BEST MK1 TT Mods | Which Are Really Worth Your Money

Hey everyone. It's still a bit too cold outside to do any cosmetic work on the car (such as starting our vynal wrap). So today I wanted to take some time to go over the mods I saw the biggest difference with for my TT. If you follow an upgrade path similar to this I am sure you will love your car even more, and learn a ton about it in the process. All of these are mods I firmly believe anyone can learn to do as well :) The only mildly annoying one would be removing the factory downpipe.
Thank you a ton for watching! I hope you learned something and enjoyed the video.
Next episode I am planning on learning some paint correction to improve the looks of the car. We are also scheduled to get a ton of parts in the mail for the car ;)

The best TT mod is to buy the right TT and leave it alone. My 05 3.2L Quattro DSG SLine is perfect just as it is. Best exhaust note, just right amount of power, best transmission ever made, practical amount of load space. Mine is stock even down to the 7 spoke 18” wheels unique to the SLine DSG. I never had it chipped, the Audi engineers got the tuning perfect on the SLine cars. The VR6 and DSG combo protects my drivetrain from my own enthusiasm by never letting me run over redline, and never letting me lug the engine. Had it for 18 years now and it’s till my daily driver. Gets 30 mpg. Still looks great.

Great video! I highly agree on these mods. The tune is the most drastic, and even a box tune makes a world of difference. The next upgrades I would recommend is adjust rear camber kit, and coil overs. These two suspension mods really help with response and braking. Which leaves me by upgrading the rotors to vented. When driving hard you also need to stop.

I've done all 5 of these mods plus 1. Neuspeed rear bar vs. H&R. Revo tune. Forge DV. Intake (I forget). 42DD 3" downpipe. I did go back to the stock shifter and exhaust. The shortshift was too notchy for me, and the 3" turbo-back a bit loud. However, I did give up some performance for a quieter exhaust. My son now owns the car. 250k miles. My +1 mod was a Haldex Blue Controller, making the traction balance closer to 50/50. Not sure you can find them any more. At one time, I was running Devil's Own water/meth injection, 1 step colder plugs. I replaced all my hoses with a Forge silicone hose kit.

Wonderfully told the story of how a TT can a be a fast and really cool sportscar with great emotions. Enginewise you can additionally fit a FMIC. In comparison to the 180hp, single SMIC, you can cool down the intake air over 40 C (0C air: stock 55C, FMIC 5-10C).

Good video, just purchased my MK1 tt 180 this January. I've put in an aftermarket air intake and wanted to get more out it by custom remapping the car. Any tips for replacing the downpipes and remapping the ECU?
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
Glad you liked the video! I believe the 180hp mk1tt has a much easier downpipe to remove than the 225, so my main suggestion would be to use some rust remover if you think the bolts on the dp will be seized. Also for the remap there are tons of options for you! If you have a ton of mods, or plan on going bigger turbo later it may be a good idea to go with a more custom tune to establish a relationship with a tuner early. Otherwise, any off the shelf tune like APR or Revo will work great! Thank you for the support!

I'm looking around for good first cars to buy since I'm taking my driving license soon. I've been practice driving with my moms 2007 Renault Clio which is a nippy little hatchback even with just 75 hp, I quite like that stiff rally feeling. So my question is, Would you recommend the Audi TT as a first car and what driving characteristics does it have? does it feel like a light and agile rally ish car or is it more of a straight line speed car? Where I live the Mk1 TT FWD with a 180 horsepower is readily available and quite cheap, or should I opt for the 225 quattro if I find one for a decent price? I also really like your mod list, very solid and I will definitely draw inspiration from it if I buy one! Great video man! :)
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
If you don't mind learning to do work on the car yourself I think it would be a really fun first car! My first car was an Acura RSX which was a light fwd car. I would say that the tt feels heavier than that one did, but it has a very short wheelbase so it feels very "chuckable" into corners and it handles great! It is much more of a corner car than a straightline car like an S4. You can always go test drive one to see how you like it too:) both the 180 and 225 have alot of potential from a modding perspective. The 225 will have more power with full bolt ons, but the mods are more expensive than for the 180. The 180 will also be plenty quick with bolt ons and a tune. (My a4 had the same engine and it was a blast when tuned) If you are planning on eventually going big turbo then either one would make a great candidate! Thank you for the support. Happy to answer any more questions:)

