Waste of taxpayers' money and the time of young Singaporeans. Foreigners should do NS if they want to work in Singapore for more than 3 years. I am still trying to figure out how Patrick Tan, son of former Defense Minister Tony Tan, got a 12- year deferment of his National Service. Why was this allowed? He should have returned to Singapore to do his NS before continuing to do his PzhD. Did MINDEF also arrange something special for him that served as his basic military training (BMT)? There should be greater openness and transparency on all NS deferment.
