"Your Money Or Your Life" is my latest personal finance obsession. Unlike Rich Dad Poor Dad (I did it read in college as well), which focuses on growing your income to be above your expenses, Your Money Or Your Life invites you to take a closer look at your expenses and see if they really need to be as high as they are. It's about doing some guilt-free reflection on why you spend what you spend, and if all of that spending is really giving you joy. The basic idea is, if you spend money and it enriches your life in a truly satisfying way, that's money well spent, no matter how much or how little. But if you spend money and it doesn't really make you happy (like buying expensive things to impress other people who aren't paying attention), then it's money wasted. And through that lens, the amount of money you need to be happy is actually less than what you'd have thought. I think Your Money Or Your Life is a good book for someone who wants to be financially conscious but also prioritizes being a careful consumer of the earth's resources and values community.

Great list by Rose I’d add one of my personal favorites being T Harv Eker’s The Millionaire Mind book that is a def must read no doubt! Most importantly though is to not get caught up in just reading and rereading these awesome books that Rose mentions along with the other great suggestions in the comments. Taking action every day and developing skill sets along with consistent improvements in particular areas along with those book recommendations will get you further faster. And although not a personal finance or investing book as a foundation I recommend How To Win Friends and Influence People.

Thank you so much. Your description of your parents mindset is an exact mirror image of my parents mindset. “Go to school! Go to college! Get a good education so you don’t have to work hard like I have!” And they don’t realize how hard that is and how much pressure they put on us because we don’t want to let them Down. Of course, we want them to be proud parents so they know all of their sacrifices were not done in vain. Eventually they will see how hard it truly may be for some. Either way I am grateful they pushed me and supported me and I wouldn’t change a thing. So I just want to say thank you for this wealth of information. I had been thinking about about my future lately regarding investments, but I had no idea where to start. My education background is in healthcare management and military training. Your video has given me an great wealth of information as to where I should start. Many blessings to you and your family. I am looking forward to watching your other videos and future ones as well. Some food for thought books: The Intelligent Investor, Benjamin Graham One Up On Wall Street, Peter Lynch Learn to Earn, Peter Lynch The Millionaire Next Door Becoming Warren Buffet": "America 20/20" by Stansberry Res "Unshakeable" by Tony Robbins "Real Money" by Jim Cramer: "The Intelligent Investor” People need certain books at different times of their lives. Some valuable first steps are: 1. How to develop new habits. - Napoleon Hill Definiteness Of Purpose, "Unshakeable" by Tony Robbins. 2. Tax avoidance maximizing tax qualified sheltered accounts - Traditional IRA, 401K etc... 3. Forced savings and pay yourself fist mentality. Utilizing automatic withdrawals into your accounts. This maximizes dollar cost averaging minimizing risk. 4. Maximizing ETF's for focused investing while maximizing diversification. Vanguard ETF's have very low expense ratios. Take time following Napoleon Hill's plan of Definiteness Of Purpose and writing in detail your short and long term goals to achieve an Independent Financially Free life style. You have to weave the new habits/mind sets into the very fabric of your personalities. "Winners Form A Habit Of Doing The Things Failures Don't Like To Do" - Earl Nightingale. Write a Mission Statement, defining your end result and the steps you are going to take to archive it. A Financial Mission Statement will make things become very real to you. This is how you bring your creativity into reality. You must take Action Now. Continual second efforts, taking action immediately, using the scarcity mindset. I totally agree with you personal finance in general. It is woefully undertaught at all levels of our society. It should be a mandatory class to graduate from any high school. It's not rocket science but it's not knowledge you are born with either. I also agree with you about I Will Teach You To Be Rich. It is one of the best personal finance books I have read in years. Yes, it may be unconventional. But it all works. And his main points are 1) simplifying you life and 2) focusing on value NOT price. I have been a firm believer and practitioner of #2 for decades. I have finally started embracing #1 after years of resisting and being "old school". It was the single best decision I made in 2020. He is big on automating everything (for example paycheck direct deposits in, rent and retirement are taken directly out. It's hard to spend money if you never even see it.) However, I am going to disagree with on anything Kiyosaki. Yes, I know about his success. I simply don't understand it. I think he is completely overrated. He says that you should buy income performing assets if you want to become rich. This is NOT a genius revelation. How thinks that buying clothes or cars or anything else that depreciates and throws off NO income will make you rich? Anyone? These are LIFESTYLE decisions, not wealth creating decisions. And his contention that your house is a liability not an asset is flat out wrong. Take a look at the trend line for real estate over the last 30 years. It's UP. And there are numerous ways you can have your house throw off cash or convert it into cash. Not to mention that you have to live SOMEWHERE. Another book that I would add to your list are any of the early Ric Edelman books. He has kind of gotten off the rails lately. But his early works were the best personal finance books I have ever read. Start with "The Truth About Money". (I was not a fan of the Truth About Your Future.) I have wanted for a long time to become proactive towards my financial future and my children's. I have read Rich Dad a few years ago and knew the importance of creating wealth. I still procrastinated. I was getting ready to get ready. That was my big problem. After watching a few of your videos, now a consistent viewer and sub, I opened up my Roth IRA and 529 funds for my two children. I had an old 401k that was not being funded and am now in the process of rolling it over to a traditional IRA. I couldn't roll it over to the Roth because the plan was funded with pre-tax money and I would have had to pay taxes on the conversion. But I can at least have some control over it now, fund it if I wish, or just focus on the Roth with my current sources of income. Not sure if you ever made a video of "Getting Ready to Get Ready". It would be a great topic to explore. I suffered from impostor syndrome and I think most of us have some level of this when considering putting our money to work. Thank you for your videos. You've made an impact.