@@HunterDirection Thank you for answering! I guess that settles it, I'm going to buy myself a TT :)! Its in my price range, insurance is dirt cheap and its not extremely thirsty. I was mostly worried about the handling and feel of the car but you description feels in line of what I'm looking for! I'll se about what TT's come up for sale but I will definitely look out for the 225 in first place but the FWD 180 will do just fine, I don't know about the 180 quattro though since many people on forums claim its sluggish with just 180 horsepower. I read somewhere that there is heavy factory customizations done to the 225 1.8t engine with stuff like forged pistons, better turbo like you mentioned but also a better intercooler which begs the question, can I make the 180 quattro make the same sort of power reliably with little customization or will it need a lot of mods? since I'm a student I'm a little tight on cash and if I'm lucky my birthday money can help cover the remaining money I need just for the car itself. but thank you for taking your time with my question man, It's greatly appreciated!

That's a fantastic question! The mpg varies a ton depending on how you drive the car. I still average the stock MPG when I drive normally around town and on the freeway. I have a question, I bought a 180 with Quattro nad 6 speed as a daily. It's around 100k miles young. I just wanted something fun to drive. Mild affection grew into love and obsession and want to invest some serious time and money into my car. I am mechanically skilled and motivated but a total newbie to car mechanics, I know most of the basics but problem-solving gets challenging sometimes. The question is, should I sell my decent 180t and buy a nice 225 before doing anything serious to it or will the 180 suffice. What would you recommend?
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
That's a great question! My car before this was a 1.8t a4 avant with the same engine in the 180. With a tune and bolt-ons it was a really fun car. The main difference between the two is the turbo (ko3 vs ko4) the latter of which offers just a bit more top end power. I made a video about all the different mk1tt variants if you want more detail too. It really depends how far you want to take the build. You can have a blast with the 180! Plus the mods are cheaper for it since it's a more common engine and it's great to learn on because parts are everywhere. With full bolt-ons the 225 would be faster, but they will both be really fun. If you're looking as far down the road of putting a bigger turbo on, then either one you start with will be perfect since you will likely want to build the engine anyways. :) happy to answer any more questions! Thank you for the support!

Hello there, If you have a 180 tt Quattro, is the same engine as the 225 just the turbo that you have is smaller. Get an upgrade turbo and a tune with a FMIC, and the rest of the mods that you saw here and you're good, the luck is that you have a Quattro, that's perfect.

Good video man, I have a 225 roadster, with basically all the mods you have, except for a FMIC, REVO tune, coilovers rear adjustable sway bars, and so on. Check the Parrot Bros Channel, my body Dom have a lot of cool videos about TTs and his friend also BWTT. Check them out and all the work can be done by someone with tools and patience. Check also to put an P3 gauge that plug to the OBD 2 outlet and gives you all kind of info. Good luck with the car.

I am glad to hear you like the videos! It sounds like you've got a sweet car! I have seen both of those channels and am a fan of both of their work:) I looked into the P3 gauge and it seems awesome from what I've seen, I will have to look into getting one for my car. Thank you for the support!

Where did you buy the red 4mm silicone hoses?
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection Год назад
I have a used a few different brands for 4 mm hoses on my various cars. To be honest so long as they are automotive rated silicone hoses you should be all set. You could probably find some at any automotive store. There also are tons on eBay. If you want to spend a little more you can get them from ECS or Urotuning.

Hello. I have been thinking about buying a 225 TT, how can I distinguish a Quattro 180 from a true 225? Thanks!
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection Год назад
There are a few ways. 225s have dual exhausts, though some people will try to swap from a single to a dual to "fake" a 225 for resale value. The surefire way to tell is to look in the engine bay. The 225 engine has a much different layout than the 180s. The 225s have twin intercoolers from the factory, so there is a large L shaped charge pipe that comes across the top part of the engine. You can also tell by looking at the intake manifold, which exits on different sides depending on being a 225 or a 180. Hopefully that helps! Thank you for the support!

