Will we ever be able to hear all the jokes they cut out of norm's set? Apparently he made many more jokes that night that made David Letterman laugh hard... I wish we could see the uncut version.
Daves speech about comedians helping each other shows the big difference between dave and jay leno. I think that is one of those unwritten rules of being a comedian. No one makes it without help.
@@dizzy_derps I'm sure he can appreciate who his dad is. I think he just didn't appreciate that this is the one and only time in his whole life that he can throw a pickle at a stranger and face zero consequences.
@@dizzy_derps Pretty sure that kid is in college now lol...no doubt he appreciated his dad's humor. He helped pave the way for comedians today, especially on late night.
On a side note. Dikembe Mutombo is one of the most selfless men on the planet. He has a current net worth of 75 million, but has donated well over 150 million to build hospitals, schools, and clinics in Africa as well as his countless efforts to help improve medical readiness in the US. I know this is satire, but Mutombo is far more than a former shot blocker.
Watching "The Tonight Show" for the first time in a few years, I was disturbed at how it's host, Jimmy Fallon througout the entire show , appeared to want so desperately for his viewers, his audience to love him ...and i felt sad. Sad that for those of us who cherished great late night talk show tv of days gone by could now see this once great tv landscape become a cultural wasteland. It was then i realised how much I missed Dave and all that was great about him. His intelligence, his originality and quirkiness, his integrity, which he still continues to maintain today...A true genius..Fallon and all the rest , but particularly Fallon are absolute minnows in comparison
Kibble, I mean Kimmel, makes Fallon look brilliant. at least Fallon isn't an arrogant, pompous ass. Conan isn't as lame as those two, but all pale in comparison to Letterman, who himself would admit he's no Johnny, who was light years ahead of the rest
@@joe-vz6hx Personally, I find Kimmel a thousand times funnier than Fallon. He does project some arrogance in his sociopolitical views but who doesn’t? But otherwise, Kimmel is a very humble guy. Fallon is also. They both like each other and get along well.
Since David retired....late night talk show has never been the same. David didn't sell-out. He remained himself no matter what. Thank you David. We here in Canada love you and for one real reason. We, too will never sell out....
My favorite part of the video is 9:20 when Dave says to the band “You guys are fantastic by the way.” A band member replies “We love you Dave” and without looking to see who it is, Dave says “And I love you, Will.” Even when Dave was accepted by the mainstream and huge stars, he always felt more comfortable with people like Paul, Biff and Rupert Jee. He went out of his way to treat everyone with dignity, almost to spite the superficial world he reluctantly found himself King of. You can hear the love in Will’s voice. Pure class.
Craig "Turd" Ferguson was no slouch. Honorables, include: Greg Kinnear, Jiminy Glick, Arsenio Hall, Bob Costas and Several Species of Small Furry Animals, named "Dave", Gathered, Together, in a Late Night Cave, Pulling My Finger.
@@ihavefallenandicantreachmy2113 Arsenio was a painfully self aware kiss ass as a talk show host. I appreciate his vision but not his comedy or interview skills.
Just noticed the "TP" etched on Eddie's guitar. This was filmed less than 2 months after Tom Petty's death. Thanks to Eddie for his acknowledgement of one of the greats while playing the song of another.
So, are we all just gonna gloss over the fact that Bill Murray walked out in royal garb to a concert version of Henry the 8th and had a squire bring him a sandwich?
I glossed over it. Made a sandwich during that bit. You know how we all have that person that everybody loves and, for some reason, we just can’t figure out why? Murray is that guy for me. I have rarely found him funny. During “What About Bob?” I was rooting for Richard Dreyfus’ character in his attempts to kill Bob because he was so annoying and unfunny. Hearing about the hell Murray put Dreyfus through during filming only reinforced those thoughts.
@@shawnuel I also don't care for that film, but have you seen Bill in Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day? Those are brilliant performances that no other comedian could match.
Wanna hear my favorite Letterman joke? It was from many years ago on his show. He told a joke that fell flat and almost no one laughed. And w/o missing a beat he said "gee, the crickets are loud at the lake." Boom.
