Thank you for putting in the time and effort to explain this. Many people are still confused by MegaBIT versus MegaBYTE. I've been using PC's since 1991 and even all these recording modes, compatibility, quality options, time+heat limitations, its making my head spin! Canon's modes listed in Megabits per second, card manufacturers lying/fudging their megaBYTES per second numbers, the conversion needed to do this is ridiculous. It's just frustrating. This video helps a lot!

This is the review video we needed! Thank you so much! I came this close to buying 128 GB SanDisk thinking it'll support 8K raw. Thank god I found your video. Love you man. You saved me from making a 220 $ mistake.

Very helpful in explaining the Mb and MB. 2nd time watching and yet still find it useful. Since I aint shooting those 8k thingy, I will settle for some less: SD card only and hence no need to buy another CF reader and so forth but I will stick with SanDisk and B&H. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
@@CamberFilmSchool Pound for Pound, Sony offers more options of cards that supports the highest video resolution. I am not a videographer, but I have turned it on a few times during my wildlife photography trips, like when I caught a snapping turtle laying her eggs. I want to know that I have the option for those rare times I click that video button.
i just bought the R5 and this video popped up and helped me a lot ,thank you so much, now i just died a little when i went looking for the cards and found out the price. Thanks again for the explanation and your efforts
I do not have a Canon R5, but a Nikon Z6II and Nikon Z7ii. I don't shoot 8K, but I am interested in all this information a great deal. I think your RU-vid video is the best explanation I could find as far as which card I need for shooting large files, even stills for my cameras with either CFexpress or SDII. I am still tryimg to learn which cards are the most reliable in the field, I always thought and heard that SanDisk was the best cards, and memory in general. Today I am not sure who owns who and what manufacturer of cards is the best on the market. In any event, I think you've taught me a great deal. Now the question is, with RAW files, how large a card do I carry in the field on a photo trip? Thanks. 🙏 👍 📸 👏
I’m not sure how much space you would need when it comes to taking photos because video is my specialty. I guess you’d have to figure out how big the file size is of a RAW photo and figure out how much space it would take up based on how many you would plan on taking before being able to transfer them to your computer.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that one of my Subscribers has confirmed that the ProGrade Gold 1TB CFexpress Card (amzn.to/2XFDGAg) does work all the way up to 8K RAW on his R5.
I plan on getting the Canon R5 as a backup for my Canon 5D Mk IV. I also have a Gopro 10. I usually record at 4K 60fps then use Davinci Resolve Studio Optical Flow if I want a smooth flow and slow motion. If I want to go real extreme slo mo then I'd just go 4K at 120fps which the R5 can do.
Ok. 👍 Sounds more like the 5Dm4 would be the backup to the R5 in this case. Just keep in mind you’ll need an adapter for your EF lenses to work on the RF mount on the R5.
Camber Motion they seem like they are sold out everywhere! I ordered a Unitek one. Hoping it’s good. I used your amazon links for the ordering the Sandisk 512 GB CFexpress 😄 Great video!! I really really appreciate the detail! R5 comes Sunday / Monday. Card reader comes Wednesday. I’ll let you know if the card reader is good! Thanks again!!

Camber Motion thanks for the reply. I bought the Sandisk Extreme 512 GB from your amazon link. I’m currently using the Unitek CFexpress USB-c card reader and it’s working great but unfortunately it’s sold out now. The R5 is incredible. Working great for my workflow. Huge step up from my 6D Mark II. 😂
Hey Chas, just wanted to let you know that one of my Subscribers has confirmed that the ProGrade Gold 1TB CFexpress Card (amzn.to/2XFDGAg) does work all the way up to 8K RAW on his R5.
I wouldn't say a CFexpress is necessary for normal photography applications shooting. Unless you are going to be shooting a lot of burst shots for sports or wildlife, a normal 128GB card should give you plenty of space. I'd probably go with a V90 still (amzn.to/2ErcLSc) to give you good speed for writing large multiple RAW files (and in case you want to do some high quality video).
Very helpful. Thanks. I have a new R5. I have a big and fast CDexpress card. I'm trying to sort out how to use the SD card and what SD card to buy. I shoot 90% stills, (RAW), and 10% shortish video clips. Does your recommendation to use a 256 gig SD rated V90 still apply for a guy doing what I do?
😂 I didn’t see that the comment was the R5 video. I thought it was my generic SD card video. Those cards should work equally well for photography because that 8K video is quite demanding.
