I've always oil undercoated our vehicles. The oil undercoat helps protect the frame and body from rust when our road salt is on the Pennsylvania roads during the winter snow season. In this video, we discuss bar and chain oil undercoat, and Fluid Film. Fluid Film has a lot of great uses, but I've found that it may not be the best undercoating for vehicles. I talk about pricing and tips for undercoating your car or truck. Best oil undercoating. #oilundercoating #truckundercoat #fluidfilm #roadsalt #purplecollarlife

Absolutely. I think it's protected all our vehicles greatly. Many vehicles the age of ours are totally rusted out in the rocker panels, the wheel wells, and the tailgates. And here in PA, rust through any body panel makes it fail it's annual inspection. So for us, the oil undercoating is a very worthwhile investment. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Been spraying Bar and Chain oil for over 25 years up here in Northern Vermont. It does work great. I heat it up in a Presto Crock Pot with some bar wax for the high splash areas. For the inner box sections like rockers and doors, don't add any wax and spray it on hot...Be sure to apply it inside all enclosed areas...

Greetings from northern Vermont, rust capital of the world. Up here, they use the worst of the worst for melting snow and ice. Been using B&C oil for over 25 years and it works wonderfully. Cars rust from the inside out so soaking all the inner box sections, rockers, inner fenders, inner frames etc with oil saves the day. I will tell you that motor oil , ATF, grease etc also works well. I heat the oil in an electric crock pot and spray it on hot with a little wax on all outer exposed metal. Touch up every year and the vehicles will last!! Great video! Thanks for posting!

@@justincase9638 Keeping water and Oxygen off the metal is the objective. Road deicers accelerate and fuel the corrosion process. I like B&C oil because it's cheap from Walmart and it works great. Best time to spray is in the spring and early summer. The warmer weather expands the metal and the oil "creeps" much better.

Excellent advice! I've seen some vehicles so rusty, they literally split in half. They fell apart. And you could poke holes in the fenders with just a finger. Obviously a huge safety issue. I keep hoping they'll come up with an alternative to the salt. Here, we use brine (pickle juice) but I'm not sure if that's any better. Thanks for sharing, Chad! 🙂

Good evening Sir, I undercoat my vehicle twice a year. The first time is during late winter or early spring and I use only SEA 30 Oil to counteract or stop the salt effect on steel since oil will stop the corrosion effect and also since the salt as been building up under the car during all winter long. The second time will be at the end of the summer when it is the driest ( DRY and still hot ) I will use 1/3 synthetic grease and 2/3 SEA 30 oil for sealing the surface for the long winter and why during summer, the oil will penetrate further more than cold season and the grease will also be carried with oil and keep the grease wet and not going to dry out. Now, any types of soaps is corrosive at certain level and chainsaw bar oil does contains a lots of soaps,,, Yes all your vehicles look very nice and get these rusty spots fixed fast 🙏😉👌 In Canada we run un salty road for sure, but the good things salt work above or around - 14 c so under that temperature salt is frozen LOL !!! So they put mixed sand instead 😉👌 Great cameras under view shots and test too 👌😉💪👍 OUTSTANDING informative video Sir Cheers 👍😉👌🍻

In my area using oil for undercoating is illegal and they won't pass the vehicle inspection. You're basically limited to the lanolin based oil like fluid film, NH Oil Undercoating, Rust Check, etc. I like NH Oil because it "creeps" very well to hidden areas that don't see direct spray like inside frame rails, rocker, doors, etc. Nice video and thanks for sharing.

I found fluid film is good for inside door and body panels. But fenders and areas of underbody that get a lot of wheel spray . The fluid film washes off in a few weeks. I experimented mixing oil and wax . Applied hot to wheel wells , frame and underside works fantastic. ! The wax is enough to keep everything in place. .it’s pliable to the touch. But doesn’t drip . Going on 4 years since using it and been fantastic.

Either FF or Oil will do the job. But I agree that when you chose one, you should stick with it. They're both just as effective in my experience. I use lanolin on mine because I've found that it's a bit more sticky and less flowy during the initial dry-out period and I've grown to enjoy the smell. But I tend to replace the undercoating yearly as I DIY it and part of my process is to fully clean the underbody in spring and do a proper inspection. I know its better for the vehicle to leave it on, but I find enough issues before they become major problems to make it well worth it for me.

I just used Surface Shield for undercoating my new F150. When using a lanolin based product, it is important that it is applied directly to bare/painted metal and not on top of any existing oil or wax coatings. If you've ever owned a GM truck, you know that their wax undercoating will chip and flake off on its own, and it is an awful product to re-apply when needed.

