I've mowed for a PGA course. Keep your eyes up and trust a distant point in the horizon. Don't look down! Also, for super precise stripes, leave a 1/2 inch "holiday" and get it on the double cut. It will add dark border to each stripe. Make wide turns, and mow the same exact stripes every other day for a couple weeks.
@CameronForbes
@CameronForbes 5 лет назад
The trick I learned for straight lines is pick the point in the distance you want to mow toward, stare at it and drive right at it. Don’t focus on the overlap, because you won’t notice yourself veering off track. Those triplex style mowers are a pain to keep on track.

These might be newbie stripping tips but start on a section of lawn where you can make a short stripe and keep adding, super easy to make them straight when you start short. focus on the end of the pass it's easier to stay straight then to make a million small steering addjustments as you go.

I bought the cheapest mower from Wal-Mart a couple of years ago. It's not self propelled and I LOVE mowing, and always have. It makes decent lines and stripes for as cheap as it was.

Something I learned from some farmer friends of mine: Don't try and hold the wheel straight. Just pick a point at the end of your field (lawn), and constantly aim for that. I tried it on my own ride on mower, and I got much better results than I got with trying to hold the wheel steady. Just be sure that your reference point is not a cow, or some other moving object, that will result in some crooked lines :P

Smooth tires I am a equipment manager at a golf course and i run smooth tires on all my triplexes. Less destruction to the turf and grass recovers quicker. Wide turns also helps. And I would put smooth rollers on the front. Will flatten out the grass more( more stripe). You cut your yard at what I cut tees and fairways at. We range from .500 to .700. Or as low as .400. The mower weight itself is alot.i do believe smooth tires would really help you.

Used to mow here. Never used a mower like this, what I do to keep a straight line is look at an object or area at the end of your line. Drive directly towards where you are focusing. Do not worry about the wheel at all your body will automatically do it for you. You will have an extremely straight line. Once you have your first line. You just look directly at the end of the edge of your line. never look down to see how close your deck is to the line, this will ruin your line trust me. Always stay looking straight down line. Look where you want your mower to be. :) keep your arms loose and your brain will handle the lay of the land. you will probably being doing little constant lefts and rights.

I love your enthusiasm Connor. Your problem of line wobble is easily solved. Tripod mounted laser with a properly mounted sight fixture sturdily mounted on your mowing equipment (A mirror with a vertically cut void). Several mirrors mounted on additional tripods and aligned in cross horizontal plains at the correct spacing for you cutting decks widths and you will have the ability to make several passes over you lawn without the need for relocation of your base (laser). Once the initial setup is established, noted, and inspected for correctness mark and or note all of the locations for your mirrors including proper bearings and heights redeployment and repeatability will be relatively simple. In the Navy we referred to this as ACLS or automated carrier landing system. 3/4 mile call the ball.....roger ball. OR you could do it like my Dad use to. Snap a chalk line, mount a piece of rebar vertically to the side of your mower and align the rebar and the chalk line and mow. Water after you are finished and the line is gone....... keep having a good time. Dad always said if you are fortunate enough to find a job you like, you will never work a day in your life. God Bless, Sincerely Pops Fitch

I've spent too much time on a sidewinder. Couple things try shifting reels to left or right when going around stuff. So you're not doing same passes around stuff. Other thing is we run smooth back tire. Helps some with tire marks when turning and never turn the wheel when not moving. You probably could even run smooth tires on the front wheels also. We don't because we do banks with our sidewinder.

So I have have an epic stripe idea for the triplex/1600 combo... do a checkerboard like in this video, then take the 1600 and on one side of every stripe, skip a small space and go along side the stripe in the same direction with the 1600, making a plaid pattern. Ohhh yeah. Don’t kid yourself, it’s doable. My Bermuda doesn’t stripe well enough, but that KBG would do it!

To make straight lines, focus on an object in the distance and keep it centered. If you wanted to go crazy you could rig a wire up to that crossbar so you can make a reticle that dangles down into your line of sight that way you could keep a object in your "scope" while you drive toward it. I remember watching a show on TLC years ago about some hoaxers use this technique when making crop circles in corn fields. They would rig a wire reticle to their hat so they could make straight lines.