Before doing comedy, Letterman did the weather for some TV station; can’t remember which. One time during a weather report he noted “hailstones the size of canned hams…” He developed a cult following from that broadcast.
How is it possible that Dikembe Mutombo finished runner-up for this prize two years ago and has yet to win it? As I see it, there are only three possibilities. 1. The award committee keeps giving it to Letterman year after year, and Mutombo keeps coming in second. 2. The award committee has impossibly decided that other people have since become funnier than Dikembe Mutombo. 3. Racism.
Kris Kaiser Can we think this through because in a 20 minute video i think it’s ridiculous for people to keep singling this out: -Dave didn’t select who honored him. He ran down the list and thanked everyone. -I’m not a Schumer fan but whether we like it or not, she has a large audience and respect within an important faction of the comedy community i.e. Seinfeld, Larry David, Judd Apatow, Steve Martin. -Did you like anything in the video or you just choose to comment the only thing you didn’t like in a 20 min video?
What a wonderful bird the frog are, When he stand, he sit (almost) When he hop, he fly (almost) He ain't got no sense (hardly) He ain't got no tail hardly either When he sit, he sit on what he ain't got (almost)
I think it was partly a joke, and partly because Bill has really bad knees...for many years now, and just needed some balance getting up the last 2 steps.
I love and respect Dave so much. He has delivered so much truth in a way that the masses could digest it through humor and pointing out injustice when his genius mind spotted it and others couldn't see it. He is actually a very serious person about those things. Because he knows that only in America could he have been blessed with his success. He also knows not everyone possesses talents that bring in a big paycheck and that doesn't mean that those people don't matter. He knows it takes all of us to make it work that's why he always showcased regular people because they are important too. He is not without mistakes but he owned them and corrected himself, nor is he a person who never experienced injustice but he kept going. He introduced me to Warren Zevon too when I was a kid. I remember his last appearance with Dave. It was obvious that they were great friends. Dave knows how to be a great friend and that is a gift within it's self. He has been a great friend to this country too.
Not sure if I just cried my eyes out because of that beautiful song at the end, or because Dave seemed positively certain that a joke thief should win the Mark Twain Prize someday.
Yes! And House mentions Warren Zevon a ton throughout the series. And references his songs often. "Excitable Boy" is a song by Zevon and I remember House calling a patient that.
So Norm makes a stupid joke about the thing being a competition between Dave and a basketball player and then he frustratingly argues against the shit that he just made up. And that was his bit?? Then comes Bill Murray who's whole bit is to make fun of these sort of awards and honors for them not actually having any real value. And that's why these people are comedic legends.
Actually they don’t say, to use your exact words… “this award for most humorous people all the world.” Only you said that. There are thousands of awards given all over the world for everything imaginable. The answer to your question is right there in the name of the prize! 🤔🤣 THE MARK TWAIN PRIZE FOR AMERICAN HUMOR. It’s only existed since 1998 and is held in honor of a great American writer & humorist. This award is specifically for American humorists. Since 1998 the awards have gone to a diversified group of men, women and people of color. If you’re going to object to something, maybe do some minimal research a pick your cause more thoughtfully…I’m just sayin’.
Eddie and Dave became friends in the 90s when Dave kept singing the song "Black" by Pearl Jam every night and talking to Eddie directly. Eddie watched Letterman and actually got freaked out with Dave addressing him directly all the time and wanted him to stop, so he called up the show and they worked up a surprise for Dave. He ran in, sang the ending of "Black" and ran right back out the door. He came back in eventually when Dave started looking for him and called him back. Anyway, they kept in touch and became friends after that. Eddie also asked Dave to induct him and his band mates from Pearl Jam into the rock-'n'-roll hall of fame. So that's the reason he's there lol.
Eddie Vedder, the coward who searches for the nearest microphone to insult those who are thousands of miles away. In the very least, he should have his ass kicked.
Yeah well the prize is FOR jokes so... It's still a nice way to honor people before they are gone. Nobody goes around saying "Mark Twain Award Winner." So maybe you can chill.