Please let me explain something to everyone on here before buying a Card for the Canon R5. YOU CANNOT RECORD 4K 60 FPS or 4K 120 FPS or any Raw format video with an SD cars. You can ONLY video FHD and 4K in 24 FPS with an SD card. Basically don’t buy an SD card for videos, Buy a CF express card otherwise you’re wasting 300$ like I just did.
Thanks, Anthony! It figures the card that is over $100 less than all the others is the one that isn’t supported in the camera... Makes you wonder if they make deals with the card companies. 🤔
Hey Anthony, just wanted to let you know that one of my Subscribers has confirmed that the ProGrade Gold 1TB CFexpress Card (amzn.to/2XFDGAg) does work all the way up to 8K RAW on his R5.
Great information Camber. But I'm wondering if it is so important to shoot 8k which will slow everything in my editing machine rather than 4k, is 8k really necessary because I will surely need the only 4k. Thank you Camber!
I don’t think 8K is necessary at all. Especially when the camera can’t record it for much more than 15 minutes without overheating. I really like what Sony did with just perfecting the 4K in the new a7Siii. That’s all I need at this point.
Hay man great video thanks for the info. Quick question can you use the r5 with just the cfexpress card? My thought is I’d rather just get one really nice card instead of two.
@@CamberFilmSchool awesome! Thanks for the reply! If everything goes well I should be getting my R5 with the 28-70 f2 really soon. However with the rumors of a R5c coming soon everything changes....
Excellent video! I am an agency photojournalist for 3+ decades. I do not have a clue about video. I shoot images, not movies. I have 5DM3 cameras now... I just received 2 Canon R5's. Having some brain fog after reading your great breakdown of both types of cards to use. I do shoot some sports, so I will fire off 20f/sec bursts now and then, maybe 5%-10% of my images. What are the best 3 cards to buy, for Canon R5 CFast card slot? Best 3 cards for the SD cd card slot? Ty...
Congrats on getting your R5's! This video was about choosing the best Memory cards based on video recording specs (cause this is a video focused channel). I'm not really sure which specs to look at to base a memory card decision on photo needs.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that one of my Subscribers has confirmed that the ProGrade Gold 1TB CFexpress Card (amzn.to/2XFDGAg) does work all the way up to 8K RAW on his R5.
I'm in the same boat here - shooting only still for the R5 but want redundancy and 12-20 fps did you converge on the slowest/cheapest SD and CFB that can do this?
Thanks for the detailed video! I just purchased the R5 and the Sandisk CFexpress 128GB card as I primarily shoot stills. But, i do occasionally shoot video. I have read some reviewers say that the Sandisk 128GB CFexpress card can shoot all movie modes the camera offers including 8K RAW, and I saw a review on Digital Camera World that did tests and showed the Sandisk 128GB CFexpress card having a sustained write speed of 438MB/s for video (which I believe is fast enough for 8K raw on the R5). As my card just arrived, I can return it so I am unable to test it, which is why i am reaching out to you. Have you heard anymore about the compatibility of the Sandisk 128GB CFexpress card with Canon EOS R5? If what canon saids is true and it is not compatible for 8K RAW recording, is that the only shooting mode I would lose? I know that as the card is only 128GB that it will record only around 7 minutes of 8K raw, but I am thinking maybe I should return it and go with the Lexar (even though ive been a sandisk user my whole life). Thanks in advance!
If you saw some reviewers use the 128GB card with the camera then I'd assume that it works. I wouldn't get too attached to using certain brands and worry about using others though (unless it's some unknown company). I've used many different brands with no issues.
Camber Motion thanks for the reply! I might hold onto the Sandisk then. While I’ve got you, is it only 8K Raw that requires 325MB/S? What is the next most demanding shooting mode and what MB/S does it require (if you know)? Thanks again
@@CamberFilmSchool i dont get the difference between cfexpress and cfast. Cfexpress seems faster, but if that's the case why don't red cameras (like the komodo) use cfexpress instead of cfast 2.0 cards?
CFexpress are newer so they are designed to be faster, but you only need a card that’s fast enough to record footage based on the bitrate of the camera. CFast cards are fast enough to record on RED cameras, and I’m assuming they’ve been using them for a long time so it’s probably easier to just keep using the same technology in their designs.
