I’d say DS1 before DS3 just because a lot of the story elements and some callbacks are only significant if you played the first. But otherwise, solid!

Same here. DS2 does get a couple references, but the most noticeable one is in the dlc.
@fanohhh

That would be a solid order yes! I placed DS3 first based on Gameplay mechanics being more similar to Elden, but DS1 would be a good choice too. The player would just need to adjust to the simpler gameplay after playing Elden Ring

yeah I strongly stand with OP on this one. I got into the series with DS3 and, while it was the greatest experiences i've had playing a video game, the story was kind of a headache for me. Even after watching Vaati's video on the lore of DS3 bosses I was left with a lot of questions like: "who tf is Priscilla and gwyn and Ornstein???" But after finishing DS1 Ive come to really appreciate the callbacks to the original story when replaying DS3. Realizing that the Soul of Cinder was esentially the character that you played as in the first game, the Chosen Undead, makes the final battle truly special.

My older brother enjoyed the "dark souls is hard" memes back when DS1 was new. He eventually found out DS2 was comimg out and had that (on our oldest brother's Xbox 360) as his first game. He swore by it and recommended it relentlessly to me, but I was like 12 at the time and was grinding out high round Zombies runs in Kino der Toten (good times in its own right), so I didn't give it a chance. Then, he left to serve a mission. A few months of his absence made me miss him a lot, so I booted up DS2 and made a gaunt, fish-eyed, pale ginger man that specialized in Dexterity in his honor, and I was hooked. I played through the original DS2 dozens of times without even knowing about ADP. That Christmas when we got an Xbox One, I rebought DS2 as the Scholar edition and enjoyed the DLC. I was there, too, for the launch of DS3, and its immaculate DLCs, fleshing out character after character of every build persuasion, even completing a SL1 run, all thinking about how much my older brother would love them. He came back after 2 years, and did. and it helped us come closer together. But I also kept hearing about Bloodborne, and how good it was. Having an XBone I had no way to access it, so I resolved to work at Subway and save up money for a PS4 Pro, which I did, and that, in turn, led me to rebuying both DS3 and DS2 to play on this superior gaming hardware. While all this was happening, I also rode the hype all the way to Sekiro, which absolutely floored me in every sense. In the back of my mind, however, I always thought about DS1, whose remaster had recently been lambasted by the community for its underwhelming delivery. I saw it as an opportunity to experience the thing that got us (my little brother included, now) into this rabbit hole of games. Later I got my hands on a PS5 just in time for the launch of Elden Ring. I have plats in DS3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, and I just need Sunlight Blade for DS2's plat. I still haven't even given DeSR a shot. It's been a wild ride.

Don't listen to the haters, Ds1 is the best game in the entire series for many older players. Not only because many started with that one (it launched the Souls series into mainstream popularity), but also because it is simply so much more unique than all the other later entries which seemed to try to recapture that lightning in a bottle but could never do it, and instead rode on it's coattails (Ds3 I'm looking at YOU)

I started with DS1 in this series, so this may be biased, but one of the things i truly fell in love with in this series is the atmosphere and aesthetic of the games. If anyone is like me in this aspect, I implore you to play DS1 first, because (again, just for me) it was the most significant in meaning

This is a great video, and your order makes a lot of sense. The only thing i would personally change is, i'd place Sekiro straight after DS3 and Bloodborne, it may be a controversial choice but i have a few reasons for this, it has imo the most fluid mechanics in the series and somewhat feels more accessible compared to DS1 because of its more linear level design, more polish, frequent idols to rest at, the ability to jump and it acts as a welcome break from the standard souls formula.
@fanohhh
@fanohhh 2 года назад
Thanks a lot ! I see what you say, and actually thought of that for a moment because of the more fluid gameplay as you said, but then all the remaining games would be very similar visually and gameplay wise and i figured it would feel a bit dull If played one after the other.

I think you need to find the one that makes it “click” for you, and that game will probably end up your second favourite if you play all the soulsborne games. It’ll make it click, and then you’ll love it, then try the other games and find a favourite. For me, DS3 made it click. I tried DS1 first and hated it, tried DS2 and hated it, tried DS3 because I knew people loved these games and wanted to know why, and finally it clicked. Went back and tried DS1 and loved it, same with DS2 (the misunderstood middle child of dark souls). Finally got a PS5 and got Bloodborne (which actually became my favourite game of all time, the previous game holding that spot for almost 20 years!), Demon’s, and Sekiro. So glad I managed to platinum them all right before Elden Ring released. For a complete newbie to the series, I’d say the best play order is ER, DS1, DS3, DS2, DeS, BB, and finally sekiro, of course missing the PS exclusives DeS and BB if you don’t have a PlayStation although they’re still VERY highly recommended.

