Hey Darren, another good video here. I happen to agree with you on where the halation plugin should be placed in the node tree. The film emulation process is not emulating each step in the process in order, so the idea that it should be the first node, would only be a valid point if you were emulating the process and recreating each step. So if that was the case, then you would only be using printer light and setting exposure and you would be done with it. I asked our friend Walter his opinion on where the halation should be on the node treeand and his response was: “Imagine that you put halation at the beginning and then you darken the window light: the halation is now not coherent anymore with the light that comes from that window. So, for me, halation (and grain) should be put at the end of the process you do to the shot as if the shot was capture in that way, before thefinal look/lut. It has both philosophical and practical implications.” The pushing it too far to show it on youTube, is a point in itself, considering that most of us are grading to use on youTube halation and film grain strength is always a consideration and problem. Being subtle sometimes means no one sees it. Don’t have “Dehancer” but it looks to be something to consider, Nice to see you explain such complex plugins in an easy to understand fashion. Really great explanation of halation and how it works.

Hi Jim Well I'm pleased to hear that. I spent days testing and breaking footage so was surprised to then see YT videos putting before the CST - not that that would change my mind - my thoughts are always my own!! My results were always better after. So, here you get my viewpoint. Might need to do a few easier tutorials next though as I've been busy again....this one took up a LOT of my schedule and RU-vid only likes it for about 24 hours!! Dehancer is so worth the money IMO. The brand new negative film grain in 5.3.0 looks great too. Hope you have a good weekend. Darren.

I always use the Dehancer node last - it seems the film grain (which it does very organically) only makes sense there - especially if you are doing any NR -the grain has got to mess up the NR algos! And it seems the image should be balanced/exposures adjusted etc before film emulation curves...

Hey guys, Glenn here. I noticed something interesting when messing with a node tree today. I've taken on board the advice of working in the wider Davinci Colour Space with two CSTs. I tried dropping halation on a node right before the second CST (which takes it back to REC.709) and then on a node directly after instead, to see if there was a difference. When in the node before it seems to effect mostly highlights, but in the node after it seems to effect the midtones. Where would you say the best place is to place the halation node (note that I'm using the Halation effect that comes with Davinci)? Cheers.

I love your work, Darren, it’s absolutely top notch and a cut above anything others are doing in the resolve tutorial space. I’d love to see you do a deep dive on colour management and CSTs. I’ve noticed for a time you were using the colour management but have gone back to putting the CST in your node tree… exposure and a bunch of other things seem to behave better “under” the CST. I’ve been flip flopping personally, I liked being able to preview my media pool with the CST applied using colour management, but some things just do seem to behave better under the CST node. I’d love to see you talk about what you like to do before/after a CST and why, and how the DaVinci colourmanaged environment doesn’t give us quite the same flexibility.

Color grading is a good bit of science as much as it is art. It’s probably my weakest area in video editing, partially because my eyes struggle a little with certain shades red and greens so I have to rely on my scopes. But a lot of work I do has tight deadlines, so mostly boosting the saturation, contrast and fixing any white balance problems has been about the extent of my skill set for coloring footage. However, with DaVinci I’ve really enjoyed the flexibility (although a bit overwhelming at times) it gives me to do things I couldn’t do in previous editing software. I’m still striving to learn new things and want to improve.

Thanks for this video! I've been using the halation node ever since it came out and I came to the same conclusion you did about where to put it in the node tree. But since I saw a lot of RU-vidrs saying to put it at the beginning, I was second-guessing myself. Hearing your perspective on the topic made me feel a lot more confident in my eye and taste as an artist, since I respect you so much as an artist. Also, I've been thinking about buying Dehancer for a while now, and I have a narrative project coming up that could possibly make really good use of it. But in terms of halation I think I've found that I'm happy with just the DaVinci halation node. I'd be more interested in the film emulation side of things. Especially if Dehancer is able to do negative emulation too, in addition to print emulation.

Great video. I think that if you keep the halation effect too low, you don't even see it. I like it to be more obvious. Hi Daren thankyou, Great QUESTION: It would be great to see a video on this... I have been trying to create a color block out over black and white for days.. Its a fight scene, the good guy is in full color and the bad guys are in black and white. I use the Magic mask to mask the good guy... the issue is matching the color between scenes. I thought I would use the Main node with color grade... Then into two parallel nodes, one B/W the other color, each feeding a serial.. One will mask on the good guy, the other inverted to mask the bad guys... from here it goes wrong, The sum throws a blue cast over the B/W and the full saturated node is in the yellow / orange spectrum... if this interests you, I can upload the project and a couple seconds of files for you to see... Cheers, thanks for your explanations, they are they best Ive seen..

100% agree with what Darren says here. This is very close to the way I work, and I would do halation or digital filtration towards the end, maybe in the middle of the node tree after all the basic correction and level changes. Dehancer, Halation, Scatter, and Filmbox are all worth candidates, each with pros and cons -- for filtration only, I vote for Scatter. Film emulation is a murkier subject.

