Former North American Muay Thai Champion Mike Zhang, shares his best technique to take out an opponent in a street fight.
I recently had the opportunity to train at the awesome Critical Bench Compound in Florida. My buddy Mike Zhang was here training as well! We were going through past comments from his videos and found many of you asked for specific fighting techniques from Mike. Like what to do in a real street fight situation? Or how can you defend yourself from an attacker in a real life situation. This is something I'm curious about as well. So today I got Mike to jump on the camera to share his best street fighting move for beginners and his advice on how best to handle street fights.
To your health & fitness,
Thomas Tapp

Hey Tapp bros here, thanks for watching! Big shout out for Mike Zhang for hoping on the channel! And if you want to start your training with Mike, get his KickBoxer Abs program here: bit.ly/kickboxer-abs Today’s question...What other training would you like to learn from Mike? Also remember what Mike said at the beginning of this video, the best thing to prepare for a real fight is to practice conflict resolution and to avoid a fight in the first place. A street fight can be unpredictable and extremely risky. However, if you have no choice, this tactic is one of Mike’s favorites for protecting your essential body parts and taking out your opponent. Like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

Yes indeed! Love this counter-offensive tactic. I learned it about 10 years ago doing KFM, with the principle of cover and counter. We also train to close the gap as well (instead of always stepping back) - this stuffs the punch as you cover, step in, counter - or as they call it: Cover-Crash-Counter. It is a great patten disrupter of the assailant's attack. It really works - I started countering this way and when I train/spar with other MA/MMA/combatives folks it is very effective. Thanks for posting.

Also, when someone swings a punch at you, elbows to block, do a lot of damage to the attacker. Every punched someone, full on to have all those small bones in your hand shattered by an elbow? Very effective!

One of the best things to do in a street fight? Back up, and pull a gun. Avoidance! That is the best answer I've ever heard! Because of my first answer. Being nice to all people is best practice. They did that in the old West. You know why.

As a 3 time world championship Muy Thai fighter who has done numerous extensive training with the elites in Thailand and other areas around the world, I have a few comments to make about this video. First of all, his stance is impeccable. I know this because during my 2nd championship, an opponent who I KO'ed commented on my stance. This may not seem like a huge deal, but in Thailand, it is shameful to be defeated, and as such, most see even a regular officiated event as a power play. I have a fight coming up, so I can't complete the rest of this comment, but if I remember, I will come back to it and write down the other comments I wanted to make.

As a martial artist, it is important to note that once you put your feet in that "fighting stance" you are committing to fighting that person. I'm not saying this defense is ineffective, but there are still ways to defend yourself from a more neutral footing and requiring less overall skill of the defender and are effective against a wider range of attacks.

Joe Blow it’s called posturing and body language. By taking a fighting stance you increase the odds of actually coming to blows to almost 100%. As for the rest of your comment, you can believe what you like.
@slimbuttermilk
@slimbuttermilk 6 лет назад
This is very true, and that is why it is important to control the racing mind first, then subtlety try to control the situation by thinking clearly, look directly in the eyes of the attacker (using the other tools suggested in the video) and while speaking directly to the attacker to distract them, change your stance in a subtle way. Again you are correct, as one of the rules of war is that "mobilization means war". Not preparing for it, will not make it go away, and the initial stance in the video is one of the most unstable, and you are more susceptible to a take down, make a wider target, cannot throw your most powerful punch, and add infiniteum. Taking that subtle step back can create a little distance, giving you an edge and so forth. That step back may prepare you for the confrontation, and yes, may even signal that it is time to get it on. Who cares if that is construed as "throwing the first punch"? The thing that matters most, is who throws the last one.

This is all fine and dandy IF you’re both already squared up to fight. A lot of people will sucker punch and most people don’t have the reaction time to stop it, let alone get 3-4 moves in before it lands. I get reading the shoulder (if) you’re squared up. It’s just like guarding a WR/RB or guarding in basketball. They can’t go anywhere without their hips. If they’re not squared up, then you can’t even see their back shoulder half the time. You can also protect all those areas on your face with just your shoulder. I used to box and BHop came and taught us how to do it. I didn’t perfect it like he did, but it definitely helped me win some fights. The move you’re teaching is good, but I don’t like giving up my left arm in a street fight. I think you should look at the move again from arms down trying to calm someone down vs already having your arms up. Thank you though. It’s definitely worth practicing.

I've seen too many videos of people rolling round on the floor pulling each other's legs.The most effective way to damage your opponent is a hard punch or if you are in a situation where you need to run as quickly as possible is also a quick punch .It staggers your opponent if you land the hit and if you connect well you can knock them out clean.Stupid wrestling is not self defense.once your out there in the streets there's no rules most self defense classes don't even show how to counter block or evade an incoming punch.This video does that's why it's useful simple as.