I love seeing everyone else's experiences in the comments. I personally went to DS3 immediately after completing Elden Ring, and was shocked to find that it felt easy to me. What I'd previously considered the hardest of the Souls trio became almost trivial, to the point where in my first 2 hours I'd beaten Dancer and given myself a great mid-game setup. I think it has to do with how similar they are. Both are some of the fastest (combat-wise) entries in the series, with a similar set of enemies and semi open-world nature. Granted, DS3 isn't actually open world, but there are points where the paths diverge which makes it feel like going after a different pair of demigods in Elden Ring, and then clearing out the others once your build is setup. I also tried DS1, and due to its slowness it feels just as challenging as before, because I can't take any of the fast combat techniques I learned from Elden Ring and use them.

I fee like powerstancing was better in dark souls 2. You could mix any weapon (with adequate stat allocation). The greatsword/sword and dagger as an offhand for example was a great! I have a bit of a disdain for how you can only powerstance weapons of the same class because it feels limiting especially after they already introduced the mechanic! Dark souls 2 powerstance was definitely more polished than Elden ring in that perspective. Also, my order after Elden Ring would be: Demon Souls, Dark souls trilogy (in order), bloodborne, then Sekiro. The reason being that you’re playing them in order and that allows you to see how fromsoftware advanced over time. And for the Dark Souls trilogy, definitely play that one in order so that way you can see the lore as it plays through and enjoy it.

I actually completed Dark Souls 3 specifically so I can prepare for Elden Ring (of course also because I enjoyed the game). When Elden Ring first came out I was low-key terrified when I heard streamers say this was even harder than Dark Souls 3, I ended up way overpreparing; I followed a get op early guide, followed by cleaning 80% of the Limgrave dungeons. Let’s just say, when I got to Margit, the fight lasted less than five minutes and the outcome was not in his favor (I even almost no-damaged him). Little did I know this would be what the rest of the game looked like for me, with most of the bosses requiring me 1-5 tries, with notable exemptions being Rennala, Malenia and Radagon with Elden Beast, all of which except Rennala I still beat way sooner than is considered normal. Basically, the fact that Elden Ring is an open world game, can be exploited extremely hard and while the bosses are harder than previous Souls games, your opportunities for growth are even greater.

I probably even experienced this more than most because my friends would usually eat at 5-6PM while my family ate at around 7PM or later, so I would skip their dinner so I could eat at home an hour later. My journey DS1: complete noob. Lived behind a shield. Needed a walkthough to complete the game. DS2: intermediate level and things finally clicked. First time I put the shield away and dual wielded 2 greatswords. I LOVE DS2. DS3: enjoyed it but preferred the slower pace of DS1 and DS2. I like DS3 a lot but it doesn't have a special place in my heart. Sekiro: After mastering DS I walked in overconfident and got frustrated. Once I stopped playing it like DS and learned to deflect it became my favorite game of all time. DLC or Sekiro 2 please!! Demon Soul: first soulsborne I played completely blind. Using all my knowledge from previous titles I managed to do it. Played the PS3 version so it was a bit rough around the edges and I enjoyed it in the context of the one that started it all. Elden Ring: the culmination of everything FromSoft has learned since Demon Souls. Truly breathtaking and stands on its own as an incredible achievement. I can't say I love it as much as DS1, DS2 or Sekiro but I can gaze at it and see what an incredible achievement it is. Bloodborne: not yet played and I can't wait to play it soon. Just need to find someone with a spare PS4 lying around haha.

Meanwhile, I heavily recommend DarkSouls 3 to new Souls fans. Its easily my favorite among the 3 core souls games. Between the refined combat, places, creatures, and surprises, its just a really fantastic entry. I even just love the novelty of the player moniker, "Ashen one". Now I didn't buy Demon's souls until just recently, and... yeah, its a bit rough, but not without its perks. I've gotta get more into that when I'm more 'done' with Elden Ring.

Sekiro was the game i had the most trouble getting into too. I didn't really got a feel for the parry system until the third time I started all over again. I like it yes, but not more than the core Souls games, still worth a full playthrough at least once ! Are you playing the original Demons Souls or the Remake? Its not as fluid as DS3 or ER, but I think the Remake plays good in comparison. But The original is difficult to go back for sure

I'd argue DS3 is literally the only soulslike that you shouldn't play first out of the trilogy- you should at the very least play DS1 before DS3 purely because of how well the two stories click and the references DS3 makes to DS1 characters and locations- especially the final boss; I dont think i'd have gotten the same goosebumps from hearing its music if I hadn't finished DS1 first. Even if you skip many of the character questlines from ds1 or just miss them, the conclusion to ds3 is only satisfying if you atleast played through most of the journey leading up to it. Unfortunately it doesnt make many references to DS2 aside from a few armors and weapons, and that one tree in firelike shrine, so i'd argue that one is optional. Even if you do use the point that ds3 is most similar in combat to elden ring for those transitioning, pretty much all the games' combat feels different and players just need to adapt, although yes, ds3 is still probably most similar to elden ring than, say, ds1 with its much slower, methodical combat, but honestly i'd still argue the order should then be: Elden ring > Bloodborne (optionally) > DS trilogy starting from ds1. I would just say sekiro can be played whenever since the combat and mechanics are so vastly different. Might as well not even classify it as a soulslike.

