I cross referenced that he did lose the entirety of 52 and 53, they don't count 52 he was 6 games 53 37. That's why most people reference him losing 5 seasons not 3.

Ted won 2 Triple Crowns (1942,1947) yet didn't win the MVP either time. Just missed winning a third in 1949, won the MVP. Go figure.

Although I would not put Ted Williams in my top 5, he really missed 5 seasons to military service. Even 25 HR times 5 seasons would have easily put him over 600 HR.

@@PFB1994 I put him as number 1. It wasn't just 5 yrs it was 5 prime years. He was the last to hit .406. He could have easily hit .400 again if not once but twice more. It doesn't count but he did in his two shorten seasons hit.400. So average lifetime would have been higher. He would have easily equaled every number Ruth hit and more.

And his career batting average at day and night (or is it home and away?) are exactly the same too.

He almost has the same rs 1949 and rbi 1951

Speaking of high school teams, Frank was part of what was easily the greatest high school outfield ever. In the early 1950s at McClymonds high school in Oakland, CA Frank shared the outfield with Curt Flood and Vada Pinson. All got drafted by Cincinnati, all became All Stars. No other high school outfield is even remotely close to this.

Non of those things you mentioned about Ryan determine how good a player is. Nolan Ryan is absolutely not a top 25 player he’s probably in that 60s range. He had 83 war in 27 years and had a career 112 ERA+ he was really great but he’s easily the most overrated player of all time.

Prime Albert is top 25 but he was a big disappointment in Anaheim. None of the others had such issues. I am a big Albert fan but not in the top 10 if you look at the whole picture.

Projecting those games missed out he’s likely the home run king and has 3k hits and in the conversation as best ever not just top 10. Trout has already missed about 2 seasons due to injury. When it’s all said and done those 2 years can add up to a lot of extra stats. That’s all I’m really comparing

If this guy took his top 25 players and made that into a MLB roster, as great as they are, they wouldn't win many games. All those great pitchers - Pedro, Seaver, both Johnsons, etc. - throwing unhittable pitches...that would all go to the backstop. Even all the batters striking out would reach base. There would be an endless parade of base runners circling around to score. All because he doesn't have a catcher. Johnny Bench has to be on this roster.

Rivera is definitely one of the most skilled pitchers ever, but his value as a reliever just doesn't allow him to be considered a top 25 player bc his impact was limited only pitching 1-2 innings out of the pen as opposed to some of these starters who went 8-9 innings. How could someone with 7 no hitters and the all-time strikeout king that no one will catch, not be on this list. When he first came into the league he didn't know where the ball was going, but once Tom House coached him he put it all together.

For me The Ryan Express was the most amazing “offensive” pitcher the game has ever seen with his strikeouts and complete and perfect games but his “defensive “ stats bring him down. He gave up too many homers and way too many grand slams, lots of losses and walked way too many batters. Still, as a young kid, I never saw a more dominant physical pitcher and the fact he could still throw a fastball over 100 in the 8th and 9th inning of several games is a testament to his raw physical presence.

I think he is the second best for both offense and defense for catchers (behind Piazza and Molina respectively), but both Piazza and Molina were significantly worse than Bench in the opposite side of the ball that he clears them both easily.

Ryan was great but not better than any of the pitchers listed here. Just look at his stats, walked a ton of guys, gave up a ton of hits, wild pitches like crazy, no Cy Youngs...he was good but not top 25 good.

Nolan Ryan was by far the greatest power pitcher of all time nobody will beat his so re ord no hitters and he's average you say oh my God unsubsidized now

Great comment. Watching Bonds hit was like watching a video game. You couldn't believe it was real life. A man amongst boys. Bonds was so good, he basically broke the game, hence the absurd amount of walks and intentional walks. Bonds in baseball was the equivalent of Gretzky in hockey, Wilt in basketball, Tiger in golf, Pele in soccer: simply changed the sport. The opposition had to come up with all new strategies, just to try and contain him, and he still excelled. 7 MVP's, but objectively should've had 9-10. The year Bonds lost the MVP race to Terry Pendleton was criminal. Also to be noted: Bonds never retired. He was forced out of the game.

He was forced out for good reason, although I'm still inclined to say, regardless, I think Ruth is #1, but #2 is Bonds. Imagine how many more HRs Ruth would have got if he had never pitched (which means he only played 1 out of every 5 games). Ruth would be over 800 HRs too, maybe even 900, during an Era where the ball wasn't made the same and was harder to hit for power. Bonds was an all time great, even though he took roids. There wasn't a rule against what he was doing, and when they did make the rule, they retroactively shamed anyone that did do it. It's a shame, those players probably just did it for the love of the game and did everything they could to improve their health. It didn't make them see the ball better, and steroids make you heavier, so it's not like any of those guys were speed demons or anything. And what about all the players up to 2001, you mean to tell me NONE of those players were juicing? Hank Aaron didn't do ANY steroids in 23 seasons? Gimme a break man. They were all doing it at some level, to improve their performance.

It was insane. The year he hit 73 home runs ESPN interrupted their broadcasts to show Bonds's plate appearances live. People from all fanbases would tune in to see his historic at-bats. We all knew we were witnessing something special.
