Love the video As long as you ran the engine before the oil and filter change there is nothing wrong with installing an empty oil filter. The residual oil is sufficient as long as you don't start it and take off at full throttle. It is actually more dangerous to prefill because most people prefill the filter wrong. The big hole in the middle is where the filtered oil is picked up and sent to the engine or the clean side of the filter. If for any reason there are some contaminants in the oil or that got picked up in the prefill they flow straight into the engine. If you want to prefill you need to plug the middle hole and fill through the outside holes. Totally understand the argument for prefilling and if that's what you want to do go ham as long as you do it right.
Just a suggestion..if you use ramps you can get most of the old oil out, if you don't you leave about a quart in the pan due to the baffling. Using the ramps the oil will drain for quite a while if you let it, it never entirely stops. For those with skid plates still on remove them and due yourself a favor..Good Video.
I use a makeshift piece of cardboard funnel creased in the middle laying on top of the skid plate so oil drains into the drain pan,, I always say I'm going to drill holes into the skid plate but I never have yet :)
My LMM is at 304,000k miles. I use Mobile Delvac, Mobile 1 filter, don’t prefill the filter and change it between 5/10ish k miles. It uses maybe.. maybe 1/2 to a qt of oil between changes. No oil pump tick.
Great video, thank you for making it. I'm a new 1st time Duramax owner. I bought a 2013 chevy silverado 2500HD 6.6L LML Duramax, it has 144,760 miles on it. I'm going to forsure get the magnetic drain plug, and I'll probably use the WIX oil filter and the T6 Rotella 15W-40 oil. I bought the truck from a chevy dealer and they changed the oil and transmission fluid with filter, also changed the fuel filter, flushed the cooling system and flushed the brake fluid. I'll need to change the transfer case fluid and both F & R diff fluids. It freezing cold here in Minnesota so those will need to hold on till spring and warmer Temps. I'm also going to install the 100gpm air dog lift pump. I have no way of knowing if the CP4 is still factory, I'm finding no record to support if it's ever been changed or not, so I'm adding Lucas fuel treatment to the fuel hoping it lubricates the CP4 until I can afford to get the CP3 conversion done. Once again, thank you and wish me luck. Any advice you can offer on CP4 care would be very appreciated.
Yes i would obviously rather have the CP3 and may do it down the road but clean diesel and a lift pump will be nice added security. Water is what will grenade a cp4.
Use good diesel. I only pump Loves or Pilot diesel. The fuel cost more but it’s better diesel. Truck runs with power and your protecting your fuel pump and your injectors.
you know why the oil goes black instantly its cause that stock oil pan keeps about a quart of dirty oil in it after the drain because of the valley in the middle of the pan
Those mitsumoto drain plugs have horrible reviews for breaking off in the hole. I will go the route of putting a rare earth magnet close to drain area.
Pretty good vid..BUT, you definitely over torqued that plug. You can see at least twice you clicked, then pulled passed the click and clicked again. Just one click is all you need, all that extra is pulling beyond torque and is unneeded. If one wants a verify, gently pulling a second click is acceptable, but that was way beyond needed. For 15lbs I would suggest a smaller wrench also, not as apt to pull passed torque. It gets more critical with smaller fasteners. Good vid.
My 15 lml loves Rotella t6 with a k&n oil filter.ive tried everything an the engine is smooth an way quieter.a lot of other oil give me that type writer tick for about 1500 miles.with rotella t6 it's gone.
Honestly , spend your money on a good cummins. I have both, and when I load my duramax it feels so heavy , the cummins is a beast, it hauls so much better than duramax . And it sounds so meaner
So my oil cap says 15w 40 but I bought 5w 40 for my 3500. Does that matter or no? Only got it because the guy looked into the computer and said to grab it
Hey not to say anything negative but doesn't the duramax take 10 quartz oil capacity? I always use two gallons of rotella and then two quartz of Lucas oil stabilizer
When I change my oil in my duramax I let my oil drain over night. My oil is clear weeks later. Maybe if you get the old oil out it won't be black 30 seconds later.
5w40 and 15w40 is about 20 degrees difference in startups. If your in sub zero cold weather use 5w40 but if your that cold you would plug er in so he stays nice and warm at night
Not the best filter or oil.. Literally 10qrts of Rotella is $50 which isn’t bad, but just sign up as an Amsoil Preferred Customer. I paid $58 for 11 quarts of Amsoil HD diesel oil, and the filter Ea052 for $15. Which this filter is one of the very best, and backed by plenty on DMAX forums. In total I paid over $80 but, I’m also getting something proven and repped on. Vs Rotella which is known for air pockets and bubbles forming in the oil. I’d pick $10 more as a quality insurance. And now I can get Amsoil for my JZ at 25% off, or anything else I play with.

Wrong!...you need to drain everything the oil pan and filter at the same time for an hour!! Then bump 1quart of clean oil. Let that drain for 30min. And then put all together, plug,filter and clean oil...that's how you do an oil change!!!!
Man...i change my rotella with cat oil filter at every 5k and its just as clean as I when I changed it...u should think about clean oil changes 🤔 somethings wrong if your oil is dirty after the first start up... mishimoto drain plug is trash!!! It Stripped in my oil pan after the second time I took it off....reason its hardtop take off is because its about to strip. I can't handle wannabe gear heads 🤦♂️
The sooner the better imo. Clean oil is so vital. Diesel oil gets very sooty as well. Extended oil change intervals are just marketing bs. Why chance it with your engine when oil is so cheap in comparison?
