This is the Wacaco Picopresso and it is an incredibly competent little machine. I unbox the Picopresso, pull a variety of shots with it, and discuss with my friend John. We were honestly surprised by how well the Picopresso performed especially after we learned the workflow. This is a machine that shouldn't be slept on.
Don't worry I'll be comparing the Nomad to the Picopresso in the future!

Very nice review! A few thoughts: - To more easily close the top cap, start by turning it counterclockwise until you feel a click, then turn clockwise to close. - I find that holding the Picopresso between my palms and pushing the pump with the heel of one palm (like you're doing at 27:00) is easier than other positions. - I don't think tilting the Picopresso to try to see the stream benefits extraction. I believe it should be held straight, centered above the cup. Focus on the scale instead of the bottom of the basket. - If you want more texture, maybe use a conical grinder? - In the shot you compared the Picopresso against the Decent you didn't pause for pre-infusion. I think it would compare even better if you did. I pump 10 times, then wait 10 seconds, then continue pumping for the actual extraction.

Nice review! It's nice to hear validation on the quality of Picopresso from someone with more experince in various espresso machines. A used Wacaco Nanopresso was my entry into espressomaking at home a few months ago, soon followed by Picopresso and 1Zpresso JE-Plus grinder. I've dug throught so many videos from both of you and learned a ton of valuable information from them. Thanks for being nerdy in the best of way and sharing your passion with the world! Greetings from Helsinki ☕✌️

I just received a Picopresso as my first espresso maker as I get into the hobby... I have a k-max grinder and have pulled shots that my wife and I enjoy and were as good or even better than anything we can get at local coffee shops. I hope to move up to a Flair 58 once I save up some money as I love the process and ritual with the manual machines. Looking forward to watching this video and seeing your reaction.

Look into the Argos as an upgrade. The Flair 58 will result in better workflow than the pico but not better shots.

Great video, love the approach and openness to the device. I’ve had mine for a few months now and got the workflow down and enjoy the shots. One use case between home and camping/woods is travelling to hotels. I threw it in my bag for a trip alongside my hand grinder and was able to produce excellent espresso from a hotel room.

I bought one last summer for camping, I was so impressed that I continued to use it pretty much every day for the last 7 months. As you said, workflow is key and preheating is a necessity/ I also added a puck screen and preheat my shower screen to help with temps. Using the pico and a bodum french press I can make a wicked latte pretty much anywhere :D

@antonc81 2 года назад
You can replace the basket with an ims basket for the post millennium la Pavoni lever machine. BPlus sell them (as well as puck screens that fit the baskets). May be worth experimenting. Also I believe wacaco are developing a pressure gauge for the picopresso.

Seeing the side-by-side comparisons of the Picopresso and Decent shots is what ultimately made me pick up a Picopresso as my first home espresso machine. Obviously you prefer the Decent shots, but the fact that you're sipping them side-by-side, and still admit to the Pico's shots being not only good, but "pretty close," is a heck of an endorsement, considering the Picopresso is about $130 USD, versus four grand for a Decent DE1.

Looking forward to the comparison between this and the nomad! That’s actually a decision I’m trying to make at the moment… leaning more towards the picopresso though as it’s readily available in the EU and the nomad isn’t.

👍 Great review! Really unfiltered raw, so for me happy in comparison to see what went wromg what went right... Thank you! One thing though, I really am still very curious to see and know how it went with the first shot that had to be cancelles due to too fine of a grind. How whete you able to release that massive pressure from the press? Did it explode or is the top cap threaded enough with gasket to allow slow depressuring?