Everyone's a street champ until they get kicked in the shins or front leg sweep catches them flat on their back and things turn painful. Also I subscribe to the Wu Tang Clan fightin' school: protect yo neck! The body/posture control is such high level from Mike that it took me three months of just leg/rope work to get even close to having such a solid form and control.

I watched this video years ago before I started being rough and rowdy and I garuntee you if u go into a fight with the expectation the other person is gonna move the way u want them to, you will get knocked out. Most people throw flurries in street fights, it’s not ufc it’s not mma it’s just people hitting people fueled by emotion. Be careful out there. Keep ur chin tucked, guard up, go for their body, learn how to wrestle. EXPECT NOTHING BUT ANTICIPATE EVERYTHING

That's what get you knocked out in a street fight. You don't just stand still, wait for your opponent's punch to land and do something, I have seen other self-defense videos that they explode in and control their opponent, and that works in real fight.

Prev E there is a difference between "the one who throws the first punch" and "aggressor". If someone is being too aggressive and provoke people into a fight, I think it is considered self defence. (Only when a fight cannot be avoided)

Bullshit, It doesnt work like that in a street fight people wont throw just one punch. and against a skilled opponent its too dangerous to block like that because that shit hurts, and he will probably move when punching and not punch that wide plus its much slower to block like that and you might get caught if he's fast.
@maIicemizer

I use and teach a similar blocking style and this will work a decent amount of the time. One thing that happens in street fights and even with inexperienced MMA, Muay Thai, boxers is the adrenaline causes people to become very linear with movement. Often times they are chest to chest after 1 or 2 punches. I like this blocking style because it puts you on the inside position, should you choose to plumb the head and go for knees or trips.
@de20
@de20 6 лет назад
Tike Myson 1. Who cares if it hurts. Just take the pain and deal with it later lol. I get head kicked all the time in the arms and forearms and they only give bruises, you arent going to sit down and start crying because of the pain right? Srsly, it doesnt hurt that bad. 2. Moving while punching usually lacks power because you arent grounded. Of course if the guy has training and is able to pivot his hips and all before leaving the ground then its a different story, but then again how is him moving gonna change anything about you being able to block the hook. 3. Untrained guys throw haymakers, they will be very wide, as if their arms are straight. And even if they arent wide, it still doesnt magically get past your block. 4. How slow must your reaction time be? If your hands are already up it is almost impossible for him to throw a hook before you are able to react. Mainly because a rear, uncontrolled, wide looping hook is the slowest punch in the world. All of my points are negated if the guy is trained and can school your ass, but if thats the case, no self defence video can really help you beat him

Keep in mind that these videos are never going to match a trained fighter. They are meant to use against the average angry attacker, and when the unreained fighter's adrenlin starts pumpong, they lose the fine motor skills and just come swinging. Something like this could be helpful against mst average people, who wouldn't think to rupture your liver, etc.

I heard Street Fighting originated in the towns of Bavaria … is that true? Supposedly that's why German is often spoken with an angry inflection. To "Blitz" someone was to jump out of a second story window, in a sort of ape like fashion, on to the back of an unsuspecting neighbor. My neighbor, Hans Von Gruber, says this the true origin of street fighting.

Actually when I was a skinny 18 year old kid... a really big drunk dude (who might of had a reputation in the area) came up he was giving my friend and I some weird vibes (motioning to punch, flexing his muscles) I was kind of in a trance but when I stepped aside and felt his arms while he was flexing and said “hey man you have really big muscles” he just walked away. Then the girl told me he was muttering creepy stuff, I didn’t notice. But use your intuition. I was in a bit of a trance , thank God there was no trouble.

Formula for commenting on martial arts tip videos for maximum ego boost: 1.) Open with "As a martial artist / trained combatant / experienced fighter..." 2.) Write a long post humbly congratulating yourself on your abilities 3.) Insert half a sentence worth of something everyone will easily agree on ("avoid the fight altogether if possible / don't get in a headlock in the first place / be aware of your surroundings") 4.) Wait for other people also hoping to stroke their egos to congratulate you on the agreeable half sentence
@Flashlegz
@Flashlegz 6 лет назад
As a blackbelt in various martial arts and winner of many competitions, I'd say your best option is to offer the aggressor a drink and some money. After doing so, it's important to say how you were in the wrong and that you have had a rough day. After befriending the aggressor bid him a hearty farewell and offer him a drink before leaving. After putting your would be attacker at ease and working his ego, get a hard object that's close at hand, like a pool cue or lengthy stick. When his back is turned torque your body as if to hit a home run and win the game for the team. There is no team here though, although I like to think of the weapon as your partner in justice. It's important to aim for the back of the head, you can hit his testicles when he is lying on the floor. I suggest using your foot to do this, as it is in closer proximity to the intended target after the initial strike. It's important to be aware of your surroundings, make note of possible escape routes and assume a sprinting position to maximise your escape velocity.

