and the "expansion first" mindset is probably partly why Jason is CEO now.
@jadespades4237
@jadespades4237 3 года назад
Expansion is good, but if you expand too much too quickly then when the market goes through its inevitable slow period, you lose more money than you would if you kept the growth modest. This is when layoffs happen in typical companies to offset that loss. It's why they're always carefully disgussing the cost of their next machine. Humongous companies can get away with it because they have massive monetary cushions and pass off most of the risk to local owners. (Business chains).

The problem with this is there's a larger range of customers than you think, I personally cannot afford stuff like 500 dollar tiles but buy stuff for function like you said, but wyrmwood has customers that spend 5 figures on a table, not every one is a blue collar worker, if you can't possibly imagine that someone would pay 500 for a limited edition piece from their favorite company then you don't wanna know what kind of absurd shit rich people spend money on.

My suggestion would be set the limited run abacus tiles at a reasonably high price point, but maybe have a raffle or something for 5-10% of them so people who want one but can't afford the price can have a chance at them. Just a thought.
@JurrevanHerwijnen
@JurrevanHerwijnen 3 года назад
As expensive as it would be.. which.. woah boi.. it would be for one of those. The materials, skilled labor costs, machining, tools used in production. they would make 25K to 50K at the most. So far I know from previous videos, Wyrmwood does pay their people properly for the work they do.. so the actual profit margin might not even be much in the end. And Wyrmwood does constantly invest back into the company to grow and improve..

I love the signature on my Gaia vault and think a Signature Series is a great idea! For the abacus tiles, if you think you have enough customers who are willing to pay for something very niche, then sure price it higher. I would worry that the abacus is *too* niche, and $500 is going to price people out.

I fully agree with pricing those limited items high to reflect their dev cost and rarity, but the wide range of wood type (and price) does really throw a wrench into it. Comparing to paintings again, imagine there was a limited series of high-value art but you had a 50% chance of receiving it on a piece of fancy expensive leather vs. a big sheet of card stock - that would feel like a raw deal. At a certain point paying for luxury starts to conflict with random chance on the wood.

Yeah the majority of your products you can just buy “off the shelf” are sub $200 (at least the last time I checked). Anything custom made or limited that takes more labor and more resources in general should be priced appropriately. You do high end work, art even, doing even higher end work should be expected to be more expensive. And you will find your appropriate audience.
