It would have been nice if you guys covered some more budget running jackets also. Not everyone has over £100 to spend on a jacket for a few rainy runs. I'm running in a £24 Decathlon jacket which is great.
How breathable are they please mate. I was going to get one but I sweat a lot when I run so am worried I will get just as wet on the inside as the out ?
Top tip on Gore jackets...the C (eg C3) means cycling, R (eg R3) means running and the cut is a little different. Mine's a C3 but still good for running in and I love it.
I run in the INOV-8 Stormshell and love it! Having said that, I put my iPhone (11, not a big one!) in the pocket the first time I wore it and it broke straight through and smashed on the ground within 3 km!
maybe a video of some more economy brands, sub £50 and hi-vis too not black with a little reflective detail you can barely see (like nike do) but great video :)
@@MrSupernova111 I love the running channel but didn’t the female runner say that the “on” jacket is more water resistant than water proof and driving rain does come through . So they’re not necessarily reviewing the best waterproof jackets . It’s showerproof or water resistant also. Plenty of those for under £50
I personally use a kalenji running jacket from decathlon, had it for 3 years, basically since I started my running journey 😊 it was super cheap, about 13€, light, more windproof than waterproof, but still does well in the rain, you can easily carry it (when you fold it in a pocket, it has a rubber band) breathability-wise, it's not terrible, not great either, but it's enough 😅 plus, it works perfect for cycling in colder weather ❤️ so, if any beginner is looking to get a jacket without big investment, this one is great 😊 Also, can we do a video on gloves and hats? ❤️
I've been wearing a Howies lightweight jacket for years. Reflective strips, good pocket, very breathable but completely wind proof, weight equals 2 teabags! It folds very small. Only showerproof but keeps me warm still if it's torrential. Fits female shape beautifully and hood stays on.
I use a decathlon running jacket for the rain. Got the best one they do and was still a very reasonable price. It stays relatively cool, has reasonable breathability, is comfortable and doesn’t seem to chafe and comes with its own pack bag. And it is very waterproof...
Thank you guys. Especially Andy. My OMM HALO jacket just arrived and I can’t WAIT to use it for a run. Actually using it to climb Helvellyn on Tuesday. But as a fellow 6 ft 2 skinny bloke, your review was timely. Thanks!!!
Oh my goodness you have no idea how badly I needed this! It's been raining and cold for days where I live, and working out indoors isn't really an option. I LOVE exercising outside, but I refuse to catch pneumonia in the process. (Seriously, it's so friggin' cold.) Thank you!!!
I really like the Ultimate Direction Ultra jacket. It's lightweight and has good waterproofing and breathability. It also has built in mittens to cover your hands if needed. It doesn't have an external pocket, but does have a small internal pocket.
I use shakedry jacket for running and cycling. It's been a game changer for me as from October to march I simply change baselayers to suit temps. And no degredation over couple of years. Performance is utterly flawless
Just back from a run in my Soar Ultra 2.0. Love it. Nice sized pocket on the back to slip gloves or cap in when not required. Super waterproof and breathable. No hood which is one reason I got it. Can't stand running with a hood flapping behind me or up and obscuring peripheral vision. Waterproof cap for me.
Thanks for this... I've only been running since the start of lockdown, and determined not to let the cold, rain and dark mornings give me an excuse not to get out there! 🏃🏃🏃
It would be good if you could do a video on high viz items. I see so many runners out at night with dark t shirts. I wear a ronhill bib which is reflective but it’s always good to have options.
Great video. I like your favorite picks. One thing. Who actually wears a hood running in the rain? A runners cap with a brim to keep the rain out of your eyes is the way to go. So I prefer for running a waterproof jacket without the hood.
I had such a horrible cold and rainy run a few weeks ago, my hands were so cold I couldn't even press the button to unlock my car! Since then I've been trying to find a running jacket, this is so super timely. 😂
Ive got the OMM Halo jacket, had it for almost 2 years and it’s been up a few Munro’s as well as out on the runs, I also got the over trousers to go with it, absolutely superb for its pack size and weight.
Gore have some great materials, but then the fit lets them down. They really need to sort that out and also remember not all people who run have a marathon runners physique. Some companies do a great job of finding an athletic fit which can fit all kinds of body type as you can just size up.
