Massage guns tested for weight, stall force, amplitude, noise levels and overall use. Brand selection matters! Make sure you also get the attachments and features, such as USB-C, you want. Not every massage gun is created the same. Just because brands like Hyperice Hypervolt and Therabody Theragun have more marketing dollars, doesn't mean they are actually the best. Usually the stronger a massage gun is, the louder it is. I don't like to settle for that though. It shouldn't have to be loud like a jigsaw tool that belongs in a shop. The quieter it is the more you can use it in place and recovery quicker.
Here are the Brands Tested: Bob and Brad Q2, Theragun, Hyperice, Sportneer, Medcursor, Mebak, Ekrin, Softerspot, O'Yeet, Krafgun and a generic model.

Hey, after watching all your different videos on the Bob & Brad Q2, I decided to buy it as my first massage gun. Really impressive product, powerful, extremely compact, super quiet, and amazing price. I think you really understand what matters in this type of device for 99% of the population, and these videos convey that message clearly.

Thank you Scott! I have severe back issues ( 5 spinal surgeries and 5 fusions, excruciating spasms, along with dissolving achilles tendons from a fluoroquinolone antibiotic) and needed something a bit more powerful and deeper so I just now ordered the Sportneer Elite D9. I truly appreciate your videos. I've been searching for a couple of months now and just before I check out, I start finding too many issues being reported. Your videos, testing, demonstrations, and explanation are the best! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for these reviews and the other videos explaining the features (amplitude, stall force, frequency, and noise). It's with the noise that I think I can return the favor. My degree is in music production and engineering and I also used to work as a software engineer for a few pro audio companies. The industry standard for measuring sound pressure levels is to do so 1 meter away from the microphone. For more formal measurements this is done in an anechoic chamber however for the purpose of reviewing percussive massagers... a "dead" room will probably due (just walk into the different rooms of your house and clap your hands once, the room with the least reverb is the one you want to use). With the methodology you used to measure sound, your own hand movement when it's that close to the mic is introducing a rather significant amount of variability to your results (and thus noise to the dataset). In many of the videos your hand looks like it's maybe moving 1 cm or more. Here's where that's a problem. If you're 1 cm away from the mic, and your hand drifts another cm away well... you just reduced the SPL at the microphone by 6 dB. if you move 5 mm towards the mic, you increase the SPL by 6 dB. Every doubling of distance reduces the SPL by 6 dB (and conversely every halving of distance increases the measurement by 6 dB) so if you're at 70 dB SPL A at 1 cm and you go to 2 cm, you'll measure 64 dB SPL. If you double that distance and go to 4 cm the SPL will drop to 58 dB, 8 cm is 52 dB, 16 cm is 46, 32 cm is 40 dB, 64 is 34 dB SPL... now the problem here is that you're going to start to approach the noise floor of the analog electronics in a crappy cell phone mic... and you'll also start approaching the ambient noise level of an untreated room (a decent studio usually has an ambient noise floor of 25 dB SPL A). The other problem with the methodology is how you're pointing the gun at that range. Instead of pointing the head at the phone I'd suggest holding the body of the gun parallel to the phone such that all parts of the device that emit sound are roughly equidistant, otherwise the physical size of the gun may influence how far away the noise-emitting components are from the gun, thus influencing your SPL measurements. I didn't check to see where you are, but if you happen to be in the New England area, I'd be happy to help (and even lug some analog to digital converters, mic pres, and studio mics over to get controlled recordings of the various guns, this would allow us to establish a reference and then use a DAW to measure deviation from the reference). Another thing to consider is the spectral power distribution of a device. In order to control for this you would want to try to get each gun to the same frequency setting like 2000 cycles (since frequency is going to change the fundamental harmonic and associated partials). You can then see on a spectrum analyzer where the fundamental frequency is, and what the higher order partials look like as well. Ideally though, the best way to convey this is to provide a recording. If two devices are both 60 dB SPL A weighted at 1 meter at 2000 cycles per second and one of them produces a higher buzzy sound, and another at the same frequency lacks that high pitch buzz, the one with the buzz might be perceived as being louder, even though in terms of the sound pressure level, they're both the same.

