I went fishing for 5 days with my grandfather, cousin and father. This was supposed to be a great brookie spot, but it was also early august. The fish were slow and the grounds keeper told us there was nothing to catch. My grandfather has been fishing for 40 years and my 11 years old cousin for 7. They are both very good fishermen, but no one managed to catch a single fish for two days except for my cousin with a white sucker. That's until I started trolling with a gold spoon and got a small 6inch trout. I got an idea and started tossing all of my gold colored lures but none worked. That's until I took my gold and red moresilda and that got them going crazy. Really turned our terrible fishing trip into a decent one (it's not like we actually got that many but my cousin got one so i'm happy).

I found ur vid very interesting as i used to do spinning years ago. So when ur spinning do you constantly move and dip the rod when spinning for Sea trout ? Or do you just keep the rod still when winding the lure in ? Thanks for posting.

the straight lures (sandeel types)can be twitched at the end of a pause or just retrieved with a straight retrieve as reguards to the metals that are curved ive found a straight retrieve with a veried amount of spin stops (pending on water temp, more spin stops the colder it is and more heat less spin stops and more speed) seems to work best for me but its certainly worth using many types of retrieve during a session until you find which is best given on that day, i seem to find 7/8 turns of the handle then pause a second then start the retrieve again works best but seatrout are a locality and what works in one place might not work in another but always variety is the key i think, i hope this helped a little 👍

yes certainly john mate, all DEARA areas operate 1st march to 31st october, ALL seatrout and salmon now have to be returned by law and theres restrictions now on treble hooks just to make things even trickier!! hope that helps mate 👍

Great piece, fella! Fascinating what you say about the red thing, I've painted mepps blades red in peaty spate rivers to make them work better! and usually incorporate a red or purple element into my flies too, but that said its usually fresh water. Makes sense what you say about flaring gills on small baitfish, maybe just a thin red collar instead. Food for thought......
@whitetroutchannel
@whitetroutchannel 2 года назад
when it comes to the fresh mate they become a very different fish and id be inclined to agree with you on reds and brighter colours, light cones are almost the reverse effect in fresh and where blues and silvers fade quicker, reds yellows oranges stay plus when there in fresh they usually are in spawn mode so there hyper agressive many a fine afternoon ive had with the big size 5 mepps with red dots!! thanks for sharing mate and again many thanks for the watch 👍👍

Good to see your selecting. Just getting back into fishing after to long away. First small seatrout this summer on a small toby in amongst the sea weed. Like the delicate small lures. I do like some red on most lures however I find less is more, will try some plain silver. How to protect your lures and hooks from corrosion once you are finished, just rinse the hole lot in fresh water?
@whitetroutchannel
@whitetroutchannel 2 года назад
hey thanks for watching and subscribing 👍 the smaller lures always go well in the summer months ive had many a good fish on the small tobies and ive seen me fish nothing but silver metals all season too, theyll always a place in box, in reguards to rust when ive finished using them ill make sure there bone dry goin into the box again when im fishing and then as you said once im home just a run under warm water and a proper dry off and the usually keep me well, again thanks for watching mate always good to hear from other anglers and get their feed back 👍👍

@whitetroutchannel

@@riverfield713 thanks for the kind words, doesnt take much to remove the red even a small phillips flat head will lift most paint on the lures, just dont dig to deep most of the lures are only silver plate on brass you dont want to many scratches thou you dont need to be too forensic, hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍👍🎣

Another excellent and informative video. Great tips about colour and size of metal lures. I must find where you get thiose Hansen lures James. Have you any advice on braid. I have revertedback to monofilament as I spent half my time trying to unravel braid knots. Keep them coming James. Must get a cast with you this year.
@whitetroutchannel
@whitetroutchannel 2 года назад
hi tony, thanks for the view and comment, the hansen strippers can easily enough got on ebay, braids a tricky customer its took me a few seasons to get it right but i find the 2 major factors in knots is how its spooled on the reel and how you handle it when fishing, firstly when you spool up make sure it comes off the spool the direction your reeling and reel threw a cloth thats damp so your spooling it on with plenty of tension, when fishing with i find if you feather your line when casting it stops the line being able to belly then as start picking up to retrieve ill stickin my index finger out so the line hits off it until the line takes the weight of the lure again and the slacks off the line because i think thats were the major wind knots start with it, the tighter line you can keep on braid the less it knots, i hope ive explained that in a way that makes sense mate, again thanks for the kind words and supporting the channel 👍👍

if your boating it can be a little more difficult, they pick up on the vibrations big time i think but saying that its far from impossible, the slackwater between the river and the entrance to the bay at castle ward is always worth a throw off the boat in the summer! thanks for watching mate and kind words 👍👍