Hi Marc. Good to hear from you. Glad you agree about the position of halation. Ive seen a few YT videos now where its placed at the front and didn't work well for me. Ive heard scatter is a great product. I'll dive more into film emulation in a future episode. Thanks for taking time to comment. All the best, Darren

Are you sure the results are 'better' / more realistic doing it after a CST? It's effect is something that happens on acquisition so to emulate it, it should be scene referred so it can operate on linear data internally which is why it has an input space setting. Otherwise the effects it has on diffuse white is near equal to a light source visible in the camera.
@DarrenMostyn

Hi Shebbe. Im basing this on MY personal findings and Im happier with these results. I did a lot of testing!! Spend a long time like I did and see how you get on. It's my personal preference for sure. How it should be is not really documented.

@@shebbe you are welcome. Life skill in general - Too much info out there ! Make your own decisions of course based on information you gain in colour world, but test it and then test it again and then, I recommend you test it on other footage too. What works for you and your client is best - maybe not always what you heard from someone else. My practises here seem to go against other videos Ive seen on RU-vid with halation, but I'm confident with my findings here. Unless you have a mentor, then listen to them of course...I may not be the perfect tutor but happy to share my findings. All the best.

Not sure if emulating the process and only caring about one aspect is relevant to a digital representation. In the film days - grain was also in the negative and then in the print, then added to all that was noise in the scanner, and so on. So saying that something was done on acquisition would only be valid if you then emulated every step in the film process before digital. If that was the case to follow the procedure order of operations, then the ISO and filmstock would come first as well and the next thing would be printer lights and setting exposure and the colorist would be done. So the order is as Darren found - a visual representation of a film process as a choice of a visual inspection, is probably as good as any for making that choice. Darren's end result decision as to where it is on the node tree, coincidently matches the opinion of Walter Volpatto as well. I asked Walter personally the same question, and he came to the same conclusion. So the dozens of big cinema features that you have seen that Walter has graded - he prefers in a digital process to have the halation at the end, because baking it in too early potentially can be destructive and incoherent. ( his words ).
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 2 года назад
@@JimRobinson-colors Interesting to hear, and Walter is also a good friend of mine - I have not asked him about this of course. My halation tests here are my own and not based on researching 'youtube' videos but doing my own research on footage. I can honestly say I've learned a lot more from youtube than I expected over the last 18 months but my channel was started to give honest advice based on my broadcast real-world experience and to give viewers a choice who they listen to on RU-vid. Follow your instincts...you'll know who's advice is good and solid. It may not be mine, but that's also fine - there are enough channels out there to find the ones you like - I'm here for those that want it! All the best, Darren.

Wow didn’t expect Dehancer been mentioned, I thought it was a local thing 👀 Pavel Kosenko participated in dehancer plugins development, also got an amazing book “live diginal” in russian about how to handle digital image so it wouldn’t look like film, also they worked on RPP photo color tool for processing RAW images, and STILL in 2023 I mainly use RPP because it gives 100% of control of how raw images are been processed (if you use it you would know that no commercial raw processor is close to how RPP develops raw images. Its hard to use it for video color processing (not impossible, I had a good results with it), but mainly its a raw processing for photos. Also RPP was kinda alfa version product, but still work’s amazingly (but its mac os only). I tried dehancer on early stage of development and for some reason I was not really happy with results, but I think I should give it a try now, I guess. We also discussed halation a lot on a color grading course from film school… If only I could get a remote job as a colorist 😢 in county where I live now there is now market for colorists (they don’t care about any video production at all, I have to work shitty job to be able to have a place to live and food). How it is going in English speaking countries? US? Canada? Is it possible to move and get a job as colorist or people simply not care about picture quality in 2023?

Why bother with CST’s? Just use the Resolve Colour management (especially if just working with RAW), it’s far quicker and does just a good as any CST! I definitely think for the purpose of this demonstration, CST was just excessive information.

If you have a workflow that works for you then this is ideal as you can take my workflow and apply to yours so shouldn;t affect RCM or not. I like to show my workflow for transparency and to deliver a full tutorial as to MY preferred settings. It's the most important part of the workflow - what settings I am using are important IMO. If people prefer I just do RCM workflow and go RCM instead of my actual workflow then I'm happy to do too. Let me know in the comments - always listening! Darren.

@@DarrenMostyn I prefer the CST nodes (with groups) because RCM doesn’t always get it right. Especially if you get a wide range of camera sources. Easy enough to save grades into Power Bins.

I was wondering if you have any thoughts about using Resolve’s color managed workflow (what I use with Dehancer Pro- using the Wide Gamut Intermediate as the input to the plugin) versus using Dehancer’s built in camera profiles? I prefer letting Resolve do the CST work as it is more flexible when mixing cameras…