Robert Kiyosaki‘s „Rich Dad Poor Dad“ was it for me. It turned my life around. I grew up with mindset that is so similar to yours, that it’s scary, Rose. I thought as well, that it was my fate to work until retirement, then eventually get sick and die. The other thing that was hammered into my head was:“Investing is only something for the rich people“. But due to the fact that I have never fit into this society at all because I have a birth defect, I am often tired and have headaches. So I had to figure out something that could prevent me from dying poor. That’s about the time I got my hand‘s on „Rich Dad, Poor Dad“. I have read other books too, but they are all written in German, because I am Swiss. I‘ll list the authors here. Maybe there are translations by now, I don’t know. There’s: Gerd Kommer Gerald Hörhan André Kostolany Harry Büsser

I like those Kyosaki books. My main takeaway from the books was how his perspective on debt. I don't think we'd have the term "good debt" without him - people tended to see *all* debt as bad, rather than leveraging equity. I will say I've always thought he discounted the "E" quadrant too much. I have investments in real estate and the stock market, and my early investments were funded by steady income from my day job.

My case herewith. 1. Drove used cars, had a roommate. 2. IRA, later Roth IRA. Side gig, SEP-IRA all in stock mutual funds. 3. Health Savings Account at Fidelity with stock mutual funds. 4. In a high income year, bought variable annuity (no contribution limit) 5. Side gig grew, have one contractor/ employee, now small income for life. While you are working, save and invest for capital appreciation. Later, use that money for income so you don’t need to work. $500/month invested for 33 years can be $1 million.

@@sheepmanleader I don't in fact; with real estate you make money either by renting out some of your property or by waiting till it appreciates. I don't recommend precious metals because new technology can always make gold recovery easier, there's plenty of gold on earth just that a lot of it is inaccessible due to being dissolved in water in such small quantities as to be irrelevant or locked in residual ore which is not yet profitable. There are whole heaps of "slag" outside of S. African mines which do have gold but in small and thus unprofitable quantities - given current technologies. This is without mentioing the idea of gold on the moon, mars, or asteroids. Those who tend to invest in gold also tend to a conspiratorial mind set they are often bad investors however, precious metals generally are inflation proof. Just don't expect them to appreciate in real value, unlike real estate (there are always more people so demand for real estate will always increase, but its supply is limited, living off world is completely unrealistic due to radiations).
