With Pokémon Scarlet and Violet releasing soon, I wanted to take a second to look back through every generation in the series and talk about what I consider to be the best new feature in each. I’ve been immersed in Pokémon essentially my whole life, so I figured covering it was only a matter of time. See if you can guess what kind of player I am with my picks!

You can probably guess what I do and don't consider important in Pokémon with these picks. Two things I didn't address in the video that I'll touch on here. I wrote much of the script a while back so some of it's hazy, but I'm pretty sure I didn't go with held items because it was in its infancy in Gen 2 with very basic type boosts or the Exp. Share, and didn't mature with more strategic items until later generations. And breeding just isn't my thing, I know it's a major part of the series but I can hardly stand hatching gift eggs.

I think the two new types in gen 2 were also worth mention because along with the special attack and special defense split they helped to make pyschic types as a whole less impossible to kill

Unlike the Fairy type, I'm a big fan of the inclusion of Dark and Steel. The reason I didn't pick them for Gen 2 is their halfhearted introduction. They both only got 6 species each. For Steel, Steelix and Scizor are item trades (with only one Metal Coat) and Skarm is a version exclusive. Dark is even worse, with 5 species native to Kanto or Mt. Silver, meaning without trading, only Umbreon is usable pre-Elite Four. And to my memory, besides Jasmine, the Kimono girl's Umbreon, Koga's Forretress, and Karen, they rarely appear as opponents. But I'm sure competitively they made a bigger splash.