Fascinating 👍 I've sea fished for sea fish and fresh water for trout and salmon all my life but this year I decided to start fishing for sea trout in the sea, because I see so many jumping so I know they are there. It baffles me how I can of spun tobies and bass lures for decades and never touched one that I know of. Sooo long story longer someone recommended a solv piil, I saw a fish come out on it's tail and 4 casts and I had a 49cm totally silver sea wintered fish, I was absolutely amazed and now addicted to getting another. Now for the questions haha Are the sea winter fish easier to catch than the fellas you see jumping in summer? I mean did I get an easy target? I've since had 2 follows with a nip right at my feet, is my retrieve too slow, or do they just do that? Hooks, I've been reading about 7mm, gape trebles, size 8 ish, so was thinking of swapping to singles but i can't figure out if 7mm applies to singles too, if singles are better could you recommend some? Looking forward to more videos and going through your older ones, and probably many more questions, you clearly know what you're talking about. Cheers 👍 🎣

at this time of year if you can find the fish they can be easier to tempt than a well feed summer fish which can be almost the hardest fish to tempt in the united kingdom, ive generally found a slow steady retrieve this time of year is the most effective way to fish your lure but when it comes to summer fish its probably the other way round, reterieve in until you think its too fast, seatrout are hell for following lures and not taking, you can try using a fly dropper above your lure this can sometimes provoke them to strike more or try a spin/stop if you notice a follow, the latter method usually will make a following trout make a last ditch grab for your lure. fish that jump in the summer i think are trying to shed lice and sometimes have no incline to take a lure at all but i always bare in mind its takes energy to jump and to make energy you food, i recently changed most of my treble hooks now for vmc single inlines size 2 and 4 and they seem to cover my lures quite well, 2 things there make sure your hooks are like pins, the salt toughens there mouths and a blunt hook can just rub against a fishes mouth and never connect and if your hooks arent connected with 2 splits add a second it does make a difference, if youve found an area that you can see them in youve won half the battle esp at this time of year they tend to move around in shoals and could frequent an area one night and be a mile away the next, ive targeted seatrout for 25 years there are probably bigger experts than me all i can do is tell people what ive found, i hope this helps a little bit and it made sense and the bit of advice i tell everyone is just keep floggin away at it 👍👍
@dazlee3257
@dazlee3257 Год назад
@@whitetroutchannel brilliant advice, thanks for taking the time. I always use 2 splits, I'll get some vmc singles and I had a feeling the ones Ive had takes from might be easier and behave more like sea fish at this time of year. Basically I ve always seen them in the same areas as bass, mostly fast shallow water over or around rocks and weed, there isn't a river for miles so hopefully they are there to feed, we'll see what happens as the season goes on... Thanks again 😊👍

Another good vid, I find the hook up rate on the toby’s pretty poor even with the two split rings, any suggestions or am I doing something wrong, I fish mainly in estuaries and the sea, do you think smaller tobys work in these kind of conditions as well?
@whitetroutchannel
@whitetroutchannel 2 года назад
sadly mate greater fishermen than me have tried and failed to get a good hook up rate on a toby even hugh falkus described them as the best attractor and worst hooker of sea-trout he suggest using a stiff nylon hook link between lure and hook, make sure your trebles are needle sharp too when fishing the salt makes there mouths tough and a lot of the time the hook hasnt went threw into them, mate i only use toby's really in the salt and estuary, i know a lot of guys use them in freshwater too but i prefer a spinning blade then, but id guess the toby has caught me the most fish over the years and lost me the most lol cheers for the view and comment mate 👍👍

Loving these new videos found your channel before but these made me sub. What rod and line do you reccommend for Sea trout? Are soft plastics any use?
@whitetroutchannel
@whitetroutchannel 2 года назад
a good 8ft spinning rod (10-30g) helps get the longer casts when needed, i use 15lb braid to help get lures from the weed or 2 bully fish away from patches of kelp, personally ive not used them but ive seen fish caught with the Fiissh black minnow and i know berkley gulp worms (ragworm) are used in scandanavia to catch them, but they are worth a shout mate, some areas different lures work better than others, half the fun is going out and trying yourself! thanks for leaving a comment and the view mate 👍👍
