The Thursday Murder Club and it's sequel are super cute but I consider them more mystery than thriller. This is probably why they worked for me because I have been having a hard time enjoying thrillers lately. I really enjoyed The Push. It worked as a horror for me. I just remember that time after my son was born how hard it was and how depressed and tired I was and I felt for the main character. It just clicked for me. I couldn't put it down.

I'm 19 books into the Jack Reacher series. If you want to give it a shot (pun intended) Start with "Killing Floor." They are kinda just shoot em' up action movies. My favorites were "Persuader" and "Tripwire". I'm only about 60% sure I'm going to continue the series bc they do get repetitive and at this point he's pretty much just a superhero. There are a few ultrabadass women but they don't show up much. Hope this was helpfull.

Both of the Richard Osman books are some of my favorites of all time! I will say the writing takes some getting used to. If your initial thoughts are to put it down (like Piranesi), give it some time and you'll fall into the rhythm quickly! Most I've avoided on the strength of your rants (which I loved watching ☺️). Have you tried Out by Natsuo Kirino? I have a copy which I bought for the very artsy and pretty cover, but I ended up liking the book too ☺️ (trigger warning... The main characters are female... In pre-2000s Japan (can't remember the decade it's set)... Not as gory/violent/mysoginistic as I originally feared, but people's mileage will vary)

I highly recommend people to go into a local bookshop and just pick up a random mystery/thriller book that sounds interesting and don't read too much into it. I hated The Push. As a mother of 4 I couldn’t stand reading about how the mother was so neglectful and abusive to her child. Any issues that child has later in her life I feel we’re caused by her mother. Putting headphones on to ignore your baby crying literally all day because you resent your life as a mother isn’t ok. The mother shouldn’t have had kids when she did. It was obvious to me that the little girl resents her mother and eventually her brother because of the way her mother treated her. You have to remember that one was a small child and the other is an adult.

You're in for a treat with Richard Osman's books. I found the first one solidly good with a delightful quartet of main characters. The second one was even better. His third is due out in September right before my birthday so I'll be treating myself. For what it's worth, I enjoyed The Final Girl Support Group. Also, a book that might scratch the same itch as the premises of Riley Sager's books but actually be good is A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. And not related to mysteries/thrillers, I just finished Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (after having read The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry based on your recommendation). The new one is also excellent if you have at least a passing familiarity with video games. Don't have to be an expert, just have played some at some point in your life.

I find Lisa Jewell very hit and miss… more miss than hit. I did enjoy The Family upstairs though and will read the sequel, The Family Remains. I feel most mystery thriller books that come out these days are all hyped by social media and as you say, pushed through and rarely deliver. I did screen shot 3 you did like to look into. I now treat mystery thrillers as popcorn reads only and they very rarely get a rating over 3. That said, they are my summer go to relax and don’t have to think too much genre. I agree with you that We Begin at the End is really good, but again, not a mystery per se but more literary fiction. I struggle these days to find a well written book (for me at least). Have you read The island of missing trees? Or Black Cake? I’d be interested i your opinion. Also, Memphis. I like them all and gave 4 stars . Thank for the recos. My TBR grows some more! Xx

I read the TMC and I was like "Eh, it's okay" but I decided to carry on. MWDT made me like the series so much that I pre ordered the 3rd book. So I think MWDT is stronger than the first. I felt I connected and understood the characters and their personalities so much more. The first one was such a slog but the second one was a fly by. Though I tend to get bored/frustrated when the group takes a while to come together/be a group. So that's probably one of the reasons I enjoyed the second one as the group was solid. I have always enjoyed "Old people solve crimes" trope though. It's one of my favourites.

@@sexydoorframes Weeeellll, I have a copy of the second book in my TBR. It's been there for so long the third book is already out for preorder and well....I also purchased that. 🥲 I enjoy crime and stories that includes the elderly and thought the combination of the two would provide a fun read. I will take your word for it and continue reading the series once the weather gets cooler or maybe as soon as I finish my current read. OuO

I tried to read ‘The Silent Patient’ 3 times. Not sure I’ll try again.

Alice Feeneys new book Daisy Darker sounds so good, but if it's bad I'm done with the author. Rock Paper Scissors feld like my hand was being held by the author the entire time and I was always told what to think, and the foreshadowing was soooo overdone. I love foreshadowing but not at the end of every single chapter.

Can't believe The Guest List is in the list... the whole book feels like a Prelude...

The Wives and The Maidens are both terrible, so good call! I think you might like The Thursday Murder Club!

I read the maid. I didn't think it was bad, the main character was kind of annoying (not her fault really but 🤷‍♀️). If you do try it be prepared for the sayings 😅 "Tissue for your issue?" 🤧

So I'm not the only resident of Earth who thought the Silent Patient was mediocre, good to know!

Razorblade Tears was underwhelming tbh. But I also don‘t think that I‘m the target audience so…. It basically reads like a standard action blockbuster movie. As for Grady Hendrix. I recommend My Best Friends Exorcism over The Final Girls Support Group. It’s about female friendship and full of cheesy 80s references. I love Grady Hendrix but I think if you‘re not a big horror movie fan he‘s more of a hit or miss. He loves to hide horror related Easter eggs in his stories or straight up references a lot of classic horror films and it‘s really fun (for example the characters in The Final Girl Support Group are basically the final girls from classic slasher movies like Halloween or Texas Chainsaw).

I started a book from Lucy Foley, I'm not sure if it was The hunting game or the guest list but after a couple of pages I said no, I can't do this to myself. The writing or the characters , not sure which one but it was so bad.

Totally agree with you on the Silent Patient, so medicore and forgetful. The guset list was so insufferable to read, should have DNF it instead to finish it painfully. To be honest, these so called the " thriller" is more like drama with some thriller elements, and neither the drama nor the thriller is done well.