Wow. This is incredible insight. I’m not close to the East Coast otherwise I would definitely figure something out. I do want to try to provide accurate data, but I’m also just trying to relatively show people how loud Massage Guns are against each other if nothing else. I do have sound blankets around my small studio so it’s a pretty dead sounding room. Thanks so much for going into detail. I’m definitely going to be thinking about this as I work on future videos and how I can keep making them better

@@BeforeYouBuyReview I think you'd find moving the guns a meter away from the mic will yield more consistent results. You could even get an SPL meter. The model linked below is by no means studio, or lab grade BUT, it'll probably work for decades and it won't be susceptible to software changes on your phone changing results, or changes in consistency from upgrading your phone over the years (with newer phones using different mics). So long as your methodology remains the same, a result you get today would be good enough in terms of buyer comparison to a result you get 10 years from now. www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/american-recorder-technologies-sound-level-meter/

One observation after doing a bit of research on the B37 (and S version). Apparently, the stall force is progressive. This means that it will stall at around 28lbs in first speed but stall force increases with speed. In 5th speed, the stall force is meant to be around 55lbs

Something else to consider is how they hold up over time. I have had a medcursor for about a year and a half and while it still works it has gotten significantly louder. It seems it had just gotten looser and more rattly over time. Initially I think on high it was in the mid 60dbs. Now it is getting up around 79db which is just obnoxious. For this reason I have recently purchased a theragun. From my experience the theragun is just better built and holds up better over time. That said I'm not unhappy with the purchase. I think I paid $90 and it still gets the job done. But now that I have been using a message gun for a while I am ready to spend a bit more to get a higher quality one.

Thanks for this review! The stall force part is awesome, your measurements differ from the stats on the product sites. Currently I have a eye on the B&B Q2 or X6. I'm not sure if they are strong enough, but there isn't much variety between the guns in the same price range, so it shouldn't matter anyway. I'll come back to share my thoughts when I got my gun

Thank you for this review. The most important things for me are: 1. Quiet. 2. Lightweight. 3. Durable. I think amplitude around 8 and stall force around 30 are enough for me. I understood the B&B C2 has low build quality and terrible battery. Is Recoverfun Mini the best option? What do you think of Lifepro DynaLife (looks identical to the B&B C2) or any other suggestion based on your vast experience? Thanks

Thanks for the review video with data, and the chart with decibels scaled for the perceived loudness. What about warranties? I don’t see a warranty listed on the bob and brad site. On a $400 theragun, we’d hope they would back up their product with a warranty.
@BeforeYouBuyReview
@BeforeYouBuyReview 2 года назад
That’s a good question. I don’t recall their warranty offhand. I have heard Theragun isn’t very long and I’ve heard nightmares about their warranties. I’m not trying to pick them out it’s just because you mention them and people come to me complaining probably because it was expensive.

any love for achedaway? got the Bob and Brad Mini off of your recommendation and I really like it. Noise and portability play a much larger factor for me than i realized and this thing crushes it. Looking for a more powerful gun when i really need it.
@BeforeYouBuyReview
@BeforeYouBuyReview 2 года назад
Honestly, Achedaway sent me their cuppers. I asked to send me the massage gun as well and I'll compare cuppers vs massage guns. They said they wouldn't, and to use the Bob & Brad or Theragun instead so they would be better traction in keywords. I don't know if they are afraid to see my opinion is on it, or if they are phasing it out.

Scott, I find your reviews the most informative of the many reviews online today. I started looking for my first massage gun 2 weeks ago. Been doing a lot of research. I am a healthy senior, and am looking for something that I could use daily after a round of golf, or a workout at the gym, to massage my glutes, legs, hips, neck , shoulders and feet. I am looking for something that is good quality and good value and will last. I want to buy a brand that stands behind their products and will be around. There are thousands of these guns on the market I don't want a heavy gun either. But I do want to get into a deeper massage when I need to. Based on those needs would you say the Q2 is the answer or do I need something heavier like the C2, or or #2 or #3 on your list of personal favorites?

