Game of Thrones proper was one of the best shows ever made and Blackwater is one of the best episodes in the series. It deserves some love so here it is. Apologies for the varying audio quality, this is a supercut of my first two videos.

Blackwater gets outshined in the eyes of most fans by the bigger battles in the later seasons, but it remains my favorite of all the on-screen battles. This and the battle at Castle Black are probably the only times when both sides have characters that we don't want to see lose or die.

@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116tbf none of the warfare in any of the seasons makes sense. Look at black water, the troops are just running at the wall with no formation, just eating arrows for fun. The Lannisters have essentially all of their troops outside of their massive walls. On top of that, defenders in real life usually did a whole lot more. It wasn’t uncommon for defenders to actively make their walls bigger/taller if they knew shit was gonna go down. My biggest gripe in the entire series is that everyone seemingly uses swords for battle. Spears (with a backup shirt sword) dominated warfare for most of history because they work so well in a formation and keep distance from the enemy front line. The loot train honestly had the most reasonable troop placement out of it all. They actually used a shield wall with spears, and held their ground while archers went ham. In real life they’d absolutely not have lines so thin (iirc just one troop thick) but they didn’t know they were being attacked so whatever. GRRM is a great world builder, but even the battles in the books are pretty rough to read. Hearing about people fighting single combat in the middle of a massive battle makes me want to not read it at all.

D&D truly gave a shit about George’s vision in the early seasons and it shows. They wrote so many episodes that are critically acclaimed that they were responsible for (at least with their writing) I always rewatch the series and wonder how it could’ve went so wrong with so many bangers under their belts. I feel like season five was the beginning of the end for them. After the backlash to the braavos plot line, but with astounding ratings in lieu of it, They realized they can write whatever they want without any repercussions from a fan base that largely didn’t read the source material.

@@soulbrother1143 I have to disagree on every single point you made. 1 a spear is perfect for a dwarf. It gives him reach in combat dwarves lack reach. Spears are naturally armor piercing especially for chain mail plus spears can get into those vulnerable cracks in armor. Spears are probably the most simple and easiest to master of all weapons. It takes far less training to master a spear over a bow or sword or axe. That's why spears have been the main weapon of foot soldiers for thousands of years from the stone age to fire arms.

"And I've seen other writers try" I think this is the most important thing when discussing Weiss and Benioff. They, by accident, did a WAY more thorough job ruining all the the characters in their show than other writers who have TRIED to ruin the characters in their stories. Like at least turning Luke Skywalker into a sad old man who's completely given up after he did a total 180 on literally his entire worldview from the original trilogy, for NO reason, at least the writers did that on purpose. They wanted Luke to suck so we'd have an easier time accepting Rey, his replacement. But for all the faults of that, at least they INTENDED to ruin Luke. They had a task and they did it. And as horrible as that is, it's more respectable than Benioff and Weiss just deciding to ignore GRRM and refuse more seasons from HBO (Benioff likely using his daddy's influence to ensure other writers didn't get to take over), rushing to show to its end and believing they were just so amazing that it was all going to be fine despite the insane hurdle they just put in front of themselves.

I’ve always wondered who that was that came into the pub or brothel or whatever with the hound and sat with him. What kind of absolute killer must this guy be that the hound would want to hang out with him ever, let alone right before they were to fight for their lives?
@SaintWombo
@SaintWombo 9 месяцев назад
Great question, and i’m not entirely sure of the answer. The Hound technically isn’t a knight but he probably still needs help with putting on his armor, so i’m guessing the guy following him around is his unofficial “squire” who helps him with his gear. I think the same guy brings Sandor wine later in the battle.

Neil Marshall directed two of the best episodes of GOT, "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall". He did a lot of great horror movies and thrillers like The Descent. A proof that series also need good directors.

The first 5 were the reason 6-8 got so much hate. Blaring, immediate contrast. I too, am still in pain because when I first started watching, I remember falling in love, to got’s becoming easily my favorite show ever. The character development, the politics, making character/plot armor a joke, and these actors who I’d never seen before, killin it causing me to become fully entrenched in the world of Westoros! Then fast forward to season 6-8, 7-8 is by far the worst) and all of what made me fall in love with the show was gone… I can remember, slowly realizing that d&d had no fucking clue on what they were doin while watching helplessly, this great show go to shit, to the worst ending of all time. I still have so much hate for the writers 😂(who btw have a Netflix movie coming out soon so go leave a horrible review)! Not surprised that they’re dick riding another book that’s actually finished so they don’t have to do any real writing. I’m sure the critics will say it’s their grand return but if you actually look at their work. GOT exposed them for their lazy, stupid writing. They literally hit the lottery getting the game of thrones series. Anyone that’s doesn’t know should look it up.