My favorite go-to for cooler days is my Sugoi running jacket because it has removable sleeves (attached by magnets) and a back pocket to tuck them into. Perfect for those cool starts where you want some extra protection until you warm up.
Thanks for the demo guys. I really like the look of the Inov-8 jacket. Of course the Gore jackets are optimum but they are very pricey. Honestly if it's not too cold I like running in the rain, but if a runner is going long on trails they need a jacket that will ward off hypothermia.
Love the Solomon jacket. Totally rain proof. Really like the snap at the top that allows you to unzip the jacket for air intake without it flying open. However, a major design flaw is that there are no exit vents such as pit zips or anything on the back. Often times I'm dry from the rain but soaked from my sweat because there's no inside airflow.
I have been researching waterproof running jackets for months now that suits the Irish weather! This video can’t come at a better time 😁 I took Coach Andy’s advise for OMM brand. It fits my budget and perfect for function. Soooo Purchased on Amazon just now! 😂 Thank you!
One thing I like about Ronhill is that their Medium size covers 38-41in chest as opposed to standard 38-40in. Therefore, if you fit right between a medium and a large its a winner! I hate having to go up to a large to accomodate my broader shoulders because the jacket is baggy everywhere else! And generally these jackets are tailored for more narrow shoulders.
My last purchase is the asics accelerate jacket in yellow. Its a nice fit for ladies round hips as Anna pointed out. Ive not got wet in it yet. It's got over hands coverage over the elastic. Its got two pockets and is taped. My friend has the ronhill mountain tech gortex one you've covered in this video which I like but now I like Anna's favourite one.
i went out in the rain in my bfs running jacket from some years back a while ago... came home soaked and said that this must be a wind, not water protective jacket.. hes like "yea" nottt happy that he didnt inform me earlier! but once i was wet i was wet so oh well:P
Funny, was running in the rain, thinking about your channel and wondering if you had some ideas on what to wear during colder periods, like when its raining, snowing and is icey...
Recently bought Gore Wear R5 Wmn GORE-TEX I SL Ladies runningjacket. Been looking for a long time, high price and doubt about the quality was keeping me from buying one. I have worn it 3 times now, but not in heavy rain yet. Looks nice, good fit, has one small pocket and no hood. Not sure if it is breathable enough. Great video, thanks for showing so many options 🧥👟👟🌧🌬💨💦
I got the on jacket a little while ago. Fits super nicely, ultra light. The quality feels amazing. But as mentioned like most other jackets only a small pocket to maybe fit your keys and phone. Also like all gear from on it does not come cheap. But I love all their stuff and invested in quite a lot of their shoes and clothes.
I have worn Marmot jackets to ultras, marathons, early morning training runs, and found that lined jackets are amazing in the cold winter, the trail jacket is great for fall/spring running and light rain, it's so thin I can't imagine a hard rain would keep me dry...certainly breathable though.
@@runningchannel I don’t mind this weather. Means I can carry less stuff and don’t need my water pack. Never need a drink in this weather lol. Only a recovery run today after running a half Marathon PB on Sunday. Thanks to the running channel for all your videos they certainly help get you motivated and give you good ideas for training runs they really help. 😁
Great video guys. Just had my winter running jacket delivered ... The 'Soar' All Weather Jacket 2.0 ... Expensive but worth it ... Lightweight, fitted, totally waterproof, breathable, warm (can wear it against your skin on its own). First run in the rain last night and looked and functioned great. Happy camper.
Thank you for all the information. I'm a new runner so I don't have all the fun clothes. It is difficult to know what to buy. I live in Ohio US so the rain, cold and the heavy snow is something to deal with. Any help from you is well appreciated. Take care
Hey Lesley - if you're new to running you'll probably want to invest in some thermal running gear to keep you warm in the winter. This is sweat wicking but insulated to keep your core warm on really cold days. For running jackets you could start lightweight and inexpensive to find out what you like when you're running. Then, once you've got more experience you can invest in a more expensive jacket once you know the features you really like. Hope this helps :-)
Can you guys do a video on how to dress for running in different seasons like fall and winter with an emphasis on different temperatures? It's pretty easy to know how to dress for the spring/Summer. But when it gets around 50 degrees and below I don't have a clue about what to wear.