Great explanation, does anybody have any advise on the best card readers for iMac and MacBook Pro (thunderbolt 3 - USB 2) whether combined CF Express and SD or separate? It's a jungle out there and many refer to the maximum speed of 10 gb from de USB 3.1 Gen 2 .. but that is NOT what the reader can really handle..
I haven’t tested any of the readers personally. Have you tried testing the speed of hooking the camera straight to the computer through the camera’s USB-C port?
@@CamberFilmSchool Unfortunately not - got the R5 and R6 to test but had to bring them back :( - now awaiting the ordered R5 .. research comes with very different results but I have a bit of time so wondering about experience with the Prograde CFExpress reader with and without SD ? _ Anybody?

hi, maybe you can either help or point me in the right direction: I have an R5 and shot 8K RAW videos (on a Lexar Professional CFexpress 256GB Card (LCFX10-256CRBNA). now comes the problem: I can see and play all those in the R5 camera. buT: when I access the camera connected to a (Windows 10) laptop I see the file names ... but they all show 0 KB size! the dimensions of the files are correct (8192x4320) but the problem is obvious: 0 KB ... meaning they can not be copied. bonus factoid: the total size of files on this CFE card it says the USED space on the card is 233 GB, so the files I see and can play in the camera obviously take up space. the obvious question: what is wrong? how can I copy the files from the CFE card to my laptop?
Try googling to see if there is some kind of file reader you need to install for your computer to recognize the files. I had to do this before my MacBook would recognize the RAW files from my Sony camera.
Also why wouldn’t it be compatible when many websites recommend that card for the R5 and also the Northrups used the exact card in their R5 video and said nothing about it? Thanks again
So you're saying do not buy the ProGrade Gold series cards, right? because you need atleast "325 MB/s" to record 8k RAW. On their website for the "512gb 1700 GOLD series" it clearly says "minimum sustained write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s" And on B&H Photo it says (SPECIFICALLY FOR THE 1700 SERIES) "The Gold's minimum write speed is guaranteed not to drop below 400 MB/s" So when you say "don't buy the prograde gold" Are you talking about the 1600 gold series? Which still has a minimum write speed of 350 MB/s which is quite close to the minimum write speed for 8K RAW
The specs of the ProGrade gold cards are definitely fast enough to record 8K RAW on the R5, but Canon has that card listed as not supported for 8K RAW recording. I don’t know why that is, but you can always try one out and see if it works and return it if it doesn’t.
@@CamberFilmSchool I would to confirm that it is in fact the ProGrade 1600 Series that isn't compatible. The 1700 Series ProGrade Digital DO work as there is a 50 MB/s difference making the 1700's minimum write speed 400 MB/s which on the EU canon site it says "CFexpress 1.0 [400MB/sec. or higher]" in the 8K section below which cards are compatible. Which makes sense why I've heard 50/50 of the ProGrade cards working and not. Because 50% have had the 1600 and the other 50% have had 1700 and the 1700 people have not had a single issue.
Hey edgefilm, just wanted to let you know that one of my Subscribers has confirmed that the ProGrade Gold 1TB CFexpress Card (amzn.to/2XFDGAg) does work all the way up to 8K RAW on his R5.
Great info, much appreciated! However, I agreed with you days ago when you stated that the ProGrade Gold 1TB at 400/MBs would work. Why has this changed? I bought that card 2 weeks ago knowing the same info you stated last week about minimum 400/MBs. In this latest video you refer to Canon Europe as well as 1DX3 card specs, but I believe, and could certainly be wrong, but I thought the 1TB was "JUST" fast enough. Could it be that it does work, but Canon or anyone for that matter has just "not yet verified to see if the 1TB @ 400/MBs will work?" I mean, just because it's not yet on the approved list doesn't mean it won't work, right? It could be that This relatively new card just hasn't be "tested, approved & listed" as workable. So bummed if my 1TB won't work!!!! Thank you
I wouldn’t be surprised if it does work fine. But I would assume that Canon has actually used them if they have documentation saying which ones are supported. I just don’t want someone buying a $500+ memory card after taking my suggestion and then finding out it doesn’t work.
@@CamberFilmSchool Thanks for the quick response! I'm just curious because, the Gold 1TB I bought a couple weeks ago stated under the price as "New item... coming soon". Which makes me think that ProGrade updated the minimum write speed to 400/MBs on the 512 & 1TB Gold cards only. That 1DX3 chart shows a "non compatilbe" on the 1TB back in early March. I'm thinking that maybe back then it was the older version of the Gold 1TB. Again, the one I bought recently seemed as if it was updated and "coming soon". I guess we'll see. Thanks for the great video and your time!