I'd say the order is DS3 cuz how similar it is to ER -> DS1 so you get a feel how it all started and so you can look back and see the bits DS3 called back on -> Bloodborne cuz its so dam good a the most similar to DS1 of the games left -> Demon Souls remastered ideally because its such a good polished remaster and the last two you can play if you really want to see quite different takes on the 'souls' formula, ideally DS2 then Sekiro and back to ER for another playthrough :P

DS1 - DS3 - Bloodborne - Sekiro. DS1 mostly for the story and DS3 next so you can enjoy the continuation of that story. DS3/BB/Sekiro in a sequence is good gameplay wise because the combined gameplay of these 3 are the wellspring that ER gameplay drew from. The pace, the increasing movesets of enemies, the jumping, the items and so forth. DS2 and DeS are like the sort of experimental ones that differ a bit from the others, so just play them last.

So that's not a new feature they put into DS3 because of Sekiro. I think Sekiro after is a good pallette-cleanser, then Dark Souls, then to Dark Souls III. Unless you really want to see the beginning. In that case, Demons Souls, if you play the original. If you play the remake, I'd say throw that in after the DS trilogy. I wanted to play the whole souls series before elden to prepare myself because I never got into them. Manged to finish only ds1 because I didn't estimate how enjoyable the game was ( finished it like 3 times ) But the moment I got into elden I realised I should forget everything I learned in Ds1. First time in ds1 I've played an absolute poise tank, wielding the mighty Zweihander. The second playtrought I played a samurai and the last one a pyro. When I switched to samurai I tought I was faster than light ( and I was compared to my tanky boi xD ) When I started elden I felt that my reaction times where in slow motions while the enemies where snorting coke in between fucking my ass up. I got used to it and managed to finish elden after about a month ( still want to do another playthrough because I beat most bosses with the help of the mimic, nothing wrong with that, but I never felt accomplished for some reason ) Switching to ds3 from elden was a piece of cake, finished ds3 in about a week and ravaged everything solo. NK was my wall, he made me get gud, after him yeah Friede Gael Midir where hard but beatable, NK felt like an overpowered anime villan at the start. Now I am playing ds2 and I was honestly pretty disappointed, leveling adp helped but still, it feels off. Ds1 and Ds3 while different still feel like souls games, ds2 idk. I killed the last boss of the base game and I went online because I thought I missed the actual last boss or something because everything was so easy. I died more times trying to get to the bosses because of the weird enemy placements. I hate how delayed everything is in the game, after every input it feels like there is a pause for some reason. I heard the dlc are good so I hope they redeem the game.

Additional Info: Elden Ring dodges are actually more like DSR(1) dodge-timing wise but the game's pace, speed is more like DS3. Most of to DS3 bosses other than some ESPECIALLY some exception bosses, roll timing is mostly based on rolling as fast as you can (not to be mean; roll spamming), you still have to time your dodges but the dodge timings are not as punishing as DSR or DS2, which makes DS3 also a welcoming entry point! also Man you don't know how much I'm glad for you not trashing DS2 although it is as not good DSR(1) or DS3 Guys really don't skip Dark Souls 2! It has the most bosses in the Dark Souls series and many areas where all of them are unique to each other, although it is unpolished it is defienetly worth playing. 👍

Great list! The only thing I disagree with is Demons Souls at last. It does not require a console - it can be played flawlessly on a PS3 emulator. Said emulator also has working multiplayer servers hosted by the community! And it runs at 60fps! The ps5 version is nice but having the emulator option makes it accessible to PC. I feel like DS2 should be the last place choice considering how... unique it is.

Why ds2 before 1, think the star wars cut, play ds2 blind, ds1 will fill in the blanks ( kinda, the only a souls game can) and 3, take everything you learned and move forward to that awesome dlc

They're all great games, but I'd savour either Bloodbourne or Dark Souls Remaster for a climactic ending to your exploration Bloodbourne has some of the best atmosphere and gameplay in the series and Dark Souls can't be beaten on world design

I've played all those other souls games, and there's no way I could justify suggesting someone play them over Elden Ring, or after.

I tried a bit of Elden Ring but no - I knew what needed to be done. Bloodborne Platted. Demon's Souls Platted. Dark Souls Platted. Dark Souls 2: SoTFS, Dark Souls 3 & Sekiro to go. Apparently Bloodborne is hands down the hardest. I'd reccomend starting there - love it or hate it, best to start with the roughest part of you journey. It's the game Souls Veterans remember DS1 as. Honestly - I'd give DS1 & 2 a skip. They're not up to standards & are in desperate need of a Remake - similar to the one Demon's Souls got. I'm sure DS1Remake in particular would make the world go Boom. In any case - NEVER SKIP THE DLC! The DLC is essentially where the best bits of every game are hidden. Not training wheels - the game throws what it's got at you & often holds the best items & equipment as a reward. Most DLC bosses are where the "true game begins."