I have an Under Armour Rain Jacket, I like it very good in the wind and rain, breathability whilst keeping the cold out too. But I a small problem with visibility when the hood is pulled up.
Excellent content as always. It would be cool if you do a review of some more affordable jackets. I get pretty gross after most of my runs. It's hard for me to wear a jacket again more than 1-2 times. I have a bunch of inexpensive jackets because of that.
I've always wondered why manufacturers don't add a few reflective patches to all their running kit. If it's raining then all road users would have reduced vision, and if you're on the moors then it may be life saving. And why on earth would you sell a black running jacket? Be safe out there!
I run the moors and wear a Salomon Bonatti WP jacket in black. It does have a couple of reflective strips on the shoulder. I do carry a First Aid kit, foil blanket and emergency whistle. I did come across a Walker who was injured earlier this year and helped her to get medical aid. It’s not normally for yourself but others you find out there
Thank you for the reviews, it’s enlightening to see there are so many jackets available. Ultimate Direction makes a lovely jacket that has built in mittens!- it’s called the Ultra Jacket V2.
I like the Proviz range, in 2 minds which one to buy...the classic running jacket seems good for breathability and waterproofing - but as a sweaty person 🥵 I wonder how good it will actually be.
Always wear a larger size to wear over you’re running vest or pack. Wearing a vest or pack can damage the waterproof material on the back of the jacket and then you may as well not wear one
I can’t run with the jacket on, it is to warm for me. I only put long sleeve on and one t- shirt on. That is enough but after run I have to put the jacket on immediately! It‘s super cold from the sweat!
I have the Salomon Bonatti WP jacket. I don't know its hydrostatic head value but I run in the early pre-dawn hours and it rarely rains, let alone pours, at that time. I have so far used it once when it looked like rain might strike during my run. OK, 'used' is a bit misleading, Iet's say, I had it packed in my little Salomon Agile 2 hydration vest ready to go should I need it. I expect it to last a long time :)
Great video guys but, if I'm looking for a jacket that will do everything, it would have to be the inov8, it's got to be waterproof if you're only having one surely?? Well, I've got one coming for Christmas (I do already have 2 inov8 jackets plus a Rab and Salomon though!)
Thunderstorms scare me from going outside. Can't get on with hoods on running jackets and use a hat with a jacket. Its 11 deg C here in South China and I run after not having eaten for 20 hours, consequently it feels cold.
Interesting. I have one too, and a kamleika ( which is rubbish in the rain / always has been , even after treating it. )But wondered if that plus the halo would be good enough out on the hills in winter . May look at a stormshell too ( was going for the montane minimus but had several reviews that it’s not very reliable🙈)
Is it really breathable compared to anything else you've tried? I've only seen the ON brand so far irl and I was thinking of picking it up.. but I want waterproofness but MOSTLY breathability
Any tips on rip-stop jackets? I'm forever getting snagged on branches as I run through the woods, so was looking for something that would survive a few bramble-strikes. Yes, I have already tried 'not running into stuff', but with limited success.
Just watched this. I live in Sweden and it can get really cold in here. I know that nobody would like to get hot while they run, but do you have any suggestions for warm jackets/tops? Thanks for your great videos!
Great range to choose from lads 👍 but..... what about us cheapskates 😂 for the laugh I think ye should get a selection of cheap ones from Wish and test them!! 😂😁
Thanks for watching! Check with your own jackets care instructions, but in general you want to use a specialist cleaner (for a gentle wash, not a detergent). Once it's washed and dried you can re-apply a waterproofing spray. Hope this helps :-)
A waterproof running jacket is pointless when actually doing cardio, water is already pouring off you from inside the jacket with nowhere to go. There really isn’t a truly breathable waterproof fabric. If so the first to make it would charge even more retarded prices
Ive just started using a inov8 trailshell, deffinalty an improvement over my last cheap one. Described as having a 20,000 hh and the same for breathablility, where as my last one i was soaking wet from sweat. This one only has one inside pocket Though on the chest so not much good for anything heavy. My only main grudge and has always been the same what ever waterproof jacket i use for running is water pooling in the elbow of the sleeves!!! You would think someone would address it and put some sort of holes around the elbow area to allow it drain out !!
