There is actually a better Pokemon for Falkner, but it's really rare. The 1% Dunsparce in Dark Cave has access to rage just like Totodile, but it gets STAB on it. It also just has far better stats across the board.
They're still deadweight because of their godawful movepool in gen 2 ( ESPECIALLY Donphan my God , at least ursaring has headbutt/shadow ball/ 60bp dig )
From my experience, Lapras is the best Claire counter. It gets ice beam by level up before the level cap and is very tanky. It only gets better in HGSS since shell armor means you don’t have to worry about sniper crits from Kingdra.
I love Lanturn and Quagsire. It’s sometimes hard to choose between the 2 for a water type when making my team. But even having both are good since they have solid 2nd typings. Also in Crystal, Lanturn can learn thunderbolt and ice beam via the move tutor, and quagsire can also learn ice beam via move tutor
Oh man, this reminded me of the mono-Water run I did as a kid in Crystal. Went with a lineup of Feraligatr, Vaporeon, Quagsire, Lapras, Lanturn and a flier. My sixth Water-type tends to be Starmie.
The only time I ever tried to specialize as a trainer, I went water type in Crystal for this exact reason (although I did give myself a Graveler for electrics and some sort of flyer for grass, in addition to the natural water dual types)
For Pryce, I recently found out that the best Pokémon to use is Forretress. It resists roughly all moves his team uses, and if you give Forretress Headbutt and Rock Smash it’s a easy Sweep. I two shotted Seel, three shotted Dewgong and then Piloswine fell very fast with Rock Smash since it had no effective move to use against Forretress.
Raticate has been intentionally getting status conditions inflicted on itself since Gen. 2. Edit: Ursaring, too. Two different Pokémon with Guts just so happen to take advantage of being statused before battle in Gen. 2.
@@TarosTheVoidhe was redeemed in gen 2 compared to gen 1, also like how onix got an evolution. Made the 2 faces of rock types actually good in gen 2, well steelix is steel type now, but I think you get what I mean lol I mean geodude wasn’t bad, but too many weaknesses in vs gen 1 gyms
I'd say it's a toss-up between Jynx and Lapras. Jynx is decently fast and has good special attack but is fragile and has a less than stellar movepool, whereas Lapras is slow but has decent offensive power, good bulk, and a great movepool that includes Thunder by TM and Ice Beam by level-up.
@@reillywalker195 true, but the problem with Lapras, is the fact that he can be slower than the Dragonair with Thunder Wave. Otherwise né would dominate this match up 100%
I always liked using Umbreon on Clair's Kingdra, that pokémon can tank anything that doesn't hit for super effective damage, especially if you use a Substitute-Rest Umbreon.
I’d like to add for Clair, Normal type Pokémon I have found definitely thrive. An early caught Miltank with Return/Body Slam and Milk Drink does offer a lot of solid damage similar to Ursaring. Plus the bulk of Miltank and the speed allow for more consistent chances to heal or KO with normal stab moves.
You're really sleeping on Lapras, which can be obtained after beating Morty and has high bulk, decent physical and special attack, and a great movepool consisting of Surf, Ice Beam, Icy Wind, Blizzard, Thunder, Body Slam, Sing, Perish Song, and Confuse Ray. Lapras is my go-to Pokémon for Clair and Lance.
Not to mention I think Lapras gets Psychic as well if I'm not wrong? Someone correct me on that but if it retains Psychic in Gen II/IV it'd be good against Bruno and Koga as well
Are you considering adding a "challenge mode" a la BW2 to make boss battles more challenging for hardcore players? (i.e. giving each gym leader counter strategies for common threats)
Eh...It doesn't actually make them harder though really. The level increases are purely cosmetic. For example. Iris's level 63 challenge mode Haxorus has the same stats as her level 59 normal mode haxorus. The only difference is slightly better AI (but it's still vanilla pokemon game AI, let's not kid ourselves), and the "boss" trainers have perfect IVs, regular trainers don't have have the perfect IVs. They just "higher level" pokemon that have the stats of a lower level pokemon with the orignal IVs.