@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
That is a great list! If you have easy access to a boost leak tester, that is a great way to find any leaks in the system you can't find by eye. I would also suggest installing a boost gauge so you have an eye into how the car is running. It's a cheap/easy install and will save loads of time when diagnosing any future issues. I would also suggest making sure your timing belt, fuel filter, and other fluids are all up to date. Happy to suggest more if you'd like. Thank you for the support!

Separate question: I have a tachometer that does not work. I have installed a different instrument cluster and same thing, tach still does not work. I replaced the fuse, nothing. I looked at wiring schematics and can’t figure out where the sensor for tachometer would be. Any ideas? Next steps?

@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
That's not a stupid question at all if you're just getting into cars:) Mine is a 225 quattro, if yours is also one then they will fit just fine. You may need to find some slightly different parts if you have a 180. If it's different you can put the year and model into a website like urotuning.com or ECStuning and they will pull up the same type of parts but make sure they fit your car:) hopefully that helps. Feel free to reach out with some more questions if you have any.
@MadCheshire
@MadCheshire 2 года назад
@@HunterDirection According to my paperwork is it's the 225 quattro, just the 01 version. I have no way of telling the difference. I know it's a 6 speed manual Trans, and it's got a 4 cylinder in it. I also know it shakes at higher speeds, so I'm getting the tires aligned, and then I'm gonna get that sway bar and put it on.
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
@@MadCheshire it sounds like an awesome car:) the 01 and 02 tt 225s are pretty much exactly the same when it comes to what parts work on them. You will love the sway bar when you get it on! Didn’t they specifically made the rear softer to prevent lift oversteer?
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
From my research it looks like they did reduce the rear sway bar by 1mm to increase the understeer and prevent the car from being more neutral(neutral cars like to lift odd oversteer). But this was only one of several changes they made to the car. The car had almost 130ftlbs of lift in the rear at 125mph but this was cut to around 56 with the spoiler they added to the rear. This lifting force was the main problem that caused the notorious highway crashes from 100+mph lane changes. You are spot on in that adding the rear sway bar will make the car feel more neutral and allow the car to oversteer more due to that. Thankfully from my impression of this it is easy to control at normal driving speeds:) so long as you know the driving tendencies of a more neutral car and don't swerve or lift off mid corner at fast speeds the car is just fine with this upgrade. Thanks for the support by the way!

@@HunterDirection Are you joking man? Thank you for the quality content. I am looking forward to your big turbo plans, I’ve been thinking about it myself. Planning on stroking the motor or staying at 1.8?
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
I am still on the fence for that part, but heavily leaning towards stroking it. I think the higher displacement would be really useful for reducing the turbo lag and giving the car more usable power. I'm still researching the pros and cons though. It will be a blast either way for sure haha! I'm glad you're excited!
@dimitrist3561
@dimitrist3561 2 года назад
@@HunterDirection Stock displacement won't be enough for a g25-660 turbo from what I'm told. Maybe a g25-550. Other than the money, which is of course a huge factor, my only real concern is passing local MOT. I think I'm already on the limit with a 100 cell cat, I can't imagine stroking to 2l will be any better!
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
@@dimitrist3561 Those are great points! I totally agree that money is a huge factor for going big turbo. I think you are right about the stroker making emissions worse for MOT. I'm doing alot of research into more budget builds to see what people like to run on these engines and see what seems like the best option for this build. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted when I find a route that looks good.

Can’t you just change the suspension, instead of the sway bar?
@HunterDirection
@HunterDirection 2 года назад
The sway bar is a part of the suspension system with the goal of managing a good portion of the side to side body roll. If you are talking about adding coilovers instead of the oem springs then yes that will also help with body roll by lowering the center of gravity and reducing the suspension travel, but in the ideal world you would want to do both upgrades. :) My goal was to make the car behave more neutrally in a corner and reduce alot of the body roll. Coils will be next for the suspension. Thanks for the support!
