I grew up an Astros fan (eventually switched to being a Yankees fan) but there were some players who if but for injury... Cesar Cedeno was amazing early in his career. Very Ricky Henderson like numbers. JR Richards was a consistent 300 K pitcher who was at his peak when he had a stroke. I had the 1979 Topps strikeout leaders card with JR leading the NL and Ryan for the AL. If they had been able to pitch together for a few years. The 'Stros pitching was unreal back then... Joe Niekro, Ken Forsch, a young Joaquin Andujar, Dave Smith and Joe Sambito out in the pen,... later they brought in Don Sutton.... I think both JR and Cesar would have been HOFers if not for health problems. Joe Niekro... well, his brother made it. He might be an outside case. Dave Smith and Joe Sambito both had some dominant years as closers but closers weren't valued as high and neither had the longevity. Berkman was great in his prime... But my vote? Jim 'The Toy Cannon' Wynn might also be an outside candidate. His power numbers were hurt by playing in the Astrodome and his batting average was never great but he had crazy walk totals for the era. He had six seasons with over 100 walks and one with 148. He had 3 seasons with over 30 HRs playing half his games in the Astrodome, which for today's fans, to put it into context, was the anti-Coors, dare I say it, even the anti-prehumidore-Coors. It was were home runs went to die. (Actually, that was one of the things that made it possible to stop liking the Astros. They constructed their teams entirely differently after leaving the Astrodome.) bleacherreport.com/articles/421457-jim-wynn-a-deserving-hall-of-famer
@Gemnist98
@Gemnist98 Год назад
In terms of players that still have the chance, the best Astro not yet in the Hall of Fame is undoubtedly Billy Wagner. I’m okay with Marc picking Berkman though; he was an insane hitter that, outside of Houston, tragically got overshadowed by the other two Killer B’s with Bagwell’s slugger stats and Biggio’s longevity winning out and giving them Hall of Fame stats.

Galarraga was a beast offensively and defensively. A very smart player. He did have a horrible slump for a few years after leaving Montreal, and although he did have a 3 to 4 year slump after leaving Montreal, he bounced back nicely. He is the one guy who would take over games when his number was called up with men on base. A strong candidate for the hall, if they ever truly gave guys a second look. Fred McGriff was just super consistent, and like Galarraga, always a class act. He needs to be in the hall. Delgado is a hall of famer, as he was one of the greats of his generation. It is most likely that his political stance against the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, as well as, the use of Vieques (PR) for weapons' testing. Delgado was great, and should be in the hall, as politics should not be a barrier for anyone to be in the hall.

I wouldn't even worry about Jackson not knowing what he signed. His performance proves he didn't try throwing anything. For the series he had no errors, 12 hits which was a World Series record until 1964, and hit .375 for the series, the highest average for either the Sox or Reds.
@davidlewis5929
@davidlewis5929 4 года назад
@ but he took the money knowing what it was for. He knew what they wanted when he took the money, he knew what his teammates were doing and said nothing which means regardless of his performance he was accepting of the act in throwing the series. If bank robbers get caught prior to making it to the get away car the get away drive still gets charged as an accomplice. I feel for Joe but he didn't do the right thing. If he would have taken the money then gone to his manager or the commissioner and said his teammates were going to throw the game, he would be in the HoF. By the time he was made the offer several players were already tossed from baseball and the league made sure everyone knew if they were caught that would be the case. It is a sad story but an excellent warning to others. One which another player on this list clearly failed to heed.

Although I do agree with some of your picks (Dave Parker, Dwight Evans) I think you are looking over some older players......... Tony Oliva, Tommy John, Jim Kaat to name a few. Not to meniton if you go way back and factor in players who lost time to military service such as the Tigers Cecil Travis or Indians batting champion Lew Fonseca who had his career cut short due to injury.... or even Carl Mays who had his incident on the diamond and was forever thrown away in the history of baseball. I guess I am just a little biased though because it is hard for me to characterize someone from the steroids era as a HOFer because it is hard to believe who wasn't using and was. Great work however wish I would have thought up this idea. Keep up the good work.
