This is true. Because I didn't know anything about strategy I released an entire 8 track album at the start of the year. Then try to select 3 singles out of those songs. But it was too late. The expectation had died and so I'm struggling now to gain followers and streams. Not only that but I now can't submit any of those tracks to an editorial playlist because have been already released as an album. Eventually my team and I decided to remove the album and re release it at the beginning of the year but as I said all expectation is gone. Now I'm looking forward to release new material and planning the more effective way.

yasss! when i first started pursuing music as a career, i initially came out gun blazing and dropped a full EP with no following and saw no results. i took it down and started releasing singles, playing shows, investing in content, and i then saw a fan base coming together! thanks for a more in-depth video about the details of a solid release strategy. I'm going to try this!

If I release a track as single but it’s gonna be part of an album eventually, will Spotify figure out that the single track is the same as the one on the album and carry over the stream count?

@Burstimo Releasing my singles every other month seems a bit stretched out. At that rate, it'll be over a year before my first album is even heard... How frequent is too frequent? I COULD kick out a track a day. But once a week seems like a better pace. Is that too frequent?
@Burstimo
@Burstimo 4 года назад
You can certainly do weekly but you need to give your audience a chance to take in the releases and give yourself a chance to promote them
@servanttofriend8481
@servanttofriend8481 4 года назад
@@Burstimo Okay... I also saw you recommended releasing 40% of the album as singles in the comments. That makes more sense to me... I'm wanting to release 2 albums per year (at least). So, I'm thinking I'll release 3-4 singles off each one, spaced out about a month. Then, drop the albums, wait two months and do it all over again. Sound good?
@ChrisTheWest
@ChrisTheWest 5 лет назад
You mention that you can "pass over" previously released singles to an EP or album within Spotify. How? The only way I'm aware of is by removing the songs and resubmitting with the same ISRC and metadata.
@Burstimo
@Burstimo 5 лет назад
Different distributors can do it. AWAL definitley offer it but not too sure about others such as TuneCore and Ditto. It basically keeps the streams from the single and places the track in the new EP/album.
@ChrisTheWest
@ChrisTheWest 5 лет назад
@@Burstimo AWAL aren't open to every artist though, you have to apply to get distribution with them. This is what Spotify support services emailed back to me when I asked about it in September: "It's possible to remove and reupload your albums without losing your play counts through a process called track linking. As a friendly reminder, this process is automatic, although isn't 100% guaranteed. When attempting to track link, you should ensure that the metadata is as identical as possible, including the duration, title, artist, and ISRC. The audio used should also be exactly the same. If possible, it’s also worth checking the releases have successfully linked before removing the old content. We recommend making sure all replacement content is delivered at least 5 business days ahead of the set live date. During this transition, there may be some fluctuation in the Popular section of your artist profile. Don’t worry - this should normalize within 72 hours of the new content being live."

How can I release the singles seperately and then release the whole album? (As you said, Spotify has this feature of passing the songs to the ep or album without losing streams...how can I do so?) My distributor is Routenote currently...

Something just clicked for me.. ok think I am finally starting to understand :) Great vid. Thanks EDIT* also can you guys or anyone else please tell me do you just release the songs individually as single separate releases (in this case exclusively to Spotify) then after all tracks are on Spotify then Upload the full EP separately to iTunes, beatport etc etc ? Is that correct? Is that a good strategy? Or is there an option on ditto so you initially release it as an EP all in one release then specify which tracks are released when and where?

Great advice! Question: assuming that after some growth the artist will want to release an EP or album, when should that be? How many singles should be released before an EP is released? Is there a certain number of followers/streams before taking that next step?

i was thinking of packaging singles as they used to come in tape form or record and contain, the main track, and maybe a remix version or versions an intramental version and one or two more tracks from the album, not sure if it makes sense on the streaming platform as much.

You said that the collective attention span is growing shorter but then you also said to tell the story of your album over a longer period of time. I think that this single release strategy works if the tracks truly are singles. However, if you are telling a story with a full-length LP, no one wants to set a reminder to come back a month later and hear segment 4 of a 12 part tale.
@Burstimo
@Burstimo 5 лет назад
Maybe we didn't explain that fully. What we mean by tell the story of your album over longer period of time is to release singles monthly to tell the story of your album along a long period of time, rather than try to get someone to sit and listen to an album in full
@thesuddenheir
@thesuddenheir 5 лет назад
@@Burstimo I understand that. I'm saying that it requires both an attention span and an unusually large commitment to assume that your audience can wait weeks to hear the next part of your story. Often, the first track of a record, despite being a wonderful first track and setup for a record, is not gripping enough for me to make sure to come back for more. That's why Netflix releases entire seasons of content.

In my personal experience, my band recorded an album in a house, "released" it on a specific date, then dropped singles over time (every 4 weeks) and released videos in between those times. Fans could buy the album at shows or on our website only. It hurt because nobody could actually listen to the album, even for the small amount of people who would come it.