Received a Sportneer yesterday. Interesting different compared to the Theragun Pro. A few things I noticed. The "metal" construction appears to be a facade. When I took it out of the box I grabbed it by the nose or percussion shaft (for lack of a better term... or for lack of not knowing what the correct term is) and inserted a massage head. The metal bit popped right off. The unit itself appears to be plastic and the metal bit is just a thin pipe that looked to be held in place by glue which in this particular copy, didn't stick. It's a nice looking finish detail but in terms of construction the metal is just a skin, and not a structural component. That may actually be a pro. If it were all metal it might make it a little unwieldy to hold. Settings 1 and 2... meh. Not useful and the stall force was low. Settings 3 through 6 though... I think most people would be in physical pain before it stalled out. Amplitude - I'm a cyclist. My physical therapist wants me breaking up the knots in my quads and hammies. It's hard to describe the difference but you know that "good pain" you get when a sports massage therapist digs into a sore muscle? I swung by my PT's today just to play with their Theragun for a few minutes so I could compare it side by side to the Sportneer Elite D9. Within the first few seconds of turning the Theragun on using the lowest setting I immediately felt that "good" pain that I associate with a deep tissue massage. The Sportneer by comparison was just buzzy feeling. Regardless of what head, speed, or pressure I used, everything just felt like a different version of buzzy. I didn't get that relieving "good" pain that the Theragun provided. I'm going to guess that I was noticing the difference in the Theragun's 16 mm of travel vs. the Sportneer's 10-ish mm of travel. The quad is of course a massive muscle. Is that perhaps one application where a larger amplitude is really required to get in there and loosen everything up? I think if I did upper body stuff, the Sportneer may have been more to my liking. That's one thing I'd actually be really curious to know... if you got different groups of athletes (runners, Ninja warriors, CrossFitters, weight lifters, cyclists, climbers, downhill skiers, xc skiers, soccer players, hockey players, figure skaters, gymnasts, etc. ) and asked them to rank the massagers, would there be community consensus in terms of ranking, or might certain trends emerge with leg-dominant athletes preferring massagers with higher amplitude, and disciplines that are more diverse in muscle engagement (anything OCR related for example) preferring different features in a massager?
@BeforeYouBuyReview
@BeforeYouBuyReview 2 года назад
This is all really good insight. Thanks for sharing. Before Ninja Warrior I used to do cycling and started getting into racing before I had kids. I could see how her larger amplitude could possibly be better. I agree with the upper body where the muscles aren’t as dense the smaller amplitude isn’t a big deal in a larger amplitude is almost annoying.

Hi, in this video the Bob & Brad Q2's stall force is reported as 23lbs, with the Sportneer D9 at 30lbs. However, in your other dedicated stall force comparison video the Bob & Brad Q2 has 30lbs and the Sportneer D9 has 38lbs. Which video is accurate because that's a huge difference? I bought the Sportneer off the strength of your other video's test showing it had nearly 10lbs more stall force than most competitors.

The latter has a Theregun Pro that is such a huge relief before/after he attacks some of my muscle groups/fascia. Hello! I'm looking to buy a wedding present and I have the option to buy the "Bob and Brad c2" (not in this video) or the "Bob and Brad q2 mini" for about the same price. ($10aud difference) What would you suggest in this case if only getting one?

Q2. That’s the reason I didn’t include the C2 directly. They are basically same specs except for size. The Q2 is also smaller

Are there no actual information on these products and what they carry inside? motor variant, and the motors wattage and don't they have programs? sometime it could be nice if they run a program, like you often see with message things..like some hard push and then some short pulses and different cycling. but Im a noob, so what do I know. picked up my first one today, and will likely take forever to get here to northen Europe from CN. I went for one called Xiaomi ecosystems was around 58USD with shipping and incl danish 25% VAT, so its ain't a lot and like a tad over 40 bucks for people not dealing with such a 25%VAT ; 3 set speeds to choose from and also + two programs, where it will run some intervals and likely cycle between different pulse effects and intensities.. Comes with a nice case and 4 attached pieces and also came included with what looks like a magnetic charging stand. The motor ain't that powerful at around 45 to 50watt, though brushless with a 2900mah battery, but it should be of decent build in that Xiaomi ecosystem and not too noisy, and around 820g.. its labelled as around 1cm travel. but time will tell if it's worth the money, I reckon they have been sold for a somewhat higher price and they are clearing stock..

