Appreciate the video! I'm transitioning into stomach sleeping due to sleep apnea(which has proven unresponsive to CPAP and my adjustable bed) and haven't been able to sleep more than an hour at a time due to back or neck pain. I'm thinking of what I could do with one of those prone pillows, maybe set up a rig past the top of my mattress so the underside is open to fresh air.
@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 4 года назад
I'm sorry to hear that you are going through that Vergo. What you described is certainly doable. That is how some massage tables are set up- the prone pillow part is protruding off the bed which allows for airflow. You can check if there are attachments for a bed or maybe you can improvise. Hope this helps.

I'm mainly a stomach sleeper but I am comfortable sleeping on my back and my stomach, but at the same time I breathe easier when I sleep on my stomach, while sleeping on my back because it's a little difficult I tend to open my mouth and I end up with a mild cough or sore throat when I wake up. Should I change my position anyway? Because I'm finding it harder to sleep because I'm anxious over whether my sleep positon is "correct"
@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 3 года назад
Good question. If you are fine with sleeping on your stomach and you don't get any pains or problems with that, then you don't necessarily have to change it. If you want to try sleeping on your back, I suggest trying to turn your head to one side or the other. This will enable you to keep your mouth closed during your sleep. Everyone has a different "correct" sleeping position according to their body. Hope this helps.

I usually like to sleep on my stomach but anytime I put my arms above my head they get tingly and go completely numb. And there has been many times where I’ve woken up to my alarm and just sitting there for like 30 seconds being unable to turn it off because my arms are completely numb from the shoulder down.
@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 4 года назад
I'm sorry to hear this Jake. By what you described, it is possible that you have something in your neck or upper back that is pressing on the nerve when you raise your arm above your head. I recommend getting it checked out to be sure. Hope this helps.

@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 4 года назад
Great question Jason. Some prone pillows have a gap at the chin part of the cushion which will allow air to go in/out when you breathe. Depending on the size of your head, this may or may not be enough. If it is not enough for air circulation, choose a thicker prone pillow which will allow more air to circulate (or improvise by using towel around the face area if you cannot find a thicker prone pillow.) Hope this helps.

Why is sleeping on your stomach bad for you? What are the ill effects? I am 52 and don’t have back pain (but maybe knowing the ill effects will help motivate me to change). Thanks!
@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 4 года назад
Dear Baribrooks, that's a great question. Sleeping on your stomach is not necessarily bad all the time. You just have to do it in the proper position. Some reasons why I don't like sleeping on your stomach without any modifications are 1. your neck will have to turned to 1 side so you can breathe which can lead to neck pain, 2. because of the breast (mostly in women and some men if they are heavy) the lumbar spine tends to be in lordosis that can irritate the spinal nerves, 3. if the stomach is protruding, the spine will not be in neutral position which can lead to back pain, 4. if the feet are not over the edge of the bed, the ankles will be plantarflexed (pointing towards the foot) and this can cause ankle issues. Proper positioning can remedy these problems. I am not saying all these problems will occur for sure if you sleep on your tummy but they can. Or they may not. Hope these help.

@andyandys5356

Is it important to elevate your legs?
@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 4 года назад
Good question Andy. It depends on what you mean by elevating your legs. If you mean fully elevating the legs including the thighs, that will not be good in this position because it will extend the hips and the back. If you mean elevating the legs because of the pillow under the shin area, this is done to make room for the feet so that it will not be pointing towards the foot of the bed which can be an uncomfortable position for some people especially if they have tight ankles. Hope this helps.
@andyandys5356
@andyandys5356 4 года назад
Because many say use a pillow for your legs when sleeping on your back helps with circulation,reduces leg swelling etc.. So just asking does having a pillow for your legs while sleeping on your stomach have the same benefits?
@restorepluspt

@@andyandys5356 No, it does not have the same benefit and effect. The position of the spine will be different when sleeping on the back versus sleeping on the stomach. Hope this clears things up a bit.

I already have a very big tummy so should I need a pillow under my stomach
@restorepluspt
@restorepluspt 4 года назад
Good question Shashi. The answer is it depends. People who have a big stomach tend to have a big chest also and this will put the spine in the extended position when they lie on their stomach. Or the weight/pressure of the stomach will push down on the mattress (especially if ti is soft) and still leave the low back in the extended position. If these are the cases, you will still need a pillow. But if not and the lumbar spine is in the neutral or slightly flexed position, then the pillow may not be needed. Hope this helps.