Growing up as a "Millenial" I can say no fight is fair. Everyone whose ever attacked me has attacked to kill (Even with their friends). There's no fairness mentality these days. You can't ease up thinking they'll stop if things get too extreme. They'll just leave you on the ground and run away. Respect is dead among the thug mentality of fighting that is today.

Street fighting is way different than a ring for sure. Notice how he said look at his eyes? Wrong. Get distance and look at his center mass, unless you want to get stabbed. If the guy is in your face, knee to the nuts. If he's back a few steps, low snap kick to the knee. Works every time. Why? Because he's looking at your eyes, not you leg that's about to ruin his life.

That’s easier said than done lmfao do you really think an inexperienced fighter would even try this? Their instincts take over at the beginning of a fight, you can’t reprogram the way a brain works on the go, it’s all about experience, not just training, actual experience is needed before someone can actually put any past knowledge to use

Seriously, I think a lot of training for people here should be to join the track team, then when they get in a real fight with someone who wants to bash their brains in for real, they can out run their opponent. I feel like a lot of people here either saw roadhouse or the karate kid too many times.

Jeffrey Dohnger I've been in too many fights myself really. To the point I have won from many people who competed even though I have never gotten far in martial arts training myself. Martial arts have little carryover in a streetfight, but that basic technique is something I've seen does work on the streets cause of it's simplicity. What I've seen works best is only learning the simplest techniques and perfecting them, learning to use them in many different angles/situations.
@JimmyPtheman
@JimmyPtheman 6 лет назад
tiger bend yes I've been in a few too. Its why I think muay thai works because it worked for me. Simple yet effective. The times I had to protect myself I used knees and once a leg trip. Shit happens so fast you dont have time to think, you just act.
@tigerbend1964
@tigerbend1964 6 лет назад
JimmyPtheman mauy thai perspectively has a lot of carryover in my opinion compared to other martial arts as most techniques are "simple" enough to remember and execute during a fight. What I mean by simple is that you can use it in many situation and don't need a huge setup beforehand to be able to execute them unlike many other martial arts like kung fu forms or japanese martial arts although some techniques also have a good carryover in my opinion.

Okay, a few points that need to be mentioned here. And I'm no cage fighter but I've dealt with several street attacks. 1. Staggering your feet is a good idea to also maintain balance. If they're faster than you, or come in with a shove before the punch, you'll get knocked right over if your feet are squared. Stagger them and bend the knees a bit. 2. Keep your hands above theirs. if your hands are at your sides, it can take a long time to raise them up to defend so if their hands are at their sides, yours should be at your abdomen at least. it their hands are at their abdomen, I prefer to have one arm across my abdomen and the other arm's elbow rested on that arm in a vertical position, like the thinking man's pose. You can explode from this position and defend. 3. I've never (fortunately) been attacked by someone that knows how to fight, they always either shove followed by an attack or most often, hurl a haymaker. And yes, watch the shoulders because that will indicate which arm is being deployed. This technique displayed can be very effective provided you're both orthodox and they're throwing a rear haymaker. But be careful drilling this sequence because if they throw a lead haymaker, you're going to get tattooed. 4. I personally prefer to move in. The worst place to be is where the punch is at full extension. In general you want to be just outside of their range or right in tight, If you move in and get hit with their bicep or closer to their shoulder, there is no power. Same principle with an opponent swinging a baseball bat. From experience, some thoughts I think should be kept in mind.

Appreciate the very sober comments about conflict avoidance and general good tips and simple strategy vs. the armchair scenarios of what you could do if you had 20 seconds to analyze the situation first in detail. Hopefully that first swing your assailant made wasn't to distract you from the knife they pulled into your gut with their other hand... Rule 1 in a street fight: you don't know anything about the aids laden junkie high on PCP packing heat and a knife with 2 buddies waiting to step in nearby who only appears to be some ornery person/drunk by themselves trying to pick a fight. Diffuse and walk/run away. Even if you "win" the lawyers will make sure you lose.

Worst move in a street fight. He's relying (through his lack of knowledge in a street fight) that the wide open target created won't be kicked or stabbed. Far too vulnerable.