I've seen a side by side comparison for over 15 years now on the exact vehicle. One that has had oil done and the other that has had fluid film done. My one uncle's 2004 Honda Odyssey and my other uncle's 2004 Honda Odyssey. They got into this huge argument about it years ago when they both bought their vehicle. It's actually been very comical for the rest of us to witness this argument over the years. Well they both sold their vans a couple years ago (each with over 250K miles on them) and each went through upstate NY winters every year. This culminated in a professional steam pressure washing of the underside of both vehicles, and my father having a special tee-shirt made and a really cheesy trophy purchased online. Both were in surprisingly good shape after all the years, but there was still a clear winner. Hate to break it to you, but that winner was clearly fluid film. The one that was doing oil undercoating clearly had some rusting spots all throughout the underside and at the bottom of both front doors and at the bottom of the rear door. Nothing horrible , but clear rusting kind of like your doors and in some tighter spots underneath. The fluid film van looked significantly better and that one also had nearly 30k more miles on it. No rusting doors or anything. The only spots the looked questionable were a couple areas that it must have gotten blasted off by road spray or something. Same areas were even rustier on the other van. Anyway, there was a clear winner. They both bought new vehicles (F150 and Honda Pilot) and they're both doin fluid film now. I just wish one of them would have done surface shield so we could have had another comparison, but I doubt they'd both be around after another 15 year test, but who knows, they didn't use different products anyway. Cheers.

Thank you for sharing this! That is truly a scientific test of one versus the other. Very interesting how it worked out. I feel like the Fluid Film washes away faster - but maybe it also penetrates better? It's definitely more expensive. Surprised the door is rusting even after being oil filled yearly. I use trans fluid yearly (October) in my doors. I chose fluid film initially but just switched to Surface Shield made by Blaster. I used the Blaster for my yearly touch up last October. Didn't really need a lot because the fluid film from a year earlier was still mostly there. The Blaster doesn't seem to wash off near the wheels like fluid film did. Very good product so far. One of the "undercoating experts" on youtube says oil doesn't work. He's wrong.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and commenting! I can see why the doors would rust after 7 years. It's all below the seal strip gasket at the bottom of the door. I think that probably some salt/grime gets into the holes where the gasket mounts, and even the oil can't protect it with our long winters and spray up from the tires. I'm wondering if on these key areas (wheel wells, door bottoms, tailgate), I should be treating them twice a year - once right in the middle of winter.
@Deucealive75

I'm not sure exactly what the brand of that undercoating that is used on our vehicles is. We have a professional apply it each fall. The oil applications over time create a layer on top of the metal. Dust, dirt, and road grime stick to the oil over time. That creates a layer almost like paint or a type of rubber coating. In some areas (like the frame beside the rear wheels shown on my Ranger in this video), water spray "washes" away that outer coating layer.

Thanks, Paul. It actually still has the nut - but it was missing the chrome cap over the nut. These Ford lug nuts are actually just a steel nut with a chrome tin cap over top. The caps fall off, or get water under them and expand/split. This year, I replaced every single lug nut with real, solid lug nuts. It wasn't cheap -but I was tired of the issues with those OEM lug nuts.

looks like you had some hard coating put on the vehicle. It would not be surprising to peel that back and find the metal is rusting beneath it. Check out the videos of Ziebart etc. treated cars and what a disaster that turned out to be. The oil/lanolin products need a repeat application each year, but they work to prevent rust by preventing the salty water from getting to the metal. They never crack but oblate with time.

Great video, Chad. So, this is more of an oil/liquid, and it remains pretty much a liquid? And, it wouldn't be considered more of a rubberized undercoating? I saw a very interesting video that showed how the rubberized undercoating actually traps the moisture behind the coating and never allows the frame to dry out. If you have a minute, I would interested to hear your thoughts on that video. It is titled "Rubberized undercoating will destroy your car". And, just to be clear... that isn't what you are suggesting, correct?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 года назад
Great question. No, I'm not recommending that. Though I have seen some people use something like Line-X bed liner on the rust-prone areas of their vehicles. Sometimes this is after the rust has started, to try to keep the panels of the vehicle from rusting further. I've never tried doing that, but I have heard that it can help the vehicle from rusting as quickly. The stuff that the mechanic puts on our vehicles, I refer to as "bar and chain oil" because it's got that same consistency - tacky, thick. But it's not actually bar and chain oil. It's some type of undercoating. Over time, it does get that look like a rubberized coating - but it's actually just multiple layers of sticky oil. One big tip is to get the car done as quickly as possible, before any contaminants have the opportunity to get into the metal. When the F350 was new, I had it done within a few weeks of getting the truck. I wanted to get that coat of oil on the frame and all the body panels before there was a chance for other stuff to get in there and start rusting it away. Thanks for asking!