Im almost at the end of getting the full form dex (ive got 7.8% left to obtain) and i just started this game to get celebi and a few others. The fact that this video came out the same day i started playing crystal is amazing and is a huge help ❤
I would like to mention since Slowbro came up that you can actually use the same strat idea for Whitney. I mention this specifically for those who are doing Nuzlockes even, because you might WANT to keep that Guarantee Abra you got in Goldenrod. However Slowpoke can be forced as your encounter in Slowpoke Well simply by forcing Zubat and Geodude on earlier routes, thankfully an easy task. You can Curse setup on Clefairy quite easily as it offers no real challenge, and once you have enough Attack/Defense ups to break through all the physical moves, The low speed means nothing and you will wipe out Miltank. I also tend to throw Headbutt obtained in Ilex Forest onto the Slowpoke for this very reason, and you'll be well within level cap for the fight to have Curse
the more time you give to Clefairy the more stupid shenanigans it will accomplish. Give it four turns and it rolls Thunderbolt for sure. No idea how, but it always happens
@bvd_vlvd while I've never been unlucky enough for that to happen, those are still random chances to get messed up by Clefairy. Even with a Thunderbolt, if you are to level cap you should be clear to survive at least 1 given the HP of your average Slowpoke
Kadabra is def my fav from Gen 2. High speed ice and thunder punches on it can sweep Lance's 3 Dragonites and Gyarados with ease while being very useful in most other fights too.
@@jordankek24That's the thing though. You can't trade on emulator, so you'd have to cheat it in. And if we let things be cheated in because you could technically trade for it, everything enters the conversation
@@jordankek24 it's not that big of a deal to me if I miss out on trade pokemon as they kinda make the game too easy. Kadabra is already great and if it evolved on top of getting the 50 percent xp boost from being a traded pokemon it would be busted.
So, that Raticate strategy has to be why it got Guts as an ability. Anyway, that was very interesting, to see how uncommon mons might be very good against tough fights
Why is your Fergator at level 30 while the other mons were shown to be 35? Due to a lack of resistances, and thanks to the magnemets being slow and surf being powerful, I've never had a worry about being outspeed or not killing.
Feraligatr can learn Dig, too, which it doesn't get STAB from but has sufficiently good physical attack to make use of. My standard moveset for Feraligatr in Gen II consists of Surf (for STAB), Ice Punch (to counter Grass, Flying, and Dragon Pokémon), Bite (to counter Psychic and Ghost Pokémon), and Dig (as a useful field move as well as for coverage against Electric-types and Pokémon with low physical defence).
Hi really enjoying the content, Dr. / Professor Bulbasaur is awesome btw. I am curious about when you said, Pokemon Crystal is the primary version of Gen 2, do you mean, the definitive edition? I would argue Gold and Silver are the primary versions and Crystal is the secondary one, but we may have different definitions.
Onix is way more consistent at beating Whitney's Miltank than Machop. The best strategy is to Screech Miltank to set up huge damage she can't heal off with Milk Drink and use Dig whenever she gets Rollout going. Onix's ridiculous defense and favorable typing make it nearly unbeatable with that strategy. Giving it a Berry makes it even more consistent and so does catching a female Onix in Union Cave and not using the male trade one from Violet City.
golbat/crobat with lvl30 wingattack is my go to for beating chuck, also 4x resisting to fighting attacks and way more accessable than scyther or exeggutor since zubat is everywhere to be found in the early game
I beat mortys gengar with a lvl 6 ratatta that knew dig and attract. It was my last mon and I didn't expect to win but that little lady pulled it off! I used her for the rest of the game
Ok this project is clearly the focus, and I'm here for it, I can't wait but also can wait I understand it takes time *takes breath*. What do you reckon will come next, if anything? I'm kinda thinking, Fire Red / Leaf Green or applying some/most of the changes again to Heart Gold / Soul Silver? Am curious if you have any idea or interest in a project after this one?
Who would win: a stinky rat or THE thing that hunts your dreams? Also, nice detail on adding the pink bow on the bear. Very useful video if one were to do the achievements in Retroachievements that require you to beat the gym leaders at certain levels.
I think during the chuck portion you should've mentioned how you can get a Leaf Stone for Exeggcutor at that point of the game bc i was yelling at the screen when you said that lol (and then found you can technically get one before kanto)
For the last gym, Jinx is also another solid option if you wanted to use something else beside alakazam/kadabra. You can catch it on the ice path on the way to blackthorne city. which is convenient.
