There were a few duds, but in general this show was excellent from the first season to the last.

Well judging by the fact that Betty White and Estelle Getty were the only ones nominated for Best Comedy Actresses through the entire run of the series, the character of Rose Nylund never got into any character rot.

She was the village idiot. That's what made her so loveable because she was so sincere and naive with it.

@@jandreidrn That's your opinion, it certainly isn't mine..She became too much of a cartoon character for me later on, Rose had some depth when I first saw the show as a kid in repeats in the UK, during the first few seasons..Baking her own birthday cake and talking to her deceased husband was very moving The St. Olaf jokes wore very thin towards the end

@@DaveyC95 There are plenty of episodes in the later seasons that show Rose with serious issues that made her show some depths, not just telling St. Olaf stories. Stuff like, Rose's observations on a local homeless woman in one episode, and her fears that she could end up like that woman if she can't find a job after losing Charlie's pension. Rose's line at the end of the monologue-"What am I going to do?"-hits hard, as she realizes that she, and countless others, are just as close to desperation as the bag lady. Another is the episode where the other girls give Rose a dog, Jake, because they know she's been sort of depressed lately. This is the time she's a hospital volunteer and Rose ends up giving the dog to a man whose wife has just died. And the episode when Rose fears she may have HIV, seeing Rose (who is usually very cheerful and optimistic) feeling hopeless, terrified, and cynical is very sad.