I hate that they turned varys into a "good guy". Its way more fitting for the Story that he has Personal intrests and ambitions that clash with other characters. The "for good of the realm" thing is just so vague and bland. The faegon Story has way more depth to it and a lot of the Things varys does and say in the early parts makes way more sense
@SaintWombo
@SaintWombo 9 месяцев назад
I disagree. I like the book portrayal but i appreciate them trying something very different with the character for the tv adaptation. I also wouldn't call him just another "good guy". I really like that he retained his commitment to prioritizing his own safety "I'm no hero" and "the big fish eat the little fish but i keep on paddling" (this does get screwed up as early as S4xE10 which i didn't appreciate) but in the show it think it provides a compelling conflict for his character. Him throwing Tyrion under the bus during the trial for Joffrey's murder was a stand out moment for me. One that we simply don't get in the books because that friendship never existed.

@@SaintWombo ok you can see it that way. But I also dont like that varys constandly tries suck tyrions dick as if tyrion was the best politician ever. In the books that makes sense becouse varys wants to manipulate him but if varys really wants a good leader he has way better options than tyrion

Seasons 1 through 4 are mostly flawless attempts at a faithful adaptation of the books (and near perfect actual television when you remove my bias about the relatively minor changes and one major change they made to the plot). A non-book reader would never know to criticise any aspect of the show up to that point, and that's perfectly fine because what is on screen works. By season 5, as you said, we start to see cracks in the plot. We ignored it because the previous seasons were so incredible and season 5 still did a good job in thrilling us with spectacle and drama. By season 6 things are starting to come apart, where the drama is starting to take a back seat to the spectacle - and by season 7 there's almost no drama at all.

“The Long Night” could’ve been a whole season. It should’ve been a whole season. On my rewatch of GOT, this and episode 4, “Bells” are the only 2 episodes I skipped. The conquering of Kings Landing took 20 minutes, WTF. I can’t wait until they remake GOT in about 10 years and it goes 12+ seasons.

0:44 what kind of cinematography is that in HOTD, a grey fog over most the screen cant even see anything. Same at 0:47 and rest of that show. They are clearly intentionally making it bad. But why?
@thekrakensdaughter
@thekrakensdaughter 8 месяцев назад
hotd is just so bad in cinematography and dialogue(the worst part of the show for me) it really feels like the praise it gets is just from being associated with GOT and milking people nostalgia from when the show was good

I mean, odds are Cersei *will* blow up the sept in the books also And i think its not really accurate to say tyrion makes all the right moves given that he spends the whole time making enemies, thinking hes clevered than he is while Varys is making himself indispensable to everyone without making any of the enemies that Tyrion is
@SaintWombo
@SaintWombo 9 месяцев назад
Yeah but I’m certain it won’t be so disastrously handled when it does happen. Fair enough on the Tyrion point. I’ll be highlighting his many missteps when i cover S9E10. Ur totally right, to say all of Tyrion’s decisions are spot on is inaccurate. I was trying to briefly illustrate how much better Tyrion was at navigating the Red Keep in comparison to Ned. But i should have been more precise about the way i worded it.

29:03 I derived a different implication. It felt more like he was implying that he's having a harder time figuring out how to appeal to his daughter than fighting a war. He doesn't think Sansa is being difficult. He knows she's reasonably upset. He just doesn't know how to quell her. It's a frequent theme in Ned's story that he's not much more than a solider. The books go further into it but Ned was never meant to lead or be Lord of Winterfell. He was only ever meant to be a soldier and die on the battlefield. In comparison, raising a family and taking care of daughters who are far from home and pissed at you is pretty damn tough.

Earlier seasons are not fantastic if you have the books to compare and know about the behind the scenes idiocy of the producers. Season 01 is great, season 02 and 03 are good, but could be better with more competent showrunners, 04 and 05 are passable, 05 onwards is just laughable.

In a way, minus huge crimes like kingslaying, the Hound works like Jaime. Both see the hypocrisy of outward honor but crave authentic honor and hate themselves so much for their current positionality and being in the violence. They know its all disgusting and are uncomfortable with the normalization of this as honor
