I explain the proper Rod and Line Combinations for the top 10 Bass Lures and I explain why these combinations work. Plus I take a few trips down memory Lane.

Out of all the techniques I’ve fished, the Texas Rig Senko is my favorite. Holding and move the rod 45 to 90 degrees.....feel the line twitch, drop the rod down.... wind it up, then set the hook.......to find a Bass on the end of the line. Nothing like it. Yep, I was Roland Martin for a time last Sat. And man, it was cool!

Roland, I am 71 years old and grew up fishing the Gulf Coast North of Tampa for Specs and Red Fish. We fish a lot, but we always used spinning reels. I only owned one rod and a Mitchell 300 reel with 12 lb mono for everything. This was before yours or anyone’s fishing shows except for 30 minutes occasionally on ABC Wide World of sports. Anyway we did not know about bait casting reels and rods. I married in 1969 and my father in law used them. He was a terrible sport and a worse teacher, so after backlashing one of his a couple of times, I realized that I was better off staying with my spinning reels combos. Now I always learn a lot from you every time I watch. I will say that I used braid on my spinning reels when I first saw it on bait casting rigs. So my big question is, do the same tackle criteria for pole strength/length and line types and weights for the top ten lures apply/cross over to spinning tackle? To old to change now. Thank you. The old professor
@pgmale
@pgmale 4 года назад
yes! the biggest difference between the baitcaster and spinning as i understand has to do w/ the gear ratio of the reel. you hear him talk about his Bass Pro Shop Platinum having "an 8:1" gear ratio. A higher gear ratio = more line pulled in per turn. it is indeed part of what makes his style "power fishing"!

Great video Mr. Marlin. I'm sure a lot of viewers are surprised that you use mono for different applications. I keep telling many of these younger anglers that mono is here to stay, and for good reason. They seem to think that mono is "old, out-dated line that your grandpa used"........nothing could be further from the truth. Imagine you're fishing a large crank bait and the bass of a lifetime slams it. During that crucial battle, a large or powerful fish can easily rip itself free of those small treble hooks, and good old fashioned mono is absolutely your best friend. The stretch in the line actually complements a smooth, well-set drag, and helps keep that giant bass buttoned up to those small trebles. For anglers on a budget, yet use many rods, re-spooling with mono is very economical & actually out-lasts expensive fluoro by a huge margin. Mono is also more abrasion resistant than fluoro, and casts better too. For the best bench test with mono vs fluoro for abrasion resistance, visit youtube ch: "Salt Strong" and find their test video. In repeated testing, mono put the top brand fluoro to shame.

Mr Martin, Can you explain in a video when you would or why you would use a spinning reel vs a baitcaster?
@jacobroberts4241
@jacobroberts4241 4 года назад
Really depends on what your throwing and if u look he has a video explaining why he power fishes over finesse.... hes from florida hes used to bigger fish he uses baits that produce drag and have weight to them so he uses a baitcaster now even if hes throwing a weightless senko he still uses a baitcaster but ive seen him use spinning rods for ned rigs and drops shots but other than that he prefers powerfishing for example say a chatterbait here recently and the senko as a backup he lives by the senko and my uncle does too there about the same age and have been fishing for a long time and there right it works All the time no matter the time of year water clarity temperature none of it matters with a senko and i beleieve its because bass have a flight or fighr instinct they react before they think unlike humans or other animals so when a bait hits the water there reaction is based off two factors is it prey or a predator and in the case of a worm it always almost everytime sends the signal that its prey and harmless and they always see it as food instead of something that can potentially eat them u throw a 12 inch swimbait at a 14inch bass and some of them will try to eat it but most will flee first now u throw a worm at the same fish and every single time he will eat it not flee its that simple

Roland, my Dad would set me and my sister down and watch you in the tournaments whenever they were on tv, you're unbelievable. Thank you so very much for your videos and instructings on just about everything. My question is this; how do you cast a jig or jerk bait etc., out when it is so light. I'm in South Central Ohio and I seem to not be able to catch anything. I didn't have a problem in my home state but here, I have bought so much tackle it seems and I can't find the right waterways, I can't seem to snag anything. I take that back, I have caught a itty bitty blue gill- I don't know what to do. I don't see any type of weight on your line when using these type of lures and I have to bank fish because I don't have a boat. Help me!! Hahahaha!!!

Few randoms for ya! Ever hear of the ledge buster spinner baits from Eufala? What would you recommend for those monster baits? Also, do you prefer a spinning setup or bait caster for trick worms, mainly zoom? I fish thick stuff with those trick worms on a medium spinning rod, sometimes braided line and sometimes even light line. I have trouble with hook sets on the spinning combo even with braid. My good fishing stuff was pawned by "family" while I was in service, and having two kids redirects priorities of spending now. Hahaha. I run a 6'6" Lew's spinning combo and a black max bait caster on my only remaining good high dollar 7' MH casting rod. The black max hasn't held up internally so I always end up using the Lew's spinner for lighter baits and presentations...yes even flipping at times. Found/bought some older Shimano casters that I tried to restore, but they don't cast too well anymore either, so one will soon be my flipping only setup with flourocarbon and a 7' MH. Gotta use what I got and what can get baits where the fish are. Learned to be a master of drag using a near ultralight for bass when I was younger. Caught an 8lber on it when I was back in HS with a 4" trick worm...took quite a while but it's all about pressure and manipulation. What are some huge "NO" setups for frogs and trick worms...other than what I am doing...missing a ton of fish on a medium/light rod. Lol

Hey Roland how’s it going do you think you could talk about gear ratios and what kind of fishing you should apply those to if it’s better to use high gear for top water and low gear on crank baits and if it’s better to use high gear on jigs In case you have to reel more line for fast set
