BEST SKIN CARE PRODUCTS - Retinol
Vitamin A, retinol, retinoic acid and retinoids have proven anti-ageing properties since the 1990s. Originally developed to treat acne, retinoids lead to both reduced acne counts and an improvement in skin texture- reducing unwanted pigmentation, shrinking pores, reducing blackheads, and acts as a powerful anti-aging cream. Anti-aging properties are due to thickening of both the epidermis and dermis. It decreases solar elastosis or sun damage, and increases the production of elasin, and most importantly collagen.
In most countries, retinol can be bought without prescription, however retinoic acid or tretinoin requires a doctor’s script. Retinol is readily absorbed through the skin and up to 10% of this acid is converted into active retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is the active ingredient of retinol.
First generation retinoids include tretinoin, second generation retinoids include adapelene, and third generation retinoids include tazorac or tazarotene. Retinoids work by modulation of DNA via RAR receptors- this in turn produces collagen and increases turnover of skin cells, producing a healthier epidermis and increasing blood vessels and collagen.
The biggest skin care tip I can give you if you are contemplating on starting retinoids is to start slow, and work up. Moisturise 30 minutes before application, avoid the folds around the nose, and your eye lids. Dilute the retinoid in a moisturiser such as Obaji Hydrate or Cetaphil- especially if you have sensitive skin. Retinoids should be incorporated in everyone’s skin care routine for healthy skin, as this improves skin dullness, fine wrinkles and pigmentation. Retinoids also work as a powerful anti-ageing prevention cream.
For more information on where to purchase retinoids, consult a dermatologist, skin care physician or visit My Skin Pharmacy. They can guide you as to your starting concentration depending on your skin sensitivity and examination. A choice of retinol products can be purchased online from companies like Neostrata, Obaji and many others. See below for vitamin A products.

As a disclosure I have no affiliation nor endorsement from any skin care company. Product reviews and skin care basics like this video is common knowledge by every single Board Certified Dermatologists and skin care pharmacist and in my videos are always independent and never sponsored.
It is common practice I place all my laser resurfacing patients on retinoids 1-2 months after their procedure as a life-long, effective, yet cost-effective program.
I use a very high strength retinoid peel for some patients - up to 1% tretinoin. This has to be supervised as skin peeling will occur. My personal regime is to use a super strength 2% tretinoin peel monthly- the lazy ass dermatologist peel. Thanks for watching this channel. More on skin care tips, procedures and products next week. Cheers,

Lasers and Lifts by Dr Davin Lim ,Hi Dr, what about medical facial lightening cream, how it works? Because it made addicted to skin, I got difficulty to stop using, coz once stop, skin gets small pimple and rough. What about Pitera, would you please explain further maybe it is actually easy to get in cheap product, because summary of all, I see that we pay marketing for branded product.

Rita Sharqawi Hi Rita. I have dry skin and have been using Differin strictly for anti-aging for almost 2 years. My skin is balanced now, but I’ve never suffered from acne or problematic skin and I haven’t had side-effects from using Differin...just some mild peeling at the beginning. I still use it every other night. Think back and check if there’s any other new product(s) you started around the same time as the Differin. Maybe you started purging? I just Googled Differin + purge and the articles said that there’s a “Differin Purge” which can take up to 8 weeks. It says Differin is bringing problematic things already in the skin out, and once the purge is over your skin will start improving significantly. Did you have any type of breakouts or acne before you started using it? It may be that you’re purging...which I’m sure is terrible to go through. You can or should check with a Dermatologist. But again...you may just be purging. If you’ve never had acne issues or problems before, and are using it for anti-aging like I am you shouldn’t purge. I didn’t. Let me know if you had acne or problematic skin before using Differin. If your skin was fine you shouldn’t be purging...per my experience. But I do recommend seeing a Dermatologist! I’m not busy now so feel free to get back to me! 😊