Between the Ekrin B37S and Hypervolt which would you recommend? They're roughly at the same price for me with the discount I can get on the Hypervolt.
@BeforeYouBuyReview
@BeforeYouBuyReview 2 года назад
Great question. I'd personally go with the Ekrin B37S. I like the better head selection, force meter and locking heads. Definitely a solid product. I do have a discount code in the description that I also get a kickback on, but don't feel obligated. I'm just making that clear. It doesn't change my opinion.

@@BeforeYouBuyReview Hi Scott, just wanted you to know that I ordered the B&B Q2 massager, and love it! If it weren't for your reviews I'd still not purchase a massage gun. There are some painful knots in my calves that my brookstone double percussion massager couldn't get to. This one is already breaking things up. Need to wait a few days between sessions though as things are pretty tender. Thanks again and God bless you!

How does the Bob & brad C2 compare to the Opove M3 Pro Max?
@BeforeYouBuyReview
@BeforeYouBuyReview 2 года назад
The Opove is a little stronger & louder than the C2. The Bob & Brad Q2 is my favorite but it’s smaller and the same strength as the C2. The Sportneer Elite D9 is probably my go-to for a larger massage gun.

I don’t have the Pro, but I’ve used it multiple times. I have the Prime and Elite along with MANY other massage guns. I personally carry the Bob & Brad Q2. I’ve tested 7 different guns including the Prime, Mini 2.0, Xiaomi, Xiaomi mini, Aukey Naipo, and two cheap knockoffs. I’ve also watched about 50 reviews. The Mini (12mm amplitude) is perfect for anyone who doesn’t need large muscle groups deep massages. Too hard on the small muscles like the neck area, tends to bounce. Very portable, very quiet. You can use this while watching tv with the family. Feels almost as heavy as the prime. Will fit in a large laptop bag. The Prime (16mm amplitude) is supreme for quads, glutes, calves, and on arms and shoulders and back is as effective as the mini. It will also hurt you in smaller muscles/bony areas. You can watch tv but it will be noticeable and will disturb others. Irrelevant though - you use it for 2 min and probably before exercise. Somewhat portable. Will not fit into a laptop bag but will into a gym bag. Mid range (‘Aukey’ massage gun) has +-10mm amplitude but can hit 3000rpm so it’s perfect for the smaller muscles like neck and bony areas, and even your forehead and face. Very light and portable. High quality feel. The Xiaomis felt very sleek and high quality. I’m sure the battery will last years and goes for hours. But ultimately the big one was noisy and much less powerful than the Aukey but priced the same (about 40% the price of the Prime). The mini is, strangely, priced the same as the larger Xiaomi but is truly feeble. Feels nice to hold but it isn’t going to do much. The knockoffs were comparable to the mini Xiaomi but poor quality. They have tiny amplitudes so just skin deep vibrations. Stay away, trust me you’ll just put them in a drawer and forget they exist. Could be a nice present for grandma though. I kept the Prime and the midrange, I lift weights + run and the Prime is the business… midrange is used for lymph nodes and tension relief and smaller muscles. And when travelling. Great for neck, arms. For reference I’m 177cm, male, 80kg, 12% bodyfat, 37 years old. If the mini had a 14mm or higher amplitude it would be THE ONE. Really like it but not quite effective where I need it. So if you are thin, get the mini. You’ll love it. If you are muscular or need deep work on glutes/quads, get the Prime. If you need tension relief, get a high rpm and shallower amplitude but not below 8mm in my estimation. Aukey has the best battery life, both Theraguns only last about 45min on a charge but it has no real impact on the experience. Couldn’t stall the mini / prime / Aukey without hurting myself. So that’s irrelevant. Hope that helps.

I tried the Theragun models in John Lewis and really don't understand all the hype - I found it - Unpleasant to use than others I tried (maybe to do with the high amplitude) - Big and also very loud - Compared to others I tried it vibrates your hand like crazy - Overpriced for the features it has I tried Zikko Dr Rock models in Selfridges and much preferred them. As for Theragun my impression is people are buying into a name From searching through Amazon and reading I wonder why the Donnerberg Miniberg isn't on any review videos? Part of the reason I am attracted to this is it has Heat/Cold head ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q6wk4Hke_ek.html Could anyone point me to any reviews or had any experience of this model?