Alternatively, if your odd egg hatched into Smoochum. A note though, if you want Psychic stab on Jynx, you might need to hold off evolution until LV37 so it can get Psychic. Psychic + Ice Punch is a nasty combo in lategame Johto.
In crystal u can get a growlithe really early in the patch of grass next to the sudowoodo..great mon to have if u pick totadile...always get the schoolboys number past the park nd get that fire stone...boom early arcanine! Always my go to fire mon...power nd bulk nd good ol extreme speed
Jinx (ice path) and Electabuzz (via curiosity egg elekid) are also valid hard hitting ice punch/ice beam user for Claires Dragons. I love my elektrobuzz for its speed and coverage. thunder/ice hits everything at least neutral, fire punch for coverage against Jasmine. Basically as if pikachu and elemental 'kazam had a child. Sometimes I catch a Bellsprout early and get a Weepinbell/ Victreebel and can get a nice Sleep Powder into Growth into Razor Leef sweep which is also a valid Strategy. Sleep into Syther into Sword dance into Slash/ Wing Attack is also pretty good, as probably every other boost move as well. Pink Bow is also accessable early on route 29 at tuesday from Dietlinde after defeating Falkner. Instead of Ursaring Tauros and Miltank are also a hard hitting bulky Normal Types which usally Headbutt/ return/ bodyslam + Rest/Milk Drink throw Claire's Team. Water Types as Quagsire, Tentacruel and Lanturn also usally covers the most vanilla stuff you encounter.
Recently did my first hardcore nuzlocke in hgss, and my team’s ace for Morty was Pre-poisoned Guts Bite Raticate… Whoever thought that would be Gen 2 (pre-Guts) cannon???? lol
For Claire's gym I personally used my level 40 quagsire with surf (by HM), earthquake(learned lv 35), amnesia(learned lv 23) and ice punch(purchased from goldenrod store) If I set up 3 amnesias it becomes an absolute unit against Claire's special moves (also its ground typing is immune to thunder wave which is handy). It sweeps all three dratini with super effective ice punch. And for kingdra a few STAB earthquakes should do the job. Also for paralysis, I made it hold a paralyze heal berry because this can be annoying
I think the best Pokémon for Morty is actually Umbreon. Sure, you have to breed your Eevee and evolve it before 16 so it gets Pursuit, but ghost moves do practically nothing to Umbreon, and it’s unaffected by Gengars dream eater. Plus, you don’t have to waste your dog TM on a pretty bad Pokémon like Raticate
Hey smith could you make Swinub available earlier, like I kinda wanna use it but it’s not available until you have 7 badges. Can you make it about 3-4 gyms where you can get one
If the game corner move tutor would have been accessible from the start things would would have been so much more fun having flame bolt beam access even if it's basically 80k per move
I destroyed Clair with a Lv 33 Scizor. I used Agility, then Fury Cutter'd away from the start against Dragonair. It walls much of the Dragonair's attacks as it stacks up power with Fury Cutter, and by the time you reach Kingdra, you OHKO the Kingdra. I think after the first Dragonair it's able to one shot everything else, as long as Fury Cutter doesn't miss.
You kind of use Haunter against Chuck. Gastly can be found early in Tin Tower at night. Chuck's Primeape won't be able to even harm Haunter, and the only move Poliwrath can use against Haunter is Surf. Haunter won't get Dream Eater until Level 33, and Chuck's highest level Pokemon is his Level 30 Poliwrath. While also can't get any Psychic-type TMs until later in the game, you can obtain a TM for Thunder at the Goldenrod Game Corner if you can get 5500 coins, which can be used to zap the water-type Poliwrath, though you may need to give it an X-Accuracy or two to get past Thunder's bad aim. Rain Dance does make Thunder never miss, and you can find the TM for it in Slowpoke Well, but it will make Poliwrath's Surf attack stronger. So, be careful when using it.
@@marcelinoalvarado9129It had to have been ripped by someone, somehow at some point. Now is the total number of people that have their own dump on their computer probably exactly 1? Yes. Do I know how they did it? No.