Hi Dr Davin,i happened to stumble upon your video and i am glad i did!! Lately, last two months i have woken up to a skincare routine after having spent time and money on expensive high end products which have not helped with my dull dry matured skin with fine lines.I got my PRP treatment done and sebsequently followed with incorporating Vit A ,Vit C and glycolic acid on my skincare regime after.So the interest has grown tremendously and i soak in as much information to help deal with my skin.But you stand out cause you are honest,clear our doubts brilliantly, and explain the facts to the point.I am also glad you are not into marketing any products or even endorsing brands. I am now using Niod and The Ordinary which i love and has helped me.i am 54yrs..Brandon made products affordable and with no marketing hypes,and clear cut information,he transformed the way we look at skincare today.. Can you please educate us on a skin regime for matured dry fine lines ..the frequency and the sequence of products to layer from cleansing,toning(if necesssary) peptides,antioxidanta,vit c,glycolic acid,HA,ceremides etc.. The information is confusing.. Everyone says to apply products from the thinest to the thickest..but they dont say if HA goes in first ,or alpha arbutin or vitC etc Can you pls post a video for this type of skincare How often can we use peels or if we shouldn't ,if using prescription Retin A,how often and when to use Vit C..since all are drying Thank you so much I have talked to all my friends about watching your videos. Keep educating us pls

@@starlaks588 Oh it's okay I researched it myself I have a masters in science. The all trans retinoic acid content of cold pressed rosehip seed oil is 0.03% which makes it comparable to a 0.2% retinol serum as retinol needs to undergo an enzymatic process in the skin where it loses 80-90% potency to become all trans retinoic acid before the skin can use it as Dr Lim mentioned :D

I always look forward to your videos. I believe that everyone reacts differently on certain skin treatments and must likewise recognize how our skin reacts before we do certain skin regimen or treatment. I am 42y and never even underwent acne or pimple problems on my teens until these past few months. I believe age and stress played huge part. Been to a skin care clinic on my holiday in the Philippines. I was advised to attend a weekly facial treatment however despite my tolerance to painful sebum extraction I noticed my pores and face could not handle instead had it twice only and settled for the topicals they prescribed. I watched few of your videos for the DIYs and I am not advising everyone to do so but since I have a medical background being a nurse, I agree Vit A and sun block of atleast spf50 really helps and it did help my struggle. Now I am in the process of aeeing results from my decision and definitely will consider having a regular skin care routine before another seties of acne pops out! THANK YOU FOR A VERY WELL EXPLAINED RATIONALE AND CORRELATION OF THEORY AND PRACTICAL. HAVE A VERY SKIN CLEAR MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Are retinol creams and retin A both from synthetic vit A? I read a comment saying synthetic vit A is not good for the liver? But Im thinking that if its just topical and a small pea size daily it wont really matter?

I must tell that you are incorrect about the cost of prescription retinoids versus OTC retinols. In the US you must have a prescription for Retin A so that requires a specialist visit which can be quite expensive if you do not have insurance and even then the co-insurance payment can be quite high. And most insurance in the US will not cover Retin A if you are over 35 so a tube can cost over $100.00 US. If your insurance will cover Retin A then you are correct about how inexpensive it is but people under 35 are not as much in need of retinoids. Also, many Dermatologist say that Differin does not have the same anti-aging effects of Retin A because it acts on a different set of receptors and does not act as deeply into the skin.

Palladio 1500 you are SO incorrect in much of this reply. You're actually telling a certified doctor he's wrong? Wow! In AUSTRALIA we don't need insurance to get Retin A. We can get a free prescription from the GP.
@AussieChick48
@AussieChick48 6 лет назад
Palladio 1500 and seriously, people under 35 don't need it? If you're smart, you start using Retin A in your 20s! Prevention is the key here.