Good thorough review! I'm with 18g on the Pico - for both Scandinavian light roasts and dark roasts, and getting amazingly sweet shots. I recommend on tamping first with the dosing ring, and then once again without (lightly). In my opinion - Pico is a game changer in espresso. Easy to use, unexpensive, portable, comes with all the needed tools. 😍

I've actually been using a 14g 51mm IMS basket and it has been a game changer for lights as the puck extracts more evenly (straight walled). I can even push finer grinds with it

I'm a robot user most of the time but bought one of these to bring on holidays with a kinu m47 and nanofoamer. I didn't lower the dose and stuck with around 18 grams, was at a coarser grind than the robot (1.2 for that, 1.6ish for the pico) and did 12 initial pumps and a 10 second pause. First drips and a pressure ramp came in on the next few pumps and it normally gave me about a 40 second shot. I was shocked that it gave me a better shot on my regular blend than the robot did! I've been playing with my temperature in for the past while as it has to be brewing a little colder than the robot but the biggest difference was likely the mineral content of the water I was using. Loved the results that I got! As you guys said the cleanup / workflow is a slight pain in the ass if you were running a load of shots per day but you can't fault the results!
@heppy881

Also have the kinu and was having issues dialling it in for the pico until I read your post. Very little info regards using the kinu with the pico online but tried your recipe with great effect. In fact I pulled an amazing shot using 1.6 on the kinu with 15g on the stock basket over 30 seconds (including a 10 second pre infusion). So thanks for the tip 😊

Dont badmouth my 1zpresso q2 😅 50-60 secounds grinding of 16 grams at about 24 clicks (1z q2) Pump with both hands, preheat the body! Prewet 8 pumps 8 secounds, finish on 32g between 30-40 secounds I get thick thick juicy delicious complex espresso. Better than most chain cafe espresso, in the ballpark of local artisan roastery cafés 🤩 Only drawback is how many steps you have to go trough. But worth it!

I put in for the Xbar kickstarter before the Picopresso went on pre-order. As someone who had their hands on a preproduction Xbar, how do you feel that machine compares to the likes of the Nomad and Picoproesso. Hong Kong just received their Xbar units and it'll still be a few more months till I receive mine.

12 grams will be perfect for the dosing cup, around 8 to 10 micrometers grand sizes for dark roasted close to two cracks, 12 micrometers for light to light medium roasted from my experience using BPlus manual grinder

You are supposed to tamp with the funnel on, so it is a much lighter tamp than you would do with a standard espresso machine and allows you to maintain that fine grind and 18g dose. I made the same mistake the first few times I used it because I got too excited to use it and skipped reading a few of the 23 steps :)

For anyone interested, I would definitely recommend pouring the hot water with the picopresso on the table and not while holding. You don’t want your fingers so close to the boiling water from the kettle Ask me how I know…. Also interested in how they solved the over pressure issue ~11:50. I just tossed it in the sink and waited an hour or so. No chances with that little pressure bomb haha

I'm curious if you've tried it with 18g yet? You'll need to tamp WITH the dosing funnel (I'm sure you already got enough comments on that already) to be able to get 18g. Would adding a puck screen be worth it? Or changing out the basket? Curious if you would add or replace parts for the Picopresso!

I also own a picopresso, but today I've noticed that its pump (that part which you turn, it sticks out, and pump it to create pressure) when it sticks out, I saw that it has these deep scratches, like something raw is stuck inside and pump got all scratched up, have you noticed anything similiar on your picopresso?

In fact, I have used this machine and it is very difficult to operate. Not recommended for the average user, unless you have a decent grinder you will be disappointed. If you can't control the thickness of the powder well, either you can't press it, or you can't form the pressure to extract the coffee crema.

I wonder how your unit is now that two months have passed? It's been a couple months for me as well and the amount of hot water leaking from the piston and around the screw threads is getting to be unacceptable. Clearly, some seals have failed. I've contacted Wacaco's support bot and hopefully they'll have an answer for me. Otherwise, I'm gonna attempt to tear the unit down, clean it out, lube it up, whatever to make it work like it did in February.

The dynamic seemed very negatively critical in some way. And, Im giving up before I hear whether you liked it without preheat. Every other video I've seen they DID preheat.