For HGSS, I think everything's mostly the same but with subtle differences. As Falkner has Roost instead of Mud Slap, Geodude and Onix are viable. Even though Bugsy starts with Scyther, it always uses U-Turn, so no changes there. While Muscle is still good against Whitney, I'd also have Heracross as viable now, as it gets Brick Break by level up at 19 and it hits much harder than a Machop. While it does lose the rock resist, Heracross is much bulkier and faster than Machop as well, so it can survive Stomps much easier. The only real change for Morty is the addition of Gen 4 evolutions. While you'd have to trade a Shiny Stone over, like you'd have to trade for Alakazam, Togekiss completely stomps on Morty's team all because of one move: Extrasensory. A slightly weaker Psychic and an egg move that the Togepi egg you're given has. Togekiss is both fast and powerful. While Togetic isn't as strong, it's still got decent specials that it can hurt with Extrasensory. Same thing with Chuck. Extrasensory Togekiss/Togetic. For Pryce, he doesn't have any water moves on his Seel or Dewgong, so a good fire-type can do some damage. Magmar can be caught in the Burned Tower in GS and HGSS and has a solid movepool and stats. In GS, it can even be taught Thunderpunch. In HGSS, as long as it doesn't have its speed lowered by Icy Wind, it can destroy Piloswine with Fire Punch or Flamethrower/Fire Blast (via TM). Otherwise, Heracross with fighting stab. Another option is Lapras, as it gets access to the TM for Thunderbolt from the Game Corner. Thunderbolt and Surf sweep the fight. For Jasmine, Quagsire is even better, as Steelix doesn't have Sunny Day anymore. Second would probably be your own Steelix with Dig, as you can't reteach it Fire Fang until Blackthorn, or Golem. And for Claire, that starting Gyarados rains on Ursaring's parade with Intimidate. And there's nothing that gets a clean sweep, either. Feraligatr gets Ice Fang, but it gets stopped by Intimidate and Thunderwave. Gyarados also gets Ice Fang and gets Dragon Dance at 44, but you'd be overleveled. My recommendation is Magneton. At the Goldenrod Department Store, you can do a raffle on the rooftop with the grand prize being a TM. On Tuesdays, the TM is for Flash Cannon. If you don't want to gamble for Flash Cannon, you can also reteach it Tri-Attack at the Move Relearner in Blackthorn. With Flash Cannon and Discharge at level 40, you only need to worry about Claire's second Dragonair that knows Fire Blast and Kingdra spamming Hydro Pump. Extrasensory Togekiss is also good, especially since you can reteach it Aura Sphere in case Kingdra tries to get cheeky with Smokescreen. You can even get into your own shenanigans if you reteach it Air Slash and do Serene Grace flinch strats. Another option for Claire in all versions of Johto is the Friday Lapras that you can get right after beating Morty. In GSC, it only has to worry about the second Dragonair that knows Thunderbolt. In HGSS, you only have to worry about getting paralysed from Thunderwave. Should you avoid those, it naturally learns Ice Beam in the 30s in all the Johto games. Just spam Ice Beam, it's that simple. As long as it has some speed investment, it can outspeed all the Dragonairs. Thunderbolt would also be helpful for the Gyarados.
I feel that you should change Red’s team a little bit. I know it’s iconic, and is a pretty good team. But it’s been the same for over 10 years (except for espeon). I think the Red fight would be made far more interesting if you have Red his Manga team. Also, you should make his pikachu have boasted stats to make it better
It's already the highest level mon in the game bro. Short of giving it an omniboost like it's totem ribombee or some shit I think that's about all one can do
I remember Morty softlocking himself against my Eevee. Eevee got paralyzed from gastly/haunter's Lick, so it couldn't get another status affliction like you said. Then gengar came out and did mean look and from there, it could only struggle
So I recently started to replay my old vanilla crystal I got from the eshop years ago on my 3Ds. I noticed that there’s such a grind to lvl up after beating trainers and beating up so many randoms in the grass… I really hate the grind it’s so tedious to level up. Exp share can only do so much.
Am assuming that you're treating this as a nuzzlock also. Which is why you didn't include Lapras as an option against Clair even though it learns ice beam at level 36?
Rocky the Onix is a solide option for the Bug and Normal Gym, too. It should win with Screech + Bind + Rock Throw against Miltank. And the poisoned Raticate is a whole new level of played smart.