Calm down! My comment referred to the US! That is wonderful that you dont need a prescription in Australia. I wish we didnt need a prescription in the US! We can buy Differein OTC but not tretinoin or tazerotene. Canada requires a prescription and I believe the UK does as well. Women in the US who cant afford a specialist and/or prescription drugs because they dont have insurance to cover the cost are buying retinoids from overseas markets. Our lawmakers are in the pockets of the drug companies. My comment, as I stated, was in regard to the US. I know many people in the US who watch Dr Lim because he is such a good source. I started tazerotene in my late 20's for acne and then moved to Retin A. Many women do not even consider using a retinoid for anti-aging until they are well beyond their thirties. That is why US insurance wont pay for it because they consider that anyone over 35 is using it for aesthetic purposes and not for acne.

Thank god you cleared up that myth about retin-a thinning the skin. I'm so tired of armchair experts parroting misinformation on the beauty forums. Too bad tretinoin is not covered by insurance for adults and costs like $400 for a 45g tube. US drug prices are insane.

Yes, it is 8 time more expensive in the US, but the flip side is that BOTOX and JUVEDERM cost prices are cheaper there. Davin Lim

Dr. Lim, is it true that you can never get the same level of anti aging benefits from retinol, even at high concentrations and long periods of time, that you can get using retinoic acid? After a point do you just plateau out with the benefits from retinoland its just maintainance from there? Thank you for making these great videos for us!

Hi, I was wondering what you think about Retin-A micro. Supposedly it is gentler and more time-released, than the regular Rentin-A. Do feel it might be less effective because of it's Micro-spears, or its still a valid choice? Thanks in advance.

Hi! First of all, I’m new here and I’m already in love with your channel!!! You are fabulous!!! I have rosacea and I use a tretinoin cream (0,025%) every night and it has improved my condition like you wouldn’t imagine! I’m not sure why tretinoin is contraindicated for rosacea. In my personal experience, that’s the only thing that works! Anyway, I also use a PHA/AHA exfoliating serum and I wanted to know if It’s possible to combine both? I’ve done that a couple of times but I’m not sure if it is a good idea. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!!! ❤️ Greetings from Argentina (south America).

I so glad that I found your videos. I am 52 and don't really have wrinkles but my skin is getting loose. Will my Tretinoin cream firm my skin at all. When I use it I don't really notice anything so I stop using it. I used it once a week for a month. should I use it every night? It's 0.025%. The brand is Spear, I don't know what generation it is. Thank you for your expertise ♥

Hi Dr Lim. I've been using Stieva a for 2 years, 0.5. I can't get a higher strength in Australia unfortunately which is so frustrating as I feel I should be on a 0.1 strength now. Do you recommend I ask my GP for a script for the product you mentioned, Zorac and is it a stronger tretinoin then 0.5? I absolutely love your You Tubes Dr Lim.

Hi from the Sunny Coast. I recently started using a retinol(0.5% in squareness from The Ordinary) for the 1st time. I was advised not to use it near the eye area, however that's where I have the most wrinkles/ smile lines (I'm 48) . What do you think? Thanks, Ange

I have been using prescription retinoic acid for almost 6 months now. I started slowly, slowly as directed by my dermatologist. I was fully expecting the whole red peeling face.........but nothing, so I sped things up to every night and then to a higher strength again every night and now I'm on a compounded 0.1% every night. I slather it on, my skin looks great and I have never once had any irritation. Am I just lucky???
@drdavinlim
@drdavinlim 6 лет назад
You are indeed but you got guidance from YOUR excellent dermatologist to start slow as directed, then your dermatologist increased the dose. See... if every dermatologist was like your dermatologist, then most people will have a great anti-ageing program, so all credit to your dermatologist for guidance. I wish all my colleagues tell their PA or make a video on retinoid use... that would help everyone, and save people money as medical retinoic acid is cheaper than retinol . Good work Victoria. Hi Laura, when I started on .025% the brand was Re Trieve, at .05% the brand name was Tretinoin. I''m on .1% now and it is compounded by my pharmacist. I don't recall all the prices but around $50. I''m in Australia so these particular prescription products are a lot cheaper than say the USA were they can be well over $200.