Hey Man great video, I am planning to rent R5 for wedding video shoot. I'll be using mostly 1080p mode and 4K- 24p-30p Non HQ modes. So which SD cards will be best to use?
Probably a V60 speed card with at least 128GB of space. I’d get a few of them so that you can make sure you’ll have enough space for a full wedding shoot. Those 4K files will still take up a lot of space.
I'm going to say one thing, do not get anything below 512gb SanDisk Extreme or Sony TOUGH. Chelsea and Tony failed this and thought 2600mbps was 2600MB/s... And therefore gave incorrect information for his viewers.
I'd definitely go for a 512GB Card, but they are pretty expensive. There is something to be said about a 128GB or 256GB. Considering the camera will probably overheat before you even get to 20 minutes at 8K RAW, using smaller cards for shorter bursts may be useful in cooling the camera when you have a fresh card that isn't hot going into it.
Hi Camber. Is there a reason why i shouldn't buy the ProGrade GOLD 1TB Cfexpress card (as said in your description). I've just bought the R5 and i'm looking to use a lot of 4k120 along with 4k 50
I’m not sure how much of the video you watched, but I showed a chart listed by Canon saying that the 1TB Prograde CFexpress card is not supported on the R5. However, I did just have another person comment recently that they used one and it worked fine. However I haven’t confirmed yet if it worked in the 8K RAW setting. You can always try and send it back if it doesn’t work.
Canon says 400 MB/s sustained should be fine and that is Prograde's limit, but I believe its marginal or Prograde really overestimates its write speeds. Most people say it errors out quickly after the buffer runs out. Stick to Lexar, Sony, Prograde's Cobalt series or the big San Disk. Lexars are just as cheap as Progrades and Sony's are generally $20 or so more than the average so there's no reason to play the price roulette game. I wish I would have found the 1DX III and R5 charts yesterday because that would have saved me a trip to return a card.

I bought a Sony TOUGH 256g CFexpress card, since that one has the fastest write speed that I am aware of. 1450Mb/s I think. And your information is helpful, many thanks. Besides, just saw Chelsea & Tony's video, according to him, the R5's 4K60 & 4K120 video are, quote, Mushy...even not as good as R6(except 4k120). Made me wonder if that's truly the case??? why am I going for R5? cause I don't think I need 8K, plus it will be time-consuming to edit 8k or down-sample those footage.
Yea, I watched that video as well and was wondering how “mushy” it’ll actually look once used in a bright environment with some good grading on top of that. Glad to help!
I watched that video too and I was kinda baffled. What I got from it was, basically the r6 looks better than the r5 in every resolution except when you put the r5 into 4k HQ. That does not make any sense to me. I’ve preordered the R5 but have been watching everything I can to maybe convince myself to get the R6 and maybe a lens. Any thoughts on why the r5 would look worse?
Keep in mind that they are zooming in really far to see things that most people won’t even notice. If you really want good video, make sure you subject is lit properly and most cameras will look close to the same. Also, they are preproduction models that were used so there may be some tweaks to the actual cameras. And do we know if they are using the exact same lens for both cameras?
@@take2studio187 And R5 has worse overheating issue. For its "Mushy" video, I suppose it may has something to do with the recording quality Tony has chose: RAW ALL-I IPB, but that's my guess.
You have to consider too if any sharpening was added for the 8K RAW. Because RAW is going to be softer coming out of the camera because you add all your adjustments in post. If you’re comparing RAW out of the camera with another camera that already has sharpening added in the compression, then that’ll make a big difference.
I don’t remember off the top of my head, it if you pause it on that chart in the video it’ll tell you. No clue on the prices. I guess they just feel they are a more reputable name that justifies a higher price.
Can I use SanDisk CFexpress 64gb or 128gb for 8k RAW or 4K 120? Most slow motion stuff is short so I don't need a big storage and difference in the price more than double by going to "Supported" 256GB CF Card, I know 64/128 SanDisk spec says that is "not supported" but just got an info from my local pro shop that it will work
I wouldn’t doubt that it’ll work. Now sure why Canon says that, but I just don’t want to post links to cards that they say aren’t supported. You can always try, and let us know your results so I can update my info in the description.
